1 Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Chor'X !
Chor'X is a stereo Dual Bucket-Brigade Delay (BDD) emulation-based chorus, featuring a new
and intuiti e way to tweak its parameters quickly.
In the Legacy mode, Chor'X pro ides four finely reproduced, well known choruses from the
CS-80, VP-330, Synthex Synthesizers and from the imension effect.
When opening the Ad anced panel, the internal parameters for the legacy chorus can be
tweaked. You will also ha e access to the Xils-lab True Stereo ynamic Engine which allows
you to put your dry or wet channels at the correct stereo position with unbelie able realism.
Knowing that some audio materials need to keep their transients unprocessed, Chor'X also offers a
special transient follower to modulate the ry/Wet or the Amount le el and then to process only
some parts of your audio.

2 Features
Chor'X offers:
•True stereo path, independent Right and Left chorus
•Four Chorus type emulations, CS-80, VP-330, Synthex, Dimension-D
•up to four Bucket-brigade delay emulations
•True Stereo Dynamic Engine
•Impulse follower
•En elope follower
•All parameters are MIDI controllable
Chor'X is a ailable in the following formats:
Mac OSX 10.9 and later: 64 bits (Intel & M1), VST, Audio Unit,AAX 64 bits nati e
Windows 7, 8,10: 64 and 32 bits, VST, AAX (32 & 64 bits)
Minimum system requirements: 1 Gigabyte of RAM and a 1 GHz processor.
Chor'X is a plug-in and is not a ailable as a standalone application

3 Installation
3.1 Serial number
Chor'X uses a simple proprietary serial number based protection.
When launching Chor'X for the first time, it will ask for this number.
After submitting (by clicking on the “enter” key of your keyboard or the VALIDATE button), you
must close and re-launch it to complete the registration.
This serial number will ne er be asked for again, e en when installing updates.
Tip: It is always a good idea to back up this serial number, or to print it, in case you should
ha e to reinstall Chor'X (i.e., if you encountered an HD crash, or ha e to reinstall your OS).
3.2 Windows (Windows 7,8,10)
To install Chor'X on Windows 7 and later, launch the installer file chorx_win_setup_xxx.exe. Please
download the latest ersion from the XILS-lab website.
Once you ha e accepted the license agreement, you will be asked to select the installation directory
and be pro ided with a default one. Presets and arious files, like this manual, used by the Chor'X
will be stored in this directory. Please note that this location is different from the VST install
directory, which you will need to specify in the next step of the installer.
Once the installation directory is specified, you will be asked to select the VST plug-in directory, with
a suggested default location. Keep this default directory if you do not use the VST ersion.
Important notice: be sure to use a folder owned by the user (do not use “c:/program files” for
instance, or any subfolder of a system folder). By default, the preset folder is
c:/users/documents/public/XILS-lab/ChorX

3.3 Mac (OSX 10.9.0 and la er)
To install Chor'X on a computer equipped with Mac OSX 10.9.0 or later, double-click the file
chorx_osx_setup_xxx.dmg.
Please download the latest ersion from the XILS-lab website.
Then launch the install program, ChorX.pkg, and follow the instructions. Warning: the install
program will ask you for your system password.
If your ersion of OSX doesn't want to run the installer, open the System preferences, select
Security & Pri acy and click on “Launch anyway” at the right of the Chor'X installer name.
The arious files of the Chor'X will be copied into the following directories:
Library/Application Support/A id/Audio/Plug-Ins
Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/
Library/Application Support/Documentation/XILS-lab/ChorX
Library/Application Support/XILS-lab/ChorX
users/username/Library/Preferences/XILS-lab/ChorX

4 Getting Started
4.1 Inser or Bus
Like any other Chorus unit effect, Chor'X can be inserted in the instrument channel of your mixer or DAW,
or be used on an auxiliary bus. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each method.
4.1.1 Chor'X as insert
When inserted on the instrument channel, you can adjust the dry/wet signal between the incoming dry
signal and the delay signal (wet) using the DRY/WET knob located at the bottom right of the unit.
This can result in a loss of global olume; therefore you should use the Global Output Gain knob to
compensate for this.
The main ad antage of this method is that you can use the Chor'X ad anced stereo processing to put your
track in the stereo field in a real, easy and intuiti e way.
4.1.2 Chor'X on a Bus
When placed in an auxiliary bus, Chor'X pro ides you total control of the processed signal: You can EQ it,
compress it, choose to add re erb on it, or a different re erb than on the dry signal… in short you can
perform all the processing you want. You can also render the signal of Chor'X on an audio track then
cut/paste/slice/edit it.
In an auxiliary track, Chor'X can also recei e data from SEVERAL separate audio channels.
You can experiment with this and create stunning effects that would be different if Chor'X recei ed only a
single channel signal.
In that method, you must turn the Dry/wet parameter in the Ad anced panel fully to the right to remo e
the dry signal. To mix between dry and wet, you will use the global le el of each of the indi idual tracks,
and/or the global le el of the Chor'X.
4.2 Toolbar
Note: The toolbar at the top of the interface allows you to load or sa e presets, make a comparison between
settings A and B, or modify the options. These functions are described in detail later in this manual.
Click on the PRESET menu to show the a ailable presets in the current sorted group. Please note that selecting
a new preset without sa ing your current settings will erase any changes you ha e made to those settings.
Click on the sort arrow button to display the current sorted group and to choose the preset within it.
You can sort presets by: Author, Feeling, Type, Style, Bank or Projects.
Please note that Chor'X will display presets by Author categories by default.
Click on the sorting label o er the sorted group name, to sort your presets according to your preferences.
Please note that Chor'X’s powerful Preset management is fully explained in chapter 5 of this manual.

4.3 Adjus ing he Chor'X parame ers
On Chor'X, the sound parameters are controlled using knobs, switches or Pad 2D.
To use a mouse to adjust the parameters of Chor'X which are controlled by knobs, click inside the knob and
mo e the mouse up or right to increase the alue, down or left to decrease it.
If you right-click on a parameter, or if you hold-shift while clicking, you can adjust the parameter with fine
precision.
To use a mouse to adjust the parameters of Chor'X which are controlled by a switch, just click inside it.
To use a mouse to adjust the parameters of Chor'X which are controlled by Pad 2D, locate the dot you want to
mo e, click on it and drag it around the PAD. By right-clicking, you can mo e se eral dots at the same time.
Keyboard shortcuts:
In addition, we ha e pro ided some soft key combinations to perform se eral ery useful tasks:
Windows:
•CTRL+left click: resets parameter to its default alue.
•CTRL+right click or CTRL+Shift+left click: initializes the default alue of the parameter.
•Win+Alt+CTRL + click: opens the MIDI Control panel, with the parameter already selected.
OSX:
•Apple+left click: resets parameter to its default alue.
•Apple+Shift+left click: initialises the default alue of the parameter
•Apple+Alt+CTRL + click: opens the MIDI Control panel, with the parameter already selected.
When a parameter is chosen ia a drop-down menu, just click on the button or label and select the item.
The help button (?) on the toolbar displays a panel summarizing these shortcuts.
5 Preset Management
5.1 Main Toolbar
In the toolbar you can find two buttons, displaying the category name (Bank, Author, Type, Style, Feeling or
Project), which open the sort management menus.
The first two text fields show the current sorting group and the third shows the current preset.
Clicking the arrow on the left of the category or preset names opens the corresponding menus.
Note: When a parameter is modified, the name of the preset is followed by a *, indicating that the current
settings of Chor'X no longer match the stored preset.
When you want to sa e a modified preset, click on the Save or Save As button.
In order to pre ent you from erasing them, the Factory presets cannot be modified. When you edit a Factory
preset, the Save button will be grayed out, and you will ha e to use the Save As function to sa e it in another
bank.
If you edit any preset, other than a Factory one, the Save and Save As function will both be a ailable.
The main difference is that the Save function will sa e the preset under its current name, and with its current
tags, o erwriting the pre ious incarnation of the preset, while the Save As function will open a dialog box where
you can modify the name of the preset, the bank in which it will be stored, and all its tags.

The settings of Chor'X are then sa ed in the currently displayed preset, and the *disappears. Click on the
Save As button to sa e this preset with another name and/or to other sorting groups.
5.2 Prese Menu
Click the Preset arrow button to open the preset menu. Here you can choose and load another preset from the
current sort group into Chor'X.
In this menu, other actions are also a ailable:
elete Preset: Use this to delete the current preset (a pop-up confirmation window appears). This option is
only a ailable if the current preset is not a factory one.
Export Preset: Use this function to export the current preset in an external file (.chx format). This file can be
imported later as a new bank. It always makes sense to back-up your presets on external media.
5.3 Sor Menus
The sorting menus are a unique and powerful tool allowing you to perform sophisticated tasks, such as
displaying the preset list organized in a ariety of different ways:
•All the Organ type choruses of your Sound Library
•All the Organ type choruses tagged with a gi en musical genre
•All the Organ type choruses made by a gi en Sound Designer
•All presets for a musical genre like Electronica, or Funk
•All presets that were recently imported in a bank
There are indeed a lot of possibilities, and we’re confident that you’ll find the best way to customize it to
your personal needs.

In order to perform such selections, all you ha e to do is select an item in the first sort menu. This
represents the first and main criteria for the search engine.
•Author (Your name, or a Sound Designer name for factory presets),
•Type (Category of the instrument like Keys, Leads, Basses, etc.)
•Style (Musical Genre),
•Feeling (Cold, warm, soft)
•Project (My Song, My Li e Project).
•ALL (this item is not used for sorting the preset)
These primary results can then also be filtered according to a second criteria which can be chosen from a
similar list in the secondary sort menu.
Sometimes a picture is better than a lot of text, so below you’ll find an example of where you can find how
to select a specific sound.
Please note that, once you are familiar with this system, you can also perform some operations with a single
click, by using the Sub Groups to choose a preset:
In the picture below, the primary sort menu is used to browse the different banks. Then in a factory bank, the
author, Xils-Lab, is selected, and finally the Preset -Init-. In this example the preset is selected in a single click
operation, and the presets a ailable in the preset list will be all the Xils-Lab presets a ailable in the entire
Factory Sound Library.
Click on the row of the sorting button to open the menu used to manage this sorting group (or subgroup). Here
you can directly select and load any preset from any group or subgroup.
5.3.1 Sorting Menu: dditional Functions
In this menu, other actions are also a ailable:
elete: Deletes all of the presets of the current group that are not factory ones. IMPORTANT: Use this function
with care: If the bank does not contain any factory presets, ALL PRESETS IN THIS BANK WILL BE PERMANENTLY
DELETED.
Use Factory: enables or disables the display of factory presets.
Sort By: This function sorts the presets according to bank, author, project, or shows all presets (Bank Name,
Author Name,Project Name,All Presets). The preset menu will show presets of the same category (same
author, same project or same bank).
Export Bank: This function exports a bank in Chor'X’s proprietary cross platform format, (Mac and PC). The

selected bank (i.e., the bank which contains the currently acti e preset) will be exported to a user specified
location on your hard dri e.
Import Bank: This Function allows you to browse your hard dri es to select a file and import a Chor'X bank.
These two choices are not a ailable from the second sort menu.
This menu also pro ides the possibility to change the size of the interface. This feature is the same as the one
pro ided in the Option menu.
5.4 Advanced Prese Manager
The preset manager pro ides two modes: Current Preset Mode and Browser (or Tag) Mode.
Current Preset Mode: This mode allows you to change any of the criteria of the current preset and sa e
them as well as the current settings.
Click on a criteria and choose a new one in the menu. If you need a new criteria choose “New criteria” and
submit the new name in the edit box. Click on the preset name to change it.
When done, click on SAVE CURRENT (to replace your preset) or SAVE AS CURRENT (to duplicate it)
Notice: When creating a new preset, this is the mode you need to go to for sa ing your settings.
Preset Browser Mode: This mode allows you to easily sort your preset among multiple criteria for a fast
selection.
ouble click or hit Enter on a preset to launch it. Be careful, this will erase any changes you could ha e made
to the current preset.
Use the Arrow (up and down) for browsing the presets
Click on a criteria for displaying only the corresponding presets.
A grayed-out criteria means that, according to the currently selected criteria, there is no preset that matches
that criteria.
The current preset and its associated criteria are highlighted in green.
Clicking on the Browser icon will open the Preset manager in Browser mode.
Clicking on the Save As icon will open the Preset manager in Current Preset mode.

On each criteria, right-clicking will open a contextual menu. You can then rename, delete, export a criteria. In
these two later cases, all the presets which are not in the “Factory” bank, corresponding to that criteria will be
deleted or exported.
Favorite: You can add each preset in your “Fa orite” or “Hidden” selection. In that case, when clicking on the
“Fa orite” icon, only the preset in your fa orite selection will be displayed. When clicking on the “Hidden” icon,
all the presets in your “Hidden” selection will be remo ed from the list.
Factory: The preset in the factory bank can't be changed or remo ed (shown by a lock at the right of the
preset). When clicking on the “Lock” icon, all the “Factory” presets will be remo ed from the list.
Import: By clicking on the IMPORT button, you can import banks of presets created for Chor'X.
Click on ONE to close the preset manager panel.
5.5 A/B comparison
You can store two different settings at the same time and instantly switch from one to the other to compare
their settings. These two settings are stored in the Aand Bmemories.
When you launch Chor'X, the default-acti ated memory is A. When you load or modify a
preset, this memory –A- is also modified in real time according to your edits. You can
switch to B memory by clicking on the B button.
To copy the current acti e memory content to the other memory slot, just press the button
labeled -> or <-, according to the current acti e memory.
With this A/B comparison system, you can easily ha e two settings and compare them in a con enient way.
6 The Main Panel
The basic concept of Chor'X is that e erything you need to play with it li e is a ailable from the Main
Panel whate er the mode you are using “Legacy” or “Ad anced”. When first launched, Chor'X shows only
the legacy panel, from which you can select one of the four legacy chorus effects.
By clicking on the arrow at the middle bottom of this panel, the ad anced settings panel would open.
6.1 The Legacy Se ings
In this panel, you can easily choose which famous chorus you want, and ha e direct access to the specific
settings associated with each model: 3 modes for the Synthex, Chorus/Tremolo for the CS-80, 4 modes for
the Dim-D and a single mode for the VP-330 ensemble.

“Synthex” structure,
based on two BBDs and
two LFOs per channel
and an amplifier based
compander emulation.
“Dimension D” structure,
based on one BBD per
channel and only one LFO
dispatched in in erted
phase to the left and the
right channel
“VP 330” structure,
based on two BBDs and
two LFOs per channel
and an amplifier based
compander emulation.
“CS-80” structure, based
on one BBD and two
LFOs per channel. The
LFOs are also modulating
the le el.
At the right of the legacy panel, you will find the corresponding audio path and at the left the global le el.
Two simple u-meters show you the le el of the input and output of the audio. A clip led will be lit for a
few second when reached.
Clicking on the Arrow will open the ad anced settings where some of the internal parameters of the
selected chorus can be changed as well as the possibility to engage the True Stereo Space engine and the
Transient follower modulation.
6.2 The Advanced Se ings
As soon as a parameter in this area is changed, the Arrow which opens the Ad anced Settings panel
becomes lit. This way, e en if this panel is closed, you are aware that something has been done under the
roof.
Furthermore, the padlock at the left of the global le el is locked, helping you to a oid erasing settings you
might ha e done by changing a legacy mode or chorus type.
If you wish to do so, then click on the padlock to open it and change the legacy mode or chorus type. In
that case, the Arrow won't be lit any more, all the ad anced settings being reset to the selected mode or
chorus type.
6.3 The Bucke -Brigade Delay (BBD) se ings
At the right of the Ad anced Settings panel, you will find the area where internal chorus parameters can be
changed.
The Pad 2D allows you to change with a single mouse mo e, the frequency and the amount of the LFO
used to control one of the BBD. Depending on the chorus type, there are one, two or four LFOs.
The SPEE and AMOUNT knob are used to add dynamic changes to these settings gi ing a more dense
and fat chorus.
If a position seems good to your ears, you can freeze it by clicking on the FREEZE switch. The switches
HORZ and VERT allow this dynamic change to be applied only on the frequency (VERT engaged) or the
amount (HORZ engaged).
The HISS knob allows you to increase or decrease the noise created by the internal emulated bucket-
brigade delay.

6.3.1 Bucket-Brigade Delay settings, VP330 and CS-80 structure
There are two bucket-brigade emulations, one for each channel.
Each delay is modulated in frequency and range, according to the position of the lights.
When a light is mo ed around the 2-D area, the corresponding delay is modulated according to its position.
Horizontal mo ement gi es a greater or lesser amount; ertical mo ement gi es a greater or lesser speed.
6.3.2 Bucket-Brigade Delay settings, Synthex structure
There are four bucket-brigade emulations, two for the left channel and two for the right channel.
Each delay is modulated in frequency and range, according to the position of the lights.
The mix between the two delays of each channel can be done with to the knobs BB MIX left and right.
The colors show, which delay is used.
When a light is mo ed within the 2-D area, the corresponding delay is modulated according to its position.
Horizontal mo ement gi es a greater or lesser amount; ertical mo ement gi es a greater or lesser speed.
Right clicking on a light allows you to mo e all four lights together, keeping their relati e position.
6.3.3 Bucket-Brigade Delay settings, Dimension D structure

There are two bucket-brigade emulations, one for each channel.
Each delay is modulated by a unique LFO, in range according to the horizontal position of the lights, in
frequency according to the ertical position of the lights. As there is only one LFO, the ertical positions of
the lights are the same for both.
Right clicking on a light allows the two lights to mo e together, keeping their relati e position.
6.3.4 The True Stereo Dynamic Engine
Chor'X offers a powerful stereo processing allowing you to put your audio signal in a true stereo space.
This is done in an easy and intuiti e way as well as gi ing you a real stereo feeling.
You can only process the wet signal (the blurred lights) or, by clicking on the RY button, also process the
dry signal. You can also process a stereo input signal as a mono source by engaging the RY MONO
switch.
Important: As in reality, putting your audio sources far from the microphones will reduce the le el. You
will need to compensate for this, using the general output le el, which offers a wide range. If you are
processing the dry signal, the relati e position between them directly affects the mix of the dry and wet
signal. You may need to compensate with the ry/Wet le el.
MIC ANGLE sets the position of the microphones and WI TH, makes the space more or less wide.
Mo ing the lights around the area gi es you the right position for your sound.
Right click allows you to keep a left/right balance identical.
Clicking and mo ing the microphones allows you to open your stereo effect.

As with the bucket-brigade settings, you can add chaotic mo ement to the stereo position of your wet
signal, with AMOUNT and SPEE , HORZ and VERT allowing the animation to be horizontal or ertical
only.
Blue and Green lights are for the right and left dry channels.
Blurred Circled Blue and Circled Green lights are for the right and left wet channels.
In that module, you can change the RY/WET relati e le els. Doing so, you change the legacy settings as
original models ha e fixed Dry/Wet relati e le els.
6.3.5 The Transient Follower Modulations
Some audio materials don't like too much chorus because of the blurring effect of the attacks.
Thanks to the Transient Modulation, Chor'X allows you to a oid processing the attacks of the signal.
For the special dry feature, you first need to set the threshold: Clicking on the green light and mo ing it
around the 2-D area, you will easily find the right threshold position. During this setting you will only hear
the detected impulses.
The upper left corner gi es you the maximum of detection and the bottom right corner, the minimum.
Important: Of course, this must be done with audio material that presents strong attacks like drums or
plucks. Otherwise, nothing will be detected, so you won't hear anything.
When the threshold is set, just click on the RY/WET button and set the AMOUNT. The detected attacks
will be unprocessed.
For other material like strings or pads, you may need to increase the chorus settings depending on the
le el. This is done with the AMOUNT. Click on this button and set the AMOUNT, the bucket brigade
settings will be modulated according to the le el of the audio signal.

7 Option menu
This menu allows you to choose the global settings. These settings are defined for all the instances of the
Chor'X. Each time an option is changed, the related option file is sa ed.
