Telescope
. Back in the mid
1960’s my father bought me a 60mm refractor to encourage my interest in sci-
ence. That telescope almost ended my interest in astronomy altogether! With
its wobbly mount, inferior eyepieces and optics, I struggled for several nights,
then retired the telescope to the closet. There are millions of cheap depart-
ment store telescopes sitting in closets. This should not be the case with your
telescope. You are now the owner of a quality telescope that is easy to use.
Please look over this manual to learn how easy it is use your new
Stellarvue.

ASTRONOMICAL TELESCOPES
ASTRONOMICAL TELESCOPES
IN RODUC ION
Stellarvue telescopes are individually made. Stellarvue refractors use a full
multi-coating to increase light transmission and contrast. This telescope uses
lenses that are accurately hand figured but may show some cosmetic marks
caused by test plates. However, any cosmetic marks you may see will not
affect visual or photographic performance and should not be a cause for con-
cern. The telescope is internally baffled and treated with an ultra flat black
interior. This along with the full multi-coatings results in exceptional contrast
and clarity.
Assembling your telescope is easy. Once it is assembled and adjusted, you
are ready to observe. The telescope may be easily moved, but make sure all
parts are secure and the eyepiece tray is empty before you do. When trans-
porting the telescope, we recommend storing the tube assembly in a padded
case to protect the finish. Occasional lubrication of the mount is all that is
needed to maintain this telescope. Avoid keeping it outside continuously as
metal parts may rust and corrode. When working in the field, it is a good idea
to cover the telescope when not in use, to prevent dust from settling on the
optical and mechanical parts.
1.
CARE AND MAIN ENANCE
Refractors are maintenance free. They do not require alignment like reflectors
and compound telescopes, and they are generally smaller and more compact.
This makes a refractor an ideal grab and go telescope.
eep the telescope covered when not in use with the lens caps in place. Cover
the lens to reduce the dust and debris that can fall onto the lens. When observ-
ing, extend the dewshield all the way out to minimize the amount of dew that
forms on the lens. If the lens gets wet, bring it indoors and let it air dry before
replacing the lens cap. Cleaning should be done very infrequently. A small
amount of dust or small spots on a lens will not affect performance. If dust accu-
mulates on the lens, blow it off with a bulb syringe. If the lens needs cleaning,
make sure you blow all the dust off the lens before cleaning it. Dust particles
can be hard and scratch glass. So every bit of dust should be removed before
you use a lens cloth. Once the lens is clear of any particles, use our lens clean-
er cloth and liquid to clean the lens, followed by a dry wipe. Never apply cleaner
directly onto the lens but into the cloth so cleaner does not migrate around the
lens to the inside. The tube exterior can be cleaned with a lint free cloth and a
commercial cleaner like “Fantastic.”
Your telescope comes with a retracting dewshield. Velvet is used to provide a
solid, smooth motion. Under some climates, the velvet may compress slightly
and the dewshield may slip down when the telescope is pointed upward. In this
case, you need to add more velvet. We provide strips
of adhesive velvet for this purpose.
1. Remove the dust cover and unscrew the tapered
ring from the dewshield. Turn the ring and not the
dewshield.
2. Slide off the dewshield rotating it clockwise as you
pull it off.
3. Add two or three strips of the adhesive velvet over
the existing velvet making sure the edges are
adhered well to the surface.
4. Replace the dewshield making sure the velvet is
fitted under the edge so it does not pull up. Rotate
the shield clockwise as you carefully install it. Thread it
to the tapered ring.
Never touch the lens cell retainer located on the
front of the lens cell.

Telescopes gather light with their main objective lens and the eyepiece is used
to magnify it. In a refractor, the main lens is in the front and the eyepiece is in
the rear. Since astronomical telescopes point upward, the eyepiece points
straight down so a star diagonal is required for viewing. An astronomical tele-
scope used with a star diagonal provides a reversed image. An erecting
prism, which may be obtained for use with this telescope, will provide correct-
ly oriented images. But erecting prisms are not as sharp as a mirror star diag-
onal which is preferred for astronomical use.
This telescope is designed to come to focus when used with a star diagonal or
erecting prism. On rare occasions you may wish to view straight through with-
out a star diagonal or prism. This will provide a reverse image. To do this,
obtain the extension tube (#ET3).

UNPACkING.
Check to make sure you have all the necessary parts:
1. Telescope
2. 1 1/4” adapter
3. Lens caps
4. Clamshell
ELESCOPE COMPONEN S
The size and color of your telescope tube will
vary depending on the model. If any parts are
missing, e-mail us at:: mail@ stellarvue.com
or call: (530) 823-7796.
USING HE ELESCOPE
It couldn’t be easier. With the telescope mounted
on the Stellarvue M2 or any other suitable mount,
insert the diagonal into the focuser and then the
eyepiece into the diagonal. Focus with the focus-
ing knobs.
Start using the lowest power eyepiece first. The
lowest power has the widest view making it easier
to locate distant objects in the telescope eyepiece.
If you want to boost power, do so only after you
have located and centered the object at low
power. Focus using the two focus knobs on the
focuser until the object is sharp. That is all there is
to it.
S ELLARVUE FOCUSER
This telescope uses the standard Stellarvue dual speed focuser. The thumb
screw knob on the bottom is the focus lock.
Make sure this is loose during normal oper-
ation.
The large Allen set screw next to the focus
lock is the tension adjustment. If your
focuser drawtube slips when the telescope
is pointed skyward, use the supplied Allen
wrench to tighten this only enough so that
your heaviest accessories will not slip.
bINOVIEWING WI H HE SV80ED and SV80ED RAP OR
The SVR80ED may be used with binoviewers allowing you to view with both
eyes open. This provides a stunning 3D effect when viewing open star clusters
and other deep space objects. Some people really enjoy binoviewing.
Refractors may be used with binoviewers if a special adapter is inserted in
between the binoviewer and the diagonal. These telescopes require such an
adapter and with it they will work with all commercial binoviewers.

OPTIONAL FINDERS
Since this telescope offers a wide field of view, many
users find they do not need a finderscope. They merely
use a wide field 2” eyepiece. But the majority of users
prefer either a reflex finder (which operates at 1X and
displays a red dot where the telescope is pointed) or an
optical finderscope that operates from 9X - 13X and has
a crosshair reticle. The simplest to use if the Stellarvue
Red Dot Finder #F1001 shown to the right.
We also offer a more advanced reflex finder featuring
multiple reticle patterns. A switch permits the user to
switch from a projected red dot (two sizes), a circle or a
crosshair pattern. #F2

OPTICAL FINDERSCOPES
Now available in 50mm, 60mm and 80
mm clear aperture, these finderscopes
have many unique and desirable features
the others lack. We designed them with a
90 degree fully multicoated correct image
erecting prism with 1.25” helical focuser
so other 1.25” eyepieces could be used.
The performance of this finderscope is stunning when used with Televue
Naglers. A complete selection of Stellarvue dovetail mounting ring systems are
available separately for various types of telescopes.
ULTIMATE FINDER/GUIDER
The Stellarvue SV70ED makes an out-
standing finder/guidescope that can be
used visually or with autoguiders. Use
our 2” erecting prism and our 2” 26mm
illuminated reticle eyepiece for stunning
4.2 degree porthole views. This is our
sharpest guidescope ever.
The TP5 rail is our
“Vixen” sized rail. This
rail is used on Stellarvue
mounts that use the TD2
shoe (M2 & MG2), the
Celestron CG5, Vixen
GP, and many more
The TP6 rail is our
“Losmandy” sized rail. This
rail is used on the
Celestron CGEM and CGE
Pro, Losmandy mounts,
Stellarvue mounts that
have the large TD7 dove-
tail shoe and many more.
