WARNING
• Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling and other construction

GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS
WARNING Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specications
provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed
below may result in electric shock, re and/or serious injury.
SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE
REFERENCE.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or
battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
Work area safety
Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of
ammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or
fumes.
Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause
you to lose control.
Electrical safety
Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use
any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodied plugs and matching
outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators,
ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed
or grounded.
Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will
increase the risk of electric shock.
Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power
tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled
cords increase the risk of electric shock.
When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power
tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the inuence of drugs,
alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in
serious personal injury.
Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment
such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for
appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before
connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
Carrying power tools with your nger on the switch or energising power tools that have the
switch on invites accidents.
Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a
key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better

control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and
gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in
moving parts.
If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities,
ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-
related hazards.
Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent
and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction
of a second.
Power tool use and care
Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct
power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that
cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if
detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories,
or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the
power tool accidentally.
Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar
with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are
dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving
parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s
operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are
caused by poorly maintained power tools.
Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting
edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions,
taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the
power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery
handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in
unexpected situations.
Service
Have your power tool serviced by a qualied repair person using only identical
replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
SAFETY WARNINGS FOR DRILLS
Safety instructions for all operations:
Use the auxiliary handle(s), if supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal
injury.
Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation
where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutting
accessory contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and
could give the operator an electric shock.

Safety instructions when using long drill bits:
Never operate at higher speed than the maximum speed rating of the drill bit. At higher
speeds, the bit is likely to bend if allowed to rotate freely without contacting the workpiece,
resulting in personal injury.
Always start drilling at low speed and with the bit tip in contact with the workpiece.
At higher speeds, the bit is likely to bend if allowed to rotate freely without contacting the
workpiece, resulting in personal injury.
Apply pressure only in direct line with the bit and do not apply excessive pressure. Bits
can bend causing breakage or loss of control, resulting in personal injury.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY WARNINGS
Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable
platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body leaves it unstable and may lead to
loss of control.
Do not drill, fasten or break into existing walls or other blind areas where electrical
wiring may exist. If this situation is unavoidable, disconnect all fuses or circuit breakers
feeding this worksite.
Always wear safety goggles or eye protection when using this tool. Use a dust mask or
respirator for applications which generate dust.
Secure the material being drilled. Never hold it in your hand or across legs. Unstable
support can cause the drill bit to bind causing loss of control and injury.
Never leave the trigger locked “ON”. Before plugging the tool in, check that the
trigger lock is “OFF”. Accidental start-ups could cause injury.
Position the cord clear of rotating bit. Do not wrap the cord around your arm or wrist.
If you lose control and have the cord wrapped around your arm or wrist it may entrap you and
cause injury.
Position yourself to avoid being caught between the tool or side handle and walls or
posts. Should the bit become bound or jammed in the work, the reaction torque of the tool
could crush your hand or leg.
If the bit becomes bound in the workpiece, release the trigger immediately, reverse the
direction of rotation and slowly squeeze the trigger to back out the bit. Be ready for a
strong reaction torque. The drill body will tend to twist in the opposite direction as the drill bit is
rotating.
Do not grasp the tool or place your hands too close to the spinning chuck or drill bit.
Your hand may be lacerated.
Do not use the switch “Lock-On” feature in situations where drill bit binding is likely. (For
example: just before the bit is ready to break through the material, anytime when using
a “Hole Saw”, auger bits........ etc.) When the bit binds, the drill’s body will twist or kick-back
in opposite direction and the release of the trigger “Lock-On” may be difcult.
Be aware of the location and setting of the switch “Lock-On” button. If the switch is
locked “ON” during the use, be ready for emergency situations to switch it “OFF”, by rst
pulling the trigger then immediately releasing it without pressing the “Lock-On” button.
When installing a drill bit, insert the shank of the bit well within the jaws of the chuck. If
the bit is not inserted deep enough, the grip of the jaws over the bit is reduced and the loss of
control is increased.
Do not use dull or damaged bits and accessories. Dull or damaged bits have a greater
tendency to bind in the workpiece.
When removing the bit from the tool avoid contact with skin and use proper protective
gloves when grasping the bit or accessory. Accessories may be hot after prolonged use.
Check to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from the drill before switching
the tool “ON”. Keys or wrenches can y away at high velocity striking you or a bystander.

Do not run the drill while carrying it at your side. A spinning drill bit could become
entangled with clothing and injury may result.
GFCI and personal protection devices like electrician’s rubber gloves and footwear will further
enhance your personal safety.
Do not use AC only rated tools with a DC power supply. While the tool may appear to
work, the electrical components of the AC rated tool are likely to fail and create a hazard to
the operator.
Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery hands cannot safely control
the power tool.
Develop a periodic maintenance schedule for your tool. When cleaning a tool be careful
not to disassemble any portion of the tool since internal wires may be misplaced or
pinched or safety guard return springs may be improperly mounted. Certain cleaning
agents such as gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ammonia, etc. may damage plastic parts.
Risk of injury to user. The power cord must only be serviced by a SKIL Factory Service Center
or Authorized SKIL Service Station.

Safety Symbols
The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your attention to possible dangers. The safety
symbols and the explanations with them deserve your careful attention and understanding.
The symbol warnings do not, by themselves, eliminate any danger. The instructions and
warnings they give are no substitutes for proper accident prevention measures.
WARNING Be sure to read and understand all safety instructions in this Owner's
Manual, including all safety alert symbols such as “DANGER,”
“WARNING,” and “CAUTION” before using this tool. Failure to following all instructions listed
below may result in electric shock, re, and/or serious personal injury.
The denitions below describe the level of severity for each signal word. Please read the manual
and pay attention to these symbols.
This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential
personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this
symbol to avoid possible injury or death.
DANGER DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will
result in death or serious injury.
WARNING WARNING indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION CAUTION, used with the safety alert symbol, indicates a hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, will result in minor or moderate injury.
Damage Prevention and Information Messages
These inform the user of important information and/or instructions that could lead to equipment
or other property damage if they are not followed. Each message is preceded by the word
“NOTICE”, as in the example below:

WARNING The operation of any power tools can result in foreign
objects being thrown into your eyes, which can result
in severe eye damage. Before beginning power tool operation, always
wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields and a full face
shield when needed. We recommend a Wide Vision Safety Mask for use
over eyeglasses or standard safety glasses with side shields. Always use
eye protection which is marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING Disconnect the plug from the power source before performing any assem-
bly, adjustments or changing accessories. Such preventive safety mea-
sures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally.
Variable-speed Trigger Switch
Your tool is equipped with a variable-speed trigger switch. The tool can be turned “ON” or “OFF”
by squeezing or releasing the trigger. The speed can be adjusted from the minimum to maxi-
mum nameplate RPM according to the pressure you apply to the trigger. Apply more pressure
to increase the speed and less pressure to decrease speed (Fig. 1).
“Lock-On” Button
The “Lock-On” button, located in the handle of your tool, allows for continuous operation a
maximum RPM without squeezing the trigger (Fig. 1).
TO LOCK TRIGGER “ON”: squeeze the trigger, depress the lock-on button and release trig-
ger.
TO UNLOCK THE TRIGGER: squeeze the trigger and release it without depressing the “Lock-
On” button.
WARNING If the “Lock-On” button is continuously being depressed, the trigger cannot
be released.
Reversing Switch Button
The reversing switch button is located above
the trigger switch and is used to reverse the
rotation of the bit. For forward rotation, move
the button to the far left. For reverse rotation,
move the button to the far right (Fig. 2).
NOTICE: Do not change the direction of rota-
tion until the tool comes to a complete stop.
Changing the rotation direction when the chuck
is rotating can cause damage to the tool.
Chuck Key & Storage Area
Your tool is equipped with a chuck key that is conveniently located on the cord protector,
where it is always handy and unlikely to get lost or misplaced (Fig. 1).

Inserting Bit
For small bits, open the jaws enough to open
the bit sufciently to insert the bit up to the
utes. For large bits, open the jaws sufciently
to insert the bit as far as it will go. Center the
bit as you close the jaws by hand. This
positions the bit properly, giving maximum
contact between the chuck jaws and the bit
shank.
To tighten the chuck, insert the key into each
of the three key holes in succession and rmly
tighten clockwise. The chuck can be released
by using one hole only (Fig. 3).
Auxiliary Handle
The auxiliary handle will provide additional control, support, and guidance for the tool. The
handle is adjustable to any position around the 360° front housing collar.
To mount, rotate the lower portion of the hand grip counter-clockwise to loosen it, push
upward on thumb grip provided, and then slide handle completely over the front housing
collar.
To adjust, push upward on thumb grip, move the handle to the desired position, and securely
tighten the lower portion of hand grip clockwise (Fig. 1).
Depth Gauge (Fig.4)
Your drilling depth can be pre-set and/or re-
peated with help from the depth gauge.
Loosen the auxiliary handle by turning the grip
counter clockwise. Insert the depth-gauge rod
through the hole in the auxiliary handle and ad-
just the rod so that the drill bit extends beyond
the rod to the desired depth. Make sure that
the bit has been fully inserted into the chuck
before setting the depth gauge.
Securely tighten the handle by turning the han-
dle grip clockwise.

Drill Level
Your tool is equipped with drill level, located on top of the housing, that will allow you to accu-
rately enter the workpiece and drill in a horizontal position (Fig. 1).
USING THE LEVEL: Place the drill bit where the hole is to be drilled, position the drill so the
bubble in the level is centered between the lines, then start drilling the hole. When the bit has
entered the workpiece, check from time to time to be sure that the bit is maintaining the hori-
zontal position.
Operating Tips
You will extend the life of your bits and do neater work if you always put the bit in contact with
the work before pulling the variable-speed trigger to start the drill. During operation, hold the
tool rmly and exert light, steady pressure. Too much pressure at low speed will stall the tool.
Too little pressure will keep the bit from cutting and cause excess friction by sliding over the
surface. This can be damaging to both tool and bit.
Drilling with Variable Speed
The variable-speed feature eliminates the need for center punches in hard materials. The vari-
able-speed trigger allows you to slowly increase RPM. By using a slow starting speed, you are
able to keep the bit from “wandering”. You can increase the speed by squeezing the trigger as
the bit “bites” into the work.
Drill Bits
Always inspect drill bits for excessive wear. Use only bits that are sharp and in good condition.
TWIST BITS are available with straight and reduced shanks for wood and light-duty metal
drilling. High-speed bits cut faster and last longer on hard materials.
Drilling Wood
Be certain that the workpiece is clamped or anchored rmly. Always apply pressure in a
straight line with the drill bit. Maintain enough pressure to keep the drill bit “biting”.
When drilling holes in wood, twist bits can be used. Twist bits may overheat unless pulled out
frequently to clear chips from the utes.
Use a “back-up” block of wood for work that is likely to splinter, such as thin materials.
You will drill a cleaner hole if you ease up on the pressure just before the bit breaks through
the wood. Then complete the hole from the back side.

Drilling Metal
There are two rules for drilling hard materials. First, the harder the material, the greater the
pressure you need to apply to the tool. Second, the harder the material, the slower the speed.
Here are some tips for drilling in metal:
• Lubricate the tip of the bit occasionally with cutting oil, except when drilling soft metals such
as aluminum, copper or cast iron.
• If the hole to be drilled is fairly large, it’s often faster in the long run to drill a smaller hole rst,
then enlarge it to the required size with a larger bit.
• Maintain enough pressure to assure that the bit does not just spin in the hole. This will dull
the bit and greatly shorten its life.

MAINTENANCE
Service
WARNING To avoid accidents always disconnect the tool from the power supply
before cleaning or performing any maintenance.
WARNING Preventive maintenance performed by unauthorized personnel may
result in misplacing internal wires and components, which could
cause serious hazard. We recommend that all tool service be performed by a SKIL Factory
Service Center or Authorized SKIL Service Station.
Tool Lubrication
Your SKIL tool has been properly lubricated and is ready to use. It is recommended that tools
with gears be re-greased with a special gear lubricant at every brush change.
Carbon Brushes
The brushes and commutator in your tool have been engineered for many hours of
dependable service. To maintain peak efciency of the motor, we recommend every two to six
months the brushes be examined. Only genuine SKIL replacement brushes specially designed
for your tool should be used.
Bearings
Bearings that become noisy (due to heavy load or very abrasive material cutting) should be
replaced at once to avoid overheating or motor failure.
Cleaning
WARNING To avoid accidents always disconnect the tool from the power supply
before cleaning or performing any maintenance. The tool may be
cleaned most effectively with compressed dry air. Always wear safety goggles when
cleaning tools with compressed air.
Ventilation openings and switch levers must be kept clean and free of foreign matter. Do not
attempt to clean by inserting pointed objects through openings.
CAUTION Certain cleaning agents and solvents damage plastic parts. Some of
these are: gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents,
ammonia and household detergents that contain ammonia.
Storage
Store the tool indoors in a place that is inaccessible to children. Keep away from corrosive
agents.
EXTENSION CORDS
WARNING If an extension cord is necessary, a cord with adequate size conductors
that is capable of carrying the current necessary for your tool must be
used. This will prevent excessive voltage drop, loss of power or overheating. Grounded tools
must use 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong plugs and receptacles.
NOTE: The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.

Chervon North America (“Seller”) warrants to the original purchaser only, that all SKIL
consumer portable, benchtop and HD and SHD Heavy Duty power tools will be free from
defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year from date of purchase. SKIL

L’expression « outil électrique » utilisée dans les avertissements correspond aux outils
électriques alimentés sur secteur (à l) ou alimentés par piles (sans l).
Mesures de sécurité dans l’aire de travail
Maintenez l’aire de travail propre et bien éclairée. Les aires de travail sombres et
encombrées sont propices aux accidents.
N’utilisez pas d’outils électriques dans un endroit présentant un risque d’explosion,
par exemple en présence de liquides, de gaz ou de poussières inammables. Les outils
électriques produisent des étincelles pouvant causer un incendie en raison de la poussière et
des vapeurs.
Gardez les enfants et les autres personnes à l’écart lorsque vous utilisez un outil
électrique. Une distraction peut vous faire perdre la maîtrise de l’outil.
Consignes de sécurité relatives à l’électricité
Les ches des outils électriques doivent correspondre à la prise. Ne modiez jamais

emmêlé.
N’utilisez pas le cordon d’alimentation de façon à l’endommager. Ne transportez jamais
un outil électrique en le tenant par son cordon, et ne tirez jamais sur le cordon pour le
débrancher. Tenez le cordon d’alimentation éloigné des sources de chaleur, de l’huile,

Utilisez un équipement de protection. Portez toujours des lunettes de sécurité. Le
port d’un équipement de protection (comme un masque antipoussières, des chaussures de
protection antidérapantes, un casque de sécurité ou un dispositif de protection auriculaire),
lorsque les conditions l’exigent, réduit les risques de blessures.
Prenez des mesures an d’éviter que l’outil se mette en marche accidentellement.
Veillez à ce que l’interrupteur soit en position d’arrêt avant de connecter le produit
au courant ou au bloc-pile, de le ramasser ou de le transporter. Transporter les outils
électriques avec le doigt sur la gâchette ou brancher les outils lorsque l’interrupteur est à la
position de marche augmente les risques d’accident.
Enlevez toute clé de serrage ou clé à molette avant de mettre l’outil électrique
en marche. Une clé de réglage oubliée sur une pièce rotative de l’outil électrique peut
occasionner des blessures graves.
Ne tendez pas les bras trop loin. Gardez une posture sécuritaire et un bon équilibre
en tout temps. Vous pourrez ainsi mieux maîtriser l’outil électrique lorsque des situations
inattendues se présentent.
Habillez-vous convenablement. Ne portez pas de vêtements amples ni de bijoux.
Gardez vos cheveux et vos vêtements loin des pièces mobiles. Les vêtements amples,
les bijoux ou les cheveux longs risquent de se prendre dans les pièces mobiles.
Si des dispositifs sont fournis pour le branchement d’équipement de dépoussiérage
et de collecte de la poussière, veillez à ce qu’ils soient branchés et utilisés de manière
appropriée. L’emploi d’un dépoussiéreur contribue à réduire les dangers liés à la poussière.
Même si vous connaissez parfaitement ces outils parce que vous les utilisez souvent,
soyez vigilant et respectez les principes de sécurité. Il suft d’être négligent une fraction
de seconde pour se blesser gravement.
Utilisation et entretien d’un outil électrique
Ne forcez pas l’outil électrique. Utilisez l’outil électrique approprié à la tâche que vous

accidentellement l’outil électrique en marche.
Rangez les outils électriques inutilisés hors de la portée des enfants et d’autres
personnes qui ne connaissent pas bien l’outil électrique ni les présentes instructions.
Les outils électriques sont dangereux s’ils se retrouvent entre les mains d’utilisateurs qui ne
savent pas s’en servir.
