1. Use and Application
Your Protank is a premium quality, indoor, mains pressure domestic hot water cylinder built tough to provide many
years of trouble free, high pressure hot water.
Protank installation, servicing and repairs should all be carried out only by a qualified tradesperson. Improper
installation, adjustment, alteration, service or maintenance is illegal, will void any warranty and can cause property
damage, personal injury or loss of life..
Features;
• Manufactured from premium grade 2304 Duplex stainless steel with a 20 year limited warranty (refer warranty
terms and conditions for details).
• 120L, 180L, 250L, 300L, 350L and 400L options
• Available with or without the Caleffi ‘direct mount mono-block’ combo set which can save up to 50% in
installation time.
• Top entry and exit ports for easy reach and narrow installation spaces.
• A concealed 2304 Duplex stainless steel dip tube takes the cold to the bottom of the tank.
• TPR and cold water expansion valve vertically aligned for easy waste connection.
• The direct mount mono-block manifold features a return port for easy recirculating ring main configuration.
• 20mm or 25mm high flow ports according to tank size.
• Dual elements on models 250L and over.
• Two direct solar ports and three thermostat probe pockets on models 250L and over.
• Textured white powder coated external finish
2. Essential Installation Requirements
Drip Trays
A hot cylinder is a vessel containing water which has the potential to unexpectedly leak water. To minimise damage
to other areas of your home, ensure that your cylinder has been installed with a drip tray – consequential damage
resulting from the absence of a drip tray will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Installation Standards
• Cylinders shall be installed in accordance with:
• Manufacturer’s installation instructions contained within this document.
• Current AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3500, and G12/AS1
• Local regulations and municipal building codes
3. Safety Devices
Your Protank hot water cylinder is fitted with the following safety equipment which should remain in perfect
working order;
Temperature & Pressure and Relief (TPR) Valve
Ensures the water remains at a safe pressure and temperature.
Automatic Thermostat
Maintains the set water temperature inside the cylinder.
Heating Element Over-Temperature Cut-out.
In the case of a standard cylinder (not installed in a solar application), the operation of the thermal cut-out can
indicate a dangerous situation. Do not reset the thermal cut-out until the water heater has been serviced by a
suitably qualified tradesperson
Cylinder Thermostat Setting
To meet the New Zealand G12 Building Code requirement to disinfect water for legionella bacteria, the cylinder
thermostat has been set to 62 °C.

4. User Safety
Element cover
Do not remove the element cover as this will expose 230 V wiring and must only be removed by a suitably qualified
tradesperson.
Thermostat Setting
Must only be adjusted by an electrician or other suitably qualified tradesperson.
Damaged Components
If any component is damaged, it must be replaced by a suitably qualified tradesperson using Protank replacement
parts only.
Hot Pipe Work
Care should be taken not to touch the pipe work around the cylinder as it could cause scalding.
Turning the Cylinder Off and On
If you plan to be away for an extended period it makes sense to switch the power supply off. When switching back
on, remember that the cylinder will take a few hours to re-heat.
Draining and Filling the Cylinder
This should only be performed by a qualified tradesperson.
5. Pipe Work
It is the installer’s responsibility to adequately size the distribution pipe work to ensure sufficient performance
from all outlet fittings. Water pipe sizing should be performed in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.4 and/or G12 AS1.
Contact Waterware for advice on system sizing and design.
6. Maintenance and Servicing
Hot water systems require regular maintenance and servicing to ensure longevity and trouble free operation. We
recommend the following procedures be followed;
Every 6 Months:
Operate and vent water from the temperature & pressure relief* valve.
Every 5 Years Thereafter:
Inspect all connections and the heating element** if installed in hard water areas.
*TPR Valve
This valve is the highest mounted valve on the side of the cylinder and is an essential safety valve. It works by
automatically venting hot water if the temperature or pressure of the water in the cylinder exceeds its presetting.
Rotate the red knob approximately ¼ of a turn and hold in that position for 5 seconds while hot water is vented
into the drain. This helps clear any naturally occurring lime deposits that may cause it to malfunction. If it fails to
vent any water or continues to vent water when released, immediately switch off the power and call a qualified
tradesperson to arrange an inspection.
**Heating Element
In hard water areas the element(s) may need to be periodically descaled by a suitably qualified tradesperson. To do
this the unit must be drained and the element(s) removed.
7. Troubleshooting
Do not attempt to carry out any work other than that mentioned in this troubleshooting section. If you have any
other faults or problems, please contact qualified tradesperson or Waterware.
No hot water
• Is there an electricity supply to the cylinder?
• Check that the isolating switch marked ‘hot water’ or ‘water heater’, at the meter box, is switched on. Also
check any isolating switches near the water heater are switched on.
• Check the fuse or circuit breaker marked ‘hot water’ or ‘water heater’ at the meter box. Repeated failure

of the fuse or tripping of the circuit breaker indicates a fault, which must be investigated by an authorised
tradesperson.
Lack of hot water reducing to warm water
• Are you using more hot water than you think?
• It is sometimes difficult to judge how much hot water your shower or other outlets use by observation
alone. Place a measured bucket under your shower for ten seconds and multiply by six to determine the
amount of water produced over a minute. Typical showers range from 8-12 L/min and basins 6-8 L/min, if
your result is significantly more you may want to consider installing a more efficient outlet or after market
flow restrictors.
• Cold water relief valve discharging continuously?
• As a hot water cylinder reheats after use it is normal for the cold water relief valve to discharge a small
quantity of water through the drain line. If water is discharging continuously there may be a fault with one
of the valves which needs to be rectified by a qualified tradesperson.
Water is too hot
• If possible check the temperature of the water coming out of a hot outlet with a thermometer.
• If it is higher than 55 °C contact a qualified tradesperson for advice.
High electricity bills
• In addition to any of the above reasons;
• Check your electricity tariff hasn’t changed.
• Do you have an unknown leak in the system?
• Ensure every tap and outlet is turned off and check your water meter to ensure it is not still flowing.
8. Water Quality
Some NZ water supplies are particularly aggressive and can cause premature damage and reduced life expectancy
for hot water cylinders or any other appliance connected to them. Protank hot water cylinders are manufactured by
RM Cylinders in the UK from the highest quality Duplex 2304 stainless steel which is the most corrosion resistant
cylinder available in NZ.
Pitting Corrosion
Although Duplex 2304 has a very high resistance to pitting corrosion, it is not completely immune and corrosion can
still occur if the water supply has a high percentage of dissolved solids present. It is advised in areas with a high
concentration of dissolved solids in the water supply that consultation with water quality and filtration experts be
undertaken.
Hard Water
Hard water (containing calcium carbonate) can cause scaling on hot surfaces and we recommend a water storage
temperature of no more than 65 °C to minimise scale build-up. Material quality cannot influence damage due to
scaling therefore we offer no guarantee against it occurring. Scale reducing or water softening devices should be
considered in hard water areas.
Water Quality and Impurity Limits
Protank warranty conditions require the following minimum water quality and impurity limits are not exceeded;
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Up to 600 mg/L or ppm
Total Hardness CaCO3: Up to 200 mg/L or ppm
Dissolved (free) CO3: Up to 25 mg/L or ppm
pH: 6.5-8.5
Langelier Index: Between -1.0-0.8

Most metropolitan water supplies fall within these limits. If you are unsure about water quality contact Waterware
for details of an authorised water testing agency
Sludge or Foreign Matter
If sludge or foreign matter is present in the water supply, a suitable filter should be incorporated in the water
supply.
Problematic Locations
Some examples of areas where water quality issues are known;
• Hard water (areas including Whanganui)
• Aggressive water (areas including Christchurch)
• Both hard and aggressive water (some bore water)
9. ‘Single Domestic Residence’ Limited Warranty
A ‘Single Domestic Residence’ installation is defined as an installation where the hot water cylinder with a factory
set thermostat delivers hot water to a privately owned single family residential dwelling which is not used for
commercial purposes. All terms of the warranty, subject to the conditions below, are effective from the date of
installation if proof of installation date can be provided. Where the date of installation is not known or cannot be
proven, the warranty will commence one month after proof of purchase date.
Protank Excluding Valves and Element
5 YEARS FREE PARTS and LABOUR costs to replace or repair the cylinder if it fails due to manufacturing
defect.
Followed by;
5 YEARS FREE PARTS ONLY costs (excluding labour) to replace or repair the cylinder if it fails due to
manufacturing defect. Followed by;
10 YEARS *PRO-RATA PARTS ONLY reducing costs (excluding labour) according to the below formula, to
replace or repair the cylinder if it fails due to manufacturing defect.
*Pro-Rata Formula = Original purchase price x remaining warranty in years ÷ total warranty period of the
cylinder.
Caleffi Valves (excluding any 3rd party valves)
5 YEARS FREE PARTS and LABOUR costs to replace or repair any valve that fails due to manufacturing
defect.
Protank Element Only;
12 MONTHS FREE PARTS and LABOUR costs to replace or repair the element if it fails due to manufacturing
defect.
General Warranty Terms and Conditions
Waterware reserves the right to make modifications and change specifications and its parts without
notice.
If the cylinder is being acquired for personal, domestic or household use, this warranty does not limit any
consumer rights or guarantees that may apply under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. If the product
is being acquired for the purposes of a business, the provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993
do not apply and no other warranties (either express or implied by law) apart from those stated in this
warranty document apply.

Specific Warranty Terms and Conditions
1. All terms of this warranty are effective from the installation date or purchase date plus one month. Waterware
reserves the right to verify this date.
2. All Protank cylinders must be installed, commissioned, serviced, repaired and removed in accordance with the
installation instructions contained in this document, local regulations, and municipal building codes by persons
authorised to do so.
3. All Protank cylinders must be operated and maintained in accordance with all instructions contained in this
document.
4. The warranty applies only to the components supplied by Waterware and does not extend to 3rd party
components not supplied with Protank.
5. Where the cylinder has not been installed in accordance with the installation instructions or installed such that
normal service access is difficult or inadequate, Waterware will not be responsible for rectification or the costs
to rectify and a service charge may apply (for example, removal of cupboards, doors, walls, or the use of special
equipment to move components, but not limited to these). If at the discretion of Waterware the installation is
deemed illegal or access is dangerous, service will be refused.
6. The cylinder warranty is for the period indicated in this document. Replaced or repaired components and or
complete replacements will carry a new warranty.
7. Waterware reserve the right to have the installed product returned to the factory for inspection if required.
8. Where the cylinder is installed outside the metropolitan area or further than 40 km from a Waterware
nominated service agent, travel costs shall be the owner’s responsibility.
9. Waterware reserves the right to replace the cylinder for another type if upon inspection it is deemed another
cylinder of a different type is more suitable.
Warranty Exclusions
The following exclusions may cause the warranty to become void and will result in a service charge and costs of
parts (if required).
1. Accidental damage and acts of God.
2. Failure due to abuse or misuse, improper maintenance or improper storage.
3. Failure due to incorrect or unauthorised installations.
4. Failure or damage caused by alterations, service or repair work carried out by persons other than those
authorised by Waterware.
5. Where the cylinder has failed directly or indirectly as a result of poor water quality outside the limits specified
in this document.
6. Where it is found that there is no fault with the cylinder and the issue is related to the installation or is due to
power failure.
7. Subject to any statutory provisions to the contrary, Waterware does not accept:
i. Liability for consequential damage or any incidental expenses resulting from any breach of the warranty,
ii. Claims for damage to building or any other consequential loss either directly or indirectly due to leaks or any
other faults.
