Only a perfectly tuned transmission can transform
the virtues of a first-class engine into driving comfort
and pleasure. Which is why the Phaeton is equipped
with not one but several sophisticated drive systems,
ensuring that optimum engine performance is
delivered consistently on the road. For example,
Continuous Damping Control (CDC ), an electronically
regulated air suspension is fitted as standard,
adapting to road conditions automatically and
delivering the ultimate in smoothness of ride. At
higher speeds the chassis is lowered, and raised when
bumpy surfaces are encountered. In Comfort mode,
soft damping ensures a more comfortable ride, while
the suspension is automatically stiffened to improve
stability during high speed cornering. The chassis is
also equipped with automatic ride-height control,
which recognises and levels out differences in weight
distribution, resulting in a more even ride.
As important as these independent assistance
systems are, however, a car will only provide you with
driving pleasure if it can take your individual driving
style into account. This is where the Dynamic Shift
Programme comes in, recognising your preferred
driving behaviour and synchronising the gear changes
accordingly. For this, a five-speed (6.0 W12) or a six-
speed tiptronic automatic gearbox (4.2 V8/3.0 V6 TDI
DPF) is deployed.
Smooth: Continuous
Damping Control (CDC )
electronically regulated
air suspension, fitted as
standard, automatically
raises the chassis by up to
25 mm over bumpy surfaces,
ensuring the highest levels
of driving comfort.
Aerodynamic: at higher
speeds, the Continuous
Damping Control (CDC),
automatically lowers the
chassis by up to 15 mm,
reducing drag.
Perfectly matched:
the six-speed tiptronic
automatic gearbox
(4.2 V8/3.0 V6 TDI DPF)
adapts to your individual
driving style and
automatically selects the
relevant gear changes.
A further technical highlight is the intelligent 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, also
part of the Phaeton’s standard specification. It redistributes drive power to the individual
wheel/wheels that needs it most, reacting within fractions of a second, depending on
the road conditions, giving greater traction especially in bad weather. For the driver
this ensures improved safety, greater drive and better road holding on all surfaces –
not to mention the pleasure of driving rather than simply travelling to your destination.
