How to Rackmount the
Sun Enterprise 250 Server
This guide shows you how to install a Sun Enterprise™ 250 server into a Sun™
Enterprise Expansion Cabinet, or other EIA-compliant rack enclosure.
To rackmount a server, you need to:
■Prepare the rack enclosure—page 1-7

■Install the slide assemblies in the rack enclosure—page 1-18

Cautions
Caution – Install the chassis as low as possible in the rack enclosure. For best
stability, do not install the chassis above equipment that weighs less than it does.

Caution – The chassis is heavy. In the following procedures, two people are
required to move the chassis. Two people are also required to align and install the
slide assemblies in the rack.
Caution – For proper ventilation, each Sun Enterprise 250 server in the rack
enclosure requires 28 square inches (175 square cm) of unrestricted airflow into the
front of the system, and 23 square inches (143 square cm) of unrestricted exhaust
port at the rear of the system. Maintain a minimum 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) clearance
between the system and any front or rear doors.

Rack Enclosure Requirements
The Sun Enterprise 250 server is designed so that you can install it into a
Sun 56-inch (143-cm) tall Enterprise Expansion cabinet or other suitable
industry-standard rack enclosure that meets the requirements listed in the
table below. You need a Sun rackmounting kit for each server that you will
rackmount.
Rack Enclosure Feature Requirement
Load Bearing Capacity The rack must firmly support the weight of an Sun Enterprise 250
server (118 lbs, 53 kg), plus the weight of the rackmounting
hardware, plus the weight of any other installed devices.
Vertical Space Requirements Each Sun Enterprise 250 server requires six rack units (10.5
inches, 26.7 cm) of vertical space for rack installation. A 56-
inch (143-cm) cabinet can accommodate up to four Sun
Enterprise 250 servers; a 68-inch (173-cm) and a 72-inch (183-
cm) cabinet can hold up to five servers.
Vertical Mounting Rail
Requirements The rack must have two pairs of vertical mounting rails (one pair in front, one in back) that conform to the EIA (RETMA) standard
for mounting hole spacing.
Left-side-to-right-side rail spacing (mounting hole center to
mounting hole center) for front and rear rails must be 18.3 inches
(46.5 cm).
Front-to-rear rail spacing must be at least 26.875 inches (68.26 cm)
and not more than 34.875 inches (88.5 cm) from the outside face of
the front rail to the outside face of the rear rail.
Front and rear vertical rail mounting faces must be parallel with
each other and with the front plane of the rack.
The Sun Enterprise 250 server will extend 2.3 inches (5.84 cm)
forward of the front vertical mounting rails, and the enclosure
extends 28.25 inches (71.76 cm) from the front face to the rear-
most point.
Doors If you are using a Sun Enterprise Expansion Cabinet, remove the
front door; otherwise, see the instructions provided with the rack
enclosure.

EMI Requirements Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding requirements are met
by the system chassis and metal side panels, which remain in place
when the unit is rackmounted.
Anti-Tip Protection The rack must be bolted securely to the floor or equipped with a
sturdy and extendable anti-tip leg. You must prevent the cabinet
from tipping forward when one or more Sun Enterprise 250 servers
and other devices are fully extended out the front of the rack.
Minimum Service Access An area not less than 3 feet (1 meter) deep and 6 feet (2
meters) wide must be available in front of the rack for
installation and service access.
When fully extended on its mounting rail slides, the system will
protrude 29.75 inches (75.6 cm) forward of the rack’s front vertical
mounting rails.
Fire Containment The rack enclosure must meet Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and
TUV Rheinland of N.A. requirements for fire containment.

The rackmounting kit also contains the following screws and nuts, shown actual
size.
Preparing the Rack Enclosure
1. Turn off the AC power to the rack enclosure and remove the front and rear panels, if
applicable.
See the instructions provided with the rack enclosure.
2. Stabilize the rack enclosure by extending its anti-tilt legs or bolting the rack securely to
the floor.
See the instructions provided with the rack enclosure.
Preparing the Chassis
Rack-Ready Server
If you purchased a rackmount configuration of the Sun Enterprise 250 server, the plastic
side panels have been removed and a rack-ready side access panel has been installed.
Before you install the rack-ready server in the rack enclosure, you need to:

Deskside Server
If you are preparing a deskside server to be rackmounted, you need to:
■Remove the side access panel from the chassis—page 1-8
■Remove the plastic side panels from the chassis—page 1-10
■Install the rack-ready side access panel—page 1-11
■Remove any bottom hardware (foot glides or optional casters)—page 1-13
■Attach the inner glides and the stop bracket to the chassis—page 1-14
Removing the Side Access Panel
1. Power off the system.
See the Sun Enterprise 250 Server Owner’s Guide for instructions.
2. Remove the security lock block, if present.

3. Loosen the two captive screws securing the side panel to the rear of the chassis.
4. Pull the side panel toward the back of the system.
Carefully disengage the hooks securing the side panel to the top of the chassis.
5. Lift the panel up and away from the system.

Removing the Plastic Side Panels
1. Remove the plastic outer panel that partially covers the top of the chassis.
a. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver under the plastic panel and carefully flex the
panel to disengage it from the chassis.
b. Slide the panel toward the back of the system.
c. Grasp the bottom edge of the panel in the center and lift it up.
Rotate the bottom edge away from the chassis to disengage the hooks.
d. Lift the panel off the system.

Installing the Rack-Ready Side Access Panel
1. Carefully turn the chassis onto its right side.
Enlist the help of another person to accomplish this safely.
Do not lift the chassis using the plastic panels at the front of the chassis. Place the
system on a solid surface that spaces the unit about 2 inches (5 cm) off the floor; for
example, use a pair of wooden boards. Do not allow any of the weight to rest on the
plastic panels at the front of the chassis.
2. Locate the rack-ready side access panel that you received with your rackmounting
kit.
3. Place the panel on the chassis and slide it toward the front of the system,
as shown.
4. Tighten the two captive screws that secure the panel to the rear of the chassis.

Removing the Chassis Foot Glides or Floor Casters
1. Remove all four foot glides from the underside of the chassis, if present.
Remove the Phillips screw at the center of each foot glide. Be sure to remove both
mounting brackets.
2. If your server has optional floor casters, remove the caster plate assembly.
Remove the eight Phillips screws that secure the floor casters assembly to the
underside of the chassis. See the instructions provided in the Sun Enterprise 250
Server Owner’s Guide.

Attaching Inner Glides and the Stop Bracket
1. Disconnect all external cables from the server rear panel, if present.
2. Carefully turn the chassis onto its right side (as viewed from the front), if you
haven’t already done so.
Enlist the help of another person to accomplish this safely.
Do not lift the chassis using the plastic panels at the front of the chassis. Place the
system on a solid surface that spaces the unit about 2 inches (5 cm) off the floor; for
example, use a pair of wooden boards. Do not allow any of the weight to rest on the
plastic panels at the front of the chassis.

3. Remove the inner glides from each slide assembly.
a. Pull the inner glide out as far as you can until it stops.
b. Press up on the lever on the inner glide and pull the inner glide completely
free from the slide.
