? Precautions
On safety
. Caution -The useof optical instruments with
this product will increaseeye hazard.
l Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet, unplug theplayer andhaveit checkedby
qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
On power sources
l The player is not disconnected from the AC
power sourceaslong asit isconnectedto thewall
outlet, even if the player itself hasbeenturned
off.
. If you arenot going to usethe player for a long
time, be sureto disconnect the player from the
wall outlet. To disconnect the AC power cord,
grasp the plug itself; never pull the cord.
l Should the AC power cord needto bechanged,
have it done at a qualified service shop only.
On placement
. Place the player in a location with adequate
ventilation to prevent heatbuild-up in the player.
. Do not place the player on a soft surface such as
arug that might block theventilation holeson the
bottom.
l Do not place the player in a location near heat
sources,or in aplace subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
l If the player is brought directly from a cold to a
warm location, or is placedin avery damp room,
moisture may condenseon the lensesinside the
player. Should this occur, the player may not
operateproperly. In this case,remove the disc
and leave the player turned on for about half an
hour until the moisture evaporates.
l When you move the player, take out any discs. If
you don’t, the disc may be damaged.
On adjusting volume
Do not turn up the volume while listening to a
section with very low level inputs or no audio
signals. If you do, the speakersmay bedamaged
when apeak level section is played.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not useany type of abrasive pad,
scouring powder or solvent such asalcohol or
benzine.
If you haveany questions or problems concerning
your player, pleaseconsult your nearestSony
dealer.
On cleaning discs
Do not useacommercially available cleaning disc.
It may causea malfunction.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Caution: This player is capable of holding a
still video imageor on-screendisplay image on
your television screenindefinitely. If you leave
the still video image or on-screendisplay
image displayed on your TV for an extended
period of time you risk permanent damageto
your television screen.Projection televisions
areespecially susceptible to this.

“DVD VIDEO” and“DVD-RW” aretrademarks
Your player hasa region code printed on the
back of the unit and only will play DVD
VIDEO discs (playback only) labeled with
identical region codes.
DVDs labeled ALL will also play on this
player.

If you try to play any other DVD, the
message“Playback prohibited by area
limitations.” will appearon the TV screen.
Depending on the DVD, no region code
indication may be labeled even though
playing the DVD is prohibited by area
restrictions.
The player cannot play the following discs:
l CD-ROMs (PHOTO CDs included)
l All CD-Rs/CD-RWs other than music and
VCD format CD-Rs/CD-RWs
l Data part of CD-Extras
l DVD-ROMs
l DVD Audio discs
Also, the player cannot play the following
l A disc recordedin acolor systemother than
NTSC, such asPAL or SECAM (This
player conforms to the NTSC color
system).
l A DVD with adifferent region code (page
86).
l A disc that hasa non-standard shape(e.g., t
card, heart).
l A disc with paper or stickers on it.

l A disc that hasthe adhesive of cellophane
tape or a sticker still left on it.
Some DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, CD-Rs, or CD-RWs
cannot be played on this player due to the recording
quality or physical condition of the disc, or the
characteristics of the recording device. DVD-RWs in
VR mode may also take time to playback due to the
recording condition.
Furthermore. the disc will not play if it has not been
correctly finalized. For more information, seethe
operating instructions for the recording device.
Someplayback operations of DVDs and
VIDEO CDs may be intentionally setby
software producers. Since this player plays
DVDs andVIDEO CDs according to thedisc
contents the software producers designed,
someplayback features may not beavailable.
Also, refer to the instructions supplied with
the DVDs or VIDEO CDs.
This product incorporates copyright

owners. Use of this copyright protection

Notesaboutthe Discs
On handling discs
l To keepthedisc clean,handle thedisc by its
edge. Do not touch the surface.
l Do not exposethe disc to direct sunlight or
heat sourcessuch ashot air ducts, or leave
it in acar parked in direct sunlight asthe
temperature may rise considerably inside
the car.
l After playing, store the disc in its case.
On cleaning
l Before playing, clean the disc with a
cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the center out.
l Do not usesolvents such asbenzine,
thinner, commercially available cleaners,or
anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.

CUSTOM Setup
In addition to the Quick Setup setting, you can
adjust the image and sound quality, and other
various settings.
RESET
Returns the settings in “SETUP” to the default
setting.
PROGRAM (page 38) Selectsthe title, chapter, or track to play adisc
in the order you want.
SHUFFLE (page 40) Plays the title, chapter, or track in random
order.
_.. REPEAT (page 41) Plays the entire disc (all titles/all tracks)
repeatedly or one title/chapter/track
repeatedly.
A-B REPEAT (page 42) Specifies the partsyou want to play repeatedly.
BNR (page 61) Adjusts the picture quality by reducing the
“block noise” or mosaic like patterns that
appearon your TV screen.
VIDEO EQUALIZER (page 62) Adjusts the video signal from the player. You
can selectthe picture quality that best suits the
program you are watching.
DIGITAL VIDEO ENHANCER Exaggeratesthe outline of the image to
) produce a sharperpicture.

QuickOverview
A quick overview presentedin this chapter will give you enough information to start using the
player for your enjoyment. To usethe surround soundfeaturesof this player, refer to “Hookups”
on page 18.
l You cannot connect this player to a TV that doesnothaveavideoinputjack.
l Be suretoturnoff thepowerofeachcomponentbeforeconnecting.
Step1:Unpacking
Check that you have the following items:
l Audio/video cord (pinplug x 3 ++ pinplug x 3) (1)
l Remote commander (remote) RMT-D 131A (1)
l Size AA (R6) batteries (2)
Step2: InsertingBatteriesintothe Remote
You can control the player using the supplied remote. Insert two size AA (R6) batteries by
matching the @ and0 endson the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using
the remote, point it at the remote sensor q on the player.
l Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place.
l Do not dropanyforeignobjectintotheremotecasing,particularlywhenreplacingthebatteries.
l Do not expose the remote sensor to direct light from the sun or a lighting apparatus. Doing so may cause a
malfunction.
l If you do not use the remote for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from
battery leakage and corrosion.

Step3: TVHookups
Connect the supplied audio/video cord and the power cord in the order (m-m) shown below.
Be sureto connect the power code last.

Depending on the disc, amenu may bedisplayed on theTV screen.If so,selectthe item you want
from the menu and play the DVD VIDEO (page 34) or VIDEO CD disc (page 37).
To stop playing
PressH.
To take out the disc
Press6.
To turn off the player
Press l/O on the remote. The player is setto standby mode and the power indicator lights up in
red. PressPOWER on the player to turn off completely.

HookingUpthe Player
Follow Steps 1to 4 to hook up and adjust the settings of the player.
Before you start, turn off the power, check that you haveall of the supplied accessories,andinsert
the batteries into the remote (page 15).
l Plug cords securely to prevent unwanted noise.
l Refer to the instructions supplied with the components to be connected.

Connect this player to your TV monitor, projector, or AV amplifier (receiver) using a video cord.
Selectoneof thepatterns@ through 0, according to theinput jack on your TV monitor, projector,
or AV amplifier (receiver).
