GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
1 The law demands that all gas appliances are installed by c mpetent pers ns in
acc rdance with the current GAS SAFETY (INSTALLATION AND USE) REGULATIONS.
The installati n must c mply with these installati n instructi ns and all relevant parts
f L cal and Nati nal Building Regulati ns r Building Standards (Sc tland)
(C ns lidati n) Regulati ns and th se relevant rec mmendati ns f the f ll wing
British Standards.

In additi n t the Standards detailed ab ve the installati n must c mply with the
current IEE wiring regulati ns.
2 THE HEARTH (Appliances in floo level fi eplaces)
Where the appliance is fitted in a fl r level builders pening, fl r level fireplace recess
r fl r level flue b x, the hearth shall:
a) Extend thr ugh the wh le base f the builders pening, fireplace recess r beneath
the flue b x.
b) Pr ject at least 300mm in fr nt f any naked flame r incandescent part f the fire
bed.
c) Pr ject at least 150mm bey nd each side f any naked flame r incandescent part f
the fire bed, r if there is a n n-c mbustible wall within 150mm f any naked flame
r incandescent part f the fire bed, up t that wall.
d) Have a thickness f n t less than 12mm and a minimum height f 50mm al ng its
fr nt and side edges.
HOLE-IN-THE-WALL INSTALLATIONS
Where the appliance is installed in a h le-in-the-wall fireplace, a hearth as previ usly
detailed f r fl r level fireplaces shall be fitted n the fl r beneath the h le s as t
pr tect c mbustible material fr m radiant heat unless:
a) The appliance is installed s that every part f any naked flame r incandescent part
f the fire bed is at least 225mm vertically ab ve any carpet r fl r c vering. When
installing an appliance in this situati n a tactile separat r must be used, t pr tect
as far as reas nably p ssible the user, r ther pers ns within the r m, fr m risk f
burns r igniti n f their cl thing.
b) A tactile separat r can be in the f rm f a fender, kerb, hearth, shelf r h riz ntal
bar all made fr m n n c mbustible material and fixed n t less than 50mm & n t
m re than 1000mm ab ve the fl r level. They sh uld be p siti ned n t less than
300mm in fr nt f and 150mm bey nd the edge f any naked flame r incandescent
part f the fire bed.
3 It is rec mmended that dec rative frets have a minimum f 30cm2 (5 sq. in) f free air
space thr ugh the ash pan c ver.
4 VENTILATION
Subject t a satisfact ry spillage test, there is n requirement f r purp se made
ventilati n int the r m c ntaining the appliance. (See page 15)

5 FLUE TERMINAL POSITION

FITTING THE FIREBOX - SURFACE FITTED
1 Note F r surface fitting f the Fanfare the fire surr und must have a minimum rebate
f 130mm (See Figure 2). Alternatively the depth f the fireb x can be acc mm dated
within a false chimney breast (See Figure 3).

Note Do not trap wires between hot surfaces.
2 Measure the height f the hearth and make a mark n the wall at the same height.
3 Mark a h riz ntal line 425mm ab ve the hearth level line and a vertical line n the
centre line f the fireplace (See Figure 4). At this p int drill a pil t h le thr ugh the
cavity wall t the utside.
4 Cut a h le thr ugh the cavity wall t accept the flue duct. This can be achieved using
either a 127mm (5'') diameter c re drill r a h le cut t the dimensi ns sh wn in Figure
4.
5 Pr visi n will als need t be made t bring the p wer supply cable thr ugh the wall t
the fan b x. This can be achieved by drilling a 25mm diameter h le (minimum) th ugh
the wall adjacent t the h le f r the flue duct. When a c re drill has been used t make
the h le f r the flue duct there is en ugh r m t pass the cable thr ugh the same h le
as the flue duct but care must be taken t prevent the cable c ming in t c ntact with
the flue duct. If this meth d is used it is rec mmended that a piece f r ckw l
insulati n is used t pr tect the p wer cable.
6 Once the h le f r the flue duct has been made it is rec mmended that the fitting f the
fireplace be c mpleted bef re pr ceeding with the installati n f the fire but the gas
supply must be r uted t the appliance bef re the fireplace is permanently fixed. The
three-c re mains cable must be kept accessible.

IMPORTANT When installed n the surface the v id ab ve the fireb x must be insulated t
prevent heat travelling up the rear f the fire surr und (See Figures 2 & 3).
7 Rem ve the blanking plate that c vers the rear utlet n the fireb x and temp rarily fit
the flue duct t the rear f the fireb x. The blanking plate sh uld be fitted t the pen
side utlet. Place the fireb x in p siti n within the fireplace pening. Fr m the utside,
mark the free end f the pr truding flue duct with a line flush t the uter brick surface.
Rem ve the fireb x and detach the duct. Cut the flue duct t the marked length LESS
140mm (See Figure 5). Refit the duct with the f ur screws pr vided.
8 Refit the fireb x and seal int the fireplace pening using the d uble-sided tape supplied
r alternatively a water based mastic sealant.
Note If installing with ut the fireplace in p siti n when determining the length f flue spig t
required all wance must be made f r the depth f infill panel being used.
IMPORTANT WHERE THE FLUE DUCT PASSES THROUGH A CAVITY WALL, IT IS
RECOMMENDED THAT IT SHOULD BE INSULATED ALL ROUND WITH A MATERIAL
SUCH AS ROCKWOOL. THIS WILL PREVENT ANY EXISTING CAVITY WALL
INSULATION MATERIAL FROM COMING IN TO CONTACT WITH THE FLUE DUCT.
FITTING THE FIREBOX - CAVITY FITTED
1 Measure the height f the hearth and make a mark n the wall at the same height.

2 Mark a h riz ntal line 425mm ab ve the hearth level line and a vertical line n the
centre line f the fireplace (See Figure 4). At this p int drill a pil t h le thr ugh the
cavity wall t the utside.
3 Ab ve the hearth level line draw a rectangle 540mm high and 380mm wide (See Figure
6). Cut away the plaster and inner leaf f the brickw rk at this line t exp se the uter
leaf.
4 Cut a h le thr ugh the uter leaf t accept the flue duct. This can be achieved using
either a 127mm (5'') diameter c re drill r cut a h le t the dimensi ns sh wn in Fig. 4.
5 Pr ceed as previ usly described in parts 5 t 8 n pages 6 and 7.
THE GAS SUPPLY
1 The gas supply sh uld be r uted fr m the meter t a p int c nvenient t the fireb x.
Fr m this p int r ute a length f rigid r semi-rigid pipe t the fire recess. Care sh uld
be taken t sleeve the pipe when passing thr ugh mas nry.
3 The gas supply must be r uted t the rear f the fireb x. The entry p int is a gr mmeted
h le 40mm ab ve the hearth level and 45mm t the right f the centre line f the
appliance when facing the wall it is t be fitted t . R ute the pipe under the burner and
c nnect t the pressure test elb w with the nut and live supplied.
INSTALLING THE FAN BOX - RECESSED UNIT
1 Cut a rectangular h le in the external leaf f the brick wall t the dimensi ns sh wn in
Figure 7.
2 Rem ve the fan b x c ver. Rem ve the 2 l wer self tapping screws and l sen the 2 pan
head screws l cated in the key h le sl ts (See Figure 8) which h ld the fan carrier t the
wall b x and lift away the fan carrier assembly, t gether with it's gasket and place t
ne side.

3 Feed the fan cable thr ugh the h le in the brickw rk and leave a sh rt length f cable
'hanging' in the pening made f r the fan unit.
Note CARE MUST BE TAKEN NOT TO DAMAGE THE TWO PLASTIC CONNECTORS FITTED
TO THE CABLE WHEN PULLING THEM THROUGH THE HOLE. THESE CONNECTORS
ARE FACTORY FITTED AND CANNOT BE RE-ATTACHED ON SITE.
4 Fit the flue spig t t the fan b x using the three self-tapping screws pr vided.
5 Insert the fan b x in t the wall as far as it will g and fix it in t place by screwing ut
the 3 b lts (1 in the t p, 2 in the b tt m) int the mas nry t clamp the b x in p siti n.
Using the 3 b lts, adjust the p siti n f the b x s that the fan b x duct surr unds
equally n all f ur sides the duct f the fireb x.
Note In s me cases the 'fr g' f the brick may prevent the clamping b lts fr m being
able t be tightened fully. In this case the clamping plate supplied sh uld be inserted in
the appr priate p siti n and the clamping b lts tightened n t this.
6 Take the glass fibre r pe sealing gasket and push it in t the gap between the flue duct
and the fan b x spig t. The gasket can be pushed in t the gap using a screwdriver but
care must be taken n t t push the gasket in t far. It need nly be pushed in t a
p int where the edge f the gasket is level with the inner flue duct.
7 Secure the cable gland t its bracket n the fan carrier (See Figure 9) and then c nnect
the p wer cable using the 'M lex' snap c nnect rs. Replace the fan carrier and its
gasket int the fan b x and secure in place by l cating the 'keyh le' sl ts ver the pan
head screws at the rear f the b x and using the tw l wer self tapping screws t secure
the b tt m f the carrier in p siti n. Finally tighten the tw pan head screws. Any
excess cable sh uld be pushed in t the cavity.
8 It is rec mmended that a bead f mastic be run ar und the frame f the wall b x t
ensure a water tight seal with the brickw rk.
9 Refit the wall b x c ver.
FITTING THE SEMI-RECESSED FAN SPACER
1 In cases where there is insufficient r m t recess the fan unit int the wall the fan
spacer will have t be fitted. This spacer m unts the fan partially ut f the wall s that
the spig t d es n t pr trude int the cavity.
2 Place the spacer against the wall, ensuring it is c rrectly aligned with the flue duct and
mark the p siti n f the f ur fixing h les n the wall (See Figure 10) Drill and plug the
wall at these p siti ns. Check that the spacer is the c rrect way up and fix it t the wall.
The spacer is the c rrect way up when the internal b x secti n with tw h les is at the
b tt m.

3 Rem ve the fr nt c ver fr m the fan unit and withdraw the inner fan chassis, as
previ usly described. Rem ve the three large screws fr m the t p and b tt m f the fan
b x and discard.
4 Cut a slit in the gr mmet at the rear f the fan unit (n t the side gr mmet) and feed
thr ugh the p wer cable. Push the fan unit int the spacer and secure in place using
the three self tapping screws and washers screws pr vided. The self tapping screws
sh uld pass thr ugh the bushes fr m which the large screws were rem ved.
5 Fit the gasket, c nnect the p wer cable and refit the fan chassis as previ usly described.
6 Seal the edges where the tw b xes meet and where the spacer meets the wall with
silic n mastic.
FITTING THE SURFACE MOUNTING ADAPTOR BOX
1 In cases where the fan unit is t be fitted n the surface f the utside wall an adapt r
b x will have t be fitted. The adapt r b x sh uld be fitted after the h le f r the flue
duct has been made. This will ensure c rrect alignment between the flue duct and the
fan b x.

2 Place the adapt r b x against the wall, ensuring it c rrectly aligned with the flue spig t,
and mark the p siti n f the f ur fixing h les n the wall (See Figures 5 & 11) Drill and
plug the wall in the appr priate p siti ns. Rem ve the f ur M5 screws at the rear f the
b x and retain f r use later.
3 Cut a slit in the gr mmet at the rear f the b x and feed thr ugh the p wer cable,
ensuring that the connecting plugs are protected against damage.
4 Place the adapt r b x against the wall and screw int p siti n.
5 Rem ve the fr nt c ver fr m the fan unit and withdraw the inner fan chassis, as
previ usly described. Rem ve the f ur blanking plugs fr m the rear f the fan b x and
discard.
6 Cut a slit in the gr mmet at the rear f the fan unit (n t the side gr mmet) and feed
thr ugh the p wer cable. Push the fan unit int the adapt r unit and secure in place
using the f ur M5 screws pr vided.
7 Fit the gasket, c nnect the p wer cable and refit the fan chassis as previ usly described.
8 Seal the edges where the tw b xes meet with silic n mastic.
NOTE ON BOTH RECESSED AND SURFACE MOUNTED FAN UNITS THE FAN COVER
ALSO ACTS AS THE TERMINAL GUARD AND IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO FIT ANY
ADDITIONAL GUARD. IF REQUIRED A PROTECTIVE CAGE IS AVAILABLE TO
SPECIAL ORDER.
FITTING THE BURNER UNIT
1 Check that the igniti n system functi ns c rrectly. Push in the c ntr l valve and
perate the piez igniti n mechanism and check that a spark is generated at the pil t
burner. If n spark is evident, check the c nnecti ns and the s undness f the leads.
2 Check tightness f nuts at the c ntr l-valve end f the therm c uple. CAUTION D n t
ver-tighten.
3 Plug the c nnect r n the s len ids n the underside f the burner unit t the mating
plug n the switch frame f the fire.
4 Place the burner tray in p siti n within the fireb x. The tabs n either side f the rear f
the burner sh uld be pushed n t the brackets n the fireb x and then the burner
fixed in place using the tw screws n either side f the c al retainer.
5 C nnect the gas supply pipe t the fire using the nut and live pr vided. Ensure that
the gas line is purged bef re c nnecting the pipe, as any debris left in the pipe will
cause the appliance t malfuncti n if it enters the c ntr ls.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION TO MAINS SUPPLY
1 It is rec mmended that the electrical c nnecti n t the mains supply is made via either
a 3A fused spur r an unswitched three-pin s cket and 3A fused plug.
2 The appliance is supplied with 2.5 metres f three-c re mains cable pre- wired. This
sh uld be r uted t the p wer p int as inc nspicu usly as p ssible - i.e. chased int the
plaster.
3 The electrical c nnecti ns t the switches are all pre-wired and the nly ther
c nnecti ns required are in the fan b x, which are explained in pages 9-10 f these
instructi ns.
LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE (See Figures 12 and 13)
Note This system perates with a permanent pil t. The pil t light must be established
bef re the electrical switches are perated.
1 Turn the is lating gas c ck n and switch n the electrical mains supply.
2 Push in and turn the c ntr l kn b anti-cl ckwise t the PILOT p siti n. As the kn b is
turned the piez unit will be heard t perate and a spark will be pr duced at the pil t
electr de.
Note If the pil t d es n t light, keep the kn b depressed in the PILOT p siti n f r a
sh rt peri d f time - this will purge any air in the system. Once the air has been
purged, repeat step 2 as ab ve.
3 Keep the kn b depressed f r 10 - 15 sec nds and the release. The pil t flame sh uld
remain alight.
4 If the pil t flame g es ut, repeat the pr cess, h lding d wn the c ntr l kn b f r a
slightly l nger peri d.
5 Depress the c ntr l kn b slightly and turn anti-cl ckwise t the ON p siti n.
6 Press the ON/OFF switch n the c ntr l panel n the side f the fire t the ON p siti n.
7 Press and release the START switch. The fan will start and after a sh rt peri d, during
which the system makes its safety checks, the first s len id valve will pen and the
main burner will light at the l w rate.
8 T set the main burner t the maximum rate the high/l w switch n the side f the
appliance sh uld be switched t the HIGH p siti n.
9 T turn the pil t ff, press in and turn the kn b fully cl ckwise t the PILOT p siti n.
T turn the fan ff press the ON/OFF switch t the OFF p siti n. Ensure that the fire
has turned ff.

10 GAS SOUNDNESS CHECK
Once the c rrect perati n f the c ntr ls has been pr ved a gas s undness test must
be carried ut in acc rdance with BS 6891.
TESTING THE OPERATION OF THE FAN
1 The f ll wing pr cedure tests the c rrect perati n f the fan and pressure switch.
2 C nnect the electrical mains supply t the appliance, turn n the gas supply and switch
n the fire.
3 Fr m utside, bl ck the flue pening n the fan unit. Initially the fan sh uld be heard t
speed up t try and ver c me the bl ckage. After ab ut 5 sec nds the fan will switch
ff. Rem ve the bl ckage, return ind rs and check that the fire has g ne ut. The
system can n w be restarted.
FITTING THE CERAMIC COMPONENTS
WARNING
This product uses fuel effect pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF),
which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres along with fibrous glass and mineral
wool. Excessive exposure to these materials may cause temporary irritation to
eyes, skin and respiratory tract, consequently, it makes sense to take care when
handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum.
CAUTION All the ceramic c mp nents are fragile and sh uld be handled with care.
1 Fit the ceramic pieces as sh wn in Figure 14.

ADJUSTMENT OF COALS
1 Relight the appliance and all w t burn f r 10-12 minutes.
2 Check the flame pattern and ensure that it is regular and natural l king. Using a pair
f t ngs, adjust the c als t regularise the pattern f flames. Even small adjustments t
the p siti ns f the c als add greatly t the realism.

Bottom Row.
Lay a large pebble (A) n the left hand side f the fire s that it rests n the castellated fr nt
ceramic and leans against the side f the fireb x and the middle ceramic.
Place tw small pebbles (B & C) next t it n the fr nt ceramic.
Then place an ther large pebble (D) n the fr nt ceramic and lean it against the middle
ceramic.

Please Note.
Depending n h w the pebbles actually lay in the fire, flames may impinge n the surface f
s me pebbles and cause s t marking. This is quite n rmal but unf rtunately a permanent
stain may be left n the surface. This pr blem can be minimised by gently twisting s me
pebbles with t ngs t m ve them away fr m the tips f the flames which is where the s t
marking may ccur.

DECORATIVE TRIMS
1 Place ne f the f ur magnets in each c rner f the fr nt frame f the fire.
2 When using a brass trim, the pr tective plastic c ating sh uld be peeled ff. Take care
n t t t uch the trim as finger prints will stain the brass.
3 Place the trim in place. The magnets will ensure it is held in p siti n.
THE ELECTRONIC FAN CONTROLLER
The fan unit is fitted with an electr nic c ntr l unit that m nit rs the behavi ur f the
fan during the start up pr cedure and in the event f high gusts f wind. When the fan
is switched n the c ntr ller will set it t run at high speed until the air pressure switch
senses a satisfact ry am unt f airfl w. Once the airfl w has been pr ved the fan will
sl w d wn t its perating speed. If a str ng gust f wind causes the pressure switch t
return t the 'n air' p siti n, the c ntr ller will switch ver t the high speed
setting t verc me the gust. The pressure switch will then switch back and the
c ntr ller will return the fan t its perating speed. In the event f the gust f wind
being m re persistent, the c ntr ller will maintain the fan at high speed f r
appr ximately 6 sec nds. If the pressure switch has n t sensed a return f airfl w in
this time the c ntr ller will shut d wn the wh le system. In this event the fire will g ut
and will nly relight if the ON switch n the switch panel is pressed. When first
switched on the fan may 'pulse' between high and low operating speed settings.
This is normal providing the fan runs at a steady speed after 5 - 10 minutes of use
with the fire alight.
COLD WEATHER PROBLEMS
In freezing conditions the fire maybe very slow to light. After switching the fan
on there may be a delay of between five and ten minutes before the fire will light.
In these conditions the fan will turn quite sluggishly until the fan motor has

the pressure switch. Leaving the pilot alight may allow a small amount of heat to
pass to the fan, which will help to shorten the warm up period. If the fire still

SIDE VENTING AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
These additi nal instructi ns c ver the additi nal installati n requirements f r the side
venting versi n f the Fanfare. These instructi ns must be read in c njuncti n with the
main installati n and users instructi ns that are c ntained within.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1 The citing and c nfigurati n f the flue ducting will n rmally have t be predetermined
bef re installati n c mmences. The vari us lengths f duct, elb ws and brackets sh uld
be included in a separate kit f parts fr m the supplier. Ensure all the c mp nents
required f r the installati n are available.
2 The appliance requires a depth f 130mm f r fitting which may be achieved by using
either a deep rebated mantel r a false chimney breast. (See Figure 17 and 18)
3 There must be a minimum f 25mm clearance between the flue duct and any
c mbustible material. The fixing brackets are designed t pr vide b th the meth d f
supp rting the lengths f flue duct and setting the 25mm clearance required.
4 The flue duct may exit fr m either the left r right f the appliance. The maximum
lengths permissible are sh wn in the table bel w. The blanking plate must always be
fixed t the utlet that is n t being used.

5 The standard starter duct is 500mm l ng which is sufficient f r hearth widths up t
1220mm (48"). Where a wider hearth is fitted a l nger starter duct (1000mm)

HOW THE FIXING BRACKETS WORK
1 The fixing brackets are designed s that nce they are fixed in p siti n the ducting can
simply be clipped in t place. Depending n the height ab ve fl r level that the flue
duct is p siti ned ne f the duct brackets sh wn bel w sh uld be selected. Where the
height differs fr m the standard heights, the underside f the bracket will have t be
packed ut t achieve the height required. Please rder the brackets as required (n t
supplied as standard).
2 Tw fl r fixing brackets and tw t p brackets are required with each length f side flue
ducting. A bracket sh uld be p siti ned appr ximately 150mm (6") fr m the end f each
length f duct. See Figure 19. Please rder these brackets as required fr m Verine
3 Once the r ute f the ducting has been determined the brackets can be fixed in p siti n
ready t accept the ducting. The brackets sh uld be fixed in place by either drilling a
h le thr ugh the b tt m f the bracket and then screwing it in place r alternatively a
suitable adhesive may be used.
INSTALLATION OF APPLIANCE AND FLUE DUCTING (SEE FIGURES 20, 21 22 & 23)
1 The rder in which the vari us parts f the system are installed is n t critical and the
installer can decide which part t install first. The f ll wing instructi ns give a
suggested rder that may r may n t be adhered t .
2 C nnect the 500mm starter flue duct t the side f the fireb x fr m the left r right
hand side, as required. The blanking plate sh uld be fixed t the utlet that is n t being
used with the f ur self tapping screws pr vided. Place the hearth in the desired p siti n
and place the fireb x centrally n the hearth, pushed against the wall.
3 Place the first tw fixing brackets in place as described in Secti n 2, ready t accept the
next length f ducting. Place a c nnecting sleeve t gether with its sealing gasket ver
the end f the duct. Clip the next length f ducting in place and slide in t the
c nnecting sleeve. Slide the sleeve in t p siti n, such that it is l cated centrally
between the tw lengths f duct. Drill thr ugh the sleeve with the drill bit supplied and
screw in place using the self tapping screws supplied.
IMPORTANT A GAP OF APPROXIMATELY 3mm MUST BE LEFT BETWEEN THE
TWO LENGTHS OF DUCTING TO ALLOW FOR EXPANSION.

5 Additi nal lengths f ducting can be added as required. Where necessary, they will have
t be cut t give the length required. The ducting must be cut as square as p ssible t
ensure c rrect c nnecti n.

7 The last secti n f ducting sh uld n t be cut until the h le f r the fan unit has been
made. Once the h le is cut, the last secti n sh uld be put in place and it must be
marked and cut t length as described previ usly in these instructi ns.
8 Once the last secti n f ducting is cut t the required length, it sh uld be placed in t
p siti n and be fitted in t the fan unit as described previ usly in these instructi ns.
ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
1 The 3 c re, mains supply cable sh uld be r uted t the supply as inc nspicu usly as
p ssible. If the supply p int is n the same side f the fireb x as the flue duct, the cable
can be hidden within the duct cladding. If the supply is n the pp site side, either
encl sing in c nduit r chasing in t the plaster sh uld hide the cable.
2 The 12 c re, grey fan cable sh uld be r uted t the fan unit al ng the supp rt brackets,
as sh wn in Figure 24. The standard length f cable fitted t the fireb x will n rmally
nly be sufficient f r rear venting applicati ns and theref re, f r m st side venting
applicati ns an extensi n cable will be required. The extensi n cable is fitted by simply
c nnecting it in t the mating plugs already fitted t the cable n the fireb x.
3 The cable sh uld be r uted thr ugh the wall and in t the fan b x as described in the
main set f instructi ns.
COVERING THE FLUE DUCTING
1 The duct brackets are designed t give a 25mm gap between the ducting and any
c mbustible material.
It is essential that bef re the flue ducting is "b xed in" a c vering f insulati n material,
such as r ckw l, is wrapped ar und the ducting.
2 Once the ducting has been fully insulated, it can be "b xed in". A material such as MDF
sh uld be cut t size and placed in p siti n against the supp rt brackets. The p siti n
