The Sim rad SG05 is a gat eway for interfacing the AP24
and AP28 aut opilot syst em s to Volvo Penta Electronic
Vessel Control ( EVC). I t contains t he st eering com puter
and provides int erface t o ot her system com ponents.
I t com m unicat es on t he pr oprietary Sim Net data and
control net work t o est ablish a reliable digital
com m unicat ion and power distribut ion between t he unit s
in the autopilot system as well as other Sim rad products.
Sim Net provides high speed data transfer and control of
Sim rad products integrat ed in a tot al steering and
navigation syst em .
1 .2 H ow t o use t h is m a nu al
This m anual is int ended as a reference guide for inst alling
and m aintaining the Sim rad SG05 Gateway and other
com ponent s in an aut opilot system .
Please t ake t im e to read t his m anual to get a t horough
understanding of t he sy st em com ponent s and t heir
relat ionship to a com plet e aut opilot system .
Ot her docum ent ation m aterial t hat is pr ovided w ith y our

2 I n st alla t ion
An aut opilot system includes several units t hat need t o
be m ount ed in different locat ions on t he boat, and also
need t o connect wit h at least three different system s on
the boat :
•EVC Aut opilot I nt er face
•The boat s elect r ical sy st em ( 12V Sim Net pow er)
•Ot her equ ipm ent on boar d ( Sim Net / NMEA in t er facin g)
I n addit ion, the advanced capabilit ies of t he syst em
require the installer t o perform a series of set t ings and
tests to verify proper operation of the system , refer to
the check list below.
2 .1 I n st a lla t ion ch eck list
1. Det erm ine the system configurat ion you are
inst alling ( Page 8)
2. Perform t he hardware in st allation ( Page 10)
3. Connect Sim Net devices t o Sim Net ( page 15)
4. Perform Set - up (refer t o Operator m anual)
5. Test Autopilot Operation at Sea ( refer t o Sea Trial
instructions in t he Operator m anual)
2 .2 Unpack ing and ha ndling
Care should be taken w hen unpacking and handling t he
equipm ent . A visual inspection should be m ade to see
that the equipm ent has not been dam aged during
shipm ent and that all com ponent s and part s are present
according t o t he packing list.

8 | Operation
An aut opilot system will include:
•Cont rol unit (AP24 or AP28) wit h accessories
•SG05 Gateway wit h accessories
•Com pass ( RC4 2) w it h 5,5 m ( 1 8') Sim Net cable
att ached
•Opt ional equipm ent t hat m ay have been ordered for
the inst allat ion.
2 .3 D et e rm in e sy st em con figu ra t ion
I t is im portant to become fam iliar wit h t he configurat ion
of t he system prior to beginning t he inst allation. An
aut opilot basic single station system wit h opt ional station
is shown in Figur e 2- 1
Plan y our cabling and configure t he Sim Net network in
accordance w it h chapt er 2.9 on page 15.
As m ost of t he unit s are com m unicat ing on a com m on
net w ork ( Sim Net ) w it h ident ical connectors, t he
installat ion is sim ple. Try t o m ount the unit s wit hin t he
st andard cable lengt h supplied with each unit. Sim Net
cables are available from your dist ribut or ( see page 20)
for connection t o ot her Sim Net devices and cable

The heading sensor is the
m ost im port ant part of the aut opilot system and great
care should be taken w hen deciding t he m ount ing
location. As the heading is displayed on t he control unit ,
t he heading sensor can be m ount ed at a rem ote location.
The com pass can be m ount ed on deck or bulkhead,
athwart ship or along ship. Som e of t he products
connected t o t he Sim Net network m ay have a heading
offset feature. This will com pensat e for the m echanical
offset s t hat m ay be a r esult of t he select ed locat ion and
orient at ion of the com pass.

14 | Operation
I f the connect ed products have no offset feat ure, t he
com pass m ust be deck or bulkhead m ount ed athwart ship
w it h t he cable gland point ing back.
Select a location t hat provides a solid mount ing place free
from vibrat ion, and as close t o t he vessel's centr e of roll
and pit ch as possible, i.e. close to the wat er line. I t
should be as far as possible from disturbing m agnetic
interference e.g. engines ( m in. 2 m et er s) , engine ignit ion
cables, ot her lar ge m et al obj ect s and par ticularly t he
autopilot drive unit. On st eel hull boats it should be
m ou nt ed 0 ,7 5- 1 m abov e t he w heel h ou se on a non
m agnetic st and.
The com pass face plate is the TOP. Never m ount it upside
dow n! Level t he sen sor as close t o h or izont al as possible.
Use the supplied m ount ing kit and drill holes t hrough t he
centre of the slots.
Connect the com pass t o an available Sim Net connector in
t he Sim Net “ back bone” .
2 .8 I n t e rf acin g
With t he autopilot system there are several possibilit ies
to connect to ot her equipm ent for data collection and
exchange:
1 Use Sim Net
2 Use Sim Net via AT10 Universal Sim Net / NMEA
Converter
3 Connect to a NMEA2000 network via adapt er
( dr op) cable, part no. 24 0057 29 .
The different connecting diagr am s on t he follow ing pages
illustrat e the interface possibilit ies of t he aut opilot s.

2 .9 Sim N e t
The Sim Net cable system wit h very sm all plugs in bot h
ends m ak es it easy t o r un t he cables, only 10 m m ( 3/ 8” )
holes are required through panels and bulkheads. The
Sim Net accessory program cont ains t he necessar y it em s
t o m ake a successful installation. Refer t o Sim N e t
cables a nd a ccessor ies, page 20.
Sim N e t n et w or k ca ble s
A Sim Net unit has one or two yellow Sim Net connect ors.
There are no dedicated “ in” or “ out ” connect or s. Rou te
t he Sim Net cables w it h Figure 2 - 11 or Figure 2 - 12 as a
guideline. Select cables and accessories from t he Sim Net
accessor y progr am . Connect pr oduct s w it h t w o Sim Net
connectors in a daisy chain and use drop cables and T-
j oiners w hen r equir ed. For cable ext ension in- line cab le
j oiners ar e available. Tot al lengt h of Sim Net cable
inst alled in a sy st em should not exceed 150 m et er ( 5 00’) .
I f y ou plan t o extend your Sim Net system in t he fut ure it
m ay be advant ageous t o prepare for it by adding a few T-
j oiners in cent ral locat ion s. The T- j oiners pr ovide easy
access t o the network and can be replaced wit h a new
product, or t he new product can be connected via a drop
cable.
The connectors are weather proof according to I P66,
when pr operly installed. All unused Sim Net connect ors
m ust be fitt ed wit h the plast ic cap to protect t hem against
dirt and m oist ur e.
Sim N e t pow e r a nd t e rm ina t ion
The following rules should be observed when inst alling
Sim Net .
1 I t m ust have a separat e 12VDC power from t he
bat tery bus or t he circuit breaker board t o reduce
interference
2 I t will power a Sim Net com patible instrum ent
sy stem . Hence Sim Net t o ot her equipm ent can be

16 | Operation
supplied via the autopilot , see Figur e 2- 1 1 and
Figure 2 - 12.
3 Sim Net m ust be properly t erm inat ed, i.e. unless it
is a sm all sy st em ( see Figur e 2 - 1 and Figu re 2- 2)
t here m ust be t er m inat ions at each end of t he
Sim r ad backbone.
The Sim Net net work has to be term inat ed according t o
t he num ber and t ype of product s connect ed.
For addit ional inform at ion about Sim Net ask for the
