FUEL AND LUBRICATION
• FUEL
Use unleaded petrol of normal quality, mixed with 40:1, a
specific 2-stroke engine oil. Use the mixture ratios detailed
in the Table of Fuel Mixture Ratios below.
WARNING: Never use pure petrol in your equipment. This
would cause long term damage to the machine and the
manufacturer’s guarantee for this product would be void.
Never use a petrol-oil mix that has been stored for more
than 90 days
WARNING: If a 2-stroke oil is used, this must be a first
class oil which is suitable for air cooled 2-stroke engines,
mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Do not use any other 2-stroke oil
product with a recommended mixture ratio of 100:1. If
insufficient oil is revealed to be the cause of engine damage,
the engine manufacturer’s guarantee will be void in this
case
.
t occurrence.
• FUEL MIX
Mix the fuel with a 2-stroke oil, in a suitable container. Use
the mixing table to achieve the right ratio of fuel to oil.
Shake the container to ensure that it is well mixed.
WARNING: The use of the wrong oil will void the
manufacturer’s guarantee.
• FUEL AND OIL

1 US Gal. 3.2 oz 95 ml (cc)
5 litres 4.3 oz 125 ml (cc)
1 Imp. Gal. 4.3 oz 125 ml (cc)
Mixing process 40 parts petrol to 1 part oil
1 ml = 1 cc
• RECOMMENDED FUELS
A number of ordinary petrol types are mixed with additives
such as alcohol and ether in order to meet air purity
regulations. Your Talon machine has been developed to run
satisfactorily on any petrol, including these types of petrol.
INSTRUCTIONS
• STARTING WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD
Fill the fuel tank with an appropriate fuel-oil mixture. See
also Fuel and Oil above. Place the machine on the ground
and pull out the starting aid bracket.
1. Place the hedge trimmer on a firm and flat surface.
2. Place your left foot on the bracket and stand behind the
rear handle of the trimmer. Pull on the starting cord with
your right hand.
3. Move the ignition switch to the “Run(!)” position (Fig. 3A).
4. The choke on your hedge trimmer has two positions,
CLOSE”[–]” and OPEN “[ | ]”. Move the choke lever (A)
to the CLOSE “[–]” position (Fig. 3B).
5. Prepare the carburettor. Pump the intake primer (B) 10
times (Fig. 3C).
6. Hold the handle securely – press the throttle cut-off (C)
and the throttle (D) until it locks (Fig. 5E) (Fig. 3D).
7. Pull the starting cord out a little until you meet resistance
(about 4”) (Fig. 3E). A gentle, rapid tug is required to
generate a strong spark. Pull the starting cord quickly
four times.
8. Once the engine has started, leave it running for around
10 seconds.
9. Move the choke lever to the OPEN “[ | ]” position (Fig.
3F).
10.If the engine does not start, repeat steps 1 to 8
NOTE: If engine fails to start after repeated attempts, refer
to Troubleshooting section.
NOTE: Always pull the starting cord straight out. If you pull
the cord out at an angle, the cord will rub on the connecting
eye. This friction will mean that the line will wear out more
quickly. Always hold the starting hand grip firmly when
pulling the cord. Do not allow the cord to snap back from its
pulled out position. This leads to faster wear on the cord
and damage to the starting components.

• STARTING WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM
(The machine has been stopped for no more than 15 –
20 minutes)
1. Pull the starting cord out again. The engine should start
after ONE or TWO pulls. If the engine still does not start
after 6 pulls, repeat steps 2 to 8 above.
2. If the engine does not start after 5 pulls, or starts and then
stops, follow the steps for “Starting when the engine is
cold”.
TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONS
• ADDITIONAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Before starting work with this equipment, take a look at all
the SAFETY PRECAUTIONS in these instructions
WARNING / CAUTION
• IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH TRIMMING
TECHNIQUES, try it out with the machine turned “OFF”.
• ENSURE THAT YOUR WORK AREA IS CLEAR of any
items such as cans, bottles, stones, etc. Items struck with
the trimmer can cause serious injury to the user or
bystanders and damage the equipment. If an item is
unintentionally struck, switch the MACHINE OFF
IMMEDIATELY and check the equipment. Never work
with damaged or broken equipment.
• ALWAYS TRIM OR CUT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING
AT HIGH SPEED. Do not allow the engine to run slowly
while starting or trimming.
• DO NOT USE the equipment for any purpose other than
trimming and weeding.
• DO NOT USE THE EQUIPMENT if other people or
animals are nearby. Maintain a minimum distance of 50
feet (15 metres) between the user and other people and
animals during trimming or weeding. Allow a distance of
100 feet (30 metres) between the user and other people
and animals when cutting grass with the blade
1. WORK AREA. Ensure that you always have a good grip
and balance and do not overstrain yourself. When using
the trimmer, wear safety spectacles, non-slip footwear
and protective work gloves. Hold the machine firmly in
both hands and then switch the trimmer ON. Always hold
the trimmer as shown in the pictures, with one hand on
the front handle and one on the rear handle. Never hold
the trimmer by the blade guard.
2. TRIMMING DENSE GROWTH. The most effective
method is to use a broad movement, cutting through the
vegetation, moving the blades directly through the stems.
Slightly inclining the blade downwards in the direction of
movement gives the best cut. (Fig. 4A)
3. TRIMMING HEDGE TOPS. To achieve the best and
most perfect result, a string can be run along the length
of the hedge as a guide.
CAUTION: Do not use the trimmer to cut branches
thicker than 25 mm. Only use the trimmer to cut shrubs
found around the house and buildings.
4. TRIMMING HEDGE SIDES. Hold the trimmer as shown
in Fig. 4B and start to run it up the hedge from bottom to
top.

MAINTENANCE
Always switch the trimmer off. Ensure that your trimmer is
always well lubricated.
1. The blade is made of high quality, hardened steel and
with normal use it should not be necessary to sharpen the
blades. However, if you do strike barbed wire, stone,
glass or any other hard object, this could cause a nick in
the blade. It is not essential to remove the nick, provided
that this does not affect the function of the blade. If it
appears to be affecting the movement, turn the machine
off and use a fine file or a fine grinding stone to remove
the notch.
2. If you drop the trimmer, check whether any damage has
been caused. If the blade is bent or the casing or handles
are broken, or if you notice anything else which could
affect the operation of the trimmer, contact an authorised
customer service centre to get it repaired before you use
it again.
3. Fertilisers and other garden chemical products contain
substances which significantly accelerate metal corrosion.
Do not store the machine on or near to fertilisers or other
chemicals.
4. With the machine switched off, please use only mild soap
and a damp cloth to clean it. Never allow liquid to
penetrate into the machine; never immerse any part of the
machine in liquid.
• OILING THE BLADE
WARNING: Before you start to oil the blade, ensure that
the machine is switched off and has come to a complete
stop.
To ensure easy operation and longer blade life, oil the blade
before and after every use. Use a light engine oil along the
points of the blade. (Fig. 5).
• AIR FILTER
CAUTION: NEVER use the machine without the air filter
fitted, or dust and dirt will be sucked into the engine and
will cause damage.
Cleaning the air filter
1. Press button (A) and hold the cover in position, remove
the cover (B) and air filter (C) from the air filter housing
(Fig. 6).
2. Wash the filter with soap and water. DO NOT USE
PETROL!
3. Allow the filter to air dry.
4. Reassemble the filter.
Note: Replace the filter if it is worn out, greasy, damaged or
cannot be repaired.
• SETTING THE CARBURETOR
The carburettor is set up for the best performance by the
manufacturer. If further adjustments are necessary, take
your machine to your nearest customer service centre.
• SPARK PLUGS
1. Spark plug spark gap = 0.025 inches (0.635 mm) (Fig. 7)
2. Torque to 12 to 15 Nm.
Fit the spark plug cover.
• STORING THE MACHINE
WARNING: Errors in following these instructions may
cause a crust to form on the inside of the carburettor
which may lead to starting difficulties or long term
damage in storage.
1. Carry out the general maintenance work detailed in the
Maintenance section of these instructions.
2. Clean the outer casing of the machine.
3. Drain the fuel from the tank.
4. Once the fuel has drained out, start the engine.
5. Leave the engine ticking over until it stops on its own.
This draws all the fuel out of the carburettor.
6. Leave the machine to cool down (approx. 5 minutes).
7. Using a spark plug spanner, remove the spark plug.
8. Pour a teaspoon of 2-stroke oil into the combustion
chamber (Fig. 9). Carefully pull the starting cord slowly
out a few times to lubricate the internal components.
Replace the spark plug.
9. Keep the machine in a cool, dry place, away from any
sources of ignition such as oil heaters or boilers, etc.
• STARTING AFTER STORAGE
1. Remove the spark plug.
2. Pull the starting cord out quickly to expel any oil residue
from the combustion chamber.
3. Clean the spark plug electrodes or fit a spark plug with
new spark electrodes.
4. Prepare the machine for use.
5. Fill the tank with an appropriate fuel-oil mix. See also
the Fuel and Oil section above.
