2Getting Acquainted
Congratulations on purchasing a Star Systems International (SSI) Integrated RFID Reader.
The Procyon is a Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) Integrated RFID reader that conforms to the EPCglobal
Class 1 Generation 2 and ISO 18000-6 Type “C” air interface protocols. Procyon supports operation
in the 860 –960 MHz frequency ranges (subject to regulatory region).
Procyon has been designed to be used in outdoor and rugged environments. The reader is housed
in an IP66 rated enclosure and is ideal for vehicle identification, parking access control and rugged
supply chain applications.
This document is intended to be used by professional installers who are connecting to, configuring
and installing the Procyon Integrated Reader. Before attempting to install or operate this product,
installers should be familiar with the following:
Microsoft©Windows©based software installation and operation.
Device communication parameters using Ethernet network communications.
RFID reader configuration including antenna placement.
Basic digital input/output control.

4Installing The Procyon
This section explains all of the necessary information required to install the Procyon.
4.1 Installation Pre-Requirements
PC with a minimum Pentium 4 class CPU.
Microsoft ® Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.
100 MB available hard drive space.
Ethernet TCP/IP network connectivity.
PoE switches/injectors (IEEE 802.3at compatible).
Full feature category 5e Ethernet cable (IEEE 802.3at compatible and within 90 meters
long).
4.2 Mechanical Installation
Using the mounting kit provided, the reader can be mounted onto a pole with a diameter of 40-60
mm.
STEP 2
Assemble the mounting bracket
according to the figure shown.

Put on the mounting bracket in the
orientation needed and put on the
bolts. Tighten the bolts using a
wrench. (IMPORTANT: ONLY USE
THE BOLTS PROVIDED)

4.3 Connecting To The Reader
Procedure for connecting the Ethernet cable to the Procyon:
The reader may be setup through two methods: via the PoE switch or by connecting directly to the
host computer.
By PoE Switch
1. Connect the reader to a PoE switch with a full feature category 5e Ethernet cable.
2. Connect the host computer to the PoE switch via an Ethernet cable (see diagram on pg. 5).

turning it clockwise.

Direct Computer Connection
Unless the Ethernet port on your host computer supports PoE, a PoE injector is required. The
following diagram illustrates set-up using an injector.
1. Connect the reader to the PoE injector with a full feature Category-5 Ethernet cable.
2. Connect the PoE injector to the host computer.
Note: The Procyon reader can also be connected to access points or switches that do not have PoE
support by using a PoE injector as shown below.

ATTENTION: DO NOT CONNECT PROCYON TO A NON-PoE POWER SUPPLY. THIS WILL DAMAGE
THE READER AND VOID THE WARRANTY
4.4 Software Installation
The instructions that follow explain the software installation process:
1. Insert the accompanying CD into the CD tray of your computer or download the software
from www.star-int.net.
2. Start the RFIDCTRL-v1.3.msi (the version you obtain maybe newer than the version stated
here) program from the CD and follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
3. After you have installed the accompanying software on your computer and established a
network connection with the reader, you are ready to run the reader.
4.5 Starting Up The Reader
After established the PoE connection to the reader, it takes approximately 35 seconds for the reader
boot up. During the booting, the LED will blinks yellow, green and blue; when booting sequence
completed; the LED will show a static green in combination with a heart-beat blue. At this stage the
reader should have retrieved an IP address from the DHCP server, run the reader auto discovery tool
from the Windows Start Menu:
Windows may prompt you for firewall access of the discovery tool. Allow access on both private and
public networks:
