QPrecautions concerning batteries
Misuse of batteries could cause them to rupture or leak leading
to fire, injury or the staining of nearby things. Please read and
observe the following precautions carefully.
Be sure to insert the batteries with correct positive (o+) and
negative (_) orientations.
Use batteries of the same type. Never use different types ofo
batteries together.
If the remote control is not used for a long time (more than ao
month), remove the batteries to prevent them from leaking.
If the batteries leak, wipe away the leakage inside the batteryo
compartment and replace the batteries with new ones.
Do not use batteries of types other than those specified. Doo
not mix new batteries with old ones or use different types of
batteries together.
Do not heat or disassemble batteries. Never throw batteries intoo

Before use
Read this before attempting any operations.
CAUTION
Avoid placing the unit in direct sunlight or close to any source ofo
heat, such as radiators, heaters, open fireplaces, amplifiers, etc. Also
avoid locations that are subject to vibrations or exposed to exces-
sive dust, cold or moisture.
Place the unit in a stable location near the audio system that youo
will use.
Do not move the unit during playback.o
During playback, the disc rotates at high speed. Do not lift or move
the unit during playback. Doing so may damage the disc or the
unit.
Be careful to avoid injury when moving the unit due to its weight.o
Get someone to help you if necessary.
The voltage supplied to the unit should match the voltage aso
printed on the rear panel. If you are in any doubt regarding this
matter, consult an electrician.
As the unit may become warm during operation, always leaveo
sufficient space around the unit for ventilation. Make sure there is
at least 5 cm (2”) of space on each side of the unit. DO NOT place
anything such as a CD, CD-R, LP, cassette tape etc. on top of the
unit.
Do not open the cabinet as this might result in damage to theo
circuitry or cause electric shock. If a foreign object should get into
the unit, contact your dealer or service company.
When removing the power plug from the wall outlet, always pullo
directly on the plug, never yank on the cord.
Always remove the disc before relocating or moving this unit.o
Moving the unit with a disc inside could cause a malfunction.
Depending on the electromagnetic waves of television broadcasts,o
interference might appear on television screens when this unit’s
power is on. This does not indicate that this unit or the TV is mal-
functioning. If this occurs, turn this unit’s power off.
Maintenance
If the surface of the unit gets dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth or use
diluted mild liquid soap. Allow the surface of the unit to dry com-
pletely before using.
QFor safety, disconnect the power cord from the socket before
cleaning.
Never spray liquid directly on this unit.o
Do not use thinner or alcohol as they could damage the surface ofo
the unit.
Avoid allowing rubber or plastic materials to touch this product foro
long periods of time, because they could damage the cabinet.

CDs that bear the “COMPACT disc DIGITAL AUDIO” logo.

Linear PCM digital audioo
Audio CDs are divided into tracks.
Super Audio CDs that bear the “Super Audio CD” logo.
Single layer, dual layer or hybrid layero
12cm (4.7o") discs
Digital audio (DSD)o
Super Audio CDs are divided into tracks.
CD-R and CD-RW discs that have been correctly recorded
in the audio CD format (CD-DA) and finalized.
This unit can play these types of discs without an adapter. It cannot
play any other type of disc.
QPlayback of any other disc type could result in an unpleasant loud
noise, damage to the speakers as well as potential harm to your
hearing. Never play back any other type of disc.
The logo should be on the disc label or the CD jacket.o
DVDs, Video CDs, DVD-ROMs, CD-ROMs and similar types ofo
discs cannot be played on this unit.
Copy-protected discs and other discs that do not conform too
the CD standard might not play correctly in this player. If you
use such discs in this unit, ESOTERIC company and its subsidiar-
ies will not be responsible for any consequences or guarantee
the quality of reproduction. If you experience problems with
such non-standard discs, you should contact their issuers.
Discs created by a CD recorder must be finalized before useo
with this unit. If you are uncertain about the handling of a CD-R
or CD-RW disc, please contact the seller of the disc directly.
Depending on disc quality and recording conditions, playback of
some discs might not be possible. Please see the manual for the
device that you used to create the disc.

CAUTION
Do not play any disc that is warped, deformed or damaged.o
Playing such discs could cause irreparable harm to the playing
mechanisms.
While printable CD-R and CD-RW discs utilizing modern printingo
technologies are generally acceptable, older systems that use
adhesives to attach paper type labels to the disc surface are not
recommended.
Do not stick papers or protective sheets on the discs and do noto
use any protective coating sprays.
Never use a stabilizer. Using commercially available CD stabilizerso
with this unit will damage the mechanisms and cause them to
malfunction.
Do not use irregularly-shaped discs (octagonal, heart-shaped, busi-o
ness-card-size, etc.). CDs with these shapes could damage the unit.
Handling precautions
Always insert the disc into the disc tray with the label side up. Onlyo
one side of a Compact Disc can be played or used for recording.
To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center ofo
the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges.

Storage precautions
Discs should be returned to their cases after use to avoid dust ando
scratches that could cause the laser pickup to “skip.”
Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or high temperature ando
humidity for extended periods. Long exposure to high tempera-
tures will warp discs.
CD-R and CD-RW discs are more sensitive to the effects of heat ando
ultraviolet rays than ordinary CDs. It is important that they are not
stored in locations where they will be exposed to direct sunlight.
They should also be kept away from sources of heat, such as radia-
tors and heat-generating electrical devices.
Maintenance
If a disc becomes dirty, wipe its surface radially from the centero
hole outward towards the outer edge with a soft, dry cloth.
Never clean discs using chemicals such as record sprays, antistatico
sprays and fluids, and thinner. Such chemicals will do irreparable
damage to the disc’s plastic surface.
If you are in any doubt as to the care and handling of a disc, read the
precautions supplied with the disc or contact the disc manufacturer.

Remote control unit
The included remote control allows this unit to be operated from a
distance.
Point the remote control unit at the main unit’s remote sensor
within 23 feet/7 meters of the main unit.

Depending on the angle, reception might be difficult. Use theo
remote control from directly in front of the unit as much as possible.
Even if the remote control unit is used within its effective range,o
operation by remote control might be impossible if there are any
obstacles between the unit and the remote control.
If direct sunlight or strong artificial illumination shines on theo
remote sensor, the remote control might not function.
If the remote control unit is operated near other devices that gen-o
erate infrared rays, or if other remote controls that use infrared rays
are operated near the unit, this unit might operate incorrectly. The
other devices might also operate incorrectly.
Battery Installation
Remove the cover from the back of the remote control and insert
two AAA batteries with their ¥/^oriented as shown in the case.
Replace the cover.
Battery Replacement
If the operating range required between the remote control unit and
main unit decreases, the batteries are exhausted. In this case, replace
the batteries with new ones.

your local government, your waste disposal service or the point of
sale where you purchased the collection.

ADigital audio output connectors
The DIGITAL OUTPUT connectors will send a digital audio signal
from CDs played on this unit.
Connect a digital audio output connector (COAXIAL or OPTICAL)
to the digital audio input connector of an amplifier or digital
recording device (e.g. CD recorder).
Use commercially available cables for connections.
COAXIAL: RCA digital cable
OPTICAL: optical digital cable (TOS)
These connectors cannot output Super Audio CD digital audio.o
Digital output can be turned on or off (see p.27).o
BUSB input connector
Used to input digital audio from a computer. Connect it to a com-
puter's USB connector.
Use a commercially available USB cable for connection.
Before connecting, read the cautions on pages 22–23.o
CDigital audio input connectors
Used to input digital audio signals. They can be connected to the
digital output connectors of appropriate audio devices.
They can receive up to 24-bit signals with sampling frequencies
of 32–192 kHz.
Use commercially available cables for connections.
COAXIAL: RCA coaxial digital cable
OPTICAL: optical digital cable (TOS)
DAnalog audio output connectors
These output 2-channel analog audio. Connect the XLR or RCA
connectors to an amplifier.
Use commercially available cables for connections.
XLR: balanced XLR cables
RCA: RCA audio cables
Connect this unit's R connector to the R connector of the amplifier,
and its L connector to the L connector of the amplifier.
o Analog audio output can be set to either the RCA or XLR connectors
(the XLR polarity can be set for pin 2 or 3 HOT) or OFF (see p.27).
When the XLR connector is selected, the output level can also beo
set (see p.27).
If distortion occurs when the output level is set to +6 dB, set it to
0 dB.
EClock sync input connector
Used to input an external clock signal.
Connect the clock sync input connector to the output connector
of a master clock generator.

Use a commercially available BNC coaxial cable for connection.
FGround connector [SIGNAL GND]
The audio quality may sometimes be improved by connecting
this ground connector to an amplifier or other audio device that
is connected to this unit.
This is not a safety ground.o
GAC power inlet
Connect the included power cord to this inlet.
After all other connections have been completed, connect the
power plug to the AC power outlet.
QDo not use any power cord other than an authentic Esoteric
product. Doing so could cause fire or electric shock.
When the unit is not used for an extended period of time,
disconnect the power plug from the outlet.
At Esoteric, we use Esoteric MEXCEL stressfree 8N/7N cables
for reference. The following types of cables in the Esoteric MEXCEL
cable series are available for purchase.

APOWER button
Press to turn the power on and off.
When the power is on, the ring around the button lights blue.
When the power is off, the ring is unlit.
When not using the unit, turn its power off.
BCLOCK indicator
This shows the clock sync status.
The indicator flashes when a signal is input through the clock
sync input connector and stays lit when locked.
CMODE button
Press when stopped to select disc playback or an external input
as the source. When set to external input, the unit can be used as
a D/A converter (see p.21).
Press and hold for 2 or more seconds to change to setting mode
(see p.24).
DRemote control signal receiver
This receives signals from the remote control. When using the
remote control, point the end of it toward this receiver panel (see
p.9).
EDisc tray
Load a disc for playback here (see p.16).
FDisplay
This shows playback time, track number and other information
(see p.13).

Press to open and close the disc tray.
HSTOP button
Press to stop playback (see p.17).
Press and hold when stopped for more than 2 seconds to change
the playback area of a Super Audio CD (see p.17).
Press while in setting mode to finish making settings. The CD sta-
tus message appears on the display. (see p.24).
IPLAY button
Press to start disc playback (see p.16).
During playback, the PLAY indicator lights.
JPAUSE button
Press to pause playback (see p.17).
When paused, the PLAY indicator flashes.
KSkip buttons (.//)
Skip forward or backward.
During playback, press and hold for 1 or more seconds to search
forward/backward. Press and hold repeatedly for 1 or more sec-
onds to change the search speed between 3 levels (see p.18).
Use these when in setting mode to change parameters (see p.24).

This shows the type of disc that is loaded.
Super Audio CD: SACD
Standard audio CD: CD
If a DVD-Video (DVD-V), DVD-Audio (DVD-A) or video CD (VCD)o
is loaded, the indicator will light, but the disc cannot be played
back.
bRepeat indicator ( )
This appears during repeat playback (see p.19)
cSETUP indicator
This appears when in setting mode (see p.24).

This shows the playback time and a variety of messages.
eDOWN MIX indicator
When playing back the multichannel audio of a Super Audio CD,
it is downmixed and output as stereo audio (2 channels). The
DOWN MIX indicator lights at such times.
fChannel indicator
L and R light during stereo audio (2-channel) playback.
During multichannel audio playback, the indicators that correspond
to the recorded channels light.

When the main unit and the remote control both have buttons
with the same functions, this manual explains how to use the but-
ton on the main unit. The corresponding remote control button
can be used in the same manner.

JSkip buttons (.//)
Press to skip to the previous or next track.
Press and hold for at least one second during playback to scan
forward/backward. Repeatedly press and hold for more than one
second to change the forward/backward scan speed to one of
three levels (see p.18).
They are also used when in setting mode to change parameters
(see p.24).
KStop button (H)
Press to stop playback (see p.17).
LPlay/Pause button (y/J)
Press when stopped or paused to start playback (see p.16).
Press during playback to pause (see p.17).
MVOLUME buttons (+/-)
When the attenuator function has been turned on in setting
mode, these can be used to adjust the volume (see p.29).
Use these to adjust the volume of an Esoteric amplifier.
NMUTE button
When the attenuator function has been turned on in setting
mode, use to temporarily mute the output (see p.29).
Use to mute an Esoteric amplifier.
ASTANDBY/ON button
This button is not used with this unit.
BNumber buttons
Use to select tracks.
CREPEAT button
Use with repeat playback (see p.19).
Press and hold to enter program mode (see p.19).
DPLAY AREA button
Press when stopped to change the Super Audio CD playback
area (see p.17).
EINPUT buttons (k/j)
When stopped, press these buttons to switch between disc play-
back and external input sources. When set to external input, the
unit can be used as a D/A converter (see p.21).
Use this to change the input of an Esoteric amplifier.
FSETUP button
If the attenuator function has been set to ON, pressing this but-
ton enters setting mode. This has the same function as pressing

4Press the OPEN/CLOSE button.
The disc tray will close. Be careful not to let a finger or any item
get caught in it.
Disc-loading may take some time depending on the amount ofo
information on the disc being loaded.
When the disc is loaded, the type of disc, the number of tracks
it contains and the total time of those tracks will appear on the
display (see p.13).
5Press the PLAY button.
Playback will start.
During playback, the PLAY indicator will light blue.

The ring around the POWER button lights blue.

The disc tray opens forward.
3Place a disc on the center of the tray with its
labeled-side up.
If you close the tray when the disc is not within the centralo
guides, the disc could become stuck inside and you might not be
able to reopen the tray. For this reason, you should always place
the disc carefully within the central guides.

Pausing playback
During playback, press the PAUSE button to pause playback. When
paused, the PLAY indicator on the main unit flashes.
Press the PLAY button or press the PAUSE button again to restart
playback.
Stopping playback
Press the STOP button to stop playback.
Opening and closing the disc tray
Press the OPEN/CLOSE button once to open the tray, and press it
again to close the tray.
If you press the OPEN/CLOSE button during disc playback, several o
seconds will pass before the tray opens.
Changing the playback area
Some Super Audio CDs have multiple areas, including stereo
(2-channel) and multichannel. Hybrid Super Audio CDs have two
layers with one containing ordinary CD-quality audio.
Press the STOP button for 2 or more seconds when the unit is
stopped to change the playback area.
To change the playback area using the remote control, press theo
PLAY AREA button when the unit is stopped.

Selecting tracks
Skipping
During playback, press a skip button (.//) on the main unit
or the remote control to skip to the previous or next track and start
playback.
Press theo.button once to return to the beginning of the track
that is currently playing. Press the .button repeatedly to skip
to an earlier track.
If you press the .button when still within the first second of a
track, however, you will skip to the previous track.
When stopped or paused, press a skip button (o.//) to pause
at the beginning of the selected track.
Using the number buttons to select and play
tracks
During playback or when stopped, press the number buttons to
select a track and start its playback.

Searching forward/backward (scanning)
To scan forward/backward, press and hold the skip (.//)
button on the main unit or the remote control (for more than one
second) during playback. When you find the point where you want
to listen, press the PLAY (y) button on the main unit or the play/
pause (y/J) button on the remote control.
Repeatedly press and hold a skip (.//) button for more than
one second to change the forward/backward scan speed to one of
three levels.
The speed that the < or > flashes on the display also changes.

During playback, press the REPEAT button to cycle through the following
repeat modes.
REPEAT TRK
(repeat one track)
REPEAT DSC
(repeat disc)
REPEAT OFF
(ordinary playback)
REPEAT TRK
Repeats playback of the currently playing track. During repeat
playback, if you select a different track, that track will begin playing
back repeatedly.
REPEAT DSC
Repeats playback of all the tracks on the currently playing disc.
Stopping playback disables repeat playback.o
You can program up to 30 tracks in the order that you want to listen
to them.

If you created the program during playback, you do not need too
press the play/pause button (y/J).
Adding a track to the end of the program
When stopped or during playback, use the number buttons to
select the number of the track that you want to add.
Clearing the contents of the program and return-
ing to ordinary playback
When stopped or during playback, press the REPEAT button to end
program mode. Press the REPEAT button during program playback
to resume ordinary playback from then on.
This will clear the program contents.o
In addition, when stopped or during playback, if you press the
OPEN/CLOSE button (L) or main unit power button, the program
contents will also be cleared.
