INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on purchasing the Wavestore Topaz, a cutting-edge Digital Video Recorder and
Management System. This Quickstart uide aims to get you up and running quickly whilst also
giving you a brief tour of the major sections of the software.
Although Wavestore is easy to use, a product with so many features can be quite daunting at first.
Please take the time to read through this guide and you’ll find yourself quite comfortable with
Wavestore in no time at all.
This guide will only describe how to configure and use a basic system. For complete configuration
instructions, you should read the full manual which can be found on the installation DVD/CDs. This
guide assumes that you are operating the system directly, however it is also possible to use the
Windows client software which allows remote operation from a Windows PC. The client software is
also on the installation DVD/CDs.

CONNECTIONS
Firstly, you will need to connect a monitor and a mouse. Most monitors will have 2 cables coming
out of the back. One is the power lead, which you should plug in to a mains power socket later, and
the other is the connection to the computer. You should plug this connector into the socket labelled
VGA Mon tor as shown in the picture above. Now plug the mouse into the socket labelled PS/2
Mouse.
Optional: Plug a keyboard into the socket labelled PS/2 Keyboard. Your keyboard should have a
small round PS/2 connector. A keyboard is not necessary to use Wavestore although you may
prefer to do so as some maintenance tasks require a keyboard. Hopefully you will not need to
perform any such maintenance tasks but it is good to have a keyboard nearby in case anything
goes wrong. During the course of this Quickstart uide we will show you how to use the virtual
keyboard, although you can use a real keyboard if you prefer.
The final step is to connect the enclosed power supply to the socket labelled Power Input in the
diagram and connect the other end to your mains power source. Now is also a good time to plug
the monitor power cable in to your mains power source.
Congratulations! You’re ready to go.
Press the Power Switch on the front of the Wavestore
Topaz, wait while the system loads, and you should
see a screen similar to that shown to the left.

USING THE POP-UP VIRTUAL KE BOARD
In the instances where a hardware keyboard is not available and data entry is required, you can
double-click with the left mouse button while the cursor is over the data entry box. This will cause a
virtual keyboard to appear, allowing you to enter alphanumeric characters.
This works just like a normal keyboard except you use the mouse to control it. The Lock button
corresponds to CAPS LOCK on a normal keyboard. Also, there are four navigational buttons,
Home, <-, ->, and End. Home takes the cursor to the beginning of the line, End takes the cursor to
the end of the line. <- and -> move the cursor one step to the left or one step to the right
respectively. Simply press Enter to finish and close the virtual keyboard.
LOGGING IN
When you first start the Wavestore Topaz, you will be presented with the choice of two buttons,
Quit in the top-right corner, and Login in the bottom-right corner. Click Log n with the left mouse
button to open the login dialogue box.
Wavestore comes with the following login details as
standard:
USERNAME = install
PASSWORD = a
Wavestore Topaz Quickstart uide - version 4.2 - issue 1 4
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.

The login dialog box has 3 text boxes. The top one is labelled server. In here, you should type
localhost although your Wavestore Topaz should have this in the box already. Now enter the
username and password as specified above. Finally click Ok to login at which point you should see
the screen shown below:
CONFIGURING IP CAMERAS
Before you can begin configuring your network cameras, you will need to know the IP address of
each camera and ensure that the IP address is on the same subnet as the address of the
Wavestore. The procedure of setting the IP address of the camera is dependant on the make and
model of camera so the camera documentation should describe
this. Once you know the IP addresses of the cameras and have
ensured that they are on the same subnet as the Wavestore, it
is time to set them up for viewing and recording.
In the Wavestore client, click Setup, then Cameras. This will
open the Camera Setup screen. In the middle of the screen at
the bottom you should see the IP Camera panel as shown to
the right.
To begin configuring the first camera, simply enter the IP
address of the camera in the box provided. To test that the
Wavestore can contact the camera, click the P ng button which
will open a special window for testing connectivity. Click P ng in
the new window and observe the results. If you see a series of
lines saying “Reply from < p address>” then the Wavestore
Topaz and camera can contact each other successfully. Otherwise there is some kind of
communication problem. See the Troubleshoot ng section of this document for hints on how to
diagnose the cause of this problem.
Wavestore Topaz Quickstart uide - version 4.2 - issue 1 5

Once it has been proven that the Wavestore Topaz can ping the camera, it is time to select the
desired model. Normally this means selecting HTTP from the Type drop-down box and the camera
make from the Camera drop-down box. The only exceptions to this are that for Mobot x cameras
you can choose MxPEG from the Type menu and for Arecont cameras you can choose the
Arecont type.
If your camera of choice is not listed, it may still be possible to use the camera. In this case you
should choose Type = HTTP, and Camera = Custom. Then try to look up the camera details on
our Knowledgebase page which can be found at this address:
http://kb.wavestore.com/kb/?View=entry&EntryID=30
The next step is to enable the camera for viewing by ticking the
enabled box near the camera number as shown on the left. This
enables the camera for viewing but not for recording.
To enable recording, tick the enabled box at the top-right of the
screen under Pr me as shown in the diagram below.
Now we need to allocate some storage to the camera. There are
two methods for doing this:
1. Auto delete by s ze - You can specify an exact
amount of storage you wish to allocate to the camera.
2. Auto delete by t me – You can specify a desired
maximum recording time and allow Wavestore to
automatically assign storage.
Auto-delete by t me is recommended as it automatically
adjust the storage allocation, providing the same length of
recordings for all cameras on any one storage disk.
To set up auto delete by t me, ensure that auto delete by
s ze is not ticked and that auto delete by t me s. Then
choose the des red d sk from the d sk drop-down box. Then
just choose the desired maximum number of days recording.
The next thing to consider is the recording rate. This specifies the maximum number of pictures per
second that will be recorded for the current camera. If the camera actually sends fewer than this
quantity, the Wavestore Topaz will simply record whatever is received. For example, you can
specify a recording rate of 25 pictures per second, but the camera might only be sending 15
pictures per second, in which case the Wavestore will just record those 15 pictures per second. If
the camera outputs 30 pictures per second, then the Wavestore will only record 25 per second if
that is the value specified as the recording rate.
If you wish to add another camera, simply click Add in the IP Camera panel and repeat this
process.
The camera is now configured so close the screen by clicking the X in the top-right corner of the
screen and say Yes to save the changes. Close the Setup screen by clicking X again. Finally,
logout and login again. You should now be back at the main screen and able to view the camera.

THE MAIN SCREEN
The main screen has a large viewing window, which can be controlled by the following actions...
•FULL SCREEN mode is toggled ON and OFF by clicking with the right mouse button in
the desired video image.
•DIGITAL ZOOM is performed using the mouse wheel. However you should ensure that
the camera you wish to zoom is selected.
•DIGITAL PAN/TILT is performed by clicking the left mouse button and dragging the
mouse once zoomed in.
Play Controls
The play controls operate as follows:
Wavestore Topaz Quickstart uide - version 4.2 - issue 1 7

To rewind or fast forward, click and hold the left mouse button on the appropriate button. The
longer the mouse button is held, the faster the archive searches. When the mouse button is
released, searching will continue at the current speed until another play control is clicked.
There are also 2 controls to take you to the beginning or end of the archive, that is, the oldest or
newest recordings for the currently selected camera.
On the front screen, the Stop button causes live images to be played. In the F nd screen, the Stop
button is disabled as only recorded images can be played back from the F nd screen.
Resolut on (H gh, Med um, Low and Grey)
These controls are only for analogue cameras and so do not function
when using IP cameras.
Camera Select on
Camera selection is performed by clicking the buttons labeled
1 to 16. For cameras above 16, use the Sel button (short for
Select). For example, for camera 127 click Sel then 1 then 2
then 7. Note that the Sel button changes to say Ent. Press the
Ent button (short for Enter).
Cameras can also be selected using
the drop-down menu on the right of the
screen. From here you can instantaneously choose any camera in the
entire networked system.
Mult -screen D splays
These buttons determine which type of multi-camera display is to be shown. This can
be 1, 4, 9, 13 or 16. The arrangement of cameras within each display is determined by
the settings in Setup | D splay. Each operator can have their own settings for multi-
screen displays and multiples of each type can be configured and named, i.e. each
operator can configure as many 16-way displays as desired. Any settings made within
the Setup | D splay screen are saved for the currently logged in operator only.
Act v ty
The activity button is for analogue cameras only and so does not function in the
Wavestore Topaz.

TIP: Cameras can be quickly selected by hovering the mouse over the drop-
down camera list and moving the mouse-wheel up or down.

Status Ind cator
The status indicator shows the current status of the Wavestore Topaz, as well as
the current license level. If a problem has occurred such as the disks are full or the
machine is unlicensed, the status indicator will change into an icon representing
that fault. The possible icons are:
Disk Full This is unlikely to occur. Will only happen if disk wrap is not on.
Fault There has been a fault. You should check the System Log for details.
Logout You need to logout before your changes are effected.
System OK Indicates that the system is functioning normally.
Unlicensed The Wavestore has not yet been licensed or there has been a licensing
error. You should go to the Licence screen under Setup and re-enter
the licence key.
Ed t
The Edit screen takes a snapshot of the currently viewed image and displays it in a large viewing
area. There are various controls on this screen to allow you to modify the image ready for printing
or saving to disk.
You can use the + and – symbols next to the Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and amma controls
to adjust various properties of the displayed image.
There are also Mosaic, Sharpen, Blur, Invert, Equalize, and Zoom controls which perform various
effects upon the image. The Undo button will undo the last action and the Restore button reverts

to the original image. Each of the effects can be applied to a specific area by drawing a masking
rectangle on the image by clicking and dragging on the image before applying the desired effect.
Click Pr nt to output to the currently installed printer.
It is also possible to save the images in JPE , BMP or PN
format. Click Save to display the Save dialog box. When saving in
JPE format, you can choose the Compression/Quality setting.
Higher quality settings lead to larger file sizes. Lower quality
settings mean smaller file sizes but some detail in the image is
lost.
When saving as BMP or PN format, there is no option for
Compression/Quality settings. The PN format aims for
maximum compression without any quality loss, whereas BMP is
non-compressed.
To complete the save, enter a filename or click Browse… to select the desired location for the
saved image.
Pr nt
Prints the current onscreen image. It is possible to print directly from live
or paused images even when a multi-camera display is visible in which
case the full multi-camera display is printed. There is a drop down menu
which offers many choices.
It is possible to scale the size of the image to fit onto the chosen paper
size.
NOTE: High quality printing is very slow on printers connected to the
parallel port. A USB printer will provide much faster performance.
Copy
This function allows the copying of an image (static) or image clip (moving images) from
Wavestore to another storage medium. For detailed information on copying images and image
clips, see the MAKING BACKUPS section later in this document.
Seq (Sequences)
This button will activate a preset camera sequence on the V A monitor. Note that the indicator
light is lit while Sequence mode is enabled. Preset Sequences can be set up in the Setup |
Sequences screen. Simpy drag the cameras into the desired order and specify the dwell time for
each. The dwell time is the time for which that camera will be shown before displaying the next in
the sequence.
PTZ (Pan / T lt / Zoom)
PTZ on IP / network cameras is not currently supported but is expected in Q4 2008.

FIND
This rapid and powerful facility takes the operator to specific points in the recorded video, either by
the bar chart, or by selecting a specific date and time.
Once the Find button has been clicked, the following screen will come up:
Each red bar is a time-line corresponding to a particular input, either video or audio. Areas of red
contain recordings at the corresponding times and areas of grey signify no recording. If there are
more than 17 bars then you can use the horizontal scroll bar above the play controls to bring the
others into view.
Click on one of the red bars to show the images from that input. If the input is an audio channel, a
graphical waveform of the audio signal is shown instead. Clicking and dragging up or down moves
the time-line accordingly. The horizontal black line crosses the time-line on the left and the image
from that time is displayed.
Pressing the play button causes the red bars to move upwards, playing the recorded images at
normal speed. During playback, the date and time of the displayed image will be shown in the time
box on the right.
The play controls function exactly as on the main screen except that the Stop button is greyed out
as live viewing is not possible on the F nd screen.
As well as clicking on the red bars, inputs can also be selected using the buttons numbered 1-16
the bottom-right of the screen. These buttons function in the same way as on the front screen.
In the Wavestore, recordings can take place in 3 different sections: - Pr me, TLapse and Alarm.
The indicator light represents the section being viewed. It is possible to record to any combination
of sections simultaneously on each camera input.
The time-line span may be changed by clicking the + or - buttons, or by using the drop-down
menu. Using either method, the operator can vary the span from 2 minutes to 60 days (2,3,8,15,30
minutes 1,2,4,8,16, hours, 1,2,4,7,15,30,60 days).
Image clips can be copied to CD-R, DVD-R, or a remote client from the Find screen using the
Copy and Mult ple Copy buttons. Multiple Copy is detailed in the full Wavestore manual, Copy
(single camera) is explained in the MAKING BACKUPS section below.
Wavestore Topaz Quickstart uide - version 4.2 - issue 1 11

MAKING BACKUPS
To backup images from the F nd screen, it is first
necessary to enter the beginning and end times in the
select on from and to boxes.
This can be performed manually by double-clicking in
each box and choosing the date and time using the
popup box which appears.
Alternatively, find the appropriate start time by clicking and dragging on the red bars, then click the
--> button which is next to select on from. Repeat this operation for to which will set the end time.
The range to be backed up has now been created.
To proceed with the backup of the currently selected camera, click Copy. This opens the backup
screen.
Firstly the operator is asked to enter
a Backup Name. This name will be
used as the name of the directory in
which the backup will be written.
The backup screen shows the
relevant information about the image
or images selected, the size in
kilobytes and the total size selected.
To initiate the backup, choose the
desired media, usually CD or DVD,
then simply click Prepare.
Note that Wavestore supports DVD-
R / DVD-RW only. Not DVD+R /
DVD+RW.
Once the preparation stage is
complete, click Burn to start burning
the disc. When the burn is complete, it is possible to insert another CD/DVD and do another Burn –
i.e. the Prepare stage does not have to be repeated.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Q – When I attempt to Ping my IP camera I get no reply. Why might this be?
A – There are many possible reasons for this and it is difficult to list them all here, but you should
check the following:
Ensure that the IP addresses of the Wavestore and IP camera are both correctly configured and
on the same subnet.
Ensure that the network cables of the Wavestore and IP camera are both properly connected to
the switch and that the indicator lights on the switch indicate connectivity.
Ensure that the IP address of the camera is correctly entered on the Camera Setup screen.
Ensure that there is no firewall or other network device that might be blocking the traffic between
the Wavestore and the IP camera.
Q – I can ping my IP camera but I'm still getting no pictures. What could the problem be?
A – This usually means there is a problem with the camera setup. Currently, Wavestore does not
support authenticated login to IP cameras. This means that you need to allow anonymous or guest
access to the camera. Doing so is specific to the camera make so you should check how to do this
with the camera manufacturer. Also, you should check that the camera is in M-JPE mode.
If you still cannot get pictures, check the Wavestore system log by going to Setup | System Log.
You should see some yellow warning messages which may contain details of the error message
being received when attempting to connect to the camera. These are standard HTTP error codes.
For example, if you see error code 401, that corresponds to “Unauthorized” and means that the
camera is denying access to the Wavestore. Lists of HTTP error codes are available on the
internet.
