For best performance, we recommend that you install your printer on a at surface in a
location that satises the following environmental conditions:
• Notsubjecttovibration
• Notexposedtodirectsunlight
• Dust-free
• Condensation-free
• Temperatures:59to95°F(15to35°C)

Installing the SLP 440 or 450
Here,you’llfindouthowtounpackandsetupyournewSLP.Aspartofthesetupprocess,
you’llloadarollofstandardaddresslabelsandrunaquicktest.
Unpacking the SLP
Carefullyremovetheprinteranditscomponentsfromthebox.It’sagoodideatosavethe
boxandpackingmaterialsincaseyouneedtostoreorshiptheprinter.Makesureyou
have all of the following items.

•SmartLabelsoftwarewithUserGuide
•USBcable

Installing the Smart Label Program for MacOS X
1 InserttheSmartLabelCD.Iftheinstallerdoesnotappearautomatically,double-click
theCDonyourdesktoporinthelepaneofanewFinderwindow.
2 Double-clicktheleSIISmartLabelPrinter.mpkg. The installer will appear. Follow the
on-screeninstructions.
3 ForMacOSX10.2:Aerinstallationiscomplete,openPrint CenterandselectyourSLP
printer.MacOSX10.3or10.4willautomaticallysetupyourprinter.
Installing the Smart label Program for Windows
1 InserttheSmartLabelCD.Theinstallationwizardstartsautomaticallyonmostsystems.
If the introductory screen doesn’t appear after a few seconds, do the following:
2 ClicktheWindowsStart button then point to Settings and choose Control Panel.
3 Double-clickAdd/Remove ProgramsthenclicktheInstall button. Follow the install
wizardtoassistwithinstallation.
Please note:Ifyourprinterisnotrecognizedoralllabeltemplatesdonotappear,
youwillneedtoset-upyourprinterwithintheSLPprintersoftware.Pleasesee

Connecting the SLP to a Power Outlet
1ConnectthesuppliedACadaptertothebackoftheSLPandtoapoweroutlet.
2The printer powers on automatically when connected
toACpower.Thestatuslightwillashifnolabels

Setting up the Printer
Iftheprinterisnotrecogonizedusingtheinstallationwizard,youwillneedtosetupyour
printer manually. To do so, follow these steps:
Prepare the roll of labels
1 OpentheSmartLabelprintersoftware
2 UndertheLabelpull-downmenu,selectPrinter Set-up
3 SelectAdd a printer
4 SelecthowyourprinterisconnectedandclickDone.
Loading a Roll of Labels
Prepare the roll of labels
1 Removethestickerfromthebeginningoftherolloflabels.
Note: Makesurethereisablacksensormarkonthelabelbackingasshownonpage3.
2If needed, cut between the labels to create a “leader.”
If the end of the roll is not prepared as shown above, cut between the labels leaving as
muchbackingaspossibleontheendoftherolltoactasaleader.
Load the roll of labels
1 Makesurethepowercordisconnectedand
the printer is turned on. The green status light
should be flashing.
2 Liftthebaseofthelabel
cover and rotate it open
as shown at right.
Connecting the SLP to your computer
UsetheUSBcableprovidedwiththeSLP440or450toconnecttheSLPtoyourcomputer.
CAUTION: Connecting or disconnecting the interface cable
while the printer is turned on may damage the printer.
Follow these steps:
1 MakesurethattheSLPisturnedoff.Ifthestatuslightison,holdthepowerbutton
until it turns off.
2 ConnecttheprintertoyourPCorMac.
• InserttheUSBcableintotheUSBportonyourPCorMac.
• IfallUSBportsareinuse,youmayneedtopurchaseaUSBhub.
• ConnecttheotherendofthecableintotheappropriateportonthebackoftheSLP.

3 RemovethespindlefromtheSLPandinsertthelabelrollonthespindle.
4 InsertthelabelsandspindleintotheSLP.Ifnecessary,adjusttheguidestofitthe
labels as shown below.
5 Insertthefreeendofthelabelroll,labelsidedown,intotheslotonthebackofthe
printer.Pushthelabelstockintotheslotuntilyoufeelaslightresistance.Continue
pushinggently.TheSLPautomaticallyfeedsthelabelsthroughandalignstheend
intheexitslot.
If the label end doesn’t appear through the slot:
Press and release the form feed button to advance the labels.
6Close the label cover.
Testing the Printer
Aquicktestletsyouknowyourprinterisoperatingproperlyandthatthelabels
are loaded correctly.

1Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn the printer off.
2Press and hold the form feed button and then press the power button. The green
statuslightwillbegintoash.Donotreleasetheformfeedbutton.
3To print the SIIgraphiclogo:
•Whileholdingthe button, press the powerbutton1xandreleasebothbuttons.
4ToprinttheSIIsampleaddresslabel:
•Whileholdingthe button, press the powerbutton2xandreleasebothbuttons.
5To print the density test:

Changing Labels and Printer Care
Overview
TheSLP440and450usesadvancedthermalprinttechnologytoprovidecrisp,
high-contrastprinting.Therearenoribbonsorcartridgestoreplace.
ForbestresultswerecommendtheuseofSeikoInstrumentsSmartLabels.Otherbrandsmay
notbeengineeredtoprovideoptimum,trouble-freeresultswithyourSmartLabelPrinter;
theymaynotworkwithyourSLPortheymaydamageitandvoidyourwarranty.
Caring for Your Printer
YourSLP440and450isahigh-precisiondevicethat’sdesignedfortrouble-freeoperation.
Justfollowthesefewprecautions:
• Note:TheSLP440 and 450isdesignedforuseonlywithSeikoInstrumentsSmartLabels.
Useofimproperlabelsmaydamagetheprinterandvoidyourwarranty.
• Don’toperatetheprinterinadustyenvironment.
• Keeptheprinteroutofdirectsunlight.
• Ifyouareprintingmorethanonelabelatatime,guidethelabelsoverthefrontofthe
labelcoverastheyexit,makingsurethattheydon’tcurlunderoroverthecoverand
loop through and into the feed slot.
• Turnofftheprinterwhennotinuse.
• Pulloutthepowerplugwhentheprinterisnotinuseforalongtime.
Discarding Old Printers
WhendiscardingoldandusedSmartLabelPrinters,pleasefollowthedisposalorrecycling
regulations in your area.
O Line and On Line Mode
Pressing and releasing the power button toggles the printer between off line and
onlinemode.Anamberstatuslightindicatesthattheprinterisoffline.Thereisno
communication with the computer when the printer is off line.
This feature is a handy way to stop printing so you don’t waste labels while you delete
labels from the print queue.
Changing a Label Roll
This procedure describes how to remove and replace label rolls.
• Youcanloadadifferenttypeoflabelatanytime—youdon’thavetowaituntilallof
the labels have been used.
• Whenyourunoutoflabels,thegreenstatuslightonthefrontoftheSLPflashes.Ifprinting
is in process, a message appears telling you that the printer is out of labels.
Removing the Old Roll
CAUTION:DONOTpullonthelabelstoremovethemfromthe
printer.Thismaycauselabelstogetstuckinsidetheprinter.
1Tear off any printed labels. If labels aren’t torn off, they may get jammed when you
perform step 2.
2 Pressandholdtheformfeedbutton.ThelabelswillreverseoutoftheSLP.Ifthis
doesnotwork,see"AdjustingyourLabelPosition"onPage12toreleasetheplaten
to remove the labels.

Adjusting the Position of Labels
If you find the labels are advancing at an angle, follow these steps to realign them:
1 Swivelthelabelcoveropenandremovetheprintenginecoverbypullingforwardonthe
edges at the top of the cover.
2 Releasethepressureonthelabelstockbymovingtheplatenreleaseleverforward.
3 Realignthelabelstocksoitisstraight.
4 Returntheplatenreleaselevertothelockedposition.
5 Makesurethelabelsfeedthroughtheslot.
6 Replacetheprintenginecover,startingatthebottom,andpushthetopedgeforward
until the cover snaps into place.
Removing Stuck Labels
Ifalabelbecomesstuckinyourprinter,removeitasfollows:
1 Withapairofscissors,cutthelabelstockbetweenthelabelrollandthelabelslotatthe
backoftheprinter.
2 Swivelthelabelcoveropenandremovetheprintenginecoverbypullingforwardonthe
edges at the top of the cover.
3 Releasethepressureonthelabelstockbymovingtheplatenreleaseleverforward.
4 Removethestucklabel.
5 Ifthelabel–orpiecesofthelabel–sticktotheplaten,usetheSeikoDual-Action
Cleaning Pen to dissolve the adhesive on the label and remove residue left on the printer.
CAUTION:DONOTtouchtheprintengine.Itmaybehot.
6Once you have removed any remaining pieces of label, return the platen release lever
tothelockedposition.
7 Replacetheprintenginecover,startingatthebottom,andpushthetopedgeforward
until the cover snaps into place.

YoumayalsopurchasetheSeikoDual-ActionCleaningPen(SLP-CLNPEN)tohelpkeepthe
printer clean and operating at it’s optimum.
1 Removelabelstockfromprinter.
2 Removethefrontfaceplate.
3 UsetheSeikoDual-ActionCleaningPentocleantheprinthead,roller,andfeedrampto
remove any debris or adhesive that may have built up on your printer.
4To clean your pen tip, wipe the tip across a clean paper surface.
**PleaseusetheAlcoholendofthePenontheareawheretheAdhesiveRemoverend
was used.
Cleaning the Printer
1 Removelabelstockfromprinter.
2 InserttheSeikoSmartLabelPrinterCleaningCard(SLP-CLNCRD).
3The Card should feed automatically or you can press the “Form Feed” button to
manuallyfeedthecard(youmayalsogentlypullthecardtoguideitthroughtheroller).
4 Repeatprocessifnecessary.
5Properly dispose of the used card.

QWill my labels fade over time?
A Labelsaremadeofthermalpaper.Heatappliedtothepapercausesachemical
reactiontogenerateblackdotsatthepointswhereheatwasapplied.Thistechnique
avoidsusingmessyinksandribbons.Becausethepaperisheat-sensitive,itispossible
foralabeltodarkenifexposedtohighheatorverybrightlightforanextendedperiod
oftime.Itisalsopossibleforcertainplasticizersinsomeplasticbinderstocausea
