Dead Level® Trench Drains
For Pre-Sloped Trench Drains

General Note: Please DO NOT separate channels from frames.
Channel and frame sections arrive to the jobsite preassembled in a specific
sequence to meet your project design requirements. They are not interchangeable
between sections and separating and reassembling them may cause installation
errors. If they accidentally become separated, please contact your Watts representative for technical
support with any questions.
1. Installation Diagram
1.1 Locate and save the installation diagram from the hardware box.
If you cannot find your installation diagram contact your Watts
representative for another copy.
2. Excavation
2.1 Excavate to allow a minimum 4" concrete pour below, and on both sides of
the trench drain and below a catch basin, if used.

3.5 Turn the catch basin over and set to appropriate line and grade per the
construction plans.
3.6 If a catch basin is not used, pipe connections are made to the bottom of the
channel, or to an end cap. Drill through the molded pipe hub with a 4" hole
saw or reciprocating saw, taking care not to rake the inside wall of the hub.
Make No Hub pipe connections with a suitable coupling (by others).
4. Layout
4.1 Refer to the installation diagram.
4.2 Working from the deepest outlet connection(s) back upstream, lay the trench
drain sections alongside the open trench per the labels on each section and
the installation diagram.
4.3 Each channel and frame section is also marked with arrows, indicating the
direction of flow. Confirm they are all pointing per the flow shown on the
installation diagram.
5. Rebar Anchoring & Leveling of Sections
5.1 Establish accurate line and grade reference and control using your preferred
method-e.g. string line, laser level, etc.
5.2 Starting from the outlet or catch basin, set the first structural frame and channel
section shown on the installation diagram on the desired control line along the
excavated trench.

3. Catch Basins & Piping Connections
3.1 Catch basins, if used, should be set first. If no catch basin is used
skip to step 3.6.
3.2 Using a reciprocating or hole saw, remove the circular pipe connection cutout(s)
where the basin will connect to discharge piping.
3.3 Invert the catch basin on a flat surface, and butt the section(s) shown on the
installation drawing against the pattern on the basin. Use a reciprocating saw
to remove the cutout on the basin.
3.4 With the cutout correctly removed, the channel tongue should slide inside the
hole in the basin, with the channel flange flush against basin's exterior wall (Fig. A).

5.5 Repeat steps 5.2 through 5.4 with the next section(s) shown on the installation
diagram until run is complete.
6. Connecting Sections
6.1 Confirm that all sections are in the order shown on the installation diagram, are
aligned with flow arrows pointing towards the outlet, and are on the desired
line and grade.
6.2 Connect channels and end caps through the top and bottom holes of flanges using 1" self-
tapping hex bolts (Fig. C).
6.3 Using frame connectors F-L, join the frames from the top using 3/8" hex bolt
(Fig. D).
6.4 Dead Level systems come with 1" channel convenience spacers to provide
flexibility for fine tuning to the job site conditions. These are intended to be
used as needed between any connection at the discretion of the installing
contractor. For every 20' of trench drain, 1 spacer and corresponding #10
are included.
6.5 It is usually unnecessary to seal channel joints in on-grade installations. If
corrosive solutions are present, or sealed joints are otherwise desired, use a
small bead of silicone caulk to seal joints.

5.3 Drive a minimum of 4 pieces 1/2" #4 rebar through the frame ears to support
each frame section. The rebar should reach a depth sufficient to provide
stability for the system, and prevent floating during the concrete pour. Threaded
steel rod may be substituted for rebar at the installers discretion.
5.4 Level the system at the desired grade by sliding the frame ears along the rebar.
Secure the frame to the rebar using 3/8" hex bolts (Fig. B).

6B. Spacers
6B.1 Dead Level systems are shipped with a CA-F 3/4" spacer. These spacers are provided for
filling in on long runs when heat can cause shrinkage in the channel connections. They
will fit both male and female ends.
6B.2 The CA-F is equipped with indentations for cutting to fit the top of the channel.
6B.3 One is provided for optional use every 20 feet, on 6" and on 12" ductile iron frames.

6C. Channel Retention Clips
6C.1 Dead Level Channel Retention Clips are provided for attaching the channels to the rebar.
6C.2 The channel retention clips provide stability in keeping the channel held tightly in place
while waiting for concrete to be poured.

7. Corners/Tees
7.1 If the system layout requires Corner/Tee Sections, follow the general installation guidelines.
7.2 Invert the Corner/Tee section on a flat surface, and use a reciprocating saw
to remove the appropriate cutout(s) on the section. (Be sure to note whether
the connecting channel(s) have a tongue or groove connection prior to
cutting the Corner/Tee, and remove a cutout with an opposite connection
type than the connecting channel).
7.3 With the cutout correctly removed, the tongue should slide inside the mating
groove, and the flanges should sit flush against each other (Fig. J).

8. Grate Installation
8.1 Grates should always be installed prior to the concrete pour. If used, install
Frame Guards prior to setting the grates (Fig. E).
7.4 Secure the channels and frames with the appropriate hardware (see 6.
Connection Sections)
Note: Dead Level corners or tees can also be formed with a Catch Basin (See
"Catch Basins & Piping Connections"), or underground piping. To pipe under-
ground terminate the trench drains a short distance from the corner joint. Attach
the appropriate endcaps, then connect the endcaps with 4" Sch 40 90's, tees,
and piping as required (Fig. J).

8.2 Install grates along the length of the trench, and secure with hex head or countersunk lock
bolts provided (Fig. F).
8.3 Position Construction Covers over the grates, with the flange between the grate
and frame (Fig. G).

9. Concrete Pour
9.1 Check the entire trench system for proper anchoring, alignment, and leveling,
and connections prior to pouring concrete. (Although the Dead Level frame-
anchored design dramatically reduces the risk of floating, a poorly anchored
system can shift during the pour).
9.2 Check the excavation to be sure a minimum of 4" of concrete can be poured
under, and on all sides of the channels.
9.3 Begin the concrete pour, vibrating the concrete adequately as it is placed, to
ensure complete filling of all potential voids around the trench.
9.4 The edge of the trench frame should be approx. 1/16" BELOW the top of the
concrete after finish troweling in order to keep the frame at or below grade
after the concrete is fully cured.
10. Final Inspection
10.1 After the concrete is dry, remove the construction covers, and retighten the
grate lockdowns. (If construction covers will not pry out easily, cut the cover,
and loosen the grate lockdown to free the sides of the cover).
10.2 Replace the covers to protect the installation during the rest of construction if
appropriate.
11. Alternative Installations: Retro-Fit or Suspended
11.1 Cut the existing slab or form a cavity which will enable a 4" concrete pour
below and around the Dead Level system.
11.2 Cut 2x4's at least 30" in length to span the cavity, and align 2x4's with the
cross bars in the trench frame. Drill 1/2" holes to secure the 2x4's to the
frame cross bars, using 3/8"-16x4-1/2" (minimum) bolts and washers
(Fig. J).
11.3 Insert a thin shim between 2x4's and the frame to ensure the trench
will sit slightly below finished grade after the pour.
11.4 Securely anchor the 2x4's to grade to prevent floating.
11.5 Once the concrete is initially set, remove 2x4's and complete unfinished
areas with concrete.
11.6 Install the grates & lockdowns.

Nota general: NO separe los canales de los marcos.
Las secciones de canales y marcos llegan a la obra preensambladas en una
secuencia específica para cumplir con los requisitos de diseño de su proyecto. No
son intercambiables entre secciones, y separar y volver a armarlos puede resultar
en errores en la instalación. Si se separan por accidente, comuníquese con su

1. Diagrama de instalación
1.1 Ubique el diagrama de instalación en la caja de herrajes y consérvelo.
Si no puede encontrar el diagrama de instalación, comuníquese con su

2. Excavación
2.1 Excave para permitir vaciado de concreto de un mínimo de 4pulg. (10cm)
debajo del drenaje de zanja y a cada lado de este, y debajo de una cuenca
de recolección, si se utiliza.

3.5 Voltee la cuenca de recolección al derecho y colóquela en el alineamiento y pendiente
adecuados de acuerdo con los planos de construcción.
3.6 Si no se utiliza una cuenca de recolección, las conexiones de tubo se realizan en el fondo
del canal o a una tapa de extremo. Perfore a través de la masa de tubo moldeada con una
sierra cilíndrica de 4pulg. (10cm) o con una sierra alternativa con precaución para no raspar
la pared interior de la masa. Realice las conexiones de tubos No Hub (sin masa) con un
acoplamiento adecuado (provisto por algún tercero).
4. Replanteo
4.1 Consulte el diagrama de instalación.
4.2 Trabajando desde las conexiones de salida más profundas hacia corriente arriba, coloque las
secciones de drenaje de zanjas junto a la zanja abierta de acuerdo con las etiquetas en cada
sección y en el diagrama de instalación.
4.3 Cada sección de canal y marco también está marcada con flechas para indicar la dirección
del caudal. Confirme que todas señalen de acuerdo con el caudal que se muestra en el
diagrama de instalación.
5. Anclaje con varillas de acero y nivelado de secciones
5.1 Utilice su método preferido (p. ej., línea con cordón, nivel de láser, etc.) para establecer la
referencia y el control precisos de alineamiento y pendiente.
5.2 Comenzando desde la salida o la cuenca de recolección, coloque la primera sección de
marco estructural y canal que se muestra en el diagrama de instalación en la línea de control
que se desea a lo largo de la zanja excavada.

3. Cuencas de recolección y conexiones de tubería
3.1 Las cuencas de recolección, si se utilizan, deben instalarse primero. Si no se usa una
cuenca de recolección, pase al paso 3.6.
3.2 Con una sierra alternativa o una sierra cilíndrica, retire los recortes de la conexión del tubo
circular donde la cuenca se conectará a la tubería de descarga.
3.3 Invierta la cuenca de recolección sobre una superficie plana y coincida la parte posterior de
las secciones que se muestran en el dibujo de instalación con el patrón en la cuenca. Utilice
una sierra alternativa para retirar el recorte en la cuenca.
3.4 Después de retirar correctamente el recorte, la lengüeta del canal debe deslizarse por el
orificio en la cuenca con la brida del canal al ras contra la pared exterior de la cuenca (fig. A).

5.5 Repita los pasos 5.2 a 5.4 con las demás secciones que se muestran en el diagrama de
instalación hasta finalizar la corrida.
6. Conexión de secciones
6.1 Confirme que todas las secciones se encuentren en el orden que se muestra en el
diagrama de instalación, estén alineadas con las flechas de caudal señalando hacia la
salida y que tengan el alineamiento y pendiente que se desea.
6.2 Conecte los canales y las tapas de extremo a través de los orificios superiores e inferiores
de las bridas con pernos hexagonales autoperforadores de 1pulg. (2.54cm) (fig. C).
6.3 Con los conectores de marco “F” a “L”, una los marcos desde la parte superior con pernos
hexagonales de 3/8pulg. (0.95cm) (fig. D).
6.4 Los sistemas Dead Level se proveen con cómodos espaciadores de canal de 1pulg.
(2.54cm) para proporcionar flexibilidad para ajustarse específicamente a las condiciones
de la obra. Estos se diseñaron para utilizarse según sea necesario entre cualquier conexión
a discreción del contratista que realiza la instalación. Se incluyen un (1) espaciador y un n.º
10 correspondiente para cada 20pies (6.1m) de drenaje de zanjas.
6.5 Típicamente no es necesario sellar las juntas de los canales en instalaciones sobre la
pendiente. Si hay líquidos corrosivos presentes, o se desean juntas selladas por algún otro
motivo, use un pequeño cordón de silicona para sellar las juntas.

5.3 Hinque un mínimo de 4piezas de varilla de acero n.º4 de 1/2pulg. (1.25cm) a través
de las orejetas del marco para soportar cada sección de marco. La varilla de acero debe
alcanzar una profundidad suficiente para proporcionar estabilidad para el sistema y evitar
que flote durante el vaciado de concreto. La varilla de acero puede sustituirse con varilla
de acero con rosca a discreción del instalador.
5.4 Deslice las orejetas del marco por la varilla de acero para nivelar el sistema al pendiente
que se desea. Fije el marco a la varilla de acero con pernos hexagonales de 3/8pulg.
(0.95cm) (fig. B).

El CA-M permitirá que las dos secciones macho se ajusten entre sí firmemente.

6B. Espaciadores
6B.1 Los sistemas Dead Level se embarcan con un espaciador CA-F de 3/4pulg. (1.89cm).
Estos espaciadores se suministran para rellenar corridas largas cuando el calor puede
provocar encogimiento en las conexiones de canales. Se ajustan a los extremos tanto
macho como hembra.
6B.2 El CA-F cuenta con muescas para realizar cortes para ajustarse a la parte superior del
canal.
6B.3 Uno se suministra para uso opcional cada 20pies (6.1m), en marcos de hierro dúctil de
6pulg. (15cm) y de 12pulg. (30cm).

6C. Sujetadores de retención de canales
6C.1 Los sujetadores de retención de canales Dead Level se suministran para fijar los canales

7. Esquinas y tes
7.1 Si el replanteo del sistema necesita secciones en esquina o en t, siga los lineamientos
generales para la instalación.
7.2 Invierta la sección en esquina o en t sobre una superficie plana, y utilice una sierra
alternativa para retirar los recortes adecuados en la sección. (Asegúrese de tener en
cuenta si los canales que se conectan tienen una conexión de lengüeta o de muesca
antes de cortar la esquina o t y retire un recorte con un tipo de conexión opuesto al canal
de conexión).
7.3 Después de retirar el recorte correctamente, la lengüeta debe deslizarse a la muesca
correspondiente y las bridas deben quedar al ras, una junta a la otra (fig. J).

8. Instalación de rejilla
8.1 Las rejillas siempre se deben instalar antes de vaciar el concreto. Instale las
guardas de marco, si se utilizan, antes de colocar las rejillas (fig. E).
7.4 Fije los canales y marcos con el herraje adecuado (consulte 6. Secciones
de conexiones)
Nota: Esquinas o tes Dead Level también se pueden formar con una cuenca
recolectora (consulte Conexiones de cuencas recolectoras y conexiones
de tubería) o con tubería subterránea. Para conectar los tubos bajo tierra,
termine los drenajes para zanjas a una corta distancia de la junta de la
esquina. Fije las tapas de extremo adecuadas, luego conecte las tapas de
extremo con piezas de 90grados Sch 40 de 4pulg. (10cm), tes y tubería
según sea necesario (fig. J).
