Awideareanetwork(WAN)isanetworkthatcoversa
broadarea.Theworld'smostpopularWANisthe
Internet.
Inacommonlyusedsetup,theWANportofanaccess
pointconnectstoamodemviaanEthernetcable.A
modemcanbeacable,digitalsubscriberline(DSL),or
fiberopticmodem.Amodemtranslatesthesignal
fromtheinternetserviceprovider(ISP)toEthernet
signalsthattheaccesspointcanunderstand.This
allowstheaccesspointtohaveinternetconnection.
Otherdevicescalledstationsconnectwirelesslyto
thisaccesspoint.ThesedevicescanbeotherAltum
radios,mobilephones,printers,IPcameras,laptops.
Thestationsobtaininternetconnectionfromthe
accesspoint.
AnaccesspointWDSandastationWDStogether
extendthewirelesscoverage,likearepeater.More

TheInternetbrowsermaycachewebpages,sotobe
sure,onemayperformanInternetsearchofa
randomstringofnumbers.Ifthesearchresultsare
returned,thismeansthattheInternetconnectionis
workingfine.
