SECTION 1
Introduction
The SMART modelTA6300 is a professional six-
channelamplifier featuringDC protection, quick
interconnectwith SMART companionproducts,
softclip speaker protectionand massiveheatsink
extrusionswith internalD.C.fan assistto make
sureyour amplifier stays cool evenwhen the
music is hot. TA6300 delivers 200 watts per
channel into 8 ohms on five channels simulta-
neous with 400 watts into 4 ohms on the sixth
(subwoofer)channel.
Circuit Description
Toassure absolutelong-term reliability, the
output section of each channel incorporates
multipleMotorola PowerTransistors,which
providethree timesthe amplifiers ratedpower in
watts of dissipation per channel. The output
stageis arranged ina fully complementary
formatfor classAB/2operation. The bias current
isevenly distributed amongall outputdevices.
Biasthermal compensation isaccomplished by
thermallymating abipolar semiconductor
junctionto the heat-producingoutput device.
Triple diffused highpower drivertransistorsare
employed along with high speed, high voltage
siliconannular devices forthe pre-driver and
inverterstages. Utilization ofthese components
provide the required separation of FT break
pointsfor absolutestability. Fully complemen-
tarydrive and loadingis utilized throughout.
Only 20dB of negative feedback is used to
reduceforward transferdistortion tominimum
levels. VItype energylimiters are incorporated
forshort circuitprotectionof theamplifier. Due
tothe unusually large safe operating areaof
outputstage, the limitersdo notactuate until
drivinga forty-five degreereactive load of under
2ohms at full power.
Construction
The amplifiers aredesigned on anall-modular
conceptpermitting rigorouspre-assembly mod-
uletesting andmaximum service accessibility.
Eachfunctional module isfully tested before
finalassembly. Although components of the
highestquality are usedthroughout, each ampli-
fieris burned in,prior toshipment, at theworst
caseoperating point toeliminate anypossibility
ofcomponent malfunction. All chassiscompo-
nentsare precision machinedfrom high quality
aluminum and 16-gauge sheet steel stock. The
entirepackage concept isdirected toward
maximumefficiency ofspace and structure,
accountingfor the compact size and light
weight.
SECTION 2
Installation
AllSMART amplifiers aredesigned for mounting
in a standard 19-inch equipment rack, or many
of the 19-inch rack type portable cases avail-
able. TheTA6300 require 7 inches of vertical
panel space, with 15" inches required behind
the panel. Total depth including the handles is
16-3/8" inches. Front panels are machined from
solidaluminum stock, witha blackpowdercoat
finishand sturdy rackmount handles.
Placementof theamplifier isnot criticalfor
normaloperation, providedsufficientairflow is
allowed to reach the heatsink array. If the unit is
to be placed on a shelf, or a similar unenclosed
area, allow four inches of clearance behindthe
fanair intake topermit airflowthrough the array.
Ifthe amplifier isto be mounted inan equipment
rackor cabinet withheat producing equipment,
besure that environmentaloperating tempera-
tures do not exceed 55 degrees C (131F).
Should overheating occur because of inad-
equateventilation, thetemperature protection
circuitrywillautomaticallyprotect theamplifier.
Whena safe operatingtemperature isrestored,
theamplifier willreturnto normaloperation.

INSTALLATION & OPERATION
3
Becausethe amplifiers arecapable of delivering
highpower froma relativelysmallphysical
package, considerable heat can develop in
cabinetscontaining severalcomponents. A
good rule of thumb to adopt is to provide forced
air cooling in any enclosure containing four or
moreelectronic components.
SECTION 3
Features
Power Connections
The SMARTTA6300 power amplifiers are
specifiedfor operationfrom 120/240Volt
50/60 Hz mains supply.
Equipmentfor domestic(USA) consumption
includes a captive cord with a three pin
polarizedplug. DO NOT REMOVETHE CEN-
TERGROUNDINGPIN!
Innew installations andportable soundsystems,
orany situation in whichthe mains power is
suspect,it iswise to confirmappropriate voltage
andline polarity BEFOREconnecting the instru-
mentto power sources.
Thermal Protection
Certainconditions ofoperation (restrictedair-
flowcooling, sustained highpower operation
intolow impedance loads) can resultin a rise in
outputdevice casetemperature sufficient to
affecttheamplifier’sperformance.
Should the heatsink reach 95 C, the output will
automaticallybe disconnected fromthe load
(loudspeaker)and will remaindisconnected
until the temperature drops below 95 C. The
action of removing the load has the effect of
eliminatingoutput current. This,inturn, results
inan immediate andrapid drop in temperature.
The load willautomatically be reconnected
when the temperature drops below 95 C.
FanAssist Cooling
The SMARTTA6300 is equipped with a convec-
tioncooling systemutilizing massiveheatsink
extrusionsand twofans.
Soft Clip Speaker Protection
The SMARTTA6300 incorporates Soft Clip
Speakercircuitry. Thiscircuitryprevents the
amplifierfrom being driveninto a hardclip state,
which prevents speaker damage caused by the
amplifierbeing over drivenor into DCstate.
Selectable Input Sensitivity
The SMARTTA6300 is equipped with selectable
inputsensitivity. Thefactory setting is 1v for
rated output, .775v and 1.5v are also available.
If you would like to change the setting set by the
factoryyou may contactthe factory forinstruc-
tions.

12 POSITION PHOENIX INPUT CONNEC-
TION
The six unbalanced inputs are connected via 12
position phoenix connector. The pinouts are
labeled on the rear of theTA6300.
GROUND LIFT SWITCH
TheGROUND/LIFTis providedtoeliminate
groundloops between thisamplifier and a
preamplifierthat canoccur incertain installa-
tions.
OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
Outputconnections are viafive-way binding
posts, identified as topolarity withred and black
terminals. We suggest the use of dual banana
plugs as a convenient and reliable method of
hook-up. They allow rapid removal for polarity
reversals. This featureis often necessaryin the
checkout and adjustmentof multi-element
biamplifiedand triamplifiedsoundsystems.
Heavy Class 11 wire may be used by unscrew-
ingthe large plasticportion ofthe output termi-
naland inserting thewire into the holeprovided.
Note:It isextremely importantwhen making
wire connections that no wire stand or end
touchesan adjacent terminal!
A 9 pin D-type subminiature connector is pro-
vided for quick connection to SMART’s MN600
Cinema STEREOCHECK booth monitor through
astandard 9 pin D-type maleto female cable.
AIR INTAKE
Two DC fans are provided. Fan guards are
providedto protect fromany large debris stop-
pingthe fans orgetting inside theamplifier. Fan
airfilters may bepurchasedfrom thefactory.
NOTE:Airfilters mustbe cleanat alltimes to
assureproper amplifier cooling. Aperiodic
maintenanceschedule is recommended de-
pendingon environmental conditions.
AC POWER CORD
TheTA6300 is pre-wired at the factory for the
voltage indicated on the rear panel or on the
power cord of the amplifier. Plug the power
cord into anAC outlet that will deliver the
propervoltage and currentfor amplifier opera-
tion.
CAUTION:
TheTA6300 amplifier is a product of the most
advanced technology and manufacturing tech-
niquesand is fullyprotected against overheat-
ing,input overload andshorted or mismatched
loads. Asis the casewith anyprecision instru-
ment, some care should be taken in the unit’s
