Terminology list
This manual will contain a number of technical terms. It is important to know what they mean before you begin
installing and configuring the router.
• Router:Thisistheproductyouhavejustbought.Arouteractsasaboundarybetweentwonetworks,WANandLAN.
• Networkcable.Anetworkcableisusedforconnectingnetworkdevicessuchascomputers,modemsandrouters.Youmayalreadyhavesucha
cable,thecableinthepackagecontentsisintendedtoconnecttheroutertoyourmodem.
• ISP:InternetServiceProvider,thisisthecompanythatsuppliesyouyourInternetconnection.
• Broadbandmodem:Fromhereon:modem.YourmodemisthedeviceyoualreadyhaveorthathasbeensuppliedtoyoubyyourISPthat
currentlyprovidesyourinternetconnection.ThetwomostcommonmodemtypesarecablemodemsandADSLmodems,butotherkindsof
modemsalsoexist.
• LAN:LANstandsfor“LocalAreaNetwork”,inthecaseofthisrouter,theLANconsistsofthefouryellowportsandthewirelessnetwork.Withthe
router,allyourcomputerswillformasingleLAN.
• WAN:WANstandsfor“WideAreaNetwork”,inmostcasesthismeanstheInternet.
• Wirelesssecurity:Bydefault,therouter’swirelessnetworkisnotsecured.Thismeansthatanyoneinrange(includingyourneighbours)can
connecttothenetworkanduseyourinternetconnection.Wirelesssecurityprotectsyournetworksothatonlyauthoriseddevicescangainaccess.
SweexrecommendsalluserstosecuretheirwirelessnetworkafterinstallationusingeithertheWPAorWPSmethodsexplainedfurtheroninthe

Installing the router
There are three ways of installing the router:
• TheInstallationWizardprogramincludedontheCD
• TheSimplesetupdescribedinthismanual
• TheAdvancedsetupalsodescribedinthismanual.
Thewizardandsimplesetupassumedefaultsettingsandwillworkformostusers.Ifyouareanadvanceduserorifyouknowwhichsetupmethod
yourISPrequires,youmayproceedtotheadvancedsetupimmediately.

Simple setup
Simple setup is done in 7 steps:
1. Disconnectthepowertoyourmodem.Ifoneormorecomputerswereconnectedtoyourmodemusinganetworkcable,disconnectthem.
2. UsetheincludednetworkcabletoconnectyourmodemtotheblueWANportoftherouter.Donotconnectanycomputersyet!
3. Connectthepowertoyourmodemandwaituntilitslightsindicatenormaloperation
4. Connectthepowertotherouter,andwait1minutetogivetheroutertimetostartupandconfigureitself.Thisisimportant!
5. Ifyouhaveanycomputersorotherdevicesthatwerealreadyconnectedbyanetworkcable,youcannowconnectthesecablestotheyellow
LANportsoftherouter.
6. Waitanotherminute.Yourrouterisnowinstalled!Wiredcomputersnowhaveinternetaccess,forwirelesscomputersoneadditionalstepis
required,followtheinstructionsbelowfortheWindowsversionyouhave.

Advanced setup
AdvancedsetupcanbedonewhenyouknowexactlywhichsettingsyourISPrequiresorwhenthesimplesetupfails.
Thereare6possibleconfigurations.Wehavelistedthemwithinstructionsonhowtoconfigurethem.Toknowwhichsettingmatchesthesettings
requiredbyyourISP,lookatthelistofprovidersfurtheroninthismanual.ThelistismadeoutofISP’sandtheircorrespondingservices.Behindeach
serviceislistedtherequiredsetting.

Checking if the router is successfully connected to the internet
Forconfigurations1–4,itispossibletocheckintherouterifyouhaveaworkinginternetconnection.Afterapplyingtheconfiguration,therouter
willprocessthechangesandtakeyoutothe“SystemStatus”page.Ifthisdoesnothappen,youcanclick“SystemStatus”inthemenuontheleft.

Configuration 1: DHCP with MAC address clone

Wireless network configuration
Itisrecommendedtoonlyadjustwirelesssettingsfromacomputerconnectedtotherouterbynetworkcable,especiallywhenchangingwireless
securitysettings.Thiswillpreventtheconnectionfrombeinglostifyouaccidentallyapplyincorrectsettings.
Toadjustthewirelessnetworkconfiguration,firstlogintotherouterasdescribedinthe“AdvancedSetup”chapter,thenclick“WirelessNetwork”in
themenuontheleftside.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:
SSID
ThemostimportantsettinginthisscreenistheSSID,thisisthenameofyourwirelessnetwork,usedforidentificationpurposes.WhenSSID
broadcastisenabled,youandeveryoneelseinrangeofyournetworkcanseethenameinthelistofavailablewirelessnetworks.
ItisrecommendedthatyouchangetheSSID,thedefaultSSID“SweexLW310V2”cancauseconflictsifmultipleroutersofthismodelareinrange
ofeachother.WhenchangingtheSSID,youwillneedtoconnecttoyourwirelessnetworkagainasdescribedinthechapter“Connectingtoa
wirelessnetwork”.
Channel
TheChannelsettingcontrolsthefrequencyonwhichtheroutertransmitsitswirelesssignal.Withthedefaultoption,“AutoSelect”,therouterwill
scanallchannelswhenpoweredupandautomaticallyselectthechannelwiththebestsignalconditions.Changingthechannelisonlyrecommended
whenyouexperiencepoorwirelessperformanceoftherouter.
Other settings
Thesesettingsareforexpertsonlyandnormallydonotneedtobechanged.Thedefaultsettingsprovideanoptimalmixbetweenperformanceand
compatibility.Thisalsoappliestotheadvancedsettingspageaccessibleinthemenuontheleft.

Afterchanginganyofthesettings,clickthe“Apply”buttontoapplythechanges.
Securing your wireless network
Wirelesssecurityprotectsyourwirelessnetworksothatonlyauthoriseddevicescangainaccess.Sweexrecommendsalluserstosecuretheirwireless
network.Securingyournetworkshouldonlybedoneafterinternetaccessthroughtherouterhassuccessfullybeensetup.
Therearethreemethodsforsecuringyourwirelessnetwork:
• WPA/WPA2isamanualmethodofsecuringyournetwork.Youconfigureasecuritykeyandonlydeviceswiththiskeycanaccessthenetwork.
Youhavetomanuallyenterthekeyineachdevicethatyouwanttograntaccess.WPAissupportedbyWindowsXPServicePack2andnewer
andbymostotherdevices.Itiscurrentlytherecommendedmethodforsecuringyourwirelessnetwork.WPA2isanupgradetoWPAandrequires
atleastWindowsXPServicePack3.
• WPSisbuiltontopofWPAandenablesautomaticconfigurationandexchangeofWPAkeysthroughaPINcodeorthesimplepushofabutton.
WPSissupportedbyWindowsVistaServicePack2andWindows7.UnderWindowsXP,WPSsupportisdependentonsoftwareorutilities
providedbythemanufacturerofyourwirelessnetworkadapter.
• Someolderdevices,from2005orbeforeandinsomecasesWindows98,ME,2000andolderWindowsXPversions(beforeServicePack2)
maynotsupportWPA,inthiscaseyouwillhavetofallbacktotheolderWEPmethodforwirelesssecurity.WEPisnotrecommendedfornormal
operationsinceitisnolongerconsideredfullysecurebytoday’sstandards.

Method 1: WPA
SecuringyournetworkwithWPAisdonein2steps:

PassPhrase:Hereyouhavetosetthesecuritykey(password)foryourwirelessnetwork.Thisshouldbeadifficulttoguesswordorphrase.The
minimumlengthforthepassphraseis8characters.Wealsorecommendyoutowritethepassphrasedownandstoreitneartherouter.Ifthe
passphraseislostyoupleaserefertothetroubleshootingsectionofthismanual.
2. Whenfinished,clickthe“Apply”button.Ifyouwereconnectedwirelessly,youwillnowobservethatyourconnectionislost.Followthesteps
describedinthe“Connectingtoawirelessnetwork”sectionofthemanualtoregainthe(nowsecure)connection.
Method 2: WPS
Forthismethodnoadditionalsettingsarerequired,simplypushtheWPSbuttonatthebackoftherouter.Afterafewseconds,theWPSlightatthe
frontoftherouterwillstarttoblink.Aslongasthelightblinks,youareabletoconnectyourWPSenableddevicetotherouter.Afterasuccessful
connection,theWPSlightwillstopblinking.ToconnectanotherWPSenableddevice,simplypushthebuttonagainbeforeconnecting.
AfteraWPSsecuredconnectionhasbeensetupforthefirsttime,allpreviouslyconnecteddeviceswilllosetheirconnection.Youwillhaveto
connectthemusingthesameWPSmethodorbymanuallyenteringtheWPAkeyasdescribedbelow.
Toconnectanon-WPSdevicetoaWPSsecuredrouter,click“WirelessNetwork”-“WPSSettings”inthemenuontheleftside,the“WPSKey
(ASCII)”istheWPAkeyyoucanuseforconnectingnon-WPSenableddevices.

Method 3: WEP

2. Whenfinished,clickthe“Apply”button.Ifyouwereconnectedwirelessly,youwillnowobservethatyourconnectionislost.Followthesteps
describedinthe“Connectingtoawirelessnetwork”sectionofthemanualtoregainthe(nowsecure)connection.
Advanced features
Inthischapterwewilldescribesomeoftheadvancedfeaturesintherouter.Thefollowingsectionsassumebasicknowledgeofcomputernetworking
technologyandterminology.
Static DHCP
Bydefault,therouterdynamicallyassignsIPaddressestoallconnecteddevicesthroughtheDHCPprotocol.Thisisthemostuser-friendlymethod
ofnetworkconfigurationbutitcanalsoleadtoIPaddressesthatchangeovertimeorwhenadevicereconnects.Incertaincasesthisisundesirable
behaviour,forexamplewhenyouuseportforwardingitisnecessaryforthedevice’sIPaddresstoremainconstant.Onepossiblesolutionisto
configureastaticIPaddressinthedeviceitselfbutthiscancauseproblemswhenyoualsousethedeviceonothernetworks.Anothersolutionisto
instructtheroutertoalwaysassignthesameIPaddresstothedevice.ThisiscalledstaticDHCPorDHCPaddressreservation.
TosetupstaticDHCPforadevice,logintotherouterasdescribedinthe“Advancedsetup”chapterandclick“DHCPServer”–“DHCPList&
Binding”inthemenuontheleft.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:

Port forwarding (virtual server) and DMZ setup
Forcertainapplications,devicesandservers,itmaybenecessarysosetupportforwardingforthemtooperateproperlybehindtherouter’sfirewall.
Thisisbecausebydefault,thefirewallblocksallincomingconnectionsandallowsonlyoutgoingconnections.Fortechnicalreasonsthebuilt-in
firewallisinherenttotheroutingfunctionandcannotbedisabledcompletely.
PortforwardinginstructstheroutertoacceptanincomingconnectiononacertainportandforwardittotheIPaddressofadeviceinyourlocal
network.PleasenotethatuseofthetermportinthischapterreferstoTCPorUDPportsandisnotrelatedtothephysicalWANandLANportsatthe
backoftherouter.
DMZisaspecialcaseofportforwardingwheretherouterisinstructedtoforwardallincomingconnectionstothespecifiedaddress.
Tosetupportforwarding,logintotherouterasdescribedinthe“Advancedsetup”chapterandclick“VirtualServer”–“PortRangeForwarding”in
themenuontheleft.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:
Toforwardasingleport,enterthedesiredportnumbertwiceinthefirstemptyrule,entertheIPaddressthattheportshouldbeforwardedtoand

Traffic Control
Trafficcontrolisalsoknownas“bandwidthmanagement”.Itallowsyoutoartificiallyrestrictbandwidthforoneormoredevicesonyournetwork.
Thiscanbeusefulwhen,forexample,youneedtoreservebandwidthforaVOIPphoneoryouwanttorestrictthebandwidthavailabletopeer-to-
peerapplications.
TosetupTrafficControl,logintotherouterasdescribedinthe“Advancedsetup”chapter,click“TrafficControl”inthemenuontheleftandcheckthe
“Enable”checkbox.Youwillseethefollowingscreen:
FirstentertheWANuploadbandwidthanddownloadbandwidthinkbps.Asarule,takethespeedsadvertisedbyyourISPandlowerthemby10%
oruseaspeedtestingwebsitetomeasureyourbandwidth,andlowertheoutcomeby5%.Nextyoucanstartcreatingrules.Enterthedesired
port(s)andprotocol(s)thattheruleshouldapplytoorselectapredefinedservuce,andsettheIPaddressofyourdeviceoranIPrangeformultiple
devicesandsetthedesiredguaranteedandmaximumbandwidth.Nextclickthe“Apply”checkboxandclickthe“Add”buttontoaddtherule.When
doneaddingrules,clickthe“Apply”button.
Note:Whenapplyingtrafficcontrolrulestoacertaindevice,itisadvisabletogiveitastaticDHCPIPaddressfirst.Otherwisethedevicemaychange

Client filtering
