Damaged cartons generally mean damaged contents. Refuse any shipment where
there is major damage to the contents or before you sign have the delivery person make
a full description of breakage or damage on both copies of the freight bill. Be sure to
uncrate your wheel as soon as possible. You have only 15 days to file a claim for con-
cealed damage. In case of concealed damage discovered during unpacking, save all
cartons and packing materials. Contact the carrier immediately and make an appoint-
ment for an inspection.
Read the inspection report and enter all pertinent information or objections before sign-
ing. You will keep one copy of this. This is not a claim. The inspector will have claim
forms for you. These must be filled out and sent to the delivery carrier within 15 days of
delivery.
We recommend you save the shipping containers in case you should ever have to re-
turn the wheel for service.

Assembly
Kick Wheel Assembly
1. With Bracket A and the 4 smallest carriage bolts provided, bolt pieces 1 & 2 snugly
together (do not over tighten). Turn these pieces upside down for easy access to the
nuts. Use lock washers on the nut end of the bolts (see figure 1). For proper position-
ing of Bracket A, temporarily hold the foot rests (Piece 3) between the straight seat post
on Piece 2, and the sides on Piece 1, allowing 1/2" additional space between the end of
the foot rest and Piece 1 (see figure 2).
2. Thomas Stuart's design features a unique system for leveling its frame to uneven
floors. By pushing the 2 sides of Piece 1 closer to each other before tightening Bracket
A, you will eliminate the frame from rocking side to side. By pulling these 2 sides apart,
you will eliminate any rocking from front to back.
3. After positioning, tighten the nuts on Bracket A securely. Small wood pieces may
have to be placed under the legs on floors of extreme unevenness.
4. Using the 3 flat head machine screws provided, attach the table top (with the counter
sunk hole facing up) first to the holes in Piece 1, then the long screw in the front leg
of Piece 2 (see figure 3). The front leg of Piece 2 will be slightly shorter in height than
Piece 1. Only hand tighten the screw that inserts through the front leg. This is the only
bolt that does not have to be tightened all the way. It should only be tightened enough
to make the table tilt slightly away from the potter using the wheel.

5. Using 2 of the smallest hex head bolts provided, attach the angle iron to the
top of the table with the name plate on the right hand side (see figure 3). Use 2
flat washers under the table before placing the nuts on the bolts.
6. Attach the lower bearing to the bottom bearing bar of Piece 2 using the 2 lon-
gest carriage bolt (see figure 4).
7. Place the shaft in the wheel head and tighten securely (see figure 4). You
may find it necessary to place the wheel head upside down on a piece of card-
board, and with a piece of wood on the end of the shaft, tap the wood gently with
a hammer until the shaft properly fits in the wheel head.
DO NOT HAMMER DIRECTLY ON THE SHAFT OR WHEEL HEAD. DO NOT
FILE OR POUND ON THE SHAFT. IT IS MACHINED TO FIT THE WHEEL HEAD
EXACTLY.
All our wheel heads have been partially drilled from the bottom for 10" bat pins.
To use these holes, you must complete the hole with a 1/4" drill bit.
8. Place the shaft in the lower bearing.
9. Align the shaft in a vertical position and remove it from the lower bearing.
Both bearings used on the Thomas Stuart wheel are floating bearings. While the
bearing housing remains bolted securely to the wheel frame, the inner bearing
will move in any direction (float) so that both bearings will align with each other.

10. Place the flywheel on top of the lower bearing (see figure 4). Look through the hole
in the center of the flywheel to see that the flywheel is positioned directly on top of the
bearing.
11. Slide the upper bearing on the shaft with the set screws on the bottom side.
12. Slide the shaft through the flywheel, then the lower bearing making sure it slides
into the lower bearing. CAUTION: IF THE SHAFT DOES NOT SLIDE THROUGH AND
SIT PROPERLY, REMOVE AND REPEAT INSTRUCTIONS FROM STEP 8. Make sure
the shaft is all the way through the bottom bearing but not pushed so far as to rub on the
bottom bearing bar. If the shaft is not all the way through the bearing, the flywheel will
move sideways and make a knocking sound. If the shaft touches the bottom bearing
bar, the wheel will make a heaving motion. You might have to look under the flywheel
between the bearing and lower pipe to make sure the bottom of the shaft is visible, but
not touching the bottom pipe.
13. Using 4 flat washers, attach the upper bearing to the angle iron in this order -- bolt,
washer, bearing, angle iron, washer, and nut.
14. Tighten the set screws on the flywheel securely.
15. Attach the wood seat to the inner seat post with the 2 short flat head machine
screws and wing nuts. Four wedges are provided if you wish to have the seat tilt slightly
forward. Use 2 wedges between the wood and the metal plate, and 2 wedges under the
metal plate to allow the wing nut to tighten firmly against the wedge at the correct angle
(see figure 3).

16. Insert the inner seat post (Piece 4) into the outer seat post. Secure it at the proper
height with the locking handle tightened firmly. This piece may be rotated 180 degrees
to give you more or less space for your legs.
17. Assemble the foot rests into Bracket C on the outer seat post of Piece 2 using 2
carriage bolts, 2 washers, and 2 nuts. The carriage bolts should go thru the bracket
so that you are tightening the nuts on the outside area of the pipe frame. Do not com-
pletely tighten this bracket until the other ends are in place. Set the other ends of the
foot rests in Bracket B attached to the sides of Piece 1 with the remaining carriage bolts,
washers, and nuts. (Make sure the bolts point away from the center of the wheel so no
one is injured if they happen to slip while using the wheel.) Do not over tighten. Before
tightening, make sure that there is adequate space (approximately 2” - 3”) between the
foot rests and the flywheel. When all of the Brackets are set, place the 4 cap nuts on
the ends. Do not over tighten.
18. After completely assembling the wheel, clean the footrests (Piece 3). Completely
remove all oily substances. Let this dry completely. Without touching the back, remove
paper backing from the skid-proof strips. Place on footrests. Avoid air bubbles and
rub strips for a few minutes to guarantee good adhesion. Temperature must be at least
65 degrees Fahrenheit.
19. Tighten the two set screws on the bottom bearing. This might be easier by tilting
the wheel forward so that the front edge of the table top touches the floor.
20. The splash pan fits both a 12" work head or a 14" work head. The Thomas Stuart
splash pan has exclusive mounting clips that slip over the table angle iron. The wheel
head should be high enough only to allow the clips on the splash pan to pass over the
hook onto the steel angle.

21. To prevent the shaft from rusting, apply a light coat of vegetable or motor oil.
22. If you need to dismantle your kick wheel at anytime, we recommend you do not
remove the wheel head from the shaft. When you tighten the set screws on the wheel
head to the shaft, they make a slight indentation that will affect the trueness of the wheel
head if it is removed.
Maintenance
1. The bearings come pre-lubricated and do not need to be greased until they begin
to squeak. This is usually necessary every four or five years of average studio use. Be
careful not to over lubricate the bearings.
2. Re-coat the wooden surfaces as needed with a gloss marine varnish available at
most hardware stores.
