Velocity Recon User manual

www.VelocityParagliders.com

Thank you for your purchase of your new Velocity Recon. We are
pleased to present such a fine performance glider that you will be
sure to enjoy for years to come.
Disclaimer:
This manual is provided to offer guidelines to the pilot. This manual is not to
be used as a training manual. The pilot operating this paraglider must be
qualified to do so. This is not a beginner glider and should never be used as
such. The pilot is personally responsible for their own safety and flying this
paraglider at their own risk. The pilot is responsible for their paragliding
airworthiness. Neither the manufacturer, or dealer, accepts any responsibilities
or liabilities for this activity. Never fly or test the limits of this glider without
being at high altitude and use extreme caution. Low level turns, or maneu-
vers is never recommended. Remember, altitude is your friend!

Risers
The Velocity Recon is equipped with split “A” risers. These enable “Big Ears”
by simply pulling the second “A” risers. The risers also include parachute style
soft links. These are used to connect the lines to the riser attachment points
in lieu of metal connection points. The use of soft links not only is stronger
but weighs less and adds more feel.
Dual loop connection points in the risers allows for Engine Torque Compensa-
tion (ETC) without adjustment of the glider trimmers or your flight harness. If
your engine is a torque “left” engine, then you will want to connect the
longest loop (red) on the left side and the inner (blue) on the right side. For a
“right” torque motor, you will want to have the long loop (red) on the right,
and the short inner loop (blue) on the left.
Trims
The Velocity Recon utilizes a unique kind of trim system. This trim system is
safety oriented and utilizes less than three inches of trim adjustability. The
idea behind less trim is to enable the pilot to utilize more speed bar. With
most gliders on the market today, they have in excess of 10-12 inches of trim
and it is our opinion that in the event of a collapse, having 10 plus inches of
trim out, makes the recovery of a reflex glider much longer as it is virtually
impossible to pull the trims to the close position with slack lines. In the
Recon’s case, full trim out (approximately 3 inches) and the use of the speed
bar will allow the pilot to release the speed bar and technically leave the
glider with only 3 inches of trim out; this will allow for a much faster recovery
in the event of a collapse.

Flying the Recon
Dual toggle control (DTC)
The outer toggle is the main brake toggle that influences the entire trailing
edge of the paraglider. This toggle is used for normal flight, take off and
landing. Do not use this toggle with the speed bar is use. Avoid use of both
toggles at the same time when the glider is in full reflex trim.
The inner toggle is located inside of the outer toggle. The inner toggle
influences the trailing edge lines closest to the wing tip and not the central
part of the trailing edge. These inner toggles may be used under partial
speed bar but only in full trim. The glider will turn rapidly and drop significant
altitude when these inner toggles are used.
The inner and outer toggle line lengths can vary. Should the pilot require a
faster turning glider, he may shorten the inner toggle line. CAUTION - Do not
exceed 10 mm or 7/16 of an inch of variance between the two toggle lines.
The pilot may also disconnect this toggle and tie the line to the outer toggle.
Make sure that both sides are balanced evenly.
Wing Tip Toggle - This toggle is attached via Velcro to the B riser. This toggle
allows for true wing tip steering. Use this toggle for steering when using full
trim and speed bar. No trailing edge is in use.
Speed Bar
This glider is equipped with a speed bar. In the event that you do not know
how to properly use, attach or adjust the speed bar, PLEASE seek the advice
from a qualified instructor. Do not use the speed bar unless you are in full
reflex. Avoid the use of both the inner and outer toggle under full speed bar.
All steering should be done via the wing tip toggle.
CAUTION:
Many pilots with past or present free flight experience, keep their brakes
slightly applied at all times. While this technically works well for climbing
and reduces sink, it is NOT advisable for reflex paragliders such as the
Recon. When the brakes are applied and held down, the reflex profile on
the trailing edge is negated (removed) and could cause a loss of pressure
or trimming of the air foil, thus resulting in an instant collapse of the glider.
Maintain adequate altitude at all times to aid recovery in the event of a
collapse of this nature.

Sand or other Debris
It is especially critical to keep your Reflex glider free from any sand or debris
that could influence the Reflex profile.
Transport
This glider is best transported in its own rug sack or stuff sack as sunlight and
too much heat can affect the equipment adversely. When not in use, please
pack your glider and put it in a cool, dark area.
Storage
All of the equipment should be stored away from light and in a dry, well
ventilated room and protected from temperature fluctuations. Rooms or
garages, where Petrol, solvents, or other chemically aggressive substances are
stored is unsuitable. If you will not be flying your Velocity paraglider for a
few weeks, we recommend you open the stuff sack and slightly unroll the
glider to release the tension. This will circulate air around the glider and
allow it to breathe. Should the canopy become wet, spread it out so the air
can dry all areas. This is best achieved by laying out the entire canopy. Even
if the fabric feels dry, it may NOT be. The cloth fiber can retain moisture and
the water takes longer to diffuse out the cloth than it does to evaporate on
the surface. Thus, your canopy may feel dry in the evening but may be wet
again the following morning. It can take several days for the canopy to dry
out completely. This is an essential process and if it is ignored, the material
will become porous, thereby impeding the efficiency of your glider.
If you should have any questions or concerns about your Velocity Recon
Gliders, please contant us and we will be happy to assist your.
Enjoy your new glider,
The Team BlackHawk Crew
