KNOW YOUR UNIT
• Read your instruction manual carefully until

PLAN AHEAD
DWARNINL_: Inspectarea beforestart-
ing unit. Remove all debris and herd objects
such as rocks, glass, wire, etc. that can dco-
chet, be thrown, or otherwise cause injury or
damage during operation.
• Always wear eye protectionwhen operating,
servicing,or performingmaintenanceon unit.
Wearing eye protectionwill help to prever4
brushor debrisfrom beingthrownorricochet-
ing into eyes and face which can result in
blindnessand/or serious injury. Eye protec_
lion should he marked Z87.
• Wear hearing protectionwhen using this
unit.
• Secure hairabove shoulder length. Secure
or remove jewelry, loose clothing, or cloth-
ing with loosely hanging straps, ties, tas-
sels, etc. They can be caught in moving
parts.
• Stay alert. Do notoperateunit when you are
tired,il!,upset,or ifyou areunderthe influence
of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Keep children, bystanders, and animals
away from work area a minimum of 30feet
( fO meters) when starting or operating unit.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
• Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame (th_
cludthg smoking, open flames, or work that
can causesparks inthe areaswhere fuelis
mxed, poured, or stored.
• Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area; store
fuel in a cool, dry, well ventilated place; use
an approved, marked container for all fuel
purposes.
• Do not smoke while handling fuel or while
operating the unit.
Do notfill fuel tank while engine is running.
: Make sure the unit is properlyassembled
and in good operating condition.
• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up fuel spills
before starting the engine.
• Move atleast 10feet (3 meters) away from
fuel and fueling site before starting engine.
• Always store gasoline in a container ap-
proved for flammable liquids.
OPERATE YOUR UNIT SAFELY
_DANGER: RISK OF CUT; KEEP
HANDS AWAY FROM BLADE-Blade
moves momentarily after the trigger is re-
leased. Do not attempt to clear away cut ma-
terial when the blade is in motion. Make sure
the switch is in the OFF position,the spark
plugwire isdisconnected, and the blade has
stopped moving before removing jammed
material from the cutting blade. Do notgrab or
hold the unit by the cuffing blade.
• Inspect unit before each use for worn,
loose, missing, or damaged parts. Do not
use until unit is in proper workthg order.
• Keep outside surfaces free from oil and
fuel.
• Never start or run engine inside a closed
room or building. Breathing exhaust fumes
can kill.
• Avoid dangerous environments. Do notuse
in unventilated areas or where explosive
vapors or carbon monoxide build up could
be present.
• Do notoverreach or use from unstable sur-
faces such as ladders, trees, steep slopes,
rooftops, etc. Keep firm footing and balance
at all times.
• Do notraise unit above your shoulders; the
cutting blade can come dangerously close
to your body.
• Always keep unit infront ofyour body.Keep
all partsof your body away from the cutting
blade.
• Keep the cutting blade and air vents free
from debris.
• Use only for jobs explained in this manual.
MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY
• Have all maintenance other than the rec_
ommended procedures described inthe in-
struction manual performed by an autho-
rized service dealer.
• Disconnect spark plug before performing
maintenance except for carburetor adjust-
ments.
• Do not use a cutting blade that is bent,
warped, cracked, broken, or damaged in
any other way. Have worn or damaged
parts replaced by an authorized service
dealer.
• Use only recommended Weed Eater@cut-
ting blades and replacement parts; use of
any other parts may void your warranty and
cause damage to your unit.
• Empty fuel tank beforestoring the unit. Use
upfuel leftin carburetorby startingengineand
letting it run untilit stops.
• Hand carry the unitwith the en_g_lthestopped
and the muffler and cutting blade away from
your body.
• Allow engine to cool, empty the fuel tank,
and secure the unit before storing or trans-
porting it in avehicle.

The ON/OFF SWITCH isused to stop the en_
gine. Tostop engine, move switch to OFE
CHOKE
The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine
to aid in cold starting. Activate the choke by
movingchoke lever tothedesired position.See
STARTINGYOUR ENGINE for complete start-
ing information.
PRIMER BULB
The PRIMER BULB removes airfrom thecar*
buretor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel.
This allows you tostart the engine with fewer
pulls on the starter rope. Activate the primer
bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to
its original position.
THROTTLE TRIGGER
The THROTi-LE TRIGGER controls engine
speed.Squeezethetriggerf@full speedopera-
tion; release it for idle speed.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE
41_WARNIN_: Be sure to read the fuel
information in the safety rules before you be-
gin. Ifyou do not understand the safety rules,
do not attempt to fuel your unit. Call
1*800-554*6723.
FUELING ENGINE
DWARNIN_: Remove fuel cap slowly
when refueling.
This engine is certified to operate on un-
leaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline
must be mixed with a good quality synthetic
2*cycte air-coeted engine oil designed to be
mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/Weed Eater
brand synthetic oil is recommended. A 40:1
ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2ounces (95ml)
ofoii with 1gallon (4 liters) of unleadedgaso,
line. DO NOT USE automotive oil or boatoil.
These oils will cause engine damage. When
mixing fuel, follow instructionsprinted on oi_
container. Once oil is added to gasoline,
shake container momentarily to assure that
the fuel isthoroughly mixed. Atways read and
follow the safety rules listed under HANDLE
FUEL WITH CAUTION.
IMPORTANT
Expedence indicatesthat alcohol blendedfueJs
(called gasoho_or using ethanol or methanol)
can attract moisturewhich leads to separation
and formation of acids during storage. Acidic
gas can damage the fuel system of anengine
while in storage. To avoid engine problems,
empty the fuel system before storage for 30
days or longer.Dratathe g_as tank, etar_theen-
gineandlet it run untilthe fuetlinesand carbure-
tor areempty. Usefresh fuel next season. Nev-
er use engine orcarburetor cleanerproductsin
thefuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT POINTS
• Use the minimum throttle speed necessary
to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge
trimmer performance.
• Never attempt to use this hedge trimmer to
cut hedges that have any branches with a
diameter larger than 7/16" (1 cm).

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE
• To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF
switch to the OFF position.
STARTING YOUR ENGINE
•Fuel engine. Move at least 10feet (3 me_
ters) away from the fueling site.
• Hold the unit on the ground in the starting
position as shown. Support unit so the
blade is off of the ground and away from
trees, bushes, onlookers, etc.

1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON posi*

2. Engage the throttle lock as follows:
• press the throttle lock-out;
• squeeze and hold throttle trigger;
• press and hold throttle lock, then
• release the throttle trigger
NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged until
the engine starts.

3. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
4. Move the chokelever tothe FULLCHOKE
position.

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply until en*
gine sounds as if it istrying to run, but do
not pull rope more than 6 times.
6. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE position.
7. Pull starter rope sharply until the engine
runs, but no more than 6 pulis.
NOTE: If the engine doesn't start after 6
pulis (at the HALF CHOKE position),
check tomake sure the ON/OFF switch is
in theON position. Move the choke lever
to the FULL CHOKE position and press
the primer bulb 6 times; pull the starter
rope 2 more times. Move the choke lever
to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the
starter rope until the engine runs, but no
more than 6 more pulls. If the engine still
doesn't start, it is probably flooded. Pro,
ceed to STARTING A FLOODED EN*
GINE.
8. Once the engine starts, allow the engine to
run 10seconds, thenmove the choke lever
totheOFF CHOKE position.Altawthe unitto
runfor30moreseconds attheOFFCHOKE
position beforesqueezingand releasing the
throttletrigger to releasethe throttle lock.
NOTE: if engine dies with the choke lever
in the OFF CHOKE position, move the
choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position
and pull the rope until the engine runs, but
no more than 6 pulls.
STARTING A WARM ENGINE
1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON posi*
tion.
2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
3. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE posittan.
4. Engage the throttle lock as dffected in
STARTING A COLD ENGINE.
NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged unti_
the engine starts.
5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,
but no more than 5 pulis.
6. Allow the engine to run 10 seconds, then
move the choke lever tothe OFF CHOKE
position.
7. Release thethrottle lock by squeezing and
releasing the trigger.
NOTE: If engine has notstarted, pull starter
rope 5more pulls. Ifengine still does not run,it
is probably flooded. Proceed to STARTING A
FLOODED ENGINE.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded en_ginescan be started by placing
the ON/OFFswitch in the ONposition andthe
choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position and
engaging the throttle lock as directed in the
STARTING A COLD ENGINE section; then,
pull the rope to clear the engine of excess
fuel. Starting could require pulling the starter
rope many Umes dependin_gon how badlythe
unit is flooded,ff the unit stitldoesn't start, refer
to the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call
1-800-554-6723.
DWARNINL_: Ensure ON/OFF switch

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Thewarrantyon this unit does notcover items
that have been sub ected to operator abuse
or neg gence. To receve fu va ue from the
warranty, the operator must maintain unit as
instructed in this manual. Various adjust-
ments will need to be made periodically to
properly maintain your unit.

restart engine and continue.

signs of damage or leaks.
INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND

• Before and after each use, inspect corn+
plefe unit for loose or damaged parts. After
each use, clean the unit and labels using a
damp cloth with a mild detergent.
• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

Cleaning the air filter:
A dirty air filter decreases engine perform_
ance and increases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after every
5 hours of operation.
1. Clean the cover and the area around it to
keep debris from fairing into thecarburetor
chamber when the cover is removed.
2. Remove parts as iltustrated.
NOTE: Do notclean filter in gasctine or other
flammable sdvent. Doing so can create a fire
hazard or produce harmful evaperative emis+
sions.
3. Wash thefilter in soap andwater.
4. Altow filter to dry.
5. Add a fewdrops of oil tothe filter; squeeze
fitter to distribute oil.
6. Replace parts.
INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK
ARRESTING SCREEN
NOTE: THE SPARKARRESTING SCREEN
ON THIS UNiT iS NOT SERVICEABLE.
For normal homeowner use, the muffler and
spark arresting screen wilt not requireany ser+
vice.
After 50 hours of use, we recommend that
your muffler be replaced by an authorized
service dealer.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
_J, WARNING: Keep others away when
making idle speed adustments. The blade
will bemoving during most of this procedure.
Wear your protective equipment andobserve
all safety precautions. When making adjust-
ments, use a screwdriver short enough to
keep your hands behind the handguard and
away from the blade. After making adjust-
ments, the blade must notmove atidle speed.
The carburetor has been carefully set atthe
factory. Adjustments may be necessary if you
notice any of the following conditions:
Engine will not idle when the throttle is re+
leased.
• The blade moves at idle.
Keep others away when making idle speed
adjustments. Make adjustments with the unit
resting on a level surface free of debris that
can be caught in the hedge trimmer blade.
Serious in ury to the operator and others can
occur f the carburetor s not propery ad+
justed. Keep all parts of your bcdy away from
the blade and muffler.
Idle Speed Adjustment

gine stalling (idle speed too slow).
• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-
crease engine speed if engine stalls or dies.
• Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to
decrease engine speed if the blade moves
at idle.

after each ad ustment. The blade must not
move at d e speed to avo d serous n uryto
the operator or others.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG
Replace spark plug eachy ear to ensure the
engine starts easier andruns better. Set
spark plug gap at0.025 inch. Ignition timing is
fixed, nonad ustable.
1. Tw st, then pu off spark pug boot.
2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and dis-
card.
3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark
plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inch
socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.
REPLACE FUEL FILTER
Toreplace fuel filter, drain unit by running itdry
of fuel, then remove fuel cap/retainer assem-
bly from tank. Pull filter from tank and remove
it fromthe fuel line. Install new fuel filter onfuel
line; reinstall parts.
41_WARNIN_: Perform the following
steps after each use:
• Allow engine to cool, and secure the unit
before storing or transporting.
• Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area
where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or
open flames from water heaters, electric
motors or switches, furnaces, etc.
• Store unit with all guards in place. Position
unit so that any sharp object cannot acci-
dentally cause injury.
•Store unit and fuel well out of the reach of
children.
SEASONAL STORAGE
Prepare unit for storage atend ofseason or if
it will not be used for 30 days or more.
Ifyour unit is to be stored for a period of time:
• Clean the entire unit.
• Store in a clean dry area.
• Clean all parts and check for damage.
Have damaged parts repaired or replaced
by an authorized service dealer.
Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight.
Lightly oil external metal surfaces, includ-
ing the blade.
To oil the blade, do the following:
• Stop the engine and allow blade to come to
a complete stop.
• Ensure ON/OFF switch is in theOFF posi-
tion.
Disconnect the spark plug wire.
Apply a light machine oil along the edge of
the top strap as shown.

FUEL SYSTEM
Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA*
TION section ofthis manual,see message la-
beled IMPORTANT regarding the use of ga-
sohol in your engine. Fuel stabilizer is an ac_
ceptabie alternative in minimizing the formation
offuel gum deposits dudng stcra_ga.Add stabi*
lizerto gasoline in fueltank orfuel storaga con-
tainer.Follow the mix instructions foundon sta-
bilizer container.Run engine atleast 5minutes
afteradding stabilizer.
ENGINE
• Remove spark plug andpour 1teaspoon of
40:1,2*cycle engine oil (air cooled) through
the spark plug opening. Slowly pull the
starter rope 8 to 10 times to distribute oil.
• Replace spark plugwith newone ofrecom-
mended type and heat range (see RE*
PLACE SPARK PLUG section).
• Clean air filter.
• Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,
and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,
or worn parts.
• At the beginning of the next season, use
only fresh fuel havingtheproper gasoline to
oil ratio.
OTHER
• Do not store gasoline from one season to
another.
• Replace your gasoline can if it atarts torust.

YOUR WARRANTY RIGHTS AND OB-
LIGATIONS: The U. S. Environmental
ProtectionAgency, Environment Canada and
ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC.,
are pleased to explain the emissions control
system warranty on your year 2002-2004
small off-road engine. ELECTROLUX
HOME PRODUCTS, INC., must warrant the
emission control system on your small off-
road engine for the periods of time listed be-
low provided there has been no abuse, ne-
glect, or improper maintenance of your small
off-roed engine. Your emission control sys-
tem includes parts such as the carburetor and
the ignition system. Where a warrantable
condition exists, ELECTROLUX HOME
PRODUCTS, INC., will repair your small off-
road engine at nocost to you. Expenses cov-
ered under warranty include diagnosis, parts
and labor. MANUFACTURER'SWARRAN-
TY COVERAGE: If any emissions related
part on your engine (as listed under Emis-
sions Control Warranty Parts List) is defec-
tive or a defect in the materials or workman-
ship of the engine causes the failure of such
an emission related part, the part will be re-
paired or replaced by ELECTROLUX HOME
PRODUCTS, INC. OWNER'S WARRANTY
RESPONSIBILITIES: As the small off-road
engine owner,you are responsible for theper-
formance of the required maintenance listed
in your instruction manual. ELECTROLUX
HOME PRODUCTS, INC., recommends that
you retain all receipts covering maintenance
on your small off-road engine, but ELEC-
TROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC., cannot
deny warranty solely forthe lack of receipts or
for your failure to ensure the performanceof
all scheduled maintenance. Asthesmalloff-
road engine owner,you should beaware that
ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC.,
may deny you warranty coverage if your
small off-roed engine or apart of it has failed
due to abuse, neglect, improper mainte-
nance, unapproved modifications, or the use
of parts not made or approved by theoriginal
equipment manufacturer You are responsi-
ble for presenting your small off-road engine
to an ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS,
INC., authorized repair center as soon as a
problemexists. Warranty repairs should be
completed in a reasonable amount of time,
not to exceed 30 days. if you have any ques*
tions regarding your warranty rights and re-
sponsibilities, you should contact your near-
est authorized service center or call ELEC-
TROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC., at
1-800-554-6723. WARRANTY COM-
MENCEMENT DATE: The warranty period
begins on the date the small off-road engine
is purchased. LENGTH OF COVERAGE:
This warranty shall be for a period of two
years from theinitial date ofpurchase. WHAT
IS COVERED: REPAIR OR REPLACE-
MENT OF PARTS. Repair or replacement of
any warranted part will be performed at no
char_rg_eto the owner at an approved ELEC-
TROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC., servic-

WARRANTY PERIOD: Any warranted part
which isnotscheduled for replacement as re-
quired maintenance, or which is scheduled
only for regular inspection to the effect of "re-
pair or replace as necessary" shall be war-
ranted for 2 years. Any warranted part which
is scheduled for replacement as required
maintenanceshali bewarranted forthe period
of time up to thefirst scheduled replacement
point for that part. DIAGNOSIS: The owner
shall not be charged for diagnostic labor
which leads to the determination that a war-
ranted part is defective if the diagnostic work
is performed at an approved ELECTROLUX
HOME PRODUCTS, INC., servicing center.
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES: ELEC-
TROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, _NC.,may be
liable for damages to other engine compo-
nents caused by the failure of a warranted
part still under warranty. WHAT IS NOT
COVERED: All failures caused by abuse, ne-
glect, or improper maintenance are not cow
ered.ADD-ON OR MODIFIED PARTS: The
use of add-on or modified parts can be
grounds for disallowing a warranty claim.

placement part used in the performance of
any warranty maintenance or repair on emis-
sion related parts will be provided without
charge to the owner if the part is under war_
