The splitter
InordertoseparatetheADSLsignalfromthenormaltelephonesignal,youneedtouseasplitter.Thisenablesyouto
simultaneouslymakecallsandsurftheInternetusingthesametelephoneline.Thesignalcomesfromthewallsocketor
themetercupboardandentersthesplitter.Twotelephonecablesareconnectedtotheoutputofthesplitter.Oneleadsto
themodemandtheothertothetelephone.
Note! The ADSL modem does not include a splitter. It can be obtained from various DIY stores.
Connecting the Sweex ADSL 2 Modem
1.Connectthepoweradaptor(included)totherearofthemodemandthemainssocket.TheLEDunderPWRislit.In
theeventtheLEDisnotlit,checktheconnectionsofthepoweradaptortotheADSLmodemandthemainssocket.

2.Connectthetelephonecable(RJ-11)carryingtheADSLsignaltotheADSLportattherearofthemodem.TheLED
underADSLwillnowstarttoblink.Afterapproximately30secondstheLEDwillbelitcontinuously.Intheeventthe
LEDisnotlit,checkwhetherthesplitterisproperlyconnectedand/orwhethertheADSLlineisok.
3.Switchonthecomputerandconnectittotherearofthemodemusinganetworkcable(UTPRJ-45).Youcanselect
anyoftheports1,2,3and4.ThecorrespondingLEDatthefrontofthemodemwillbelit.IntheeventtheLED
failstolightup,checkwhetherthenetworkcableisproperlyconnectedtothecomputerandthemodem.
Configuring the computer to connect to the modem
Windows Vista
Inthebottomleftofyourscreen,goto“Start”(Start)‡“ControlPanel”(ControlPanel).
Clickon“Viewnetworkstatusandtasks”(Viewnetworkstatusandtasks).
Leftinthecolumn,clickon“Managenetworkconnections”(Managenetworkconnections).

Internet browser settings for Windows 98SE, 2000 and XP
1. Inordertoproperlyaccessthemodem,thebrowsersettingsmustbecorrect.Thisiseasytocheckbystartingup
InternetExplorerandselecting“Tools”(Tools)fromthemenubarandthenselectingtheoption“InternetOptions”
(InternetOptions).
2. Inthiswindow,goto“Connections”(Connections)andselect“Neverdialaconnection”(Neverdialaconnection)or
removeallconnectionslistedinthefieldabove.
3.Atthebottom,click“LANSettings”(LANSettings),removeallticksandclick“OK”(OK).
4.Restartthecomputer.
Setting the wireless network
How does it work?
Inordertocreateawirelessnetwork,youneedawirelessrouter,wirelessmodemorWiFiaccesspoint.Thewireless
router,modemoraccesspointtransmitsthewirelessnetwork.Thenameofthisnetwork,alsoreferredtoasSSID,
dependsonyourwirelessrouter,modemoraccesspointandoftendifferspermodelorbrand.Youcanoftendetermine
thenameyourselfandthusrecogniseyourownwirelessnetwork.
Protection
Youcouldcompareawirelessnetworktoradiosignals.However,therangeofawirelessnetworkathomeisnotasbig.
Yourhomewirelessnetworkoftenhasarangeof20to30metres.Thismeansthatneighboursandpassers-bytoocan
makeuseofyournetwork.AsaresulttheycangetawaywithsurfingonyourInternetconnection,andtheymaygain
accesstoyoursharedfoldersandfilesonyournetwork.Thatiswhyitisoftenrecommendedtosecureyourwireless
network.Thisprotectionissetuponthedevicetransmittingthenetwork.Inmostcasesthatisthewirelessrouter,
modemoraccesspoint.ByaddingaWEPorWPAprotectioncode,yousecurethenetwork.Thiscodeisalsoreferredto
asthenetworkkey.Enterthiscodeoneachcomputerthatwantstoconnecttothatsecurednetwork.Youcanonlybe
partofthatnetworkifyouenterthiscode.Ifyoudidnotenterthenetworkkeyintotherouterormodemyourself,ask
theinstaller,manufacturer,supplierorproviderforthiscode.

Connecting the computer to the wireless network
Inthebottomleftofyourscreen,goto“Start(Start)‡“ControlPanel”(ControlPanel).
Thengoto”NetworkandInternetConnections”(NetworkandInternetConnections).Open“NetworkConnections”

Selectthename(alsoreferredtoasSSID)“SweexMO300”byclickingitonce.Nowclick“Connect(Connect).Ifit
hassuccessfullyconnectedtothewirelessnetwork,thenotification“Connected”(Connected)appearsafteracoupleof
seconds.Younowhaveanactivewirelessnetwork.
Ifyoureceiveanotificationsayingthewirelessconnectioncannotbeconfiguredbecauseitismanagedbyanother
programme,disablethatsoftwareandstartagain.
Werecommendsecuringthewirelesspartofthemodem.Howtodothisisdescribedfurtherdowninthismanual.
Oncesecured,thenetworkwillshowas“SweexMO300”withamessagebelowdetailing“Security-enabledwireless
network”(Security-enabledwirelessnetwork).Whenconnectingtothissecurednetworkyouwillbepromptedforthe
“Networkkey”(Networkkey).Ifthenetworkkeyyouhaveenteredisincorrect,anotificationsaying"Limitedorno
networkconnection"appearsafteracoupleofseconds.Yourwirelessconnectionisnotsatisfactory.Re-connecttothe
wirelessnetworkandcheckthenetworkkey.
Ifyouchangesomethinginthewirelesssettingsofthemodemcausingyoutolosethewirelessconnection,then
completethesestepsagain.

Modem access (Login)
Openyourwebbrowser.Inthisexampleweuse‘InternetExplorer’.
ThestandardmodemIPaddressis:192.168.251.1.AnIPaddressisauniquenumberrequiredbyeachnetworkdevice,
includingacomputerormodem,inordertobeactivewithinthatnetwork.WithoutanIPaddressyouareunableto
makeconnectionswithinanetwork.
TypethemodemIPaddress192.168.251.1inthebrowseraddressbar.Youcannowaccessthemodem.
Themodemloginscreenappears.Fillouttheloginnameandthecorrespondingpassword.Thestandardloginis
“sweex”andthecorrespondingpasswordis“mysweex”.
Ifthisloginscreenfailstoappear,recheckthesettingsofyourInternetbrowserasdescribedabove.AlsochecktheIP
addressofyourcomputer.InthisIPaddress,onlythedigitsafterthelastdotmaydeviatefromtheIPaddressofthe
modem(e.g.:192.168.251.xxx).
Do this as follows:
Win2000/WinXP:Click“Start”(Start)–“Run”(Run)–Typecmd–pressENTER–Intheblackwindowtypeipconfig
–pressENTERandyourIPaddressisdisplayed.
Onceloggedin,themainscreenofthemodemappears.

Intheeventthatyourproviderhasnotbeenlisted,youcanenteralternativesettingsviathe“Config”option.Inordertoobtain
thesealternativesettings,contactyourInternetprovider.Inordertostorethesettingsclick“Apply”andthen“SaveAll”.
Thesesettingonlyhavetobeconfiguredonceintherouter.Thismeansthatnomatterhowmanycomputersyou
connecttotherouter,thefollowingsettingsonlyhavetobedoneononecomputer.Thisisbecausethesettingsarenot
storedonthecomputerbutontherouter.
Tothisend,gotothe“InternetConnectionWIzard”.Thefollowingscreenappears:
Click“StartWizard”.

Wealwaysrecommendsettingthemodemwithacomputerphysicallyconnectedwiththemodembymeansofacable.
Thisisbecauseyouwilllosethewirelessconnectionwiththemodemwhilestoringthesesettings.
Inthemainmenuclick“Advanced”andthen“Wireless”.

At“AccessPoint”youcanactivateordeactivatethewirelessnetwork.
ThestandardSSIDis“Sweex_MO300”.At“SSID”youhavethepossibilitytochangethis.Werecommendthatyou
neverchangethis,thiswayyoucanalwaysrecognizethemodem.
Securing the wireless network
SecuringthewirelessnetworkintheSweexWirelessBroadbandRouter300Mbpscanbedoneintwoways.Thetrusted
manualway(WEP,WPAandWPA2),whereyoudetermineandenteryourownnetworkkey,orwiththeWPS(WiFi
ProtectedSetup)function,wheretherouterandthecomputer“agree“onanetworkkeyanduseitautomaticallywith
onepushofabuttontosecurethenetwork.
Itisnotpossibletousebothwaysatthesametime.Therefore,ifyouhavecomputersthatdonotsupportWPSwe
recommendyouusetheWPAorWPA2security.
WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)
SecuringanetworkfastandeasyisdonewithWPS.Thisfunctiononlyworkswithcomputersthatuseawirelesscardor
USBdonglethatsupportsWPS.

1. BypressingtheWPSbuttonontherearsideoftherouterfor2secondsyoucanactivatetheWPSfunction.Thelight
willstarttoblink.
2. AwirelesscomputerthatsupportsWPScannowscanfortherouterandusetheautomaticallygeneratednetwork
key;thenetworkissecured.
Forfuturecomputersyouwanttoaddtothenetwork,followthesameprocedure.YoucanalsoreadaPINcodefrom

WPA and WPA2 security
Byscrollingdowninthe”Wireless”windowyoucansecurethewirelessnetwork.
ToactivateWPAsecurity,followthesesteps:
1. At“AuthenticationType”selecttheoption“WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK”
2. At“Pre-SharedKey”enterthenetworkkey.Youcanmakethisupyourselfanditcanbeanumbercombination
orapassword.
3. Press“Save”atthebottomofthepagetosavethesettings.
Themodemisnowsecured.Reconnectyourwirelesscomputer.
Opening ports in the modem (Port Forwarding and DMZ)
WeadviseyoutouseafixedIPaddressforthecomputersorconsolesthatyouopenportsfor.Sothatthesecomputers
alwayshavethesameIP-addresssimilartotheaddresstheyhaveintherouter.Itcanoccurthattheroutergivesadifferent
IP-addresstothecomputermakingtheforwardingorDMZassignmentinvalidforthatcomputer.

How do you give a computer a fixed IP-address
ThisisonlynecessaryforcomputersyouwanttoopenaportforusingtheForwardingorDMZfunction.Followthe
stepsinthechapter“Configurationcomputertoconnecttotherouter”.Insteadofselecting”ObtainanIPaddress
automatically”selectUsethefollowingIPaddress”.
InourexampletheIP-addressbeginswith(192.168.203.xxx).Aslastnumberenteranumberthatisunique
inyournetwork.Weadviceyoutochooseanumberbetween150and200.SoapossibleIP-addresscouldbe
(192.168.203.150).Thefollowingcomputerhas(192.168.203.151)etc.
As“Subnetmask”enter:255.255.255.0
Atboth“Defaultgateway”and“PreferredDNS-server”youentertheIP-addressyouusetologintotherouter.Inour
example:192.168.203.1
At“Alternative-DNS-server”youdonothavetoenteranything.
Click“OK”twicetosavethesettingsandclosethewindow.

offer.AllportsareopenedforthecomputerthatyouplaceintheDMZ.OnlyonecomputercanbeplacedintheDMZ.
Click“DMZ”.
1. ClickDMZ
2. Selecttheoption“Enabled”.
3. At“DMZHostIPAddress”entertheIP-addressofthecomputerforwhichtheportshavetobeopened.
4. Click“Save”.
Upgrading the modem firmware
Toupdatethemodemthesocalled‘firmware’hastobeupdated.Thiscanbedonebygoingto“SystemTools”inthe
menuandthen“firmware”.

Herethefirmwareofthemodemcanbeupdated.NewfirmwarecanbedownloadedfromtheSweexwebsiteunderthe
“Serviceandsupport”tab.WhenthefirmwarefileisaZIP-file,ensureyouunzipitandplaceitwhereyoucaneasily
finditagainonyourcomputer.
Thereafterclick“Browse”andselecttheunzippedfirmwarefile.Inmanycasesthenameofthefilewillendwith
“…firmware.ras”.
Tostartthefirmwareupdateclick“Upgrade”.
Donotinterruptthisprocedure.Themodemcanbedamagedbythis.Waitfortheupgradetobefinished.
Resetting the modem to the factory settings
ResettingtheSweexADSL2modemtothefactorysettingscanbedoneintwoways.
Important! Afterwards all settings that are required for your connection and network have to
be reconfigured.
Aftertheresetthemodemwillrestart.Duringtherestartthefactorysettingswillberestoredandthecomputerwill
loseitsconnectiontothemodemforapproximately30seconds.Afterthatthemodemisapproachablebythedefault
IP-address(192.168.203.1).
Way1:Atthebackofthemodemthereisaresetbutton.Useasmallitemtopressthebutton.
Holdthebuttonfor10seconds.
Way2:Inthemenuofthemodemgoto“SystemTools”.Click“Sysrestart”.
Choose“FactoryDefaultSettings”and“Restart”toconfirm.
