INTRODUCTION
The UBI Stand-Alone Concept is a ready-to-use
label printing program for the EasyCoder 101 SA
andtheEasyCoder201IISAdirectthermalprinters,
theEasyCoder501SAdirectthermal/thermaltrans-
ferprinterandthecorrespondingEasyPakmodels.
UtilizingtheflexibleUBIFingerprint4.0program-
ming language, the UBI Stand-Alone Concept of-
fers the printing of labels, tickets, tags or strip with
variouslayoutsandfixedorvariableinformationin
the form of text, bar codes, images, lines, boxes,
counters, time and dates.
The UBI Stand-Alone Program is easy to use and
requires no previous knowledge in programming.
The operator controls the printing via the built-in
membrane keyboard, an external alpha-numeric
ASCII keyboard, or a scanner, by responding to
prompts in the printer's display window.
Being completely self-contained, the printer only
needs a power supply. No computer connection is
necessary, although the printer is prepared for the
transferring of labels and layouts to, or from, a
personalcomputer,acomputernetwork or another
printer.
This version of the UBI Stand-Alone Concept is
compatible with the UBI LabelShop label-editing
programforMicrosoftWindows3.1.InUBILabel-
Shop, labels and layouts can easily be produced
thanks to the WYSIWYG presentation. Then you
canthentemporarily“dock”yourUBIStand-Alone
printertothecomputeranddownloadthelabelsand
layouts,before returningtoindependentoperation.
The EasyCoder 101 SA and EasyCoder 201 II SA
bothcome in twoversionswitheithera 6dots/mm
printhead for accurate EAN/UPC bar code print-
ing, or an 8 dots/mm printhead for increased leg-
ibilityandbetterreproductionofpicturesandlogo-
types. TheEasyCoder 501 SA is available with an
8 dots/mm printhead, or an 11.81 dots/mm print-
head with suberb resolution.
Depending on printer model, a large number of
options can be installed, including paper cutter,
memorycardadapter,interfaceboards,andvarious
types of paper handling equipment. Please refer to
the Technical Description for the printer model in
question for further information.

HOWTO USETHIS MANUAL
This manual is intended to contain all information
necessary for installing and programming a UBI
Stand-Alone printer without any assistance from
the distributor.
Sincesomeinformationisparticularforeachprinter
model, this manual is supplemented by the User's
Manual and the Technical Description for the
printer model in question.
Being designed to fulfil the demands of many
different applications, the UBI Stand-Alone Con-
ceptcontainsalotoffunctions,someofwhichmay
not be of immediate interest to you. Furthermore,
the printer's operator may not be concerned with
otherfunctionsthanorderingtheprintingofprepro-
grammed labels, possibly after having added cer-
tain input data, whereas the installer or system
managerwillrequireinformationonsetup,backup,
layout editing etc.
The list on the following pages contains all imagi-
nable steps in consecutive order, from unpacking
the printer via the editing and printing of a label to
the backup on a personal computer. Each step
containsareference to another manualorapagein
this manual, where you can find in-depth informa-
tion on the subject, should you be interested.
To facilitate the training of operators, who will not
concern themselves with other tasks than printing
labels or entering input data, you will find a Quick
ReferenceGuideattheendofthismanual.Cutitout
and post it at the printer.
Before you start, please take a quick look at the
descriptiononhowtousethevariouskeysandatthe

pages 9–16. You will find some useful short-cuts
and get a better overview on how the program is
designed. Later on, when you have become better
acquainted with the program, you can use these
pages to refresh your memory or as a quick refer-
ence guide.

USINGTHE UBI STAND-ALONE PRINTER
■Unpacking See U/M & T/D
Unpack the printer and check that it has not been visibly
damaged during transport. As standard, all UBI Stand-Alone
printers are equipped with:
• 512 kbyte RAM memory
• Real-time clock circuit (RTC)
• One serial communication channel for RS 232C.
■Voltage Check See U/M
Check that the printer is set up for the correct voltage.
❑Printer Modifications See T/D
Ifyouwanttomakeanymodificationstotheprinter,e.g.,change
some straps or fit an optional interface board, do so before you
connect the printer to a mains supply. Although such steps are
describedintheTechnicalDescription,westronglyrecommend
the assistance of a skilled technician!
❑Connection of External Equipment See T/D

free communication port, serial or parallel, provided both the
port and the device are set up for the same protocol.
■Paper Load See U/M & T/D
Load the printer with a supply of thermal transfer paper, or – in
case of EasyCoder 501 SA – of paper and thermal transfer
ribbon. See the User's Manual for loading instructions and the
Technical Description for paper/ribbon specifications.

characteristics:
• Character set: Roman 8
• Time type: 24-hour cycle
•Datestructure:YYMMDD(YY=year,MM=month,DD=day)
• Decimals: Decimal point
Ifnecessary,changethecharacteristicstobettersuitthecountry

the clock was set according to Swedish Mean Time (usually 1
hour earlier than GMT), but if you are going to use your printer
in another time zone, you must reset the clock.
❑External Keyboard Connection See page 26 & T/D
As an option, the printer can be fitted with the UBI External
Keyboard. Before installation, you must choose a communica-
tionporttowhichthekeyboardistobeconnected.Youmustalso
setthe character length to 8 bits and enable theexternal +5V on
the communication port in question.

■Editing Layouts See page 29
Layouts is the generic term for the various types of fields that
contain the information on the label, ticket, tag or strip. Some
fields are provided with information when the layout is edited,
whileothersjustcontainformattingparametersforinformation,
that is added later. To be able to print a label, you must have at
least one layout.
❑Listing Layouts See page 66
After having edited a number of layouts, a list of all layouts in
the printer's memory may be useful.
❑Deleting Layouts See page 67
Obsolete layouts can be removed in order to save valuable

has been provided with input data, you can save it for later use.
■Printing Labels See page 74
Singlelabelscanbeprintedduringthelabeleditingprocess,but
ifyouwantmorethanone copy or a batchofseverallabels,you
should use the label printing facility.
❑Listing Labels See page 77
After having edited a number of labels, a list of all labels stored
in the printer's memory helps you to keep record.
❑Deleting Labels See page 78
Obsolete labels can be removed in order to save valuable
memory space.
❑Data Transfer See page 80
When you have edited a number of layouts and labels, it is
recommended to make a backup to avoid the risk of losing all
your work. You can take backup on a personal computer or on
another identical UBI Stand-Alone printer.
There is also a convenient way of transferring data from one
printertoanother,soyoudonothavetoeditthesamelayoutsand

The first time the program is loaded, the printer will feed out two
blank labels in order to adjust itself to the paper web. Then a new

This is the Main Stand-Alone menu. When it is displayed, the
printerisreadyforoperation.Allexplanations,thatwillfollowlater
on, start from this menu.
As the menu implies, the program works in two modes, SetMode
and Run Mode:
• The Set Mode is used to create layouts consisting of various
types of fields, e.g. a line of text or a bar code. In the Set Mode
you can also delete layouts, produce various types of lists,
changethe printer's setup, set upthe printer for various national
characteristics, set the time and date and control the connection
of external equipment and the transfer of data.
• The Run Mode is used to create labels, i.e. combinations of
layoutsandvariableinputdata,thatareenteredintheRunMode.
You can order the printing of single labels or batches of labels
in variable quantities. There are also facilities for listing and
deleting labels.
Operators – who only need to select a label, add information and
ordertheprinting–do not have toconcernthemselveswith the Set
Mode, since they can perform their tasks without ever leaving the
Run Mode.
