1.Introduction
TheSPEEDWATCHwirelessspeedcomputerisahighly
accuratemeanstomeasurespeedthroughwaterofany
low‐speedwatercraftsuchasasailboat,yacht,kayakor
smallpoweredboats.Designedfortheseriousracerand
theadvancedusers,theSPEEDWATCHgivesvaluable
feedbackontheperformanceofyourwatercraft.
Thesmallimpellerisplacedunderthecraft,inavariety
ofmountingpossibilities.Whenyourboatorkayakis
movingthroughthewater,theimpellerrotatescreating
amagneticfieldthatpenetratesthroughhullwithout
wires.Thismagneticfieldisreceivedbythesensitive
sensorattheendofacableonthetransmitter,whichis
placedwithin30cmfromtheimpeller.Thetransmitter
thensendsoutalow‐frequencyradiosignalthatis
receivedbythedisplayupto5meters.Thesignalis
processedanddisplayedasinstantspeed.
TheSPEEDWATCHusesthisspeedsignaltocalculatethe
instant,balanced,andmaximumspeedaswellasthe
tripandtotaldistance.TheSPEEDWATCHoutperforms
anyGPSwithregardstoprecisespeedanddistance
measurement,allowingforminutechangesin
performancetoberegisteredandadjusted.The
SPEEDWATCHbecomesaninvaluabletoolwhensailing
orrowingincurrents,asitmeasurestruespeedthrough
water,ratherthanaveragespeedoverlandlikeaGPS.
Themagnetizedimpellerrequiresnopowersource,the
transmitterusesa9Vbattery,andthedisplayincludesa
long‐lifeLithiumbattery,goodforhundredsofhoursof
use.

3.Startingupthe
Instrument
Display
Fromthefactory,theSPEEDWATCHisinalowpower
state,withthetime“12:00”flashing.Pressanybutton
toenternormalmode.
TheSPEEDWATCHisnowinManualMode;itwillonly
receivedatafromthetransmitterwhenthe
CHRONObuttonispressedandtheimpelleris
rotating.ThedefaultspeedisKNOTS,whichcanbe
changedtomph,km/h,orm/s.
Impeller
TheSPEEDWATCHimpellerneedstobescrewedonto
eitherthewhitefinmount,thelargeblackfinor
rudderblackfinmount.Theimpellerismagnetized
andcreatesamagneticpulsewhenrotating.This
magneticpulseisreceivedbythetransmitterand
transmittedtothedisplay.Thedisplaycannotsense
theimpellerdirectly;thetransmittermustbeon.

Transmitter
TheSPEEDWATCHTransmitterrequiresa9Vbattery
tooperate;thisisincludedinyoursystem.Toinstall
thebattery,gentlypullthecapexposingthebattery
compartment.Installthe9Vbatteryandreplacethe
batterycap.Besuretopressthecapbackonfullyto
formthewatertightseal.Failuretodothiscould
resultinthe9Vbatteryfailing.Theelectronicsinthe
SPEEDWATCHtransmitterarecompletelyfactory
sealed.Donotattempttoopenthecaseexposingthe
electronics,orfailurecanoccur.
Itisnotnecessarytoremovethebatteryexceptfor
longperiod(wi nterstorage)becausethepower
consumptionisverylowifnomagneticfieldis
received.
Redflashesappearsonthebottomsidewhenthe
transmitterreceivesthemagneticsignalfromthe
impeller.

4.Programmingthe
SPEEDWATCH
Entertheprogrammingmodetosetthe:

Toentertheprogrammingmode,youmustbein
eitherMANUALchronometermodewiththetimer
stopped,orinautomaticandnotreadinganysignal
(thetimerwillbestopped).
PressandholdboththeSPEEDandCHRONObuttons
forthreesecondstoentertheprogrammingmode.
“chrono”and“man”(manual)or“auto”(automatic)
willflash.PresstheCHRONOorDISTANCEbuttonsto
changethesetting,andtheSPEEDbuttontoconfirm
settingandadvancetothenextitem.Pressandhold
theSPEEDandCHRONObuttonsforthreesecondsto
acceptallsettingsandreturntothenormaloperating
mode.
CHRONOMETER–MANUALORAUTOMATIC
PresstheCHRONOorDISTANCEbuttonstoalternate
betweenmanualorautomaticchronometer.Pressthe
SPEEDbuttontoconfirmsettingandadvance.
COUNTDOWNTIMER
PresstheCHRONOorDISTANCEbuttonstoselectthe
countdowntimer.Thiscanbesetto10,6,5,3,or1
minutes.PresstheSPEEDbuttontoconfirmsetting
andadvance. If the countdowntimer is changed, the
SPEEDWATCH will enter the countdown mode upon
exiting the programming mode.

SPEEDUNIT
PresstheCHRONOorDISTANCEbuttonstoselectthe
speedunit.Thiscanbesettokm/h(kilometresper
hour),m/s(meterspersecond),knots,ormph(miles
perhour).PresstheSPEEDbuttontoconfirmsetting
andadvance.
TIMESETTING
PresstheCHRONObuttontoadvancethetime,and
theDISTANCEbuttontomovethetimeback.Press
andholdthebuttontochangethetimefaster.Itwill
startminutebyminuteforthefirsttenminute
change,theneverytenminutesforthenexthour
change,andtheneveryhour.ThetimeisinAM/PM
mode.PresstheSPEEDbuttontoconfirmsettingand
advance.
BALANCEDSPEED
Thebalancedspeedsettingaveragestheinstantspeed
overtheselectedtimeperiodtoprovideabalanced
speedreading.Thiscanbesetfrom2secondsto60
seconds,withvaryingintervals(2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,
15,20,30,or60seconds).PresstheCHRONObutton
toincreasethetime,andtheDISTANCEtodecrease
thetime.PresstheSPEEDbuttontoconfirmsetting
andadvance.
CALIBRATIONOFSPEEDSENSOR
TheSPEEDWATCHcanbeprogrammedtoaccepta
differentspeedimpeller,forexamplea“paddle‐
wheel”stylesensor.
ThecalibrationfortheSPEEDWATCHimpelleris40.0.
Theminimumvalueis10.0,themaximumvalueis
2000.Holdingthebuttonwillincreaseordecreasethis
faster.ForsensorsotherthantheSPEEDWATCH
sensor,pleasecontactJDCElectronicforan
approximatesettingyoushoulduse.PresstheSPEED
buttontoconfirmsettingandadvance.
TheprogrammingoftheSPEEDWATCHisnow
complete.PressandholdboththeSPEEDand
CHRONObuttonsforthreesecondstoconfirmall
settingsandenternormaloperatingmode.

5.BasicOperatingMode
General Use of Buttons
LIGHTButton:Turnsonthebacklightforfiveseconds
(whileinanymode)
SPEEDButton:Selectsthespeeddisplayedinlarge
digits:instant,balanced,maximum,ortripaverage
DISTANCEButton:Selectsthedistancedisplayed:trip
ortotal
CHRONOButton:Startsandstopsthechronometer
andspeedreading.Alsostartsandpausesthe
countdowntimer.
Measuring Speed and Distance
TheSPEEDWATCHmeasurestheactualspeedthrough
water,notspeedoverlandaswithaGPS.Thesmall
impellerismountedundertheboatorkayakand
generatesamagneticfieldwhenrotating.This
magneticfieldisreceivedbythetransmitterthrough
thehullwithnowires,upto30centimeter.The
transmittersendsoutalowfrequencyradiosignal
whichisreceivedupto5meterbythedisplay.To
properlyreadspeeddata,theimpellerand
transmittershouldbemountedproperly.Pleasesee
theINSTALLATIONsectionfordetailedinstructions.
Therearetwomodesformeasuringspeedthrough
thewater,MANUALorAUTOMATIC.InMANUAL
mode,thetimerisstartedandstoppedbypressing
theCHRONObutton.Speedisonlymeasuredand
registeredwhenthetimerisON.InAUTOMATIC
mode,thetimerstartswhenasignalisreceivedfrom
thetransmitter.
ToresettheTRIPdistanceandchronometer,pressthe
CHRONObuttoninmanualmodetopausethe
chronometer.ThenpressandholdtheDISTANCE
button.ToresettheTOTdistance,pressandholdthe
DISTANCE button.

Countdown Timer
TheSPEEDWATCHcanbesettoprovideacountdown
timerforthestartofraces. To enter the programming
mode, you must be in either MANUAL chronometer mode
withthe timer stopped, or in automatic and not reading
any signal (the timer will be stopped).Pressandholdboth
theSPEEDandCHRONObuttonsforthreesecondsto
entertheprogrammingmode.PresstheSPEEDbutton
toadvancetothetimersetting.PresstheCHRONOor
DISTANCEbuttonstoselectthecountdowntimer.This
canbesetto10,6,5,3,or1minutes.
PresstheSPEEDandCHRONObuttonsforthree
secondstoexittheprogrammingmode.Thetimeis
displayedatthetopoftheLCD,thecountdowntimer
isdisplayedinthemiddle.
PresstheCHRONObuttontostartthecountdown
timer.Allotherbuttonsaredisabled,exceptforthe
LIGHTbutton.PresstheCHRONObuttontopausethe
countdown.Thetimerwillcountdown,withasingle
beepateachminute.Atoneminuteleft,adouble
beepwillsoundeachtenseconds.Attenseconds,the
SPEEDWATCHwillbeepthreetimeseachseconduntil
0:00.At0:00thesignalwillsoundfortwofullseconds.
Whenthecountdowntimerreaches0:00,the
SPEEDWATCHwillenterthenormaloperatingmode,
measuringspeedanddistance.Thechronometeris
resettoMANUAL,andcanbepausedbypressingthe
CHRONObutton.Tocancelthecountdowntimer,
presstheCHRONObuttontopausethecountdown.
ThenpressandholdtheSPEEDandCHRONObuttons
forthreesecondstoentertheprogrammingmode.Do
notchangethetimersetting;exittheprogramming
modebypressingandholdingtheSPEEDandCHRONO
buttonsforthreeseconds.

6.Mountingthe
SEEDWATCH
TheSPEEDWATCHistheultimateinflexibilityin
mounting.Theimpellerismountedundertheboat,
withseveraloptions.Thetransmitterismountedon
theinsideofthehull,withthepickupreceiverwithin
30centimeteroftheimpeller.Thedisplaycanthenbe
placedanywhereintheboatwithin5meterofthe
transmitter.Aplasticmountingbracketisattachedto
thedisplayandcanbemountedtoaflatsurface,or
theVelcrostrapusedtowraparoundamastorleg.
Thetransmitterneedstobefixedtoavoidmovement,
butthedisplaycanbemovedwhilereceivingdata.

avoidturbulence.

Orientation of impeller, transmitter

Tohavemaximumdistancebetweentheimpellerand
thetransmitterwerecommendthatthetransmitteris
perpendicularpositionwiththeimpellerasshownin
thepicturebelow.Thepositionbetweenthe
transmitterandthedisplayisalsomaximumifthe
displayisperpendiculartothetransmitter.
Threemountingsystemsareincludedinthe
SPEEDWATCHkit;aremovablefinmount,alargefin
tobefixedonthekeelbacksideandaruddermount.
Theruddermounthasablackclipthatrestsonthe
edgeoftherudder,thestripsofadhesivearethen
wrappedaroundtheclipandsecuresittotherudder.
Theimpellerisscrewedontotheend.
Thelargebladefintobefixedonthekeelbackside
caneitherbeattachedwithVHBadhesivetapeorby
screws.Thecotterpincanbemovedtoadjustthe
movementofthefintoallowtheimpellertobeoutof
thewater.
Thewhitefinmounthasabaseplatethatisattached
tothehull,eitherwiththeVHBadhesivetapeorby
screws.Thefincanthenbeinsertedandremovedto
storetheimpellerwhilenotinuse.Theimpelleris
screwedontotheend.

Thoroughlycleanthesurfacebeforemountingwith
adhesive,andwait24hoursbeforesubmersionfor
bestadhesion.

7.Calibrationofthe
SpeedSensor
ThisoperationallowstheSPEEDWATCHtobefine‐
tunedforexceptionalaccuracies.Thisisnormallynot
needed.HowevertheSPEEDWATCHcanbecalibrated
tomatchanexistingspeedsensortoaccurately
measurespeed.
Calibrationiscarriedoutfromtheprogramming
mode.PressandholdboththeSPEEDandCHRONO
buttonsforthreesecondstoentertheprogramming
mode.“chrono”and“man”(manual)or“auto”
(automatic)willflash.PresstheSPEEDbuttonfive
timestoadvancetothecalibrationmode.Theproper
calibrationis40.0fortheSPEEDWATCHimpeller.To
adjusttheSPEEDWATCH,increasethisnumber
(CHRONObutton)todecreasethespeedreading.
Decreasethisnumber(DISTANCEbutton)toincrease
thespeedreadingfortheSPEEDWATCH.The
displayednumbercorrespondstothedistanceinmm
donebyoneturnoftheimpellerorthecircumference
ofthewheel.
PressandholdtheSPEEDandCHRONObuttonsfor
threesecondstoacceptallsettingsandreturntothe
normaloperatingmode.

8.Technical
Specifications
IMPELLERTRANSMISSION
Theimpellers,mountedonsyntheticsapphire
bearings,areequippedwithpowerfulmagnetsthat
generatemagneticimpulses.Theseimpulsesare
collectedbycoils(alsocalled"Sensor")andtreated
electronicallytobedisplayedspeedsonaLCD,as
speeds.Themagneticimpulsescangothroughany
materials:fiberglass,carbonfiber,aramidfiber,wood,
plastic,aluminium,stainlesssteel,etc...Thisiswhy
youdonotneedtopierceyourhull.Thisverysensitive
systemmaydisplayavaluenearanelectricengine,a
computeroranelectriclight,eveniftheimpelleris
notturning.Thisisnormalanddoesnotaffectthe
readingswhentheimpelleristurning.Thisoriginal
andpatentedtransmissionprocessisthepropertyof
JDCELECTRONICS.A.
TRANSMITTERRANGE
TheSPEEDWATCHtransmitteroperatesonalow
frequency(8Khz)wirelesstransmissiontothedisplay.
Multipledisplaysmaybeusedononetransmitter.The
rangeistunedtoprovidemaximumdistanceina
watercraft,yetnotcauseanyinterferencewithother
nearbysystems.
ACCURACY
TestsweremadeattheBremenUniversity(Germany)
inhydrauliccanals.Resultsclearlyshowedthatthe
SPEEDWATCHisintheL.D.A.(LaserDoppler
Anemometry)accuracyrangeof3%.
SPINOUT
Allwatertestsweremadeinrealsituationwithhigh
speedwindsurfs(morethan30knots)showedthat
therewasnoturbulenceduetotheTattachmentthat
wouldtakedownthefin.Informationtransmittedby
majorEuropeanwindsurfmanufacturers
TRAIL
Theimpellertrailis40gramsat10knots.
Measurementsweremadeinhydrauliccanalsunder
thecareoftheBremenUniversityinGermany.

9.LimitedWarranty
JDCELECTRONICSAextendsa12months’warrantyoverpartsandlabourforthisinstrument,effectivefromthedateof
purchase.JDCELECTRONICSAreservestherighttorepairorreplaceanycomponentwhichmayhavebecomefaultyin
thecourseofnormaluse.Thisrepairorreplacementshallbecarriedoutatnochargetothecustomer(partsorlabour).
Transportcostshowevershallbebornebythecustomer.Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverdamagescausedbyanaccident,
abnormalorexcessiveuse,orresultingfromanunauthorisedmodificationorrepair.
