GENERAL
Sunnen MMT Spindle Adapter is designed to allow
Sunnen MHS®-Series Modular Honing System to use
Sunnen MMT TURBOHONE®Multi-Stone Tools.
Sunnen TURBOHONE Multi-Stone Tools are
designed to provide superior speed and accuracy on
Sunnen high-production machines.
INSTALLATION
To install Adapter, proceed as follows:
1. Follow SETUP instructions on main menu.
2. Press F2, Install New Tool. Warning Appears.
WARNING
When installing new Tool, remove Red Spindle
Adapter Cap.
3. Remove Red Spindle Adapter Cap from Spindle,
by removing three (3) Socket Head Capscrews (see
Figure 1).
NOTE: Red Spindle Adapter Cap will not be used
with MMT TURBOHONE Tools; save for
reinstallation for other tools.
4. Press (ENTER) when complete. Tools moves
down, out of spindle. (That is, machine will expand
Tool until feed adapter is fully exposed.)
5. Remove existing Tool:
• While holding Spindle Nose with Spanner Wrench
(supplied), loosen Tool by turning Wedge Nut using
preset Torque Wrench and Torque Wrench Head
(supplied).
• Grasp Tool by Wedge Nut and unscrew Mandrel
from Spindle.
CAUTION
DO NOT grasp Tool at Hub while rotating Tool. This
may damage Tool.
6. Install Wedge Quick Disconnect: Wipe Face of
Spindle Adapter and Hub to ensure faces are clean;
then, screw Quick Disconnect into Spindle. Tighten
with wrench (see Figure 2).
7. Loosen Lettered Setscrews in Spindle Nose (see
Figure 3).
8. Remove Inner Spindle (see Figure 4).
9. Slide MMT Inner Spindle Nose into Spindle Nose
and secure by tightening Setscrews (see Figures 5 & 6).
10. Assembly Collet & Collet Nut (see Figure 7).
11. Install Collet and Collet Nut on Inner Spindle
Nose (see Figure 8).
12. Install MMT Tool (see Figure 9):
• Insert Tool into Adapter, until wedge is seated
firmly in Wedge Quick Disconnect Assembly.
(Mounting Flange on Tool is flush with face of
Collet.)
• While holding upward pressure on wedge, use UP
Selector Switch to retract wedge 25mm (1 in).

• Push Mandrel Up against Collet while tightening
Collet Nut until hand tight.
• Tighten Collet Nut to 68 N/m (50 ft/lbs), using
Special Wrench (supplied).
Calculate torque setting for your torque wrench
using the following formula:
(50)(L)
TORQUE WRENCH SETTING (ft/lbs) = (L + 5.6)
Where L = effective length of torque wrench in inches.
(68)(L)
TORQUE WRENCH SETTING (N.m) = (L + .142)
Where L = effective length of torque wrench in meters.
9. Press (ENTER) when complete.
10. Continue with setup following instructions on
display screen and the manual packaged with your
machine.
NOTE
Sunnen MMT TURBOHONE Multi-Stone Tools come
fully assembled, including stones. Tool MUST be
returned to Sunnen for inspection and reloading of
stones.
