1.2 Practice fire safety
If the smoke alarm soun s, an you have not pushe
the test button, it is warning of a angerous
situation, your imme iate response is necessary. To
prepare for such occurrences, evelop family escape
plans, iscuss them with all househol members, an
practice them regularly.
1. Expose everyone to the soun of a smoke alarm
evice an explain what the soun means.
2. Determine two exits from each room an an
escape route to the outsi e from each exit.
3. Teach all househol members to touch the oor
an use an alternate exit when the oor is hot,

floor to stay below angerous smoke, fumes an
gases.
5. Determine a safe meeting place for all members
outsi e the buil ing.
2. What to do if the CO alarm sounds
Carbon monoxide(CO) alarm pattern
is four long beeps repeating every 5
seconds. The ALARM indicator(red)
will flash the same pattern.
WARNING! –Actuation of your CO alarm
indicates the presence of Carbon Monoxide (CO)
which can KILL YOU.
WARNING!–Action of this device indicates
the presence of dangerous levels of CO! CO can
be fatal!
If the alarm sounds:
1. Keep calm an open all oors an win ows to
increase the rate of ventilation. Stop using all fuel-
burning appliances an ensure, if possible, that
they are turne off,
e.g. for gas appliances, isolate the
emergency control valve;
2. If the alarm continues, then evacuate the
premises. Leave the oors an win ows open, an
only re-enter the buil ing when the alarm has
stoppe . In multi- occupancy an multi-storey
premises, ensure that all the occupants are alerte
to the risk;
3. Get me ical help for anyone suffering the effects
of carbon monoxi e poisoning, see Table 7.1, an
a vise that carbon monoxi e inhalation is
suspecte ;
4. Telephone the appropriate appliance servicing
an /or maintenance agency or, when necessary, the
relevant fuel supplier on their emergency number
or the national Gas Emergency Service Provi er, if
appropriate, so that the source of carbon monoxi e
emissions can be i entifie an correcte . Unless
the reason for the alarm is obviously spurious,
o not use the fuel-burning appliances again, until
they have been checke an cleare for use by a
competent person accor ing to national
regulations.
If problems are identified during this inspection,
have the equipment serviced immediately. Note
any combustion equipment not inspected by the

or alcohol usage, the har of hearing, etc.). If you
suspect that this evice may not alert a househol
member, you shoul install an maintain other
specialty smoke alarm or/an CO alarm evices.
Househol member must hear the alarm’s warning
soun an quickly respon to it to re uce the risk
of amage, injury, or eath that may result from
fire, If a househol member is har of hearing,
install other special smoke alarm or/an CO alarm
with lights or vibrating evices to alert occupants.
7. This Combo Smoke/CO alarm can only soun
their alarms when they etect smoke or etect
combustion particles or angerous level of CO in
the air. They o not sense heat, flame, or other
gas. The evice is esigne to give au ible warning
of a eveloping fire. However, many fires are fast -
burning, explosive, or intentional, an others are
cause by carelessness or safety hazar s. In this
scenario, smoke may not reach the unit to set the
alarm off QUICKLY ENOUGH to ensure a safe
escape.
8. This Combo Smoke/CO alarm have limitations.
The evice is not foolproof an is not warrante to
protect lives or property from fire. Smoke alarm
or/an CO alarm are not a substitute for insurance.
Homeowners an renters shoul insure their lives
an property. In a ition, it is possible for the

conditions. If in doubt consult a medical
practitioner.
7. Carbon monoxide (CO) overview
7.1 Toxic effects
Carbon monoxi e (CO) is a colourless, o ourless,
non-irritating gas classifie as a chemical
asphyxiant an whose toxic action is a irect result
of the hypoxia pro uce by a given exposure.
CO is rapi ly absorbe through the lungs, iffuses
across the alveolar capillary membrane an is
reversibly boun with haemoglobin as
carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb), however, a minute
amount is present in the plasma. The affinity of
haemoglobin for CO is over 200 times its affinity
for oxygen. This re uces the oxygen carrying
capacity of the bloo , an has an effect on the
issociation of oxyhaemoglobin, which further
re uces the oxygen supply to the tissues. CO is
chemically unchange in the bo y, an is eliminate
in expire air. The elimination is etermine by the
same factors that applie uring absorption. The
half-life while breathing room air is 2 h - 6,5 h
epen ing on the initial COHb level.
If the CO level in the inhale air is constant, the
level of COHb in the bloo will approach an
equilibrium (saturation) state after several hours.
However, the rate at which the equilibrium is
reache epen s on many factors, e.g. lung
ventilation rate (physical activity) an alveolar
capillary transfer, car iac parameters, bloo
haemoglobin concentration, barometric pressure,
oxygen an carbon ioxi e concentration in the
inhale air, but the two most important factors in

The relationship between the CO concentration an
the uration of exposure can be calculate for a
given %COHb, by parameterising the above factors.

7.2 Chronic effects on high risk groups
In ivi uals with coronary artery isease expose to
low levels of CO show re uce ability to exercise
an the time of onset of exercise-in uce angina
pectoris in such patients expose to low levels of CO
is re uce .
Carbon monoxi e rea ily crosses the placental
barrier an may en anger the normal evelopment of
the foetus.
A number of high-risk groups are particularly
sensitive to the effects of CO because of various
organ impairments or specific changes, mainly:
a) those whose oxygen carrying capacity is
ecrease ue to anaemia or other haemoglobin
isor ers;
b) those with increase oxygen nee s such as those
encountere in fever, hyperthyroi ism or pregnancy;
c) those with systemic hypoxia ue to respiratory
insufficiency;
) those with heart isease an any vascular
insufficiency.
WHO gui ance states that in or er to protect non-
smoking, mi le-age an el erly population groups
with ocumente or latent coronary artery isease
from acute ischaemic heart attacks, an to protect
the foetuses of non-smoking pregnant women from
untowar hypoxic effects, a COHb level of 2.5%
shoul not be excee e . The following WHO
gui eline values an perio s of time-weighte
average exposures have been etermine in such a
way that the COHb level of 2.5% is not excee e ,
even when a normal subject engages in light or
mo erate exercise:
• 100 mg/m³ (90 ppm) for 15 min;
• 60 mg/m³ (50 ppm) for 30 min;
• 30 mg/m³ (25 ppm) for 1 h;
• 10 mg/m³ (10 ppm) for 8 h.
7. Normal COHb levels
Un er normal con itions, humans typically have low
levels of COHb of between 0.3% an 0.7% present
within the bo y. These levels are consi ere neither
beneficial nor harmful.
7.4 Tobacco smoking
Tobacco smokers are expose to significant
concentrations of CO. In cigarette smokers, the
COHb concentration varies between 5%-9%, while
heavy cigar smokers may excee 10%.
WARNING!-Exposure to high levels of
carbon monoxide can be fatal or cause permanent
damage and disabilities.
WARNING!- The device may not prevent
the chronic effects of carbon monoxide exposure
and that the device will not fully safeguard
individuals at special risk.

11. Good safety habits - develop
and practice a plan of
escape .
12 / 14 GS88 -A Instruction Manual Rev. G

Prepare an practice a home escape plan twice a
year, inclu ing rills at night. Know of two ways
out of every room ( oor & win ow) an i entify a
meeting place outsi e the home where everyone will
gather once they have exite the resi ence. When
two people have reache the meeting place, one
shoul leave to call the fire epartment's telephone
number ( ______________ ) while the secon person
stays to account for a itional family members.
Establish a rule that once you're out, you never
re-enter under any circumstance!
■ Make a floor plan in icating all oors an
win ows an least two escape routes from each
room. Secon story win ows may nee a rope or
chain la er.
■ Have a family meeting an iscuss your escape
plan, showing everyone what to o in case of fire
an where to meet after they leave the house.
■ Ensure that small chil ren hear the alarm an
wake when it soun s. They must wake up in or er to
execute the escape plan. Practice allows all
occupants to test your plan before an emergency.
You may not be able to reach your chil ren. It is
important they know what to o.
■ Familiarise everyone with the soun of the smoke/
CO alarm an train them to leave your home when
they hear it.
■ Current stu ies have shown smoke/CO alarms may
not awaken all sleeping in ivi uals, an that it is the
responsibility of in ivi uals in the househol that
are capable of assisting others to provi e assistance
to those who may not be awakene by the alarm
soun , or to those who may be incapable of safely
evacuating the area unassiste .
■ Install an maintain fire extinguishers on every
level of the home an in the kitchen, basement an
garage. Know how to use a fire extinguisher prior to
an emergency.
