The Phaeton. In Greek mythology, Phaeton was the son of
Helios, the sun god. Helios had a magnificent sun carriage
pulled by wild horses and, legend has it, Phaeton insisted
on taking control of the carriage. Unfortunately, he was
unable to either handle the carriage or tame its lively
horses. Disaster was averted only by the intervention of
Zeus, his godfather, who managed to bring the carriage
to a stop. Since then, the legend of Phaeton has been a
symbol for the human desire to tread new paths. In the
19th century, the Phaeton was the name for a noble coach
that was driven not by coachmen but by the master
himself. Today the name stands for luxurious travel,
precision craftsmanship and state of the art engineering
in the form of the Volkswagen Phaeton.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, which is why exterior styling is so important. In fact, your first
impression is formed within just three seconds – thankfully, that’s all the time you’ll need to get the measure of the Phaeton.
If the design of a car is an expression of its personality, the Phaeton is characterised by uncompromising attention to
detail, high quality materials and immaculate workmanship. From the sleek, contoured bonnet and the distinctive C-pillar
to the ‘Cherry red’ rear light clusters, from the discreet chrome trim and body-coloured door mirrors to the close fit of the
panels, each small detail complements the harmony of the overall design. And like a true thoroughbred, agility and
performance is inherent from every angle. Just one glance at the chrome-trimmed radiator grille, streamlined bumpers and
expressive Xenon dipped beam headlights gives you a sense of what is to come. Understated and sleek, every aspect of the
Phaeton’s exterior design exudes elegance, power and purit y of form – giving you a glimpse into its inner qualities as well as
its more obvious charms.
Elegant: the clear
flowing lines of the
bonnet, chrome-
trimmed radiator grille
and optional Bi-Xenon
headlights with
dynamic curve lighting,
LED daytime running
lights and headlight
washers (standard on
6.0 W12) all combine
to produce the
distinctive, charismatic
face of the Phaeton.
Innovative: ‘Cherry red’
rear light clusters,
incorporating LED
technology, give an
unmistakable visual
appearance, enhancing
the purit y of the
rear design.
Stylish: twin exhaust
tailpipes, discreetly
positioned in the rear
bumper, emphasise the
power and dynamics
of the 6.0 W12.
Intelligent: ‘Keyless
entry and keyless start’,
the optional lock and
start system recognises
your Phaeton’s key,
even when it’s in
your pocket.

Interior design is absolutely key in ensuring that
function and safety go hand in hand, especially when you
have a car offering so many technologically advanced
features as the Phaeton.
When driving a Phaeton for the first time, you may be
surprised to learn just how quickly each hand movement
finds the appropriate control as a matter of course.
Located behind the steering wheel, are a number of
classically designed, round instrument panels, arranged
in a clear, logical manner. They are controlled by a well
structured, five inch multifunction computer with colour
display, providing the driver with important navigation
and journey details, such as average speed, ambient
temperature and current or average fuel consumption.
Likewise, the centre console, with its gearshift gate and
Infotainment system, is well designed and user-friendly,
every control and every switch located where you would
intuitively expect it to be, enabling you to assimilate
information with minimal effort.
Of course, this well ordered, logical approach not only
makes sense from a functional and ergonomic perspective.
It also facilitates aesthetic appeal and an unparalleled
level of elegance, the spacious design allowing plenty of
space for an abundance of highly polished wood,
gleaming chrome and fine leather upholstery. It is these
interior luxuries that really provide the feel-good factor,
although it may still surprise you to learn that the most
admired detail of the Phaeton’s interior is the
unostentatious, timelessly beautiful, analogue clock.
Technology may be essential, but there is always a place
for classic design.
Perfectly crafted,
harmoniously arranged
and fundamentally well
designed, each piece of
equipment displays a
wealth of attributes, all
helping to ensure the
well-being of passengers
and driver alike.
Standard features
include 4Zone electronic
climate control, allowing
four separate climate
zones; front seats with
12-way electric
adjustment; luxurious
‘Vienna’ leather
upholstery; and exclusive
‘Eucalyptus’ wood inlays
in the doors, centre
console and dashboard.
C H A S S I S .
Only a perfectly tuned transmission can transform
the virtues of a first-class engine into driving comfort
and pleasure. Which is why the Phaeton is equipped
with not one but several sophisticated drive systems,
ensuring that optimum engine performance is
delivered consistently on the road. For example,
Continuous Damping Control (CDC ), an electronically
regulated air suspension is fitted as standard,
adapting to road conditions automatically and
delivering the ultimate in smoothness of ride. At
higher speeds the chassis is lowered, and raised when
bumpy surfaces are encountered. In Comfort mode,
soft damping ensures a more comfortable ride, while
the suspension is automatically stiffened to improve
stability during high speed cornering. The chassis is
also equipped with automatic ride-height control,
which recognises and levels out differences in weight
distribution, resulting in a more even ride.
As important as these independent assistance
systems are, however, a car will only provide you with
driving pleasure if it can take your individual driving
style into account. This is where the Dynamic Shift
Programme comes in, recognising your preferred
driving behaviour and synchronising the gear changes
accordingly. For this, a five-speed (6.0 W12) or a six-
speed tiptronic automatic gearbox (4.2 V8/3.0 V6 TDI
DPF) is deployed.
Smooth: Continuous
Damping Control (CDC )
electronically regulated
air suspension, fitted as
standard, automatically
raises the chassis by up to
25 mm over bumpy surfaces,
ensuring the highest levels
of driving comfort.
Aerodynamic: at higher
speeds, the Continuous
Damping Control (CDC),
automatically lowers the
chassis by up to 15 mm,
reducing drag.
Perfectly matched:
the six-speed tiptronic
automatic gearbox
(4.2 V8/3.0 V6 TDI DPF)
adapts to your individual
driving style and
automatically selects the
relevant gear changes.
A further technical highlight is the intelligent 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, also
part of the Phaeton’s standard specification. It redistributes drive power to the individual
wheel/wheels that needs it most, reacting within fractions of a second, depending on
the road conditions, giving greater traction especially in bad weather. For the driver
this ensures improved safety, greater drive and better road holding on all surfaces –
not to mention the pleasure of driving rather than simply travelling to your destination.

The innovative 18-way electrically adjusted front
seats provide an even greater opportunity for maximising
comfort and are fitted as standard in the Phaeton 6.0
W12. Offering the perfect opportunit y to totally relax,
features include an electronic massage function with
active lumbar support, which can be set to gently
massage your back muscles as you drive, and an
electronic climate function that gently controls the
temperature of the seat, using a separate fan mechanism
to circulate warm or cool air as appropriate. Additional
settings enabling you to adjust the upper part of the
backrest, seat depth and head restraints, providing you
with the finest degree of control you could ask for. Never
has seating comfort been so perfectly attuned to your
individual requirements.
Front seats in the Phaeton V6 TDI DPF and V8 models
feature 12-way electric adjustment, enabling you to alter
the seat height, seat and backrest angle, and distance to
the dashboard. This allows you to find the ideal seating
position for your body measurements and spine, ensuring
you have optimum side and lumbar support. Carefully
designed to provide ease of use, the operating mechanism
is located on the outer edge of the seat.
Seats in the Phaeton are more than just places to sit in
the front or rear cabin. Take the optional Memory pack
(standard on 6.0 W12), for example, designed to make
getting into the Phaeton as easy and pleasant an
experience as possible. It not only stores individual seat
settings and the desired positions of the seat belt, interior
rear-view mirror and door mirrors, but also automatically
moves the steering column forward to create more space.
