■Work on gas installations must only be carried out by

Intended use
The appliance is intended solely for installation and
operation in sealed unvented heating systems, with
due attention paid to the associated installation, serv-
ice and operating instructions. The appliance is inten-
ded exclusively for steam generation and for heating
water in accordance with EN 12953 and AGFW data-
sheet FW510 (VdTÜV datasheet TCh 1466).
Commercial or industrial use for a purpose other than
steam generation or the heating of water shall be
deemed inappropriate.
All other use is deemed inappropriate. Any resulting
losses are excluded from the manufacturer's liability.
Any usage beyond this must be approved by the man-
ufacturer in each individual case.
Intended use presupposes that a permanent installa-
tion in conjunction with permissible components
designed for this purpose has been carried out.
Intended use also includes adherence to maintenance
and inspection intervals.
Storing Viessmann shell boilers
Recommendation for corrosion prevention
Please follow all instructions carefully.
Applicability of instructions
Storage of boilers until system installation.
General
■Store Viessmann shell boilers in closed rooms, pro-
tected from weather influences and under dry condi-
tions.
■The room temperature must not fall below 0 °C or
exceed 50 °C.
■Viessmann shell boilers are delivered equipped with
blank flanges or protective caps on the water side,
for protection against the ingress of foreign bodies.
■To prevent the formation of condensate on the boiler:
–Remove the transport packaging after delivery or
–Protect the boiler against moisture by using a des-
iccant.
Storage period > 4 weeks
■Protect the interior of the shell boiler against mois-
ture. Use a desiccant, e.g. silica gel, on the flue gas
and water side.
■Use the appropriate amount of desiccant for the vol-
ume of the boiler.
Note
Observe the desiccant manufacturer's instructions.
■Check the effectiveness of the desiccant at regular
intervals.
■Ensure that the desiccant does not come into contact
with the boiler material.
Recommendation
Fill suitable containers with desiccant. Suspend the
containers in the boiler body.
■Instead of extracting the moisture on the flue gas
side by means of a desiccant, a dryer with air circula-
tion can also be used.
■Coat the dry flue gas side of the shell boiler with a
thin film of graphite or varnish.

Transporting a shell boiler
Danger
Inappropriate handling of the boiler may lead to
accidents. There is a risk of injury.
Only use the slinging points. Observe all the
applicable regulations on accident prevention.

Recommendation for dimension f
Leave one boiler length (x1) of space in front of the
boiler door to extract the turbulators (if fitted) and for
cleaning.
Observe the stated dimensions to ensure straightfor-
ward installation and maintenance.
Observe the clearances with regard to the regulations
applicable at the installation site. Allow for equipment
and accessories.
The installation surface must be level. Level the boiler
horizontally.

Installing the pipework
Danger
Risk of injury when opening pressurised boiler
flue connections.
Do not open boiler flue connections until they
are depressurised and have cooled down.
!Please note
Unsuitable water quality can damage the boiler
shell.
Only fill the boiler with water that complies with
the "Standard values for water quality" (see
service instructions).

connectors on the boiler.
Note
Install all pipe connections free of load and torque
stress.

necting the boiler to an existing system).

Leaks can result in poisoning through escaping
gas.
Check unused boiler apertures and gas lines for
tightness. Reseal if required.

1. Connect the flue outlet to the flue system using a
flue pipe, ensuring favourable flow characteristics.
2. Position the test port (approx. 10 mm 7) down-
stream of the flue outlet, at a distance of 2 to 3
times the flue pipe diameter.
3. Seal the flue pipe.
Note
Connect all flue pipes free of load and torque
stress. Flue pipes must be connected so they are
gas-tight.
4. Insulate the flue pipe.
Note
Flue gas flange with mating flange is available as
an option.

Note on condensate drain
■Condensate will form in the flue system. Return of
this condensate must be prevented on site. This is
done by taking appropriate steps, e.g. by installing a
condensate trap.
■Close the KOA condensate drain connectors when
not in use. They are designed for draining any con-
densate collected during the start up phase.
Fitting the sight glass

Secure the sight glass to the connector without seal-
ant.
The use of the slide control must not skew the sight
glass.
!Please note
Hot surfaces can lead to burns.
Only open the slider in the sight glass for brief
inspection of the flame.
Observe occupational safety. Wear protective
clothing where necessary.

If the additionally supplied burner plate was not pre-
drilled at the factory, drill the burner fixing holes into
the burner plate and cut out the aperture for the flame
head.
For correct burner operation, safeguard the required
flame head length.

1. For burner connection, secure burner plate B to
the boiler flange with screws.
2. Secure the burner to the burner plate with screws.
Note
For differing dimensions, trim the cut-out in the
thermal insulation according to the flame head
diameter.
3. If required, fill the annular gap between burner
head and thermal insulation with heat resistant
filler material (standard delivery).
Note
Thermal insulation blocks and loose thermal insu-
lation are supplied either inside the reversing
chambers of the boiler doors or inside the flame
tube.
4. Close the boiler doors and inspection port at the
back of the boiler.

The information and values in the tables relate to the
following general conditions:
■O2 content in dry flue gas
–For natural gas: 3.0 % by vol.
–For EL fuel oil: 3.0 % by vol.
■Flow/return temperature: 120/80 °C
■100 % load
■Installation altitude: < 500 m above sea level
■Combustion air temperature: 25 °C
Applicable to M72B:
■O2 content in dry flue gas
–For natural gas: 2.1 % by vol.
–For EL fuel oil: 2.7 % by vol.
