Preface
On May 16, 2005 Sony held an exciting press conference in Los
Angeles California. Sony ™ offered the world its first look of its next-
generation gaming system, the PlayStation 3 ™. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai
called it a “supercomputer for computer entertainment.”
The hardware of the PlayStation 3 was simply described as
“enormously powerful.” Sony's new system would be capable of
delivering video content in full high definition, at resolutions of up to
1080p(* , which is the most detailed resolution currently supported.
The Cell processor, a joint project between Sony, Toshiba, and IBM,
would be the most powerful processor ever delivered for a gaming
system, comprised of 7 separate processing units, each working
simultaneously.
The system would be backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 disc
format. The PlayStation 3 would also use Blu-ray discs for its media.
Blu-ray is a disc format that can hold almost six times as much data as
current DVDs can. Also, DVD, and CD-ROM would be supported.
The graphics chip inside the PS3 would be the most powerful chip
available on the market. Based on nVidia technology, the chip would
feature 512 MB of graphics memory, and 300 million transistors. In
comparison, the most powerful GeForce video card for PCs could not
perform even half as well.
The PS3 would also feature wireless rechargeable USB controllers,
with motion detecting technology. And the system would be capable
of downloading content from the internet via WiFi or ethernet
connection, and storing it on a 20 or 60 gig hard drive.

The demonstration of the power of the PS3 at E3, the largest gaming
convention in the world, created great anticipation for its release in
the upcoming Fall. The release of such a dramatically new and
complicated gaming system would demand updated knowledge and
understanding from the public that would soon own it.
Many questions since then have been brought up about what the PS3's
exact capabilities were, when the PS3 would be come available, how it
would integrate older PlayStation games, differences between the two
release versions, whether one could play games on a regular TV
instead of an HDTV, and much more.
Although no guide is completely comprehensive, this guide has
focused on most of the major questions that have been brought up
about the PS3 and its capabilities, as well as more specific questions
on hardware and software. Certainly, the PS3 is a great leap in gaming
innovation, and it will serve as the latest example of what future
gaming systems will be judged upon. Whether you are a dedicated

A. The PS3 is the latest console release by Sony. It is the most
technologically advanced gaming console yet. The Sony PlayStation 2
is its predecessor, and before that was the Playstation. These were
both very popular and advanced for their time. The PS3 is a computer
system capable of playing not only video games, but also DVDs, Blu-
Ray DVDs, internet access and content downloading , video chat,
digital photo viewing, digital video, audio, and much more.

: When did the system come out?
A: The system launched worldwide in Japan on November 11, 2006.
In North America the PS3 came out on November 17, 2006. Europe
and Australia/Asia must wait until March of 2007 to get the system.
. Why is there so much hype over the PS3?
A. The PS3 looks more like a real computer system than any of its
predecessors. The PS3 has similar functionality to a PC in the sense
that it can play DVDs, browse the internet, download music, video
conference, and receive external USB devices. Its hardware is at the
very top of the line even when comparing the best PCs. It is a mini
supercomputer for gaming, and its Blu-ray disc drive is very valuable.
. Why is the PS3 so expensive?
A. The PS3 should actually cost more than what it currently does. The
PS3 is somewhat more expensive than other consoles because it has so
many features that other previous consoles do not have. The
hardware used in the PS3 is more expensive than the actual cost on
the system; Sony loses an estimated 200 dollars per console sold. The
20 GB PS3 is a value when considering its hardware because many
Blu-ray DVD players right now are currently more than the $500 cost
of the 20 GB system, which comes with a Blu-ray player.

flat as it is shown on the first page of this book or stood up on its side

. What are some of the disadvantages of the PS3?
A. Real disadvantages are hard to find with a system that is so
valuable, but people have been able to come up with a few. For one,
the fact that the PS3 supports a wide variety of storage media and that
can create confusion on the best medium to store and transfer
information.
Some people think that the price is too high, but that is addressed
above. Yes the Nintendo Wii is cheaper, but it offers very little as of
now compared to the PS3, in terms of a complete multimedia
experience. If you're looking for fun family gaming and nothing else,
the Wii does the trick at a cheaper cost.
Also, some people think that Blu-ray Disc format has yet to take off as
a standard format, and that HD-DVD might end up taking over the
whole market, leaving you with a worthless DVD player. This
potential outcome, combined with the high cost of the Blu-ray DVD
player might cause Sony to halt PS3 production.
. Which Console is better? The PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo
Wii?
A. Better depends on what you're looking for. If you want the most
advanced hardware, then go for the PS3. If you're a Nintendo fan, and
enjoy their own gaming line with games like Mario and Zelda, you
should get the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 offers a great
combination of price to performance as well. It all depends on what
you are looking for in a system, and whether that system supports the
particular games that you want to play. Just know that no other
system on the market is as versatile in hardware than the PS3. If you
have a game preference that can only be found on Nintendo of Xbox

A. Yes, the PS3 will offer unlimited multiplayer internet gameplay for
the games that support it. The only exception will be MMORPGs. You
have to also pay to download content specific to the PS3, but not for
content that you could normally download for free with your PC.

A. The 20GB HDD version has no WiFi, or memory card reader. This
version is $499.99. The 60GB HDD Version has WiFi and memory
card reading capability and will sell for $599.99. In US, $499US and
$599US. In Canada $549CDN and $659CDN. In Europe 499EUR and
599EUR.
. How much does the PS3 cost to make?
A. The production cost is estimated to be US$805.85 for the 20GB
model and US$840.35 for the 60GB model.
. What will come with the package?

A. The packaging for both versions will contain:

A. The Memory Card adapter for transferring PS1/PS2 saves to the
PlayStation 3 will sell for $14.99. SIXAXIS controllers can be
purchased for $49.99. You can buy the remote made to play Blu-ray
media for $24.99

WalMart, BestBuy, Kmart, Target, Costco, Fry's, Blockbuster, KBToys,

. When will the PS3 be available at retail price?
A. Actually, at this point in time, E-Bay sellers have flooded the
market with PS3s, and many are losing money, unlike at the beginning
when one could make 500-600 dollars on a PS3. Now is a good time
to look for PS3s on E-Bay, but don't expect this trend to continue.
When new PS3 games start to be released, and another wave of
shipments comes in from Sony, more people will start buying and
demand will shoot up again.
The PS3's availability will be scarce for a while at brick and mortar
stores. And, B&M (brick and mortar store availability depends on
your location and other factors. Sony has released news that it was
very disappointed with its product availability at launch and is looking
to increase production in the next 6 months, so just be patient until
you can find a PS3 at retail price, and call up every local EBGames,
Walmart, Target, etc. to find out when they will be getting their
specific shipments in and whether you can get on some kind of wait
list.
. Where/How should I buy a PS3 online?
A. The best place to find a good PS3 deal currently is E-Bay. Look for
inexperienced E-Bay sellers who are trustworthy. A good way to tell is
by their feedback and items they have previously sold before. If their
feedback is pretty well established (above 20 and they have no

complaints, then they are probably just someone looking to make a
few extra bucks, and won't rip you off.
Look for 20 GB versions, because those versions more often sell closer
to retail value than the 60 GB versions.
Also, sign up for E-Bay so you can search completed listings. To
search completed listings, or auctions that have ended already, click
on the “completed listings” option. You can't use this option unless
you are registered. But, with this option, you can see what price
different sellers have sold their PS3s for, and find a seller that is
selling one closer to retail value. Sometimes, you'll find a PS3
cheaper! At this point in time PS3s have flooded the E-Bay market,
but no one knows whether this trend will change on E-Bay, so I would
recommend getting one now if you can find a good deal. Also, never
bid much higher than the retail price for each version. And make sure
the seller is not ripping you off in shipping.

A. USB stands for universal serial bus. This is simply an input that is
designed to communicate with a variety of hardware devices such as
cameras, hard drives, wireless devices, controllers, and more. The
input is used to communicate between the PS3 and external hardware
that might connect to it. The PS3 has 4 USB inputs on the system to

attach a large number of devices, and this number can be expanded
even more using adapters.
. What is HD or High Definition?
A. High Definition is that latest innovation in the technology used to
display images on television. There are more pixels on the screen, or
dots, which allows clearer and more detailed images. The more dots
used in an image, the more contours and fine detail one can see. In
order to be able to use this technology, you need an HDTV, HD Ready
TV, or monitor.
. How powerful is the PS3 compared to other systems?
A. The PS3 is twice as powerful as the Xbox 360 and 35 times more
powerful then the PS2. It is also much more powerful than the Wii.
. What are the differences between the 20 GB and 60 GB
versions of the PS3?
A. The 20 GB Version and 60 GB Versions are EXACTLY the same
EXCEPT for the following 3 features:
1. Hard drive space. The 60 GB Version has 40 gigs more space
and will be able to hold more content.
2. Wireless capability. The 60 GB version is capable of supporting
wireless internet, while the 20 GB version is not.
3. The 60GB system include inputs for Memory Stick, SD and
Compact Flash cards. These cards are inserted through a flip-up
door on the front. These are memory cards typically used in
cameras, and with this input you'll be able to transfer images
straight from your digital camera to your PS3.

GB version for 100 dollars more?
A. The 20 GB version of the PS3 is capable of supporting wireless
through a USB adapter purchased separately, and the hard drive can

A. Yes, there are external adapters that you can buy on the market that
will allow your PS3 to read memory cards. They should connect to
