FAQs and Troubleshooting Guide
The machine doesn't work although it is properly connected to the power
supply.
Check and ensure that both the coffee bean hopper, ground coffee container
and their lids are correctly in place. The machine will not start if these parts are
incorrectly positioned.
The machine has stopped grinding although there are still some beans left
in the bean hopper.
The machine may have ground enough coffee for the number of cups selected. To
grind more coffee, press the START/STOP button again. If the machine does not
grind any more coffee, gently tap the chute to loosen any blockages, then retry.
I don't drink coffee every day. How long can I store it?
Coffee starts losing its freshness almost immediately after roasting, so try to buy
your beans in smaller batches. Grinding your own coffee is best, but only grind as
much as you will need at any time, as coffee turns stale relatively quickly after it
is ground. Properly stored (see below), coffee beans should retain their flavour for
around two to four weeks.
What is the best way to store coffee?
Coffee (beans or ground) should be stored in an opaque, airtight container in a
cool, dark area, such as in a pantry. Avoid any areas where the coffee is exposed
to direct sunlight, heat or moisture. Don't store coffee in a refrigerator or freezer, as
it will absorb the moisture from the air around it, which will spoil its taste. Vacuum
sealing ground coffee will extend its shelf life, and it will enable freezing, if required.
Does it really matter how finely I ground my coffee beans?
Yes. Too coarsely ground beans will result in under-extracted coffee, which is
weaker and less flavoursome. If your grind is too fine, the coffee may get over-
extracted, which gives it a bitter taste, or it may clog your filter and lead to possible
overflow in an espresso machine.
What is the right grind size for my coffee?
The size of your grind depends on the type of coffee you are making.
• For strong and intense types of coffee (such as Italian espresso or Turkish
coffee) made in an espresso machine or similar, the beans should be finely
ground until they have the consistency of salt. If the grind feels like sugar, it's too
coarse; if it feels like flour, it's too fine.
• For lighter, fresher styles of coffee (such as percolator, plunger, drip-filter or
pour-over coffee), grind the beans to a medium or coarse consistency.
