Tank Workshop SCHWERE PLATTFORMWAGON SSY 60TON User manual

TWS 353094 SCHWERE PLATTFORMWAGON
TYPE SSY 60TON
Congratulations on purchasing one of the finer aftermarket resin kits sets available.
The photo below is of the complete kit. The Panther tank is not inclu e with this kit. You will note
that we have broken the buil into several sub-assemblies. Please note each sub assembly will have it’s
own parts list as well as part numbers. So look over these instructions to get familiar with what will be
involve in the construction of this kit. You will also nee to have some a itional supplies to complete
this kit. You will nee some 5 minuet epoxy, woo glue an several rill bits. The rill bit numbers will
be calle out on the respective sub assemble. We also recommen you have a set of track to ai in the
truck assembly. Tank Workshop sells a three piece set of track TWS 354003. We can also recommen
Trumpeter's German Railway Track set kit #00213.
We recommen washing the parts in warm soapy water or a commercially available mol release
cleaner to remove any resi ual mol release agent. We also recommen leaving the parts on the
casting blocks until calle out for. Once the part is calle out for ry fit to make sure the parts fit
an align properly
Assembly
The first sub-assembly will be the frame of the car. Please reference the next page for the parts
list an the assembly steps. We recommen you use a square to make sure the frame is perfectly
square. You may use the provi e woo en eck to make sure you fit the frame together squarely.

Frame Sub-Assembly
1. Use the below line rawings as a reference to the basic layout of the frame. Join parts 1
an 2 together. Then join parts 3 to one set of the si e frame reference figure 1. Check to make
sure parts 3 are square to parts 1&2. Once you have checke this then glue the secon frame
set to parts 3. You now can test fit the woo ecking into the basic frame. The fit will be tight
an there shoul be no gaps on the si es or en s. Next test fit parts 4 to the locating bars on the
insi es of parts 1&2. Part 4 shoul rop right in without pushing the frame si es out. If this
happens then you’ll have 4 waves in your frame an the eck will have gaps. If you nee to trim
part 4 then note that you’ll nee to remove an equal amount from both si es so the truck
locating pin remains centere in the car. For example if you nee to remove a total of 4mm then
you must remove 2mm from either si e. See figure 2 for the complete frame.

1. Begin by installing parts 3 into the wheel axel support slots on parts 1. See figure 1 for
reference. Note that the flanges on part 3 will be on the back si e of part 1. Next install part
5 to the lower en of the wheel bearing box support slot. It shoul cover part 3. See figure
2. Next install part 8 to the top of part 5. The spring support en s shoul be glue to the
locating circles on part 1. Next install part 9 to the lower en of the bearing box.
2. Next you’ll nee to buil the brake support assemblies using parts 2 an 6. You’ll nee to
rill out part 6 at the locating hole using a #52 rill bit. Next using the .062” ro as a jig
you’ll nee to install two ro support arms onto the ro . NOTE THE ANGLE OF THE
SUPPORTS. See figure 3. Using this jig then glue part 6 to the locating slots on part 2. You
will nee to o this 8 times.
3. Next buil the axel using the 3/16” tubing. The length of the axel shoul be 5.8cm. Next
measure 4mm from both en s. This is the portion of the axels that will go into the bearing
boxes on the truck frames. Sli e two each of part 4 onto the axel. Cone en s facing each
other. Now sli e the wheels (10) on. The wheel shoul be set to the 4mm line. See figure 4

4. Next you will nee to assemble the truck. We recommen slow setting super glue for this step.
This is where a set of track becomes useful. Sli e the axel/wheel assembly into the bearing
boxes. Now set the assembly onto the rails an make sure it sits flat. If it sits flat isassemble
an then glue the axels into the bearing boxes while hol ing the assembly on the track. Now
install the brake support sub-assemblies to the en s of the truck frames. See figure 5. Once you
are happy with the set of the truck on the rails an the entire assembly is square then go ahea
an put some super glue accelerator on all the joints to spee up the slow setting super glue.
Now install the two remaining brake support sub-assemblies into the slots on the truck frames.
Some trimming may be necessary for these to sli e into place. See figure 5.
5. Now it’s time to install the brake pa s an ro s. Using the .062” ro cut 4.7cm lengths. Now
sli e into the support arms an glue the brake pa s to the en s. The pa s shoul sit away from
the wheels or you can a just them to be engage with the wheel showing the brakes applie .

Hitch/Bum er Assembly
1. Now we will assemble the bumpers an hitches to the car en s. Using figure 1 make the
appropriate measurements an then glue the calle out parts to the measurements. Before gluing
part 13 to the car en you will nee to rill out the top of the hook with a #60 rill bit at the
locator holes.

2. Next you will nee to rill out parts 6&11 using a #47 rill bit. This will allow the jack
screw to sli e into the blocks an the a just han le to sli e between the blocks. Now rill
out parts 10,12 an the other si e of part 6 using a #60 rill bit. I recommen you o the
rilling with the parts still attache to the casting block. Now assemble the hitch assembly
per figure 2.

Final Assembly
Now for final assembly. First you will nee to glue the upper an lower ecks together using a
woo glue or epoxy. Note the alignment of the bolt holes . The lower eck hole shoul be close
to the center of the upper eck hole. I recommen using a flat weight to ai in the two pieces
of ecking to ry flat together. NOTE: THE WOOD DECK MAY WARP IF NOT
WEIGHTED WHILE DRYING. At this time you can stain your eck if that is your esire
finish. After the ecks are ry install them into the car frames using a 5 minuet epoxy. I can’t
recommen super glue as a bon ing agent as I i not try this. So if using super glue use at
your own risk.
Once the ecking is secure you can install the trucks to the mounts on the frame. There shoul
be an air tank installe along the centerline of the lower eck between the two truck
assemblies. Use epoxy to attach this.
Final step woul be to install the rivets/bolts in the recesse bolt holes in the eck. You can
either trim the rivets/bolts to sit flush in the eck or you can rill out the lower eck holes
using a #63 rill bit. By oing this you can just cut the rivet off of it’s tree an sli e it in the
hole. No trimming require .
10
If you reference the hitch/bumper parts list you will note parts 15 an 16. Part 16 can be
installe on the eck as gui es to keep the loa e tank centere on the eck. These are
optional. Part 15 are woo en chocks use to chock the tank once on the eck.

Decals & Painting
Use the below figure to locate the ecals. Note if you are buil ing the Panther car please
reference the notes on the figure for the applicable car’s ecals.
For painting we recommen you browse the various railroa car colors at your local hobby
shop or on-line shop. These cars coul be painte several colors from a ark grey, black or even
re . Some may have even been camouflage . The ecking can be staine or painte . You can
use a wire brush to istress the woo an give it a worn, torn up look. Tank trea s were not
easy on this woo . Look for goo references to choose the colors. Even use mo ern ay rail cars
as reference.
