TheseinstructionsprovidesafetyandinstallationinstructionsforUL
ListedSunPowerphotovoltaic(PV)modulesthathavetheULlogoonthe
productlabel:

SeriesandM‐Seriesmodules.TheseStandardscoverflat‐platePVmodulesand
panelsintendedforinstallationonbuildingsorthoseintendedtobe
freestanding.TosatisfytheListingforthisproductthemodulesmustbemounted
witharackorstandoffstructure.TheListingdoesnotincludeintegrationintoa
buildingsurfacebecauseadditionalrequirementsmayapply.Thisproductisnot
intendedforusewhereartificiallyconcentratedsunlightisappliedtothemodule.
1.3LimitedWarranty
ModulelimitedwarrantiesaredescribedinfullintheSunPowerwarranty
certificatesobtainableatwww.sunpower.com.Insummary,theLimited
Warrantiesdonotapplytoanyofthefollowing:
ModuleswhichinSunPower'sabsolutejudgmenthavebeensubjectedtomisuse,
abuse,neglectoraccident;alteration;orimproperinstallation,applicationor
removal.Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto,installation,application,orremoval
byanypartyotherthanaSunPowerauthorizeddealer;non‐observanceof
SunPower'sinstallation,user’sand/ormaintenanceinstructions;repairor
modificationsbysomeoneotherthananapprovedservicetechnicianof
SunPower;powerfailuresurges,lightning,flood,fire,accidentalbreakage,or

2.0 SafetyPrecautions
Beforeinstallingthisproduct,readallsafetyinstructionsinthisdocument.
AllinstallationsmustbeperformedincompliancewiththeNationalElectrical
Code(NEC)andanyapplicablelocalcodes.
ForCanadianjurisdictions,installationsshallbeinaccordancewithCSAC22.1,
SafetyStandardforElectricalInstallations,CanadianElectricalCode,Part1
ModulescertifiedtoUL61730areSafetyClass2forprotectionagainst
electricshock
Therearenouser‐serviceablepartswithinthemodule.Donotattemptto
repairanypartofthemodule.
Installationshouldbeperformedonlybyqualifiedpersonnel.
Donotstandon,drop,scratch,orallowobjectstofallonmodulesasdoingso
maydamagethemandvoidthewarranty.
Donotplaceanythingonthemodules,evenforamomentbecauseresulting
residuemaydamageorstaintheglasssurface.
Ifthefrontglassisbroken,orthebacksheetistorn,contactwithanymodule
surfaceormoduleframecancauseelectricshock.
BrokenJ‐boxesorconnectorsareelectricalhazardsaswellaslaceration
hazards.Installersshouldremoveanysuchmodulefromthearrayand
contactSunPowerfordisposalinstructions.
Donotinstallorhandlethemoduleswhentheyarewetorduringperiodsof
highwind.
Donotblockdrainholesorallowwatertopoolinornearmoduleframes.
SunPowerrecommendsaconservativeminimumcablebendradiusofequal
toorgreaterthan40mm(1.5”).
Unconnectedconnectorsmustalwaysbeprotectedfrompollution(e.gdust,
humidity,foreignparticles,etc),priortoinstallation.Donotleave
unconnected(unprotected)connectorsexposedtotheenvironment.Aclean
assemblyenvironmentisthereforeessentialtoavoidperformance
degradation.
Donotallowtheconnectorstocomeincontactwithchemicalssuchas
greases,oilsandorganicsolventswhichmaycausestresscracking.
Donotdisconnectanymoduleswhenitsinverterisfeedingintothegrid.
Switchofftheinverterbeforedisconnecting,reinstallingormakinganyaction
withthemodules.
Forconnectors,whichareaccessibletountrainedpeople,itisimperativeto
usethelockingconnectorsandsafetyclips,ifapplicable,inordertodefend
againstuntrainedpersonneldisconnectingthemodulesoncetheyhavebeen
installed.
CoverallmodulesinthePVarraywithanopaqueclothormaterialbefore
makingorbreakingelectricalconnections.

2.1FireRating
ThemodulefireratingisType2perUL1703,2013editionandClassCper
UL1703,2002edition.FireratingclassificationforanyPVsystemusing
UL1703:2013canonlyestablishafireratingincombinationwiththemounting
systemratingsnormallyfoundinthemountingsysteminstallationinstructions.
3.0 ElectricalCharacteristics
ElectricalcharacteristicsofthemodulesaredescribedinTable1below.Rated
electricalcharacteristicsarewithin10percentofmeasuredvaluesatStandard
TestConditionsof:1000W/m2,25°Ccelltemperatureandsolarspectral
irradianceperIEC60904‐3orirradiationof(airmass)AM1.5global(G)spectrum.
Eachmodulecontainsthreebypassdiodes.Themaximumseriesfuseratingis
15A;forA‐SeriesandM‐Seriesmodulesitis20A.
Undernormalconditions,aphotovoltaicmodulemayexperienceconditionsthat
producemorecurrentand/orvoltagethanreportedatStandardTestConditions.
Accordingly,thevaluesofISCandVOCmarkedonULListedmodulesshould
alwaysbemultipliedbyafactorof1.25whendeterminingcomponentvoltage
ratings,conductorcapacities,fusesizesandsizeofcontrolsconnectedtothe
moduleoutput.RefertoSection690‐8oftheNECforanadditional1.25Safety
factorwhichmaybeapplicable.
DANGER!Moduleinterconnectioncablespassdirectcurrent(dc)and
aresourcesofvoltagewhenthemoduleisunderloadandwhenitis
exposedtolight.Directcurrentcanarcacrossgapsandmaycause
injuryordeathifimproperconnectionordisconnectionismade;or
ifcontactismadewithmoduleleadsthatarefrayedortorn.Donot
connectordisconnectmoduleswhenacurrentsourceisenergizing
theconductors.Modulesmaycontainhighvoltagewhen

4.0 ElectricalConnectionsandSystemMonitoring
Modulesmaybeconnectedinseriesorparalleltoachievethedesiredelectrical
outputprovidedcertainconditionsaremet.
Evenifallowedbylocalregulation,PlugandSocketconnectorsmatedtogetherin
aPVsystemmustbeofthesametype(model,rating)fromthesame
manufactureri.e.aplugconnectorfromonemanufacturerandasocket
connectorfromanothermanufacturer,orviceversa,shallnotbeusedtomakea
connection.
SunPowerrecommendsaconservativeminimumbendingradius(R)5xcable
diametermustbemaintainedandmustnotbebentonthedirectexitofthe
connectororjunctionbox.Avoidexposureofelectricalconnectionstodirect
sunlightanddonotplacetheconnectorinalocationwherewatercouldeasily
accumulate.Installersmustrefertoconnectormanufacturer’sinstructionfor
furtherinstallationandconnectionrequirements.
Connectorsarefactoryassembledwithintentionalgapsbetweenthecablenut
andthebodyoftheconnector.Donotretightenmoduleconnectornutsasthis
mayleadtostresscrackingoftheconnectorassemblyandwillvoidthewarranty.
4.1EquipmentGrounding
Toreducethepossibilityofelectricalshock,groundtheframeofthemoduleor
arrayperNECbeforewiringthecircuit.Inordertoinstallinaccordancewiththeir
ULListing,SunPowermodulesmustbegroundedusinggroundinghardwarethat
meetsrequirementsforgroundingsystemsinUL467,UL1703,orUL1741;on
anodizedaluminumframes.SunPowerrecommendsusingoneofthefollowing
methodsofgroundingthemoduleframe.Inaddition,toavoidcorrosiondueto
theuseofdissimilarmetalsSunPowerrecommendsstainlesssteelbetween
copperandaluminum.FortheGeneration5(G5)frame,onlymethods1and2
apply.A‐Series‐BLKmodulesmustbeinstalledwiththeGroundLugAssemblyof
theInvisimountmountingsystemusingtheIlscoGBL‐4DBTgroundinglug
tightenedtoatorqueof85in‐lbstobondthemoduleframetotherail.Therails
usedforbondingmustbepartofthesystem’sgroundpath.
1)Attachalay‐inlug(IlscoGBL‐4DBT,BurndyCL50‐DB‐TorTycoSolklip1954381‐
2)tooneofthegroundingholesonthemoduleframe,andattachthe
groundconductortothelug.Usestainlesssteelhardware(bolt,washers,
andnut).Useanexternal‐toothstarwasherbetweenthelugandthe
moduleframeinordertopiercetheanodizingandestablishelectrical
contactwiththealuminumframe.Theassemblymustendwithanutthat’s
torquedto20–25in‐lb(fora#10‐32bolt).Alockwasherorotherlocking
mechanismisrequiredtomaintaintensionbetweentheboltandthe
assembly.Theconductormustbeattachedtothegroundlugusingthelug’s
setscrew.RefertoNEC690.
2)SunPowermodulesmayalsobegroundedthroughtheuseofSunPowerIFF
clipswhichareULListed(1703and1741).IFFcliptorquevalueis35–45in‐
lbsfora1/4‐20orM6bolt,butmaybehigherinspecificapplications.
WhenusingIFFclips,themodulemountingsystemmustbegroundedas
perNEC250.
Note:Method3isevaluatedtoUL1703byETL.Assuch,theuseofthesedevices
isnotconsideredpartoftheULListingofthesemodules.
3)IftheUniracSOLARMOUNTsystemisusedformountingthemodules,
groundingisachievedusingeitheraBURNDYWileyWEEB‐UMCorWEEB‐

5.2MountingConfigurations
Modulesintegratedintoormountedoveraroofingsystemmustbemounted
overafire‐resistantroofcoveringratedfortheapplication.Modulesmaybe
mountedatanyangle,fromhorizontaltovertical.Toreducesoiling,modules
shouldbemountedataminimumof10degrees.
Residential(black)moduleframeshavetwoprofiletypes,G3andG5.Commercial
(silver)moduleframeshavepermanentlyattachedstackingpins.Mounting
systemhardwareusedwithcommercialmodulesmustaccountforthepresence
ofthesestackingpins.MechanicalspecificationsformodulesareshowninTable
4.
Inordertopreventwaterfromenteringthejunctionbox,whichcouldpresenta
safetyhazard,modulesshouldbeorientedwiththejunctionboxinthe
uppermostpositionandnotbemountedsuchthatthecellfacesdownward(e.g.
onatrackingstructurethatpositionsthemoduleswiththejunctionboxfacing
skywardduringsleepmode).
For128‐cellandP‐Seriesmodulesaminimumof4″ofclearancebetweenthe
moduleframesandthestructure(orgrade)isrequired;forallothermodulesa
minimumof1.5″ofclearanceisrequired.Therequiredminimumclearance

methodhasbeencertifiedbyathird‐partyorganizationaccordingtoUL
1703.Forframeholemounting,modulesmustbesecuredusingtheholes
locatedat322mmfromtheshortendofthemodule(96‐cellmodules);and
433mmfromtheendofthemodule(128‐cellmodules).Forcarport
installationsthesupportingstructurehasbeenpre‐drilled.For128‐cell
modulesforcarportassembly,modulesmustbesecuredusingonlythe
holeslocated433mmfromtheendsofthemoduleandhardwaredescribed
aboveinSection4.1,Item5.SeeFigure2forcarportassemblydetails.
2) ClampsorClips:MountthemodulewiththeIFFclipsonthelongersidesof
themodule.Thecenterlineoftheclipsmustbe50‐400mmforG5frame
(150–380mmforG3frame)fromthecornerofthemodule.Ensurethatthe
clampsareofsufficientstrengthtoallowforthemaximumdesignpressure
ofthemodule.TheIFFcliphardwaremustbetightenedtoatorqueof35‐45
in‐lbs.Clampsthatsecuretothe
topoftheframemustnot
deformthetopflange.Clamps
mustapplyforcecollinearwith
the‘wall’ofthemoduleframe

Clampsorinstallationprocedures
thatputexcessiveforceonthe

ofmodulecornerstoreduceriskofframecornerdeflectionandglass
breakage.Whenclampingtothemoduleframe,torqueshouldnever
exceed132in‐lbs(15Nm)toreducechancesofframedeformationand/or
glassbreakage.Iftheclampmanufacturerrecommendsaspecifictorque
valuewhichislowerthan132in‐lbs(15Nm),theinstallershouldusethe
clampmanufacturer’storquevalue.Iftheclampmanufacturerrecommends
aspecifictorquevaluewhichishigherthan132in‐lbs(15Nm),theinstaller
shouldcontacttheclampmanufacturerforacceptanceofthe132in‐lbs(15

albedofactorwillincreaseirradianceonthebacksideandresultinhigherbifacial
gainofthemodule.Thesurfaceconditions,monthoftheyear,timeofday,GHI
andDNIbothinfluencetheamountofincidentrearsideirradiance.
SunPowerrecommendstocheckwithsolarmodulemountinghardwaresupplier
inordertodeterminetheStructureShadingfactorofyourparticularinstallation.
TheStructureShadingFactorvarieswithrackingsystemdesign,irradiance,
albedoandheightofmoduleinstallationabovegroundandhasanoverallimpact
ontherearsideirradiancemismatch.
TheRearsidemismatchlossesareproportionaltothealbedo,heightofthe
modulesabovegroundandstructureshadingfactor.Theirradiancenon‐
uniformityontherearsideresultsinmismatchgenerallyasthealbedoincreases
andinstallationheightofthemodulesarelowertotheground.
5.4BifacialElectricalConsiderations
Theoverallelectricalbifacialgainisdeterminedbythecombinationofalbedo,
irradiance,shadinglossesfromtherearside,rearsidemismatchandheightof
installationaboveground.PleaserefertotheSunPowerdatasheetforthe
electricaloutputswithrespecttotheoverallbifacialgain.Pleaseutiliseasuitable
performancesoftwarepackagetosimulatetheoverallbifacialgain
5.5ModuleHandling
Donotplacemodulesfaceforwardindirectcontactwithabrasivesurfaceslike
roofs,driveways,woodenpallets,railings,stuccowalls,etc…
Themodulefrontsurfaceglassissensitivetooilsandabrasivesurfaces,which
mayleadtoscratchesandirregularsoiling.
Duringstorage,modulesneedtobeprotectedfromrainoranykindsofliquids.
Requiredstoragetemperatureisbetween10°Cto40°Cinadryenvironment
(humiditybetween30to80%).Donotstoremodulesoutdoortoavoidmoisture
andwetconditions.
Modulesthatfeatureantireflectivecoatedglassarepronetovisiblefingerprint
marksiftouchedonthefrontglasssurface.SunPowerrecommendshanding
moduleswithanti‐reflectiveglasswithgloves(noleathergloves)orlimiting
touchingofthefrontsurface.Anyfingerprintmarksresultingfrominstallation
willnaturallydisappearovertimeorcanbereducedbyfollowingthewashing
guidelinesinSection6.0below.Anymodulecoverage(coloredplastictarpsor
similar)duringinstallationcanleadtopermanentfrontglassdiscolorationandis
notrecommended.Theuseofvacuumliftingpadscancausepermanentmarks
onthefrontglass.Neverliftormovethemoduleusingthecablesorthejunction
boxunderany‐circumstances.
ShadingincidenceneedtobeavoidedduringPVsystemoperation.Thesystemis
notsupposedtobeenergizeduntilthemountingscaffolding,fencesorrailing
havebeenremovedfromtheroof.
Systemsshouldbedisconnectedinanycasesofmaintenancewhichcancause
shading(e.g.chimneysweeping,anyroofmaintenance,antenna/dish
installations,etc).
6.0MaintenanceandCleaning
TrainedSunPowerdealerortrainedSunPowersupportpersonnelshouldinspect
allmodulesannuallyforsafeelectricalconnections,soundmechanical
connections,andfreedomfromcorrosion.
Periodiccleaningofmoduleglasshasresultedinimprovedperformancelevels,
especiallyinregionswithlowlevelsofannualprecipitation;thereforeSunPower
recommendsperiodiccleaningofthemodules.
Tocleanamodule,washitsglasssurfacewithpotable,non‐heatedwater.
Normalwaterpressureisadequate,butpressurizedwater(upto1500psi)may
beused.Somefingerprints,stains,oraccumulationsofdirtontheglassmaybe
removedwithover‐the‐counterglasscleaners(suchasWindex®orequivalent),or
witha3%soap‐and‐watersolution.Forsmallersystems,wetthemoduleglass
withthesolution,letitstandforfiveminutes,andthenwetthemagainandusea
