Signal Words:
This manual uses SIGNAL WORDS to identify situations likely to result in personal injury or property
damage. These words also indicate the seriousness of those injuries. Signal words used in this manual
appear below along with their definitions.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, WILL result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY. Use of this signal word is limited to the most extreme
situations.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY.
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in MINOR or
MODERATE injury.
Identifies practices likely to result in product/property damage, such as operation that
might damage the product.
Hazards of Improper Use:
Vestil diligently strives to identify foreseeable hazards associated with the use of its products. However,
material handling is inherently dangerous and no manual can address every conceivable risk. The end-
user ultimately is responsible for exercising sound judgment at all times.
If this product is used improperly or carelessly, serious personal injuries or death might result.
Read and understand the entire manual before assembling, installing, using or servicing this gate system.
Keep the bottom gate down at all times except when placing or removing materials inside the gate.
DO NOT modify the product in any way without first obtaining written approval from Vestil. Unapproved
modifications automatically void the Limited Warranty (see p. 11) and might make the product unsafe to use.
Inspect the product as described in the “Inspecting and Maintaining the System” section on p. 10. DO
NOT use this product if the gate system is damaged. Examples of damage include, but are not limited to, the
following: 1) Cracked, broken or significantly deformed frame members; 2) cracked welds; 3) corrosion,
severe wear, or other condition that interferes with normal operating condition. Replace every part that fails
to pass an inspection. DO NOT use the product until it is fully restored to normal condition. If the gate cannot
be restored to normal condition, permanently remove it from service.
DO NOT use this device UNLESS all labels (see “Labeling Diagram”, p. 10) are readable and
undamaged.
Proper maintenance is essential for this product to remain in normal condition for as long as
possible.
oKeep the product clean & dry.
oPeriodically lubricate pivot points.
oRoutinely check the soundness of the entire structure. All frame members should be rigid and straight.
Fasteners should be securely connected and undamaged.

Select a location for the mezzanine gate system that is close to the edge of the upper level. Assemble the gate
following the instructions on pages 8 and 9. Move the gate assembly into position and anchor it to the surface by
installing 3/8” anchor bolts through the 4 bolt holes in each post mounting bracket. The length of the anchor bolts
should be determined by your building engineer.

Assembling the Gate System:
At least 2 people should work together to assemble this gate system. Use the “Installation diagram” on page 8 to
determine how to orient the mezzanine gate system for your application. Numbers in parentheses () correspond to
item numbers in the parts lists on p. 4-7.
Step 1: Install the side gates (11). As shown in the
diagrams above and below, side gates should be 611/2in.
apart (measured to inside edges of mounting brackets).
Secure the gates to the surface with 3/8in. flat washers
and anchor bolts of appropriate length as determined by
your building engineer. Orient the gates so that the bolt
holes in the top rails are at the same end. The bolt holes
should also be opposite the edge of the mezzanine.

Using the Gate System:
Place materials, e.g. palletized goods, between the side gates. Pull down the top gate and confirm that its legs
contact the floor. After the load has been moved, put the bottom gate down.
Inspecting and Maintaining the System:
Written record — after installing the product and before using it for the first time, make a written record that
describes its appearance and functions. Raise and lower the top and bottom gates. Describe the motion of the
gates and any sounds heard as they rotate. Thoroughly photograph the unit and each label. Add the photos to the
record. Describe where each label is located. This record establishes normal condition. When conducting the
following inspections, compare your observations to the record to determine if the system is in normal condition. Do
not use it unless it is in normal condition. Cosmetic changes, like damaged paint/powder coat do not constitute
changes from normal condition. However, touchup paint should be applied to all affected areas as soon as
damage occurs. Contact Technical Service (contact information appears on the cover page) if you have questions
that are not addressed in these instructions.
Inspect the following components at least once per month:
1. Gates: inspect each gate for damage such as bends, breaks, corrosion, and damage caused by impacts with
vehicles or other objects. Confirm that all welds are intact.
2. Fasteners/hardware: closely examine all fasteners including anchor bolts. Make sure that all connections are
solid. Tighten connections as necessary. Inspect the surface where anchor bolts are installed for damage. If the
surface is damaged in a way that affects the connection with one or more anchor bolts and cannot be repaired,
then the mezzanine system will have to be disassembled and reinstalled in another location. Pay particular
attention to the pivot point connections (Step 2 on p. 9). Make sure that the bolts and spacers are not bent,
rusty, cracked, etc. Replace any fastener that is not in normal condition.
3. Support braces: inspect both braces. Look for cracks, warps, bends, etc. Replace a brace if it is damaged.
Labeling Diagram:
The unit should be labeled as shown in the diagrams. Label
content and location are subject to change so your product might
not be labeled exactly as shown. Thoroughly photograph the unit
when you install it as discussed in the “Written Record” portion of
the Inspections and Maintenance section on p. 10. Make sure
that your record includes a photograph of each label. Replace
any label that is, or later becomes, damaged, missing, or not
easily readable (e.g. faded). To order replacement labels,
contact the technical service and parts department online at
http://www.vestilmfg.com/parts_info.htm. Alternatively, request
replacement parts and/or service by calling (260) 665-7586 and
asking the operator to connect you to the Parts Department.
Label 208 (both sides)
Step 5: Press plastic end caps (10) into the open ends of both the top gate and bottom gate (locations marked
with arrows).

send the entire product, or just the defective part (or parts), to its facility in Angola, IN.
What is covered under the warranty?
The warranty covers defects in the following original, dynamic parts: motors, hydraulic pumps, motor controllers, and
cylinders. It also covers defects in original parts that wear under normal usage conditions (“wearing parts”), such as
bearings, hoses, wheels, seals, brushes, and batteries.
How long is the warranty period?
The warranty period for original dynamic components is 90 days. For wearing parts, the warranty period is 90 days.

allowed by law. Any implied warranty not disclaimed is limited in scope to the terms of this Limited Warranty. Vestil makes
no warranty or representation that this product complies with any state or local design, performance, or safety code or
standard. Noncompliance with any such code or standard is not a defect in material or workmanship.
