Strainer System 5–“SmartSecondaryStrainer”
`
DescriptionofSmartSecondaryStrainer:
The baseof strainerbasket SB85Mhouses astrong samarium-cobalt magnet. Whenthe basket isinplaceit
draws up the strainerplate(whichismade fromferritic stainless steel)therebyrendering itinoperative–itis
as ifthereisno secondary strainer. Any solids smallenough topass through the basket cannot therefore
accumulatewithinthe unit. Whenthe basketis removed the strainerplatedropsintoplace, providing avery
solid, tamper-resistant secondary strainer. Theplatecontains verysmall perforations (1.5mmØ), thereby
preventingvirtually any solids fromenteringthewaterway. But the holes aresufficiently numerous toprevent
the systemfromcompletelyblocking. The strainerplatecannotbe bypassed byhand.
Special Maintenance Instructions
If the strainerplategetssticky thenthereis aslight chancethatit willnotopen when the basket isreinserted
aftercleaning. This risk canbe eliminated ifthe basketis flushed every daywith1litreof hot soapy water.
This willensurethat sticky residues, greaseetc cannot accumulateon themechanism.

E.Installation Requirements
(i).When casting entire assemblyintonew concreteslab –all systems
(one-stageinstallation, no height-adjustmentrequired)
1.Connect unit tothe pipebyappropriatemeans(depending upon the specific
arrestorand thepipematerialinvolved. Alwayscheckthat the secondarystraineris
present and correctlyinstalled.
2.Ensureunit isadequatelysecured tothe reinforcingsteel toprevent displacement
duringconcretepour.
3.Ensureunit isset up tothe appropriateheight, having regardingtothe anytopping
tobe appliedtothe slab.
4.Ensurethat grateisprotected duringconcretepour, forexamplebycoveringwith
duct tape. The tape should betrimmedtoupperedge of gratetoensurethat when
removed, the cement surrounding the grateisnot damaged.
(ii).When casting intonew concreteslab –heightadjustablesystems
(two-stageinstallation possiblyinvolvingwaterproofing ofslab)
1.Connect lowerbodytothe pipe byappropriatemeans, depending upon the pipe
material involved.
2.Ensurelowerbodyisadequatelysecured tothe reinforcing steeltoprevent it being
displacedduring concretepour.
3.Ensurelowerbodyisset up tothe appropriateheight having regardtothe likely
depthof the topping, the type of waterproofingmembrane beingusedand thesize
of the grateassemblybeing installed.
4.[If applicable] the waterproofingmembrane shouldbe applied asfaraspossible into
the lowerbodybut without obstructingthe weep holesorthe female thread.
5.Priortoinsertionof grateassembly, doublecheckthat secondarystraineris
installed inlowerbody. Do not insert the basket intothe lowerbody!
6.Screw the grateassemblyintolowerbodytosuit height of finishedfloor.

7.[If applicable] sheet vinylflooring should be applied intothe grateassemblyand
clampedsecurelywithclamping ring(vinylflooring tobeinstalled byqualified
professional).
8.Insert basket intograteassemblyand re-securegrate.
(iii).CompactorPush-in systems (includingSmartSecondary Strainer system)
1.Insert assemblyintopipeusingo-ringstosuit pipe material (consult SPS for
appropriateo-ringwhenordering). If waterproofingisrequired, aleakcontrol flange
must be installed intopipepriortothe grateassembly. Inthiscasedonot useo-
rings, asaspaceisrequired between the spigot and the innerwall of the leak-
control flange sothat anysub-surfaceliquid canescape.
2.Ensureunit isset up in the pipe tothe appropriateheight, having regardtothe
depthof the topping tobeappliedtothe structural slab (e.g., cement screed, sheet
vinyl, epoxyfloorcoating, tiles, etc.)
3.Checkthat the removablestrainerbasket isinside the grateassemblypriortothe
handingoverof the job.
F.Operation and Maintenance
Thisisthe most critical aspect of basket trap floorwastes. Inordertofunction properly,
basket trap floorwastesrequireregular cleaning of the basket and inspectionof the
secondarystrainer. How often thisneedstooccurisamatterforthe end-user, but we
recommendthat SPS basket trapsbe inspected at least onceperday.
SPS baskettrap floorwastes should notbeused as in-floorgarbagereceptacles.
Thestrainer system isonlyas goodas themaintenance itreceives. SPS
recommendsthattheend-users beencouraged to implementproper cleaning and
maintenance procedures.
Forexample, alarge and well-known fast food chainstipulatesthat itsrestaurant floors be
swept everyhourandthe basketsarecleaned out at the end of everyshift.
Also, somelargerandbusieroperationshaveinvested in two setsof baskets. Thisallows
the cleaningstaff toefficientlyreplaceclogged basketswithclean ones. Thispractice
maximisesthe effectiveness of the floorwastesandminimisesmess andthe riskof
cloggingup secondarystrainers.
The biggest problemwe seein the fieldarisesfromusers who destroythe secondary
strainers and/ordiscardthe baskets. The secondarystrainers, if installedproperly, are
verydifficult toremove. Also, the strainerbasketscanbe supplied withstainless steel
fixing cable tohelp prevent thembeingdiscarded.
Cleaningproceduresarelistedbelow.
