your go-to tremolo unit. It’s got a multitude of awesome
control options, but most importantly, it’s a fantastic, musical
tremolo wit pure, old-sc ool analogue tone circuitry w ic
can elp you create fantastic tremolo sounds.
T is manual will describe t e Dark Waves’ controls and
options. Read t oroug ly and soon you will be t e master of

Pedal Diagram
1. Power Jack – plug a standard, centre negative 9v power
supply ere. Most standard power supplies will work: if
it’ll power a Boss pedal, it’ll power t e Dark Waves Tap
Tempo Tremolo.
2. Input – plug your guitar, or t e previous effects pedal in
your c ain, in ere.
3. Output – plug your amp, or t e next pedal in your c ain,
in ere.

4. Bypass Footswitc – turn t e effect on and off wit t is
soft touc footswitc .
5. Status / Wave LED – t is LED will reflect t e tremolo
wave you create wit t e Dark Waves’ controls. T is LED
will lig t red w en t e effect is bypassed, and yellow
w en t e effect is engaged.
6. Dark Waves Controller Input – plug t e Dark Waves
Controller in wit t e included TRRS cable ere. See
page 11 for more info about t e Dark Waves Controller.
If you don’t own t e Dark Waves Controller, you can tap
t e tempo in wit out a tempo LED by connecting a
standard Normally Open momentary footswitc , suc as
a standard Vein Tap tap tempo pedal, or t e tap tempo
footswitc on t e Holy Era Tap Tempo Delay.

8. Dept Control – select ow muc your tone is affected
by t e tremolo wit t is control, from completely static
at 1 to fully silenced at t e nadir of t e tremolo wave at

10. Rate Control – controls ow fast t e tremolo wave is,
from 20 seconds per cycle at 1 to 12.5 cycles per second
at 11.

Wave Shapes
T ere are 16 wave s apes to c oose from wit t is control:
T e Wave S ape control allows you to select 8 wave s apes
in sequence. W en t e Dark Waves Controller's Alternate
Waves switc is disengaged, t e upper 8 wave forms are
available. W en engaged, t e lower 8 wave forms are
available. See t e Dark Waves Controller c apter on page 11
for more details.
T e wave s apes, in order, are:
1. Ramp Up – signal travels from full silence at t e
beginning of t e cycle to full volume at t e end.
2. Ramp Down – signal travels from full volume at t e
beginning of t e cycle to full silence at t e end.
3. Pulse – no slope between t e positive and negative
waves.

4. Triangle – signal travels from zenit to nadir at a uniform
rate.
5. Sine Wave – signal travels faster at t e centre of t e
wave, and slows at t e zenit and nadir of t e wave.
6. Sweep – signal travels quickly to and from t e zenit ,
and slowly at t e nadir of t e wave.
7. Lumps – signal travels quickly to and from t e nadir of
t e wave, and slowly at t e zenit of t e wave.
8. Random Levels – signal randomly c anges volume, wit
no slope in between points.
9. Ramp + Oct: like t e Ramp Up wave s ape, wit a
sudden dip in t e middle of t e wave.
10. Quad Ramp: four rapid down ramps, w ic stay down
on t e fourt ramp for an equal amount of time.
11. Quad Pulse: four rapid square wave pulses, w ic stay in
t e negative after t e fourt pulse for an equal amount
of time.
12. Tri Step – signal divides evenly between 0%, 50% and
100%.

13. Sine + Oct: like t e Sine wave, wit a smaller wave in t e
parent wave's centre.
14. Sine + 3rd: Two positive sine waves followed by two
negative sine waves.
15. Sine + 4t : One alf, one full, and one alf positive sine
wave, followed by one alf, one full, and one alf
negative sine wave.
16. Random Slopes – signal slopes between random levels.

Centre Shift
T e Dark Waves Tap Tempo Tremolo’s Centre S ift control
allows you to take t e centre point of a wave, and move it.
T is is best expressed grap ically. In t is example, we’re
using t e triangle wave s ape:
T e Centre S ift control moves t e exact centre of t e wave
s ape, so t e equivalent c ange on t e Sine Wave s ape
would be:

Tempo Multiplier
T e Tempo Multiplier control allows you to take t e tempo,
eit er tapped in wit t e Dark Waves Controller or set by t e
Rate control, and multiply it to get certain tempo divisions.
T e multipliers are, from left to rig t:
1. Half note, or minim. Tempo is read at 50%.
2. Quarter note,
or crotc et.
Tempo is read
as set.
3. Dotted quarter
note, or triplet
crotc et.
Tempo is read at 150%.
4. Eig t note, or quaver. Tempo is read at 200%.
5. Dotted eig t note, or triplet quaver. Tempo is read at
300%.
6. Sixteent note, or semiquaver. Tempo is read at 400%.
Using t e Tempo Multiplier allows you to get untappably fast
tempos – up to 100 cycles per second.

The Dark Waves Controller
T e Dark Waves Controller extends t e footswitc able
capabilities of t e Dark Waves Tap Tempo Tremolo pedal by
adding an external tap tempo footswitc on t e rig t, and a
tempo multiplier footswitc on t e left.
1. Dark Waves Controller Output –connects to t e lower
left input on t e Dark Waves (point number 6 on t e
pedal diagram on page 3 of t is manual) wit a TRRS
cable.
2. Tap Tempo In / Out – connects to a compatible
(momentary, Normally Open) tap tempo input on an

external pedal (suc as t e Holy Era Tap Tempo Delay)
to allow t e Dark Waves Controller to s are t e tapped
tempo. Can also accept incoming momentary Normally
Open tap tempo signal to control t e Dark Waves
Tremolo’s Rate.
3. Tempo LED – blinks in accordance wit t e tempo set by
t e Tap Tempo Footswitc , or t e Rate and Multiplier
controls if t e tempo is set manually.
4. Tap Tempo Footswitc - allows you to override t e
tempo set by t e Rate control by tapping t e switc
twice. T e Dark Waves reads t e time between two taps
and sets t at amount of time as t e new Rate. Override
t is by turning t e Rate control, or by tapping in a new
tempo.
5. Alternate Waveset Footswitc – use t is latc ing
footswitc to select t e alternate waveset s own in as
t e lower 8 wave s apes on page 6 of t is manual. T e
Tempo LED will lig t red w en t e Alternate Waveset is
disengaged, and yellow w en t e Alternate Waveset is
engaged.

Pre- mp or Effects Loop Placement
It’s entirely up to you w ere you put your Dark Waves Tap
Tempo Tremolo pedal in your pedal c ain. If your amp as an
effects loop, t en putting t e Dark Times in it will make t e
pedal ave a more profound effect on your signal, especially
if you’re using a ig -gain amplifier. Placing t e effect before
your amp’s input will make t e effect a little more subtle,
especially on ig gain amplifiers and doubly so w en t e
effect is put before drive / distortion pedals.
As always, t ere’s not ing more fun t an experimenting wit
your tone, so find out w at your friends and bandmates
would do, ask on t e forums, consider t e fact t at
modulation effects suc as tremolo traditionally go in t e
effects loop of an amp… and t en t row t e rules away and
find out for yourself. T ere’s not ing better t an sounding
good w en t e rules say you s ouldn’t!
