Important Information i
Important Information
This guide describes the installation of the SMART LightRaise™ projector mount on a
standard concrete or cinder block wall or a supported framed wall, as detailed on page 12. If
you have any other material cladding your wall (such as brick and masonry), consult
professionals with the appropriate expertise. We don't recommend installation on an
unsupported wall because writing on the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard may cause
the boom to vibrate and interfere with the board's orientation.
A qualified service technician must install your LightRaise unit.
WARNING
The projector used with the SMART LightRaise projector mount is a high-brightness light source. Do
not view directly or stare into the beam of light created by the projector. Be especially careful to
instruct children not to look in the direction of, or stare at, the beam of light.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this product to rain or moisture.
WARNING
The SMART LightRaise unit is projector-specific. When you order your unit, the model of boom and
console as well as the projector mounting accessories are selected to match the projector you have
specified. Do not mount any other projector or equipment. Any other weight hung from the LightRaise
boom may cause the boom to bend or break, which can injure anyone beneath it.
WARNING for European Customers
The SMART LightRaise console should be used only with European TN and TT power distribution
systems.
It is not suitable for older, IT-type power distribution systems found in some European countries. "This
system (IT-type) is widely used isolated from earth, in some installations in France, with impedance to
earth, at 230/400V, and in Norway, with voltage limiter, neutral not distributed, at 230V line-to-line."
(IEC60950:1999)
Contact qualified personnel if you are uncertain of the type of power system available where the
SMART LightRaise unit is to be installed.

ii Important Information
Other Precautions
For operating safety and to avoid damage to the SMART LightRaise projector mount, read this
guide carefully before setting up and using it. Observe the following precautions:
1 Adding more weight or applying an unexpected force to the boom may cause it to break
and possibly cause injury.
2 Do not hang anything from the boom, hit or jostle it in any way or remove the struts.
3 Sitting or leaning on the console may cause damage.
4 The upper boom bracket and console bracket must each be fixed to at least two wall studs
or two places in concrete. We recommend the brackets be attached to each stud in more
than one location. We don't recommend installation on an unsupported wall because this
type of wall may cause the boom to vibrate when someone is writing on the SMART
Board interactive whiteboard. See page 12 for a definition of an unsupported wall.
5 Avoid setting up and using the LightRaise projector mount in an area with excessive levels
of dust, moisture, humidity or cigarette smoke.
6 Do not attempt to modify the power cord. Handle the power cord carefully and avoid
excessive bending. The power cord should be routed so that it is unlikely to be walked on
or pinched by items placed upon or against it. If you must run the cable over the floor, lay
the cable in a flat, straight line and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable management
strip in a contrasting color.
7 The LightRaise console is equipped with a three-wire grounding-type plug. This plug will
only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. If you are unable to insert the plug into the
outlet, contact your electrician to replace the obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the grounding-type plug.
8 The installation must ensure direct and clear access to the main power plug.
9 Unplug the console during electrical storms or if the console will not be used over a long
period of time.
10 If replacement parts are required, the service technician must use replacement parts
specified by SMART Technologies Inc. or parts with the same characteristics as the
original that have been approved by SMART Technologies Inc.
11 Ensure the door brackets do not pinch the console cables. See page 46 for the proper
positioning of these cables as they leave the console.
12 Only authorized personnel should service the unit. Do not service your projector while it is
attached to the boom. Remove it for servicing. For details, read the supplemental
instructions supplied with the projector mount.
13 If the power supply to the unit is cut off while the system is running, wait at least two
minutes before you press the System On button. The LightRaise console may not power
up because it is waiting until the projector lamp has cooled. Consult the projector's user
manual for instructions.

3 Mount the SMART Board interactive whiteboard following the instructions that came with
your board. However, connect it to the console's Control System as described on page 45.
The minimum distance between the console and the board is 1½" (3.8 cm). The
instructions in this guide assume that you are mounting the console 2" (5 cm) above the
floor.
NOTE: If you are not using a supported projector, the control panel on your console won't
work as described in this guide.
4 Connect the cables inside the console and to your supported projector following the

SMART LightRaise Installation and User's Guide 1
Introducing the SMART LightRaise
Projector Mount
The SMART LightRaise projector mount is an integrated solution to house your projector, your
computer and either a VCR or DVD player connected to your front-projection SMART Board
interactive whiteboard. The LightRaise projector mount eliminates the need for a projector
ceiling mount. Hidden from sight are the connections between the wall-mounted SMART
Board 560 or 580 interactive whiteboard, supported projector and either a computer running
the Windows operating system or a Macintosh G4 computer.
The LightRaise projector mount consists of two main parts: a boom and a console.
The boom perches over your wall-mounted SMART Board interactive whiteboard to hold an
approved projector the correct distance from the board. The console nestles beneath the
board, housing an internal computer, a VCR or DVD player, and the cable connections for all
components. A wireless infrared (IR) keyboard also comes with the LightRaise console.
Cables to connect an external computer are stowed at the console's side so guest laptop
users can easily connect and quickly access the functionality of the SMART Board interactive
whiteboard.

Console
The Fully Installed SMART LightRaise Projector Mount
NOTE: You may have purchased one of the parts separately from the other. While most of the
information contained in this guide pertains to either the console or the boom, most installation
instructions are aimed at the installer of both pieces. Read carefully the information on
pages iii–iv for recommended sections for your installation.

2SMART LightRaise Installation and User's Guide
The LightRaise mount is easily installed by a qualified service technician, who may be a
SMART Technologies Inc. technical staff member or your SMART reseller, or any member of
your own staff qualified to perform the installation.
The LightRaise projector mount requires little maintenance. Its presence makes working
with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard easier. Since your projector doesn't get
jostled, you don't need to repeatedly perform an orientation procedure on your interactive
whiteboard.
The features of the LightRaise projector mount include:
•a built-in audio system with two speakers
•a wireless infrared (IR) keyboard
•easy access to your internal computer, VCR or DVD player
•easy access to the control panel, which contains projector and volume controls
•a control system for all your cable connections
•all cables required to connect your projector, SMART Board interactive whiteboard,
internal computer, VCR or DVD player, and external computer
•a hinged boom for easy access to the projector
•tamper-resistant fasteners and a locking console to secure your equipment
Supported Projectors
SMART Technologies Inc. has tested various projectors with the LightRaise boom. Our
requirements include projector weight, throw distance and minimal tilt of the SMART
Board whiteboard in order to get a clear, square projected image. An up-to-date listing of
supported projectors is available on our Web site in the Specifications section for the
LightRaise product (www.smarttech.com/lightraise).
NOTE: The projectors used with the LightRaise projector mount are smaller and generate
more heat than larger models. If your projected image quality deteriorates after the
LightRaise mount has been in use, check the projector's power or status indicator. If it is
flashing, turn the LightRaise console off for approximately five minutes to give the
projector a chance to cool down. Consult your projector's user manual for information on
how to interpret its power and status indicators.
Room Dimensions and Requirements
The LightRaise projector mount is designed for a room at least 6' x 10' (1.8 m x 3.0 m) with a
ceiling of 96" (244 cm). In addition, 42" (183 cm) of wall space width is required to
accommodate the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. If anything hangs from the ceiling,
ensure it won't interfere with the boom and the projector.
If your chosen location doesn't meet these dimensions or requirements, see pages 11–12 for
more alternatives or call SMART Technologies Inc. for recommendations.

Installation Overview
The SMART LightRaise projector mount should be installed by a qualified service technician
and an assistant.
A qualified service technician includes:
•your SMART reseller
•SMART technical staff member
•a qualified member of your staff familiar with the structure of the room
If you're installing a new SMART Board interactive whiteboard at the same time as the
console and boom, unpack the board and its accessories and check the contents against the
SMART Board Setup Instructions. However, unless you've purchased only the console, don't
use the SMART Board Setup Instructions for setting up and mounting the board. Instead, use
the instructions in this guide. Also, don't use the wall bracket shipped with the SMART Board
interactive whiteboard, use the hanger bracket shipped with the LightRaise projector mount.
NOTE: If you've purchased only the console, use the SMART Board Setup Instructions to
mount your board.
Installation should take two people approximately two to three hours.
Room Specifications
We recommend that you install the LightRaise projector mount in a room at least 6' x 10'
(1.8 m x 3.0 m) with a ceiling of 96"(244 cm). Although the product can be installed in a room
with a minimum ceiling height of 95" (241 cm), this installation would result in the top of the
SMART Board interactive whiteboard's writing surface being 77" (196 cm) from the floor and
the console being 1½" (4 cm) off the floor. Alternatively, you can mount the console beside the
whiteboard.
The LightRaise boom requires 1¾" (4.5 cm) between the ceiling and the top of the upper
boom bracket. If you are installing the product in a room with a ceiling of 95" (241 cm), you
must lower the console bracket by 1" (2.5 cm).
Ensure nothing hangs from the ceiling in a way that will interfere with the boom and the
projector.
The brackets supporting the LightRaise projector mount must be installed directly into either
concrete or studs. This guide provides installation instructions for walls made of concrete,
cinder blocks and supported walls with either wood or metal studs. If your wall is made of any
other material, such as brick and masonry, you should consult professionals with expertise in
that area. If this type of wall is unsupported, do not use the LightRaise projector mount. See
Wall Specifications and Mounting Information on page 12.
If your chosen location doesn't meet these specifications, call SMART Technologies Inc. for
recommendations for your particular situation.

12 SMART LightRaise Installation and User's Guide
Wall Specifications and Mounting Information
For optimal performance, the LightRaise projector mount must be mounted on a stable wall.
Otherwise, the motion involved with writing on the interactive whiteboard may cause the boom
to vibrate, which in turn may disturb the projected image enough to interfere with the
whiteboard's orientation.
Ideally, the wall on which you mount the LightRaise projector mount should be structural or a
demising wall. We recommend you install the projector mount on a wall made of cinder block,
concrete or a supported wall framed with either wood or metal studs. An example of a properly
supported, framed wall is one where the wall studs extend upward and are anchored at top
and bottom into the structure of the building.
For concrete or cinder block walls, drill holes using the supplied drill bit and then insert the
appropriate supplied screws. If you're mounting the boom on a cinder block wall, drill holes
into the center of the block, where possible, because the rib in the center of the block will
provide more support.
For wood-framed walls, screws can be inserted directly into the wooden stud. Use drywall
anchors, inserted with a Phillips screwdriver not a hammer, for any screw inserted only into
drywall (not studs), such as the keyhole locations marked with the template tool. However, for
the two outer mounting holes for the console mounting bracket, use the supplied toggle bolt
anchors and fasteners.
For walls with metal studs, use the supplied toggle bolt anchors and fasteners inserted into the
center of the metal studs. Use drywall anchors, inserted with a Phillips screwdriver not a
hammer, for any screw inserted only into drywall (not studs), such as the keyhole locations
marked with the template tool. Also, you'll need to use the supplied toggle bolt anchors and
fasteners at the outer mounting holes for the console mounting bracket.
For proper installation on walls with studs (either wood or metal), the mounting brackets must
be fixed to two or more studs. If your wall studs are 16" (40.6 cm) on center, the screws for the
upper boom bracket and the console mounting bracket must go into at least three studs, and
the screws for the lower boom bracket must go into two studs. If your wall studs are 24" (81.2
cm) on center, screws for the upper boom bracket and the console mounting bracket must go
into at least two studs and the screws for the lower boom bracket must go into two studs.
Tools Required
Before beginning the installation process, obtain the hex keys from the hardware accessory
kits. You'll also need the following tools:
•Phillips #2 hand screwdriver
•electric screwdriver with Phillips #2 driver bit
•measuring tape, bubble level and pencil
•stud finder
•9/16" (15 mm) wrench
•electric drill and either a ¼" (6 mm) and a ½" (13 mm) drill bit if your installation is on a
drywall-clad wall with studs or the supplied concrete drill bit if your installation is on a
concrete or cinder block wall
•a plastic cutting tool (such as a hacksaw or tin snips)
You should use a ladder to assist with your installation. Please ensure you use the appropriate
ladder properly. Read the documentation that comes with your ladder for safety and
instructional information.
