SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following
safety checks before releasing the set to the customer:
1, Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or
poorly-soldered connections, Check the entire
board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no
wires are “pinched” or contact high-wattage
resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, par-
ticularly transistors, that were installed during a
previous repair. Point them out to the customer
and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for parts which, though functioning, show
obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out
to the customer and recommend their replace-
ment.
5. Check the line cord for cracks and abrasion.
Recommend the replacement of any such line
cord to the customer.
6, Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values
specified,
7. Check the antenna terminals, metal trim,
“metallized” knobs, screws, and all other
exposed metal parts for AC leakage. Check
leakage as described below.

LEAKAGE TEST
The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to
earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to any
exposed metal part having a return to chassis, must
not exceed 0.S5mA (500 microampers). Leakage
current can be measured by any one of three
methods.
A commercial leakage tester, such as the
Simpson 229 or RCA WT-S40A. Follow the
manufacturers’ instructions to use these instru-
ments.
A battery-operated AC milliammeter, The Data
Precision 245 digital multimeter is suitable for
this job.
Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by
means of a VOM or battery-operated AC volt-
meter. The “limit” indication is 0.75 V, so
analog meters must have an accurate low-
voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa
SH-63Trd are examples of a passive VOM that
is suitable. Nearly al] battery operated digital
multimeters that have.a 2V AC range are
suitable. (See Fig. A)

TO SELECT CATV CHANNELS
In addition to normal broadcast reception of VHF channels 2-13
and UHF channels 14 - 83, this recorder receives CATV channels.
To get the desired CATV channel, set the NORMALICATV selector
to CATY, refer to the following chart and select the corresponding
number on this recorder.

Most CATV systems use letters to designate channels but some
use numbers. To tune In a numbered channel, select the same
number on the recorder.
Not all CATV channels fisted will be active on your particular
system. Check with your focal cable TV company or your nearest
Sony dealer for more comptete information on the available chan-
nels and the type of cable system.
4-6. PROGRAMMABLE ANTENNA SWITCH
You can preset this video cassette recorder to switch from direct
reception from the RF IN ANTIGABLE terminal to reception looped
through an optional captions decoder by using the AUX button on
the front control panel or on your Remote Commander.

Automatic pause release
To protect the video heads and the tape, the pause mode will be
automatically released after about 8 minutes and recording will
resume.
Automatic rewind function
‘If the tape reaches the end during recording, the tape will be re-
wound to the beginning automatically.
In case you want to record a tape which is to be played back
on another recorder from the very beginning of the tape, run
the tape for about 15 seconds before starting recording.
Otherwise you may miss the starting point during playback
‘on the other machine.
RECORDING ONE TV PROGRAM WHILE VIEWING
ANOTHER

1 Start recording the desired TV program following the pro-

'2 Press the PROGRAM SELECT button so that the VTR

3 Select the channel you want to view on the TV.

BETA HI-FI switch
What is BETA HI-FI recording?
In conventional recording, audio signals are recorded on the audio
track and the video signals on the video track. On Beta hi-fi record:
ing, audio signals are recorded on the video track together with the
video signais using the 2 rotary video heads.
The Beta hi-fi audio signals are frequency-modulated and recorded
in 2 channets, so that you can record a stereo or bilingual program
with superior sound quality to that of the conventional audio
recording.

How the SL-2710 works
At all times, the audio signal is recorded longitudinally on the con-
ventional audio track in monaural, so that the tapes can be played
back on any ordinary video cassette recorder without a Beta hi-fi
system.
When the BETA HI-FI switch is ON, this recorder records audio
signals on video track (Beta hi-fi recording) and on the conventional
audio track at the same time.

1-9, FM SIMULCAST RECORDING
By connecting an FM stereo tuner to the AUDIO LINE IN jacks
besides the CATV cable connection, you can record a CATV pro-
gram with stereo sound, such as MTV (music TV}, whose audio
signals are divided into the FM tuner from the cabie.

select the playback sound with the audio track select switch and
the Beta hii select switch,

When the tapes recorded on other video cassette recorder without a”
Beta hi-fi system are played back, the conventional audio track is
automatically selected regardiess of the switch position.
Set to the proper position to get the desired sound, when the audio
track seiect switch is set to BETA HEFI or MIX.
Playback of Beta hi-fl stereo sound programs
Set to STEREO.
When the recorder is connected to a Component TV, a stereo
system or..stereo’ headphones, you can enjoy stereo ‘sound
reproduction.”
When.a conventional (monaural) TV is connected, the sound of the
left and right channels are mixed so that monaural sound comes
from the TV speake!

1-12. TIMER-ACTIVATED RECORDING
The bullt-in timer permits automatic recroding of up to nine pre-
selected programs, even when you are not at home. The timer can
be set to operate anytime until the 3rd or (if the day of presetting is
Saturday) the 2nd Saturday from the day you preset the programs.

You can select the channel to be recorded

ACTIVATED, except for checking the timer
setting. This is to safeguard the timer
recording.

Be sure to press the TIMER REC button again.

TO CHECK THE TIMER SETTING
Press the TIMER CHECK button, Each time you press the button,
the indication will change as follows :

The indicator of the channel preset for the recording will light up at
the same time the turn-on time of each program is displayed, so
that the channel can be checked. During timer recording, however,
the channel for other timer programs cannot be checked.
* To obtain a present time during the checking procedure, turn the Unit off:
TO CLEAR THE TIMER SETTING
‘The memory of a timer program will be automatically erased when
the recording of that program is finished. A setting for everyday will
~ not Be erased, of course.
Ifyou: want-to skip the timer recording preset for everyday tem-
porarily, préss the TIMER REC button so that the TIMER REC lamp
goes off. To resume the timer standby mode of that program, press
the button again...
