Section 1
Installation
The SmartSourceTM Micro Series is a duplex multi-function scanner that can be used
to capture check images for remote deposit capture applications. Additionally, the
Micro series can image a variety of non-check items such as ID cards and licenses,
receipts, and business cards.

Windows Compatibility
Software drivers for the SmartSource(TM) Micro Series scanner are compatible with
the following Windows operating systems:
•Windows XP (SP2)
•Windows XP (SP3)
•Windows Vista
TWAIN 1.9 Compatible Driver
The scanner’s TWAIN 1.9 compatible driver works with many imaging applications.

Using the Scanner with Other Applications
The scanner is fully TWAIN 1.9 compatible and can be used with many applications
that use standard TWAIN device input:
•Remote deposit capture
•Desktop publishing
•Games
•Faxes
•Business card scans
To use the scanner with such an application, select the scanner source options from
your program’s “source” options and look for the SmartSource(TM) Micro Series list.
The “source” scanner options may be found under “TWAIN devices available” or
“import from.”
Install the Software on the CD-ROM
USB Cable Caution
Install the software from the CD-ROM onto your computer before
plugging the USB cable from the scanner into the PC. The red label on the
computer end of the USB cable is there to remind you!
1. Insert the installation drive into your PC CD-ROM drive.
The installation program starts.
2. Select “Install Scanner Driver” on the screen. Then, follow the instructions on the
screen.

3. After the installation starts, you must click the checkmark box next to “I accept
the terms in the License Agreement” at the bottom of the End-User License
Agreement screen. Then, click the “Next” button to continue.
4. Follow the on-screen prompts for step-by-step installation.
5. At the end of the software installation, the display returns to the main menu.
6. Adobe Reader 8 can be installed now or later.
Note:
You should restart your computer after installing your software. Windows
will not prompt you to do this.

Uninstall the Software
You can remove the scanner driver from the computer.
1. Use the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility:
StartÆControl PanelÆAdd or Remove Programs
2. At the Add or Remove Programs window, select SmartSource(TM) Micro Series
from the list of currently installed programs.
3. Click the Remove button to remove the scanner driver software from your
computer.
Note:
The scanner must be connected to your computer to delete the scanner
software from your computer.
4. You can also remove Adobe Reader 8.1 from your computer from the Add or
Remove Programs window.
Install the Scanner
1. Connect the USB cable that you received with the scanner to the computer and
the scanner.
Note:
Remove the red label on the computer end of the USB cable before
connecting that end to the computer.
2. If the scanner cannot be detected, you may have to connect the USB cable to
another USB port on your computer. (Check the user guide for your computer for
the location of other USB ports.)
3. If you connect the scanner through a hub, the hub must use an external power
adapter. (The scanner requires 500mA.)
4. When the scanner is connected to your computer, Found New Hardware appears.
When the software and hardware are successfully installed, the following messages
display in the system tray:
“Found New Hardware “Found New Hardware
SmartSource(TM) Micro Series” Your new hardware is installed and ready to use.”

Initial Scanner Calibration
Note:
You must calibrate the scanner before using it for the first time.
There are two methods for calibrating your scanner and you can use either one
described here. For either method, you will need the calibration target (two sheets
came with scanner).
Calibrate from Scanners and Cameras under Control Panel
1. Select StartÆControl PanelÆScanners and Cameras.
Find your scanner in the list.
2. Right-click on the scanner name.
A pull-down window appears.
3. Select “Calibrate”.
For Windows Vista computers, right-click on the scanner model and go to
“Properties.”
4. Insert the calibration target and click on the “Calibrate” button.
Calibrate from Software Application or TWAIN-Compliant
Application
1. Install the bundled software application.
2. On the menu toolbar, select
FileÆSelect Source (Scanning Source)
3. Select your scanner, SmartSource(TM) Micro Series.
4. Do not select “WIA-SmartSource(TM) Micro Series” at this time.
5. On the menu toolbar, select
FileÆAcquire Image Data…
The TWAIN user interface appears.

Select “Calibrate”
6. Insert the calibration target sheet that came with your scanner.
7. Select “Calibrate” again.
Operating Tips
Insert the document you wish to scan into the intake slot. Position the item at the
level of the intake slot.
Follow these tips for preparing documents:
•The leading edge of the document must be free of wrinkles or folds.
Folded/wrinkled documents must be straightened or flattened before inserting
into the scanner.
•Remove staples from items/paper before inserting items into the scanner.
•Make sure that documents do not have wet White Out or areas where dried
White Out has chipped off.
•Do not insert anything that has any adhesive on it into the scanner, including Post
Its.
•Clean the scanner with the included cleaning sheet and 70% isopropyl alcohol (not
included). Place a few drops along the middle of the cleaning material and
proceed to the Calibrate menu, select CLEAN option instead.
Your scanner will automatically pass the cleaning material back and forth over the
internal image sensor glass.

Scanned Image Quality Issues
If scanned image quality is not satisfactory, clean the scanner with the cleaning sheet
and then calibrate the scanner.
Any items and cleaning supplies for the SmartSource Micro Series are available from
Unisys Direct for world-wide delivery.
Unisys approved supplies/items are available from Unisys Direct.

•In other countries, refer to www.direct.unisys.com/locations.
The first source of information is your application provider. If this contact is not
successful, call the Unisys Help Desk at 1-800-328-0440.
Cleaning the Scanner
The scanner ships with a cleaning sheet. You will need this sheet and 70% isopropyl
alcohol (which you must supply).
1. Place a few drops of alcohol along the middle of the cleaning sheet.
2. On your computer, you must now go through the calibration procedure to reach
the Calibration Page, whether calibrating from a software application or TWAIN-
compliant Application.
a. For a software application, do the following:
−Select StartÆControl PanelÆScanners and Cameras.
Find your scanner in the list.
−Right-click on the scanner name.
The pull-down window appears.
Select “Clean”
−For Windows Vista computers, right-click on the scanner model and go to
“Properties.”
−Insert the cleaning sheet and click on the “Clean” button.
The scanner automatically moves the cleaning sheet back and forth over
the internal image glass sensor.

b. For a TWAIN-compliant application, do the following:
−On the menu toolbar, select
FileÆSelect Source (Scanning Source)
−Select your scanner, SmartSource(TM) Micro Series.
−Do not select “WIA-SmartSource(TM) Micro Series” at this time.
−On the menu toolbar, select
FileÆAcquire Image Data…
The TWAIN user interface appears.
−Insert the cleaning sheet and click on the “Clean” button.
