Getting Started
Set up a user profile so your children can enjoy all the activities
and games1provided by Genio, My First Laptop.
1. CHARGE your Genio using the supplied power adaptor.
A red light indicates charging is in progress. The light
will change to green when the device is fully charged. A
full charge will take about 3.5 hours. The battery should
be fully charged before first use or before attempting a
firmware update.
2. CREATE the first user profile and set the system Date
and Time. You may also want to set a passcode to keep
the profile secure.
3. UNLOCK the VTech Web Browser and Learning LodgeTM
apps with the Parental Controls.
• Connect to Wi-Fi2in Device Settings >> Wi-Fi Settings.
• Unlock the VTech Web Browser under Child Profile
Manager >> App Permissions.
• Register or login to a Learning Lodge™ account in Learning
Lodge™ Account Registration, and make sure Learning
Lodge™ is unlocked under Child Profile Manager >> App
Permissions.
4. EXPLORE the word processor, learn with revision sheets,
enjoy fun learning games and more!

Introduction
Genio, My First Laptop, introduces children into the world of
computers and the Internet in a safe way. There are over 80 activities
and games included that children can interact with using the real
mouse and QWERTY keyboard.
With the pre-loaded word processor, children can create their own
written documents. Templates are provided to offer an easy way
for children to create greetings cards, letters and other types of
document. Export and save the documents to a microSD card (not
included) for printing.
There are 20 printable Revision Sheets available to help children study
maths, language, history and more. Creative topics are also included
for fun activities, including origami.
A kid-friendly Web Browser is pre-loaded, so children can search for
more information to help with their studies online. Using the Diary
and Calendar provided, this laptop can also help children develop
autonomy and learn about forward planning.
For leisure time, children can use Genio to enjoy their favourite music
and videos, or play the 40+ games and e-books included.

Keyboard layout
Genio is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard which is similar to a
typical computer keyboard.
In addition to the letter and number keys, there are also some function
keys:
Function keys: Function description:
Esc: Close a dialogue box, pop up menu or pull down
menu.
Tab: When typing, use this key to insert a tab stop at the
beginning of a line.
Caps Lock: When the Caps Lock is ON and the Caps
Lock indicator is illuminated, all letters will be typed in
capitals.
Page Up: If a scroll bar is available, this will scroll the
screen upwards by one page.
Page Down: If a scroll bar is available, this will scroll the
screen downwards by one page.
Hme (Home): When typing, return the cursor to
the beginning of the current line. When reviewing a
document with a scroll bar, press this key to reset the
scroll bar to the top of the page.
Space Bar: When typing, insert a space between
words, letters or numbers.
Shift: Press this key together with a letter key to
capitalise the letter. You can also use this key to access
the alternate letters or symbols coloured orange.

Ctrl: Press this key together with other keys to perform
shortcut functions in the Word Processor. Please refer to
table below for more details.

End: When typing, move the cursor to the end of the
Current line. When reviewing a document with a scroll
bar, press this key to advance the scroll bar to the foot
of the page.
Alt: Use this key to access the alternate letters or
symbols coloured blue.
Arrow Keys: When typing, use these keys to move the
cursor up, down, left or right, respectively.
Enter: When typing, press this to add a new line. You
can also press this key to confirm a selection.
Delete: Delete the current character or space to the
right of the cursor.
Backspace: Erase the character or space to the left of
the cursor.

Parental Controls
To enter Parental Controls, click the Parental Controls icon at the
bottom right corner of the profile selection screen.
Using Parental Controls, you can control the way your children play by
adding or removing apps, setting time limits, managing access to the Web,
and adjusting device settings. If your child has forgotten the passcode
they have set, you can also help them to reset the passcode here.
Adding or Removing Apps
Browse Learning Lodge™ for a selection of age-appropriate, educational
apps that have been approved by VTech®learning experts. Manage any
content purchased from Learning Lodge™ in Download Manager.
Setting Time Limits
Select Time Limits under Child Profile Manager to limit the amount of
time your children can play each day, or to mark certain hours of the
day as off limits.
Note: We recommend the use of these screen Time Limits. For more
information and some easy to follow tips on screen time for both
parents & children please refer to www.vtech.co.uk/screentime.
Managing Web Access
By default, the Web Browser is OFF until enabled through the
passcode-protected App Permissions under Child Profile Manager.
Although VTech®makes every effort to ensure a child-friendly
browsing environment, the content of individual websites may change
without VTech's knowledge. Please be sure to monitor your child's
online experience.

Resetting Child Passcode
If your child has forgotten the passcode they have set, please enter
Reset Child Passcode under Child Profile Manager and click the Reset
icon to remove the existing passcode.
If You Forget Your Parental Controls Passcode
If you forget your passcode for Parental Controls, go to the passcode
screen, press the Down Arrow key, Spacebar, Delete key and Help
button at the same time. Then, your passcode will be removed and
you can set a new Parent passcode.
Charging your Genio, My First Laptop
To charge Genio, connect the supplied power adaptor to the Power
Adaptor Port on the device. Then, plug the adaptor into a power
socket.

Inserting a MicroSD Card
You can insert a microSD memory card (not included) into your Genio
to save and export all your creations and documents. The Genio is
compatible with microSD memory cards up to 128GB.
• Make sure the Genio is turned off.
• Insert the microSD card as shown above.
Care & Maintenance
1. Keep your Genio out of direct sunlight and away from direct
sources of heat.
2. Turn off your Genio when not using it for an extended period of time.
3. Avoid dropping your Genio and NEVER try to dismantle it.
4. Always keep your Genio away from water.
5. This toy contains batteries that are non-replaceable.

The batteries within this toy are permanently encased. Before
giving this toy to a child make sure there are no signs of damage.
Regularly check the toy and dispose of it immediately if there

children’s reach before disposing of them via a safe disposal system.

Cleaning the Genio Screen
• Slightly dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with a little water and wipe
the screen to loosen dirt.
• Use a clean and dry cloth to wipe the screen dry. Repeat these two
steps as needed.
Cleaning the Genio Cabinet
• Keep your Genio clean by wiping it with a slightly damp cloth.
Never use solvents or abrasives.
Standard guidelines for adaptor toys
and electrically operated products
• The toy is not intended for children under 3 years old.
• As with all electrical products, precautions should be used and
observed during handling and use to prevent electric shock.
• Do not leave the toy plugged in for extended periods of time.
• Never clean a plugged-in toy with liquid.
• Never use more than one adaptor.
• Parents should periodically examine the adaptor for conditions that
may result in the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. In the
event of such conditions, the adaptor should be replaced and not used.
• If the pins of the plug are damaged, the plug-in power supply
should be scrapped.
• If the adaptor is damaged, it cannot be used and must be replaced.

Important Safeguards
Before use, please read this instruction carefully and use the adaptor
strictly according to the instruction:
1. The output power taken from the supply must not exceed the rating
given on the power supply.
2. The appliance is not intended to be repaired by service personnel in
case of failure or component defect (adaptor should be disposed of).
3. The external flexible cable or cord of this power supply cannot be
replaced; If the cord is damaged, the power supply should be scrapped.
4. The disconnection from line voltage is made by pulling the mains plug.
5. The socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be
easily accessible.

7. Instructions to parents: Power adaptors and power supplies for toys
are not intended to be used as toys, and the use of these products
by children shall be under the full supervision of parents.
8. Note that during use, some areas surrounding the LCD screen of
the laptop can become quite warm to the touch. This is completely
normal but it is recommended to avoid touching these warm parts
for prolonged periods.
WARNING: For the purposes of recharging the battery, only use the
5V DC adaptor VT05EUK05100 provided with this toy that complies
with EN61558/EN62368.
Avoid use in the following conditions:
•Extreme high or low temperatures during use, storage or transportation.
• Low air pressure at high altitude.
• Disposal of the product into fire or a hot oven, or mechanically
crushing or cutting the battery, which can result in an explosion.
• Extremely high temperature and/or extremely low air pressure that
can result in an explosion or the leakage of flammable liquid or gas.

Safety for Using the Battery and Charger
Important Notes:
• This charger is not a toy. This charger is not intended for use by children.
• The device will charge at temperatures between
41°F~95°F(5°C~35°C). If the device is not charging properly, please
move it to a location with a suitable temperature.
• Battery is not removable and is not replaceable.
• Disconnect the device from the adaptor and turn off the device
before cleaning.
• To prevent fire or electric shock, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
• The battery in this product must not be disposed of with household
waste. This battery is recyclable, please follow your local recycling
regulations.
• To preserve battery life, the Genio will go into sleep mode
automatically when there is no input for a few minutes. The Wi-Fi
connection will also be disconnected when the battery power is low.
• Avoid playing with the device while it is being charged.
• Do not charge the device overnight or for a prolonged time.

Battery disposal/recycling
As a responsible distributor, VTech®is committed to ensuring correct
disposal of batteries to reduce the environmental damage they can cause.
VTech®offers a returns program for products with inaccessible batteries
(i.e. built-in Lithium Polymer batteries). If you're located in the UK, please
email consumer_services@vtech.com with the subject "battery disposal"
to obtain a returns form. If you are located in Australia / New Zealand,
please contact our consumer service team (see contact details page 17)
Disposal of batteries and product
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbols on products and batteries,
or on their respective packaging, indicates they must not be
disposed of in domestic waste as they contain substances that
can be damaging to the environment and human health.
The chemical symbols Hg, Cd or Pb, where marked, indicate
that the battery contains more than the specified value of
mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) or lead (Pb) set out in Battery
Directive (2006/66/EC).
The solid bar indicates that the product was placed on the
market after 13th August, 2005.
Help protect the environment by disposing of your product or
batteries responsibly.

WARNING
A very small percentage of the public, due to an existing condition, may experience
epileptic seizures or momentary loss of consciousness when viewing certain types
of flashing colours or patterns, especially on screens. While the Genio device does
not contribute to any additional risks, we do recommend that parents supervise
their children while they play video games. If your child experiences dizziness,
altered vision, disorientation, or convulsions, discontinue use immediately and
consult your doctor. Please note that focusing on an LCD screen at close range for
a prolonged period of time may cause fatigue or discomfort. We recommend that
children take a 15-minute break for every hour of play.
Caution
Use the power adaptor that came with this device to charge it.
Please note: VTech®is the only service provider that is authorised to replace the battery
on your Genio device. Any attempt to remove or replace the battery by a third party or
by yourself may damage your Genio device and will void your warranty. If you feel your
battery needs service, please contact VTech's Consumer Services Department.

NOTES:
Static electricity may cause the Genio device to malfunction. In some
cases, user data stored in the device's memory may be lost. In cases
where the Genio device is malfunctioning due to static electricity,
reset it by pressing and holding the Power Button for 10 seconds until
the unit turns off. Then press and hold the Power Button for three
seconds to turn the unit on again.
Note: Maximum output voltage ≤150mV.

GOVERN YOUR USE OF SOFTWARE FOR GENIO, MY FIRST LAPTOP
OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE APPLICATION OF SOFTWARE
(“SOFTWARE”). “SOFTWARE” INCLUDES AUDIO FILES FOR THE
GENIO, MY FIRST LAPTOP.
BY ACTIVATING, USING, DOWNLOADING OR INSTALLING THIS
SOFTWARE , YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS
OF THIS AGREEMENT. YOUR RIGHT TO USE THE SOFTWARE IS
CONDITIONAL UPON YOUR AGREEMENT TO THESE TERMS. IF YOU

only be used by you in accordance with this Agreement. The Software
and Documentation are licensed, not sold. Except as specifically set
forth herein, VTECH®and its licensors retain all right, title and interest,
including all intellectual property rights, in and to the Software and
Documentation.

2. LICENSE TERMS. VTECH®grants to you, subject to the terms,
conditions and limitations further defined in this Agreement, a
non-exclusive, non-sublicenseable, non-transferable license for
non-commercial use, and to use the Documentation in connection
with such use of the Software. Any modifications, upgrades, error
corrections, or other updates to the Software provided by VTECH®
to you shall be deemed part of the Software and use thereof
shall be governed by the terms and conditions of this Agreement,
unless the parties have entered into a separate, written agreement
governing such modifications, upgrades, error corrections, or other
updates.
3. RESTRICTIONS ON REVERSE ENGINEERING AND SECURITY.
Except to the extent otherwise expressly and unambiguously
authorised by VTECH®or to the extent such restrictions are
explicitly prohibited by applicable law, you shall NOT reverse
engineer, decompile, disassemble, translate or attempt to learn the
source code of the Software (ii) copy, modify, create derivative
works of, distribute, sell, assign, pledge, sublicense, lease, loan, rent,
timeshare, deliver or otherwise transfer the Software (iii) remove
from the Software, or alter or add, any copyright, trademarks,
trade names, logos, notices or markings (iv) violate, tamper with
or circumvent any security system or measures implemented by
VTECH®which are designed to prevent unauthorised copying of the
Software. Any such forbidden use shall immediately terminate your
license to the Software without any prior notice.
4. LIMITED WARRANTY. VTECH®warrants to you – subject to your
compliance with the terms herein – that for a period of ninety (90)
days from the date you purchase the Product, the Software will
substantially conform to VTECH®’s published specifications for
the Software. Your sole and exclusive remedy under the foregoing
warranty shall be for VTECH®, at its choice, to use commercially
reasonable efforts to correct any substantial non-conformity of the
Software reported to VTECH®in writing within the warranty period
and/or provide a replacement copy of the Software. The foregoing
warranty shall not apply to any non-conformity that is caused by
(i) the use or operation of the Software with an application or in an
environment other than that intended or recommended by VTECH®,
(ii) modifications to the Software not made by VTECH®or (iii) third
party hardware or software provided by any third party.

VTECH®MAKES NO WARRANTIES THAT THE SOFTWARE IS ERROR
FREE OR IS SUITABLE FOR YOUR PURPOSES. VTECH®MAKES
NO WARRANTIES OTHER THAN THOSE SET FORTH ABOVE, AND
HEREBY DISCLAIMS ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, WHETHER EXPRESS,
IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, WITH RESPECT TO THE SOFTWARE OR
DOCUMENTATION, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE, OR NONINFRINGEMENT. NO ORAL OR WRITTEN
INFORMATION OR ADVICE GIVEN BY VTECH®, ITS RESELLERS,
AGENTS OR EMPLOYEES SHALL CREATE A WARRANTY.
5. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL VTECH®BE LIABLE
FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, USE OF DATA, COST OF REPLACEMENT
GOODS OR HARDWARE, OR OTHER INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL,
SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF
YOUR USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD
OR DOCUMENTATION, EVEN IF VTECH®HAS BEEN ADVISED OF
THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, AND NOTWITHSTANDING
THE FAILURE OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF ANY REMEDY. YOU
AGREE THAT IN NO EVENT WILL VTECH®’S AGGREGATE LIABILITY
HEREUNDER OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SOFTWARE OR
DOCUMENTATION EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID FOR THE PRODUCT
AND/OR SOFTWARE.
6. TERMINATION. This License Agreement will automatically terminate
if you fail to comply with any term thereof. No notice shall be required
from VTECH®to effect such termination.
