Please read this manual carefully before setting-up and using your unit. The electronic version of this document is the controlled copy. Therefore, all printed
versions of this document are uncontrolled.
1. SubC equipment is designed to work at various depth ratings on unmanned vehicles. Designs are tested to their full pressure rating. Production units are
pressure-tested to a nominal rating to ensure no leaks. If using our equipment on vehicles containing people, you do so at your own discretion as
SubC does not certify equipment for direct human contact underwater. Manned submersibles require equipment to have additional pressure-testing
to ensure safety.
2. The camera has been designed for subsea usage. Observe the operating temperature specifications before prolonged usage in air. If camera is running
in a warm environment (>20C), it automatically reduces the clock speed and decreases performance. Run the camera in water.
3. The power supply is polarized. Ensure the correct polarity is used before plugging into the unit. There are many built-in protections on the camera pins,
however, incorrect electrical connections may still damage the internal electronics. See your camera’s datasheet for correct wiring. Some equipment
has a custom pinout selected at point of sale. Check your documentation before powering.
4. Water should not come in contact with the pins on the bulkheads. When not in use, use dummy plugs. If water touches the pins, use contact cleaner
and compressed air to remove the water.
5. Before attaching the connector to the camera, be certain that the pins are aligned, clean and lightly lubricated with appropriate silicone o-ring grease
(Ultimate o-ring lubricant for example http://www.ablesealanddesign.com).
6. All fasteners on the camera are metric. They should be hand tightened during regular maintenance.
7. There is a lithium-ion battery inside the Rayfin. While lithium-ion batteries are very stable, there is always a chance they can generate heat, catch fire or
even explode. Please observe safety precautions when using the camera.

Best practices for assembling your system
Greasing the Connector/Dummy Plug (ABOVE WATER - DRY MATE ONLY)
A. Connectors must be greased with Molykote 44 Medium (or equivalent)
before every mating. Check the MSDS for your type of o-ring lubricant
before use.
B. A layer of grease corresponding to minimum 1/10 of socket depth should be
applied to the female connector
C. The inner edge of all sockets should be completely covered, and a thin
transparent layer of grease left visible on the face of the connector
D. After greasing, fully mate the male and female connector in order to secure
optimal distribution of grease on pins and in sockets
E. To confirm that grease has been sufficiently applied, de-mate and check for
grease on every male pin then re-mate the connector

Best practices for assembling your system
For the fundamentals of how to capture excellent underwater photos and detailed video, check out
our Underwater Photography Guide:
http://ftp.subcimaging.com/docs/manuals/SubC_Underwater_Photography_Guide.pdf
1. SubC products are designed to run in water. There is built-in thermal protection in our
equipment, however, we cannot guarantee performance in air.
2. The camera, LED, and laser should be attached to a solid mounting point with either stainless
steel hose clamps OR a machined clamp. In between the mount point and the equipment, use
some neoprene rubber, electrical tape, or similar insulation material to prevent corrosion from
dissimilar metal contact.
3. To limit particle backscatter, the LED should be positioned as far away from the camera as
possible in the system while also angling the light so that there is sufficient overlap. The Rayfin
camera field of view is 80 degrees diagonal and the LED’s beam angle is also matched at 80. So
the light should be slightly further from the scene than the camera, which is easily achievable. If it
isn’t set up properly, you may end up with dark corners in the images.
4. When connecting the cables to the equipment, use o-ring lubricant. See page about o-ring
lubricant.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue Mitigation
JPEG noise filtering
There could be a noise filter applied to JPEG images which cause
textures to be blended. If you have a lot of light, there may not be an
issue.
Take pictures in RAW mode to avoid noise filtering.
The in-water focus range is 0.5m to infinity, in v2.12 and onwards If this is a problem for your application, please let SubC know.
Static IP is a new feature in 2.13.9. It is currently only compatible with
the SAMBA file sharing protocol while on a static network with no
DHCP server.
See Networking Modes
Some virus scanners may flag the Rayfin v2.13.9 installer We are currently working with Microsoft on a fix.
Aquorea LED starts before Rayfin application is ready
When Aquorea is turned on from the Rayfin itself and then powered
down, the LED goes out as soon as the power is cut. Currently,
during the power down process, the LED loses power before
getting the power down command.
Not known to cause any major issues, but please be aware when
using the Rayfin and LEDs in a battery application.

Issue Mitigation
Camera is returning a loopback IP
(127.0.0.1)
Make sure camera is connected to a device that assigns IP’s (router or modem) and not a
switch.
The camera focuses on foreground
silt in the water column
Autofocus is enabled by default. Change it to manual focus under the Auto/Manual Focus
icon.
Not sure if the serial port is working Do a serial loopback at the end of the camera connector and work back the system until the
loopback is successful. If not successful check topside.
Serial port is working but not getting
correct operation in the camera
Solution a: The selected baud rate may be incorrect.
Solution b: The aux port is set for the wrong transceiver type. Set to RS485 if in RS232 or visa
versa
Solution c: The aux port may not be set for the correct device type. Set to “Pan-Tilt
Emulator”.
Manual exposure is not working Solution a: Manual Exposure is only available with Manual Focus.
Solution b: Exposure can be locked (LockAE or UnLockAE) while in Auto Focus but cannot
be set manually while focus is Auto.

Establishing connectivity with your camera
Click on the Settings icon in the top right-hand corner of your main screen then click the
Communications icon.
AUTO DETECTION
Ethernet: Camera should have been auto-detected and appear under Detected Cameras
(eg. SubCRayfin18812).
MANUAL CONNECTION
There is a short period of time where a camera is available but has not yet been
auto-detected. The software polls every 10 seconds to find cameras. If your Rayfin doesn’t
appear after 10 seconds, you can then manually enter the IP address or serial (SubCxxxxx)
that’s found on the back of the camera in the IP text box and press Connect.
Note:
●Rayfin control can find cameras on your network using the Network Service
Discovery (NSD) protocol. Cameras updated to the most recent version will
broadcast themselves as a network service
●If using a static IP, use the manual connection method
●CAT5E or CAT6 ethernet cables and a gigabit rated router are recommended in
order to provide the bandwidth necessary for streaming or transferring 4K videos.
