Section 1 Set-Up
Installation and start-up must be performed by Thermo approved
personnel only. s
The distance between the condensing unit and the blast freezer can be no
more than 100 equivalent feet (includes tubing, elbows, traps, etc.).

Section 2 Operation
The electronic temperature controller provides a constant display of the
freezer’s temperature. The numerical LED display provides readout of the
actual freezer chamber temperature in increments of 1°C.
The numerical LED display indicates the temperature setpoint when the
Press-To-Set button is pressed. To adjust the temperature setpoint, press
the Press-To-Set button and adjust the setpoint setscrew, using the
adjustment screwdriver shipped with the operating manual.
The temperature controller board controls power to the compressor and
the cooling fan. The temperature controller must be set and maintained
within the normal temperature specifications of 0°C to -50°C.
Adjustment of the temperature controller below the normal temperature
specification (-50°C) will void the warranty. s

Operation
A small screwdriver, shipped with the operating manual, is provided for
setting the temperature setpoint.
The blower control system consists of a door interlock switch and a
thermostat. The thermostat prevents the blower from operating until the
refrigeration coil temperature reaches approximately 5°C to prevent warm
air from circulating in the freezer.
The momentary door switch shuts off power to the cabinet blower during
door openings.
The Mode Select switch has three positions; ON, OFF and DEFROST.
When the switch is set to ON, power is applied to the refrigeration system
and the refrigeration indicator lights. The freezer will reach -50°C in about
20 minutes (with a pre-cooled cabinet).
When the switch is set to OFF (center), all freezer circuits are de-energized.
When the switch is in the DEFROST position, the defrost indicator lights
and the circulation blower activates. The freezer will warm to room
temperature. The door should be left open during defrost operation.
Note When the freezer reaches approximately 5°C, the blower turns off.
The defrost indicator remains on whenever the mode switch is in the
defrost position. s

Important The following paragraphs detail the installation of the freezer
drawers, including placement of their contents, into the unit for optimum
airflow and freeze time, based on manufacturer testing. s
Eleven drawers are included with each freezer. The baskets in the drawers
have been staggered to allow maximum airflow to freeze product quickly.
Six drawers have the basket on the left side as indicated below and five
drawers have the basket on the right. The drawers should be installed
alternately, as shown in Figure 2-2.
For quick and even freezing of bags placed in the drawers, there should be
only a single layer in each drawer; no overlapping (9 single unit bags
[500ml] per drawer). This allows airflow to reach each bag in its entirety.

Caution For optimum freezing time, all product should be placed in the
freezer. The door should remain closed.
If additional product is loaded during the freezing process, freeze time will
be lengthened and there may be frost build-up. s

Proper defrosting is a critical factor in the proper operation of the freezer.
Defrosting times will be determined by ambient conditions, door opening
frequency, usage and load.
If the freezer is to be used for continuous ‘blasting’, it must be defrosted at
the end of each 8 hour shift, or more frequently if frequent door openings,
ambient conditions, or heavy product load create the need.
1. To begin the defrost process, first remove all product to a storage
location.
2. Turn Power switch to Defrost. The Defrost light stays on (amber).
3. Allow the door to remain open at least 90°. Just opening the door a
small amount makes defrosting a lengthy process.
4. The time needed for the defrost process is dependent on the amount of
frost/ice and the ambient temperature.
5. After all frost has melted, wipe the cabinet dry. A general purpose
disinfectant can be used, if desired. Follow directions on disinfectant
for rinsing requirements. The drawers can be removed for cleaning
purposes, if desired.
6. The drain tube can also be flushed with a disinfectant. The inside drain
is shown in Figure 2-3. A hose can be attached to the drain outlet
(Figure 2-4) on the back of the unit. Route to a drain or bucket large
enough to catch all liquid.

Section 3 Routine Maintenance
De-energize all potential sources of energy to this unit and lockout/tagout
their controls. s
(Air cooled units only) The condenser should be cleaned as often as
necessary to ensure efficient compressor operation. A minimum of twice a
year is recommended.
The efficiency of the refrigeration unit is directly related to the temperature
of the air entering the air-cooled condenser. Dust in the condenser fins
slows the rate of heat dissipation and increases compressor operating
temperature (also decreasing compressor life). A dirty condenser will
reduce the overall performance of the refrigeration system in terms of
recovery time and set point control accuracy and may ultimately cause
compressor failure.

Service must be performed by experienced refrigeration service personnel
only. s
If the unit malfunctions, check all electrical components on the
compressor first:
• Starting relays
• Thermal protectors
• Starting capacitors
After checking the electrical components, check the refrigeration system.
EPA regulations require that refrigerant, evacuated from the refrigeration
system, must be recovered using an EPA approved recovery unit (USA). s
