THINGS TO REMEMBER!
Scleralcontactlensesarerecognisedasasafeform ofvisioncorrection.However, incorrectcareof
scleral contact lenses and solutions can increase the risk of eye infections and corneal ulcers. Risk
factors for acquiring an eye infection include improper lens cleaning and disinfection, poor hygiene
practices and smoking. Following your practitioner’s hygiene regime, along with regular reviews, will
minimisethisrisk.

Beforehandling,removingorinsertingyourlenses:
Alwaysthoroughlywashyourhandswithanantibacterialbasedhandwashanddrythemwithaclean
towelbefore handling, removing or inserting your lens. Make sure towashallparts of your hands
includingbetweenthengersanddrythoroughly.
• Sitatatableordeskandplacealint-freeclothdowntoinsertandremovelenses.Avoidbathrooms
astheyoftencontainmoregermsthananyotherroominthehome.
• Inspectyourlensesfordepositsanddefectssuchaschips
orcracks.If younoticeany defectsor ifyou areunsure
whetheryourlensesaredamageddonotwearthelenses
andaskyourEyeCarePractitionertoinspectthemrst.
• Ifyoumisplacealens,contactyourEyeCarePractitioner
forareplacement.

Removal - Remove lens either manually or with the suction cup
First,ensureyoubreakthesealofyoursclerallens.Dothisbypressingrmlywithyourngeronyour
bottomeyelidjustbelowtheloweredgeofthelens,thenpushupwards.

METHOD 1 – SUCTION TOOL
• Whilelookinginthemirrorinfrontofyou,holdopenyourbottomlid.Wetthetipofthesuctiontool
toallowforbetteradhesionandattachthesuctiontiptothebottomthirdofthelens.
• Usingthesuctiontool,removethelensbytiltingthelensupandoutoftheeye.

DAILY TWO-STEP CLEANER
Asdirectedbyyoureyecarepractitioner,somepatientsrequireadailytwo-steplenscleaningsystem.
Holdthelensinthepalmofyourhandandinstilonedropofthedailylenscleanerintothebowlofthe
lens.Gentlyrubthelensuntiltheliquidfoamslikesoap.Thenrinseoffwithsalineandplacethelens
intotheconditioningsolutiontostoreovernight.
PEROXIDE CLEANING SYSTEMS
Placelenses inthesupplied basketholder andllthe casewiththe hydrogenperoxidesolution. If
requiredaddtheneutralisingtablet,replacethelidandtighten.Unlessotherwiseindicated,thelenses
shouldtintothebasketcasewiththebasketsclosingoverthelenses.Improperuseofthebasket
case may cause damage to scleral lenses. It is imperative the lenses are not removed before the
solutionhashadsixhourstoneutralise.

METHOD 2 – MANUAL REMOVAL
• Insertadropofpreservative-freesalineorarticialtearstoloosenthelens.
• Tobegin,lookdownontoaatsurface(amirroroftowelcanbeplacedhere).
• Usingyourmiddlengers,opentheeyelidswiderthanthelensdiameter.
• Applypressuretothemiddleofthelidmargins(asclosetothelashesasyou
can–youdonotwanttoshowanyoftheredinsidesurfaceofyourlids),pushinginandtogetherto
moveyourlidsunderthelensandleveritoutoftheeye.
INTENSIVE CLEANER
Tocleanandmaintainthewettabilityofyourlensesuseintensivecleaner.Place
thelensesinto thecontactlenscase holders. Open vial AandBby twisting
thecapandpourthecontentsintothecontactlenscase.Replacethelidand
tighten.Leavethelensesinthesolutionfor30minutes,thenremoveandrinse
thoroughlywithsaline.Lensescannowbewornorsoakedinyourdailycleaner.(pleasenotethatthis
productmaynotbeavailableinallcountries,askyourpractitioner).

4INSERTION OF SCLERAL LENSES
Scleral lenses are manufactured from a durable
gas permeable polymer which resists wear and
tear during normal lens wearing circumstances.
However,itisstillimportanttohandlethemcarefully.
Habitsthatmaycausealenstobreakinclude;
• Pressureonthelens.Ifthelenslandsonamirrororatsurface,gently
slideitofftotheedgeofthesurfaceoruseasuctiontooltoremoveit
fromthesurface.
• Pulling a lens too rmly from the suction tool. Slide the lens off the
suctionpointinstead.
• Forcingthelenstobendwhilecleaning.Someforceisrequiredtocleanarigidlensusingyour
cleaningsolution,butnottoomuch.Thefrictionofyourskinsurfacewilldomostofthejob.If
youarepressingdownonbothsidesofthelens,itwillexandeventuallysnapiftoomuchforce
isapplied.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
The rst thing you will notice about your lenses
is they have different colours. Usually, the right
lensisclearandtheleftlenshasabluetint.The
different colours will ensure you don’t get the
lenses confused. The way to remember is the
secondletterofblueisLforleft!

Ifoninsertionyouexperiencestinging,burningorslightpain,removethelens,rinseandre-insert.If
theproblempersists,removethelensandseeyouroptometristatyourearliestconvenience.

Normal occurrences on insertion:
Duringtherstfewweeksofwear,itisnotunusualtohavelensfoggingduetoanaccumulationoflipid
andmucusbehindthelens.Thelensfoggingwillimproveovertime.Ifalensbecomesfoggyduring
theday,removethesclerallens,rinseandre-insertbackintotheeye.Mixpreservativefreelubricating
eyedropswiththesalineinsertionsolutiontohelpreducepersistentfogging.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
Eitherplacethescleralcontactlensbetweenthemiddle,forengerandthumb(knownas
thetripodmethod)orsecureyourlenstoasuctiontool.
STEP 2:
Halfllthebowlofthelenswithapreservative-freesalinesolutiontopreventairbubbles
betweenyoureyeandthelens.Insertthesclerallensdirectlyontothecentreofyoureyein
afacedownposition.Tosaveconfusion,it’sagoodideatoalwaysinserttherightlensrst.
STEP 3:
Removeyoursclerallensesfromthecleaningsolutioncaseandrinsewithsaline.Ifyouare
usingahydrogenperoxidesolution,aminimumsoakingtimeofsixhoursisrequiredforthe
solutiontoneutralise
STEP 1:
Insertion:
Ifyouhappentodropyoursclerallens,usesalinesolutiontorinse.Placethelensinthe
palmofyourhandandthoroughlyrinseforvesecondsandreinsertthelens.
STEP 4:
Dryandwipeoutyourlenscasewithatissue.Leavethecaselidofftoairdrywhilewearing
yourlenses.

• Makesureyouattendallyourfollow-upappointments–thesewillallowyoureyecarepractitioner
toensureyournewsclerallensisperformingaswellaspossible.
• Initially,itisbesttoincreaseyourwearingtimegradually.Startwithfourhoursontherstdayand
thenaddtwohourseachdayafterthat.
• Donotmodifytherecommendedcleaningroutineorsolutionswithoutconsultingyourpractitioner.
Othersolutions maynot becompatible withyoureyesand lensesand maycause discomfortor
allergicreactions.
• Shortcuts with cleaning solutions
appear to save money but may
ineffectivelycleananddisinfectthe
lens. Incorrect cleaning solutions
candamageyourlensesorleadto
aneyeinfectionwhichcanresultin
losingvision.
• Nevercleanorstoreyourrigidlens
with soft contact lens solutions.
Theseproductsworkinadifferentwaytotherigidlenssolutionsandwillnotcleanandcondition
yourrigidlensesaswell.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
Normal occurrences include:
• Foreignbodysensationwhilewearinglenses.
• Mucusand lipidbuild upunder thesclerallenscausingend
ofdayfogging.
DURING THE FIRST 2 WEEKS:
Abnormal symptoms (contact your Eye Care Provider immediately) include:
• Redness, discharge, pain, light sensitivity, burning, stinging, and excessive watering of the eyes
whichdonotresolveafterlensesareremoved.
• Feelinglikethelensisstuckontheeyeandhavingdifcultywithremoval.

• Replace your lens case every
timeyou starta new bottleof
lenscleanertoavoidmicrobial
contamination and loss of
effectivity.
• To avoid contamination do
not touch the tips of solution
bottles.Replacecapsafteruse.
• If your eyes are very painful
after hours, consult your local
hospitaloremergencyeyeclinic.
• Ifyounoticescratches,chipsormisplacealens,contactyourEye Care Providerforareplacement.
• Rememberyoureyemust:
◦Lookgood(noredeyes)
◦Feelgood(nopain,discomfortorlightsensitivity)
◦Seegood(nopersistentblurryvision)
◦If in doubt, take them out and call your optometrist
