2Limited Product Warranty
Unifire warranty covers the product against defects in workmanship and materials, only if the product is
installed and used according to the installation instructions. The warranty is valid for a period of twelve
(12) months starting from the date of purchase.
At the sole discretion of Unifire; the liability of Unifire shall be limited to the costs of the parts to be
repaired in the defective product or to the exchange of the defective product for a replacement product.
Unifire is not responsible, in contract, tort or strict product liability for any losses, damages, costs,
inconveniences and expenses, direct or indirect arising from the use of the product, or from defects in
workmanship or materials.
This warranty applies only to those products returned to Unifire during the warranty period.
This warranty does not cover the costs of the parts or labor incurred for the removal and transportation
of the defective product, or the reinstallation of the repaired or replaced product.
This warranty does not apply if the product has been damaged due to negligence by person, accident, fire,
Act of God, abuse or misuse; or has been damaged by modification, alterations or attachments made
subsequent to the purchase which have not been authorized by Unifire; or if the product was not installed

4General Product Information
The Pilot “eHEnergizer” (PHE) is a High Energy Ignition Exciter specifically designed for
safe and reliable ignition of pilots and small gas fired burners (<400,000BTU/hr) for
process heaters, boilers and other combustion equipment typically found in the
hydrocarbon processing industry.
The exciter utilizes a capacitor discharge circuit to supply up to 4 Joules of energy to
an igniter tip at a rate of 2 to 3 sparks per sec. At this energy level and sparking
frequency the igniter tip life is maximized.
There are two models available:
1. PHE - 120 which operates at 120 VAC
2. PHE - 24 which operates at 24 VDC
The exciter operates when input voltage is applied to the power supply terminals from
an external control e.g. Burner Management System (BMS). With power present, the
red LED is illuminated and the sparking circuit starts charging. Approximately two
seconds after the LED is turned on, the first spark will occur. Up to three sparks per
second are generated.
The spark interval allows system integrators to meet trial for ignition requirements of
governing codes and standards (e.g. CSA B149.3, NFPA 85) which can vary between 5
and 15 seconds.
The igniter tip connected by an ignition lead to the “eHEnergizer” provides the spark
necessary to ignite the fuel air mixture in the combustion zone. Due to high energy
output of the capacitive discharge the spark generated at the tip will operate
submerged in water, dirt, refractory or any other media commonly found in a furnace
or boiler.
After the trial for ignition period, the power can typically be removed from the unit. A
BMS can do this automatically once the flame is proven. There are no additional sparks
The “eHEnergizer” is a critical component for reliable ignition of the fuel air mixture in a fired
appliance. However, it is the responsibility of the system integrator to ensure that all applicable codes
and standards are adhered to for the complete BMS design, thus ensuring safe operation of the fired
appliance.

once power is removed. An internal circuit is provided that discharges any
accumulated charge in the capacitors to render the unit safe.
HAZARD
Care must be taken with the high voltage terminals at power-off. Discharge to levels below 30VDC
may take up to 4 minutes.

7Installation
Improper installation of this equipment may result in equipment being damaged or personal injury
due to electric shock. This unit must be installed according to all applicable electrical codes and
standards. This includes but is not limited to proper bonding, seals for hazardous areas and proper
wiring methods and types.
The control circuit utilizes high energy capacitors. If the unit is shut off during the ignition cycle but
before the spark has been discharged, the charge is stored in the capacitor. A bleed circuit is
provided which bleeds the charge to render the unit safe. It is recommended to leave the unit in the
explosion proof enclosure (if fitted) for up to 4 minutes after power down to minimize risk of electric
shock.
Note: the eHenergizer contains no serviceable parts.
The correct voltage must be supplied to the exciter for it to function correctly. There are two models,
24 Vdc and 120Vac. Check to see you have the correct model for the voltage supplied to it. Do not put
the wrong voltage on the exciter otherwise the circuit will fail.
This is NOT a single wire ignition system. There must be a return wire or unimpeded ground connection
between the igniter tip and terminal G on the high voltage side of the unit. Follow all local codes for
proper bonding of the exciter.

7.2 Unpacking
The “eHEnergizer” is typically installed in an explosion proof enclosure allowing its safe usage in areas up
to and including Class I Zone 1.
If the unit has been shipped with the recommended explosion proof enclosure it is necessary to remove
the cover from the enclosure to expose the field wiring terminals.
Extra care must be taken when handling the sealing o-ring at the base of the enclosure so as not to
pinch it.

7.3 Field Wiring
When the explosion proof enclosure is used, field wiring must be passed through the ¾” Female NPT
connection point on the base of the enclosure. For use in hazardous areas a seal fitting (EYS or similar)
must be provided within 18” of the enclosure connection point. With a proper seal, the assembly is
suitable for Class I Div 1/Zone 1 installation.
Signals from a BMS control unit (PLC) to the “eHEnergizer” travelling more than 1000ft should have
wiring selected that minimizes voltage drop to 10% at rated current.
7.3.1.1 Schematics
Consuming maximum 2A of power it the PHE-24 unit may be powered direct from a BMS control unit (e.g.
PLC). Otherwise interposing relays are required. Similarly, the PHE-120 unit can be wired as per traditional
ignition transformers or via an interposing relay to the PLC. The wiring schemes are illustrated below
(Figure 3).

For low voltage power supply signal wiring, it is recommended to use #14 multi-strand copper RW90
or similar.
A #14 AWG ground wire should also be wired to the “eHEnergizer” Ground (G) terminal.
A 3A slow blow fuse should be provided in the PHE-24 power supply circuit.
A 2A slow blow fuse should be provided in the PHE-120 power supply circuit.

7.3.3 Igniter Tip Connection
The “eHEnergizer” models are compatible and have been validated for use with a variety of igniter tips.
Optimized igniter tips (part number P-10000000-00 & P-10000000-01) are available from Unifire and
we strongly advise that you contact us ([e-mail]) to verify compatibility with your existing
igniter tips.
If you have received your “eHEnergizer” as part of a pilot assembly, the igniter tip will come pre-wired to
the Ignition (IGN) and burner ground (G) terminals of the controller. A typical general assembly for the
igniter tip is shown below (Figure 4).

The tip is typically mounted onto a 1/8” Sch 40 304 SS pipe or 3/8” 0.035” 316 SS tubing and via an adapter
inserted into or adjacent to the pilot mixing tube. The ignition wire passes down through the pipe/tube
which provides mechanical protection and a return path for the igniter current.
The ignition cable must be rated for a minimum 600VAC and 90C and be #14 or #12 multi-strand copper
wire. Connect the high voltage wire to the “IGN” terminal on the “eHEnergizer”.
A ground wire is prewired in pre-assembled enclosures from the enclosure body to the “eHEnergizer” high
voltage “G” terminal. This will provide a common ground path from the pipe/tube to the “eHEnergizer”.
The resistance of the ground path has to be less than 0.2Ω between the outside shell of the igniter tip
and the high side “G” terminal of the “eHEnergizer”.
If using a direct mount assembly, ensure the SST pipe/tube is properly fastened to the adaptor and
enclosure without use of Teflon tape or sealing compound that would impede the ground path.
7.4 Remote Field Wiring
The “eHEnergizer” may be remote mounted a significant distance from the igniter tip. This may be
necessary, for example, when mounting in a panel that is located outside of a hazardous area.
The recommended maximum distance for remote mounting of the “eHEnergizer” is 1000ft i.e. the
ignition wire should not exceed 1000ft in length. If the installation requirement cannot satisfy this
please contact Unifire to understand how longer distances can be accommodated.

8Testing the System
To test the system follow these steps:
1. Apply power to the “eHEnergizer”.
2. Verify that the red LED turns on.
3. After a short delay and Audible sparking noise “snap” will be heard from the igniter tip.
4. If visible, the igniter tip will appear as a very bright, strong flashes of white light.
5. The unit will continue to spark at a frequency of 2 sparks per second for 20 seconds.
6. The sparking then pauses for 10 seconds.
7. Sparking resumes for another 20seconds until removal of power.
On removal of power, if power is again applied quickly (<1-2 seconds) the unit will remain in the 10 second
delay period.

9Troubleshooting
The “eHEnergizer” contains no user serviceable parts. A shock hazard is present with the device and
under no circumstances should the end-user attempt to disassemble the electronic unit.
Please contact Unifire support for assistance with unit installation, operation and fault finding
([email protected]).
