Using this manual
The instructions in this manual are for the four models listed in the table below. Before
you start reading this manual and operating your camcorder, checkthe model number
by looking at the bottom of your camcorder.The DCR-TRV740is the model usedfor
illustration purposes. Otherwise, themodel nameis indicated in the illustrations. Any
differences in operation areclearly indicated in the text, for example, “except DCR-
TRV240.”
As you read through this manual, buttons and settings on your camcorder are shown in
capital letters.

When you carry out an operation, you canhear abeepto indicate that the operation is

Before using your camcorder
With your digital camcorder,you can use Hi8 klim/Digitalt( E3 video cassettes.Your
camcorder records and plays backpictures in the Digital8 E3 system.Also, your
camcorder plays backtapesrecorded in the Hi8 blim/standard 8q (analog)system.
You, however, cannot usethe functions in “Advanced Playback Operations” on page
63to 70for playback in the Hi8 kli@/standard 8q system.To enablesmooth transition,
we recommend that you do not mix pictures recorded in the Hi8 )Iim/standard 8H
with the Digital8 E3 systemon a tape.
Note on TV color systems _;
TV color systemsdiffer from country to country. To view your recordings on a TV, you
needan NTSCsystem-basedTV.

Using this manual
Precautions on camcorder care
Lens and LCD screen/finder
l The LCD screen and the finder are manufactured using extremely high-precision
technology so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use.
However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, F S.
blue or green in color) that constantly appear on the LCD screen and the finder. 2
These points are normal in the manufacturing process and do not affect the 2
recording in any way. %

l Do not let your camcorder becomewet. Keepyour camcorder away from rain and sea a
water. Letting your camcorder becomewet may causeyour camcorder to malfunction.
Sometimesthis malfunction cannot berepaired [a].
QNever leaveyour camcorder exposedto temperatures above 60°C(140”F),such asin a
car parked in the sun or under direct sunlight [b].
l Becareful when placing the cameranear awindow or outdoors. Exposing the LCD
screen,the finder or the lensto direct sunlight for long periods may cause
malfunctions [cl.
l Do not directly shoot the sun. Doing somight causeyour camcorder to malfunction.
Take pictures of the sun in low light conditions suchasdusk [d].

(1) Lift up the viewfinder.
(2) Slide the battery pack down until it clicks.
To remove the battery pack
(1) Lift up the viewfinder.
(2) Slide the battery pack out in the direction of the arrow while pressing BATT
(battery) release lever down.

Connecting to a wall outlet
When you useyour camcorder for along time, we recommend that you power it from a
wall outlet using the AC power adaptor.
(I) Open the DC IN jack cover, and connect the AC power adaptor to the DC IN
jack on your camcorder with the plug’s A mark facing up.
(2) Connect the power cord to the AC power adaptor.
(3) Connect the power cord to a wall outlet.

PRECAUTION
Thesetisnot disconnected from the AC power source (housecurrent) aslong asit is
connectedto the wall outlet, evenif the setitself hasbeenturned off.
Notes
l TheAC power adaptor cansupply power evenif the battery pack is attachedto your
camcorder.
l The DC IN jack has “source priority”. This meansthat the battery pack cannot supply
any power if the power cord is connectedto the DC IN jack, evenwhen the power
cord is not plugged into a wall outlet.

UseSonyCar Battery Adaptor (optional).

Step 2 Setting the date and time
Setthe date and time settings when you useyour camcorder for the first time.
“CLOCK SET” will bedisplayed eachtime that you setthe POWERswitch to
CAMERA/MEMORY (exceptDCR-TRV240)unlessyou setthe date and time settings.
If you do not useyour camcorder for about half ayear, the date and time settings may
becleared from memory (barsmay appear) becausethe built-in rechargeablebattery
installed in your camcorder will have beendischarged (p. 196).
Setthe year, then the month, the day, the hour and then the minute.
(1) Setthe POWER switch to CAMERA or MEMORY (except DCR-TRV240), and
then press MENU to display the menu settings.
(2) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select CLOCK SETin @ZJ,then press the
dial.
(3) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust the desired year, then press the dial.
(4) Setthe month, day and hour by turning the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial and

Step 3 Inserting a cassette
We recommend using Hi8 bIiO/Digital8 E)video cassettes.
(1) Prepare the power source (p. 12).
(2) Slide OPEN/EJECT in the direction of the arrow and open the lid.
The cassettecompartment automatically lifts up and opens.
(3) Insert the cassettestraight as far as possible into the cassettecompartment with
the window facing up.
Push the center of the cassetteback to insert.
(4) Close the cassettecompartment by pressing ~PUSH~on the cassettecompartment.
The cassettecompartment automatically goes down.
(5) After the cassettecompartment going down completely, close the lid until it
clicks.

To eject a cassette
Follow the procedure above, and take out the cassettein step 3.

l Do not pressthe cassettecompartment down. Doing somay causea malfunction.
l Your camcorder records pictures in the Digital8 E3system.
l The recording time when you useyour camcorder is half of indicated time on Hi8
WB tape.If you selectthe LP mode in the menu settings,3/4 of indicated time on Hi8
HiH tape.
l If you usestandard 8R tape,besure to play back the tapeon your camcorder. Mosaic
pattern noisemay appearwhen you play backstandard 8 q tape on other camcorders
(including other DCR-TRV240/TRV340/TRV74O/TRV840).
l The cassettecompartment may not beclosedwhen you pressany part of the lid other
than the [PUSHImark.
