Safety Precautions
Thank you for purchasing this ES series cold storage equipment.
Before you first use this laboratory Freezer please carry out the following actions:
•Check that the Freezer has not been damaged in any way during transportation.
•If any damage is found it must be reported to your local dealer immediately.
•Ensure all packaging has beenremoved,includingcardboard, polystyrene and any tape used to hold
shelves in place for transportation.
•The Freezer has been cleaned prior todispatch; however, we advise that it should be cleaned using lukewarm
water containing a mild detergentand a soft cloth.
•We recommend that the Freezer should be left in an upright position for 24 hours prior to switching on.
•This equipment is not intended for use by persons (including children)with reduced physical, sensory
or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they havebeen given supervision
orinstruction concerning use of the equipmentby aperson responsible for their safety.
In this manual, the following symbols and conventions are used: -

General Recommendations
Intended Use and Special Warning
This equipment is tested in compliance with established regulations and then shipped ready for use. This
equipment is intended for general purpose cold storage and is not to be used in the presence of explosive gases
or mixtures and/or close to sources with high magnetic or electric fields.
WARNING: These units are not medical
devices and have not been registered with a
medical device regulatory body (e.g.
MDD/MDR). These products have not been
evaluated for the storage of samples for
diagnostic use, nor for samples to be re-
introduced into the body. AEV and AEW
models are not intended for flammable
material storage. Only AXV & AXW models
are intended for flammable material storage.
If the equipmentis used in a manner not
specified by the manufacturer, the protection
provided by the equipmentmay be impaired.

Energy Saving Tips
This equipment is cooled by energy efficient R600a refrigerant.
To keep running costs as low as possible always:
•Position the equipment away from heat sources.
•Make sure the air can circulate freely around the equipment, don’t block ventilation grid
•Ensure that products being stored are below room
temperature upon entry.
•Make sure the door is opened as little as possible while in
use and closed as quickly as possible to prevent
unnecessary temperature fluctuations.
Important Information
The freezer contains environment-friendly, non-ozone depleting refrigerant R600a. As R600a is a flammable gas, it
is important to avoid damage to the refrigeration circuit during transport and installation.If the refrigeration circuit is
damaged,avoid using a naked flame in the vicinity of the freezer and connecting power to the freezer. Also make
sure there is good ventilation in the room. If you are in doubt, please
contact your supplier.

Product Specifications
This freezer has been designed and built with the intention of the product being used within a laboratory
and is designed to store contents between -18 °C and -25°C (-0.4°F and -13°F).
Please see below for specific product information.
Flammable Material Storage Units (FMS):
Conventional freezers are not suitable for storing flammablematerials.Such unitshave components in their electrical
and refrigeration systems that can trigger explosions of flammable air-vapormixtures inside the unit.
FMS refrigerators/freezers are designed for use in locationswhich are not classifiedas hazardous by the Authority
Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Under normal operating conditions, the build-up or presence of
flammable vapours will not occurin the environment outside the unit.
Flammable Materials Storage (FMS) refrigerators/freezers are designed for useingeneral laboratorylocations.
FMS units are NOT designed for use in Class I, Zone 0, or Zone1 applications, which require an Explosion-Proof
Refrigerator/Freezer. FMS units are designed, evaluated and comply with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU Annex VIII.
These units have an intrinsically safe (IS) barrier installed in the temperature probe circuit with no other internal
electrical components that could trigger an explosion or fire of flammable materials inside the unit. The internal wall
construction has been reviewed and is not a source for electrostatic build up due to the materials used in
construction.
The units bear the following ATEX marking.
These units are ideal for storing ethyl ether, acetone, alcohol, benzene, butane, gasoline, hexane, lacquer solvent, and
naphtha along with many other potentially flammable materials.
Refrigerators, Freezers and Fridge Freezers for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, the internal refrigeration
chamber is classed as Zone 2, category 3 when the door is closed.
The external parts of the Freezer areclassed as safe area and as such do not need to complywith requirements of
the directive.

Installation
Positioning and Safely using the Freezer
WARNING: To reduce the risk of the unit
falling over, do not tip beyond 10 degrees
•Make sure the equipmentisplaced in a dry, well
ventilated site, away from heat sources.
•The equipment must beplaced on a level surface. If
necessary, adjust the feet on the product so the
equipment remains level during operation.
•The equipment should have enough clearance
around it to provide adequate ventilation –10cm at
each side, 6cm at the rear and 2.5cm at the top.
•Before ANYmaintenance activity, pull the plug out
of the socket bygripping the plug,DO NOT pull on
the plug cord.
•DO NOT use extension cords.
•If the main power supply cord is damaged, it should
be replaced by a qualified service engineer.
•DONOT attempt any repairs to the equipment
yourself (apart from those highlighted in the
Maintenance and Service Section). Repairs carried
out by someone without the relevant training are
putting their personal safety at risk and will
invalidate your warranty.
•Do not storeexplosive substances such as aerosol
cans with a flammable propellantin this equipment.
WARNING: This equipment is only to be
operated by authorized personnel or
personnel who have correct knowledge on
how the equipment operates.
•Use this product only in the way described in the
product literature and in this manual. Before
using it, verify that this product is suitable for its
intended use. If the equipment is used in a
manner not specified by the manufacturer, the
protection provided by the equipment may be
impaired.
•DONOT modify system components, especially
the controller.Use Thermo Scientific exact
replacement equipment or parts. Before use,
confirm that the product has not been altered in
anyway
•Your unit must be properly grounded in
conformity with national and local electrical
codes. Never connect the unit to overloaded
power sources.
•Disconnect the unit from all power sources
before cleaning, troubleshooting, or
performing other maintenance on the
product or its controls.
Transporting and Moving
the Freezer
The Freezer must always be moved in the vertical
position. The cabinet must not be tilted any more than
10°. If the cabinet is tilted more than 10°, the power
supply must not be connected until the equipment has
stood upright for at least 24 hours. Necessary equipment
to move the product is to be arranged by the user.
Electrical Connection
The equipment is intended for connection to alternating
current. The connection valuesfor voltage (V) and
frequency (Hz) aredeclared on the name plate in the
cabinet. Powermust be connected via a wall socket with
a switch. It is strongly recommended that the wall socket
is easily accessible. All earthing requirements stipulated
by the local electricity authority. The cabinet plug and wall
socket should give correct earthing. If in doubt, contact
your local supplier or an authorized electrician.
THISEQUIPMENT MUSTBE EARTHED.
If the supply cord is damaged, itmust be replaced by the
manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified
persons in order to avoid a hazard.
The flexible cord (mains lead) fitted to this equipment
has three cores for use with a 3-pin 13-amp plug. If a
BS 1363 (13-amp) fused plug is used it should be fitted
with a 13-amp fuse. The cores in the mains lead are
colored in accordance with the following code:
GREENAND YELLOW:EARTH
BLUE:NEUTRAL
BROWN:LIVE
These colors might not correspondwith the color
markings identifying the terminals in your plug.

Note:
First Connection to the mains.
The equipment provides information about the higher temperature (Hi alarm) till the moment of cooling.
The alarm is signalized by a sound signal and “Hi” caption on the display. Tomute the alarm, press button.
Until the moment of cooling, the alarm is repeated every 15 minutes. Such an operating mode is normal until the
required temperature settings are reached.

-Pressed for 5 seconds performs a reset of both the Air and Load
maximum and minimum temperatures.
Light
(if applicable)
-Press to turn on the light. (if applicable i.e. light fitted)
-It will stay on for 30 seconds and will go off automatically after this
time.
Mute/ Alarm
-Press to Mute the alarm buzzer
-Pressed for 5 seconds. Parameters class “F” (frequent) are accessed.
-Pressed with SERVICE for 5 seconds, parameters class “C”
(configuration) are accessed.
-Pressed with ENTER for 5 seconds, locks and unlocks the controller.
Set/Enter
-Confirms the selected value/function.
-Pressed with SERVICE for 5 seconds, turns ON and OFF the
controller
-Shows the second compartment temperature in a Fridge/Freezer.

To set the running temperature for either AIR / LOAD temperatures:
Press the button to switchbetween AIR and LOAD Temperatures.

Viewing & resetting minimum and maximum temperatures
The recording of the MAX and MIN temperatures is both for air temperature and load temperature.This feature saves the
maximum and minimum values read by the probes since lastreset.
Pressing or buttons will show Max or Min temperature.
The temperature will be relative to the showed running temperature AIR or LOAD.
Press Min/Max (mode denoted A/L symbol)
MAX: Display shows - “HI” for 2 seconds > Display shows Temperature for 2 seconds.
MIN: Display shows - “LO” for 2 seconds > Display shows Temperature for 2 seconds.
See example of display below:
To reset both AIR and LOAD minimum and maximum values.
Press and hold the
button for 5 seconds until you hear a beep.
Thiswill reset all the minimum and maximum values forboth AIR and LOAD atthe
same time.The display will then revert to the currentpre-setrunning temperature.

(The set point is the point at which the Freezer normally holds the temperature at; in rare circumstances such as high/low
room temperatures it may be necessary to adjust thisslightly.

Changing the Remote Alarm Contact
Follow this to change the alarm relay contact type.
There are two types –NC (normally closed) orNO(normally open)

Lock / Unlock Controller
To lock the control panel, press the buttons simultaneously on the controller for 5 seconds (display
shows “LOC”). Once completed thebuttons can still bepressed but they will haveno effect.
To unlock press the buttons simultaneously on the controller for 5 seconds (display shows “UNL”) and
the buttons can now be operated as normal.

Warning Alarms
Note: When a unit is first plugged-in and powered on,the High Alarm will sound during the initial pull-down to temperature
set-point.Press the alarm mute button to silence the alarm during pull down.
This Freezer has been designed to provide both an audible and visual alarm should any of the following situations occur:
-
•Door is left open for a set period.
•Internal air temperature goes outside the set parameters, either too high or too low.
•Internal ‘load’ temperature goes outside the set parameters, either too high or too low.
•Should one of these alarms occur this can be muted by pressing on the controller.
The ‘load’ temperature is a simulated temperature which is intended to provide an indication of the temperature of the
freezer’s contents (e.g. a 5ml sample). The temperature of a freezer’s contents will change more slowly (up or down) than
the air temperature within that freezershould there be a fault, or the door isleft open.
HI: High Temperature Reading

Remote Alarm Contacts
All ES Series laboratory freezers include remote alarm contacts and these terminal contacts enable the user to
connect to a remote-control station; these contacts can be found on the rear ofthe cabinet and are different for
98L and 232L as shown.
Remote Alarm Principle of operation
The remotealarm function of this appliance has been designed to go “OPEN CIRUIT” in the event of any of the alarm
conditions listed in the table below

Access Port
All ES units are provided with an access port located: -
232L Models located centrally on the left-hand side of the unit.
98L Models located in the bottom left hand corner –viewed from the front of the unit.
Note: Themanufacturer recommends keeping the access portcap and plug in place when the access port isnot in use.
IMPORTANT NOTE: These units are intended for General Purpose Cold storage. In case critical
samples are stored, we recommend the use of an independenttemperature monitoring system
which continuously monitors freezer performance.
