HEALTH AND SAFETY–HEAD MOUNTED DISPLAY (HMD)
Please review the following material carefully. Failure to follow the instructions, or
failure to heed the warnings contained herein could lead to serious injury and/ or
damage to your vision.
Some people may experience eye fatigue or discomfort after using the HMD for
an extended period of time. If you experience eye fatigue, nausea, dizziness,
light-headedness, disorientation, or any other symptom that could be attributed
to the HMD, stop using it immediately for a short period of time. If the symptoms
persist after normal use is resumed, stop immediately and consult a physician
before continuing.
Never use the HMD when operating a motor vehicle or any other device or
machinery that requires the use of both eyes. If you need to move or walk while
wearing the HMD, always turn the HMD display unit away from the eye so that
you have an unobstructed view of your surroundings prior to moving or walking.
Remember that the HMD is tethered via a power cable to the CPU. Do not use
the HMD in environments where any part of the HMD might get entangled with
other objects, moving equipment or machinery. Do not use the HMD in situations
where any obstruction to your view might cause harm or damage to yourself or
others.
Epilepsy and seizures are experienced by a very small portion of the population.
These affected individuals have a condition which may cause them to experience
epileptic seizures or have momentary loss of consciousness when viewing certain
kinds of flashing lights or patterns that are commonly present in our daily
environment. Individuals that have not had any previous seizures may
nevertheless have an undetected epileptic condition.
Discontinue the use of the HMD immediately and consult your physician if you
experience any of the following symptoms while wearing the HMD: eye or
muscle twitching, involuntary body movements, disorientation, loss of awareness
of your surroundings, mental confusion, dizziness, sickness, and/ or convulsions.
Although the HMD has been designed to minimize the potential for adverse
effects, some users may experience slight headaches or eye strain when first
using the system. If you feel discomfort, discontinue use for a short period of
time. Refer to the instructions in this manual and ensure that the unit is properly
fitted and is properly adjusted. If eye strain or headaches continue, discontinue
use immediately and consult your physician.

XYBERNAUT MA IV User’s Guide February 1999 vii
Statement of Intended Use
The HMD should not be subjected to extreme environments and extra care
should be taken in handling, packaging and shipping of the unit.

Introducing the Xybernaut MA IV™
THE COMPUTER EVOLUTION
Computers have always held the information you need but just
out of reach.
The first computers were big and powerful enough to hold a
lot of information. And as soon as they appeared, the quest
began to make them smaller and more mobile so the
information needed to be truly productive could always be
within reach.
With the introduction of desktop personal computers,
computers became smaller and more powerful. But as the
name implies, they were still stationary, tied to a desktop.
When laptops arrived on the scene, computers became smaller,
but their mobility was still limited. You could move from desk
to desk, and from place to place, but to use the laptop in an
efficient manner, you had to become stationary again.
In many cases, the distance between your work and your
information was just far enough away to reduce efficiency and
slow productivity.
THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION
The Xybernaut Mobile Assistant (MA IV) wearable computer
is a revolution in information mobility — the next logical
extension of computing power from mainframe to desktop to
laptop… to body-worn. With the MA IV, you have
information within reach — and your hands free to use it to
always do your job.

4February 1999 XYBERNAUT MA IV User’s Guide
Introducing the Xybernaut MA IV™
The MA IV is a fully functional PC computer but with several
advantages over other types of computers.
Feature Benefit
Mobile ergonomic design The MA IV and the indispensable information it can access goes
wherever the work is. Productivity increases.
Rugged durability and
performance
The MA IV is designed for industrial work environments. The specially
designed magnesium alloy case is 10 to 20 times stronger than most
ABS plastic lap-top computer cases. The removable hard drive is
mounted in shock-absorbing gel.
The MA IV’s durability keeps the system up and running. Productivity
increases.
Voice activation You can interact with the MA IV without using your hands. It’s faster
than typing and doesn’t take your hands or your attention away from
your primary focus. Productivity increases.
Video capture Even people that aren’t wearing the MA IV benefit from its mobility.
With the optional video camera, the MA IV can transmit video
through the network to an off-site expert. Productivity increases.
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
connector
The MA IV is designed with a USB connector on the CPU. USB ported
devices are rapidly becoming the standard for connecting peripherals
in the most efficient manner. USB connections offer advantages in
speed over other connections such as serial or infrared. Productivity
increases.
Multiple communication
configurations
The MA IV maintains its true mobility while remaining connected to
the network via standard communications CardBus PCMCIA cards.
Mobile network connections can be made to numerous wireless local
area network (LAN) communications devices, many operating at data
rates ranging from 1 million to 10 million bits per second (Mbps).
Connections can also be made to wireless wide area networks (WAN)
such as nationwide cellular systems and packet data networks.
The MA IV allows you to be mobile but maintain access to all the
information on your enterprise network. Productivity increases.

The MA IV in Action
XYBERNAUT MA IV User’s Guide February 1999 5
THE MA IV IN ACTION
Let’s take a look at the MA IV in action, because it is in action
where the MA IV distinguishes itself above other computers.
Access to the enterprise network resources needed to do your
job effectively are always within reach of the MA IV. Whether
working within a single building or thousands of miles from the
office, true computing mobility is enabled through a remote
network connection. For shorter distances such as within a
cluster of buildings, RF wireless LAN technology enables you to
maintain a high bandwidth connection to the network. For
longer distances, you connect to the network via a simple
cellular, dial-up connection.

6February 1999 XYBERNAUT MA IV User’s Guide
Introducing the Xybernaut MA IV™
Using the MA IV in Inspection
Because of its mobility, the power of the MA IV goes with you
wherever you go. Speech input permits inspection of anything
— vehicles, machinery, complex electronic systems, factory
facilities, utilities, detailed assemblies, remote sites, even
patients in medical applications — while inputting data,
checking guidelines and data, transferring information,
making on-the-spot decisions, and simultaneously
accumulating an accurate audit trail.
Using the MA IV in Maintenance
The maintenance of high-tech machines and systems has
presented a troublesome problem. The machines are so
complex that detailed technical manuals are necessary;
however, consulting these voluminous manuals slows
productivity and interrupts efficiency.
The MA IV’s speech recognition software puts technical
manuals, support data, and technical databases at your
fingertips — without the fingers! Hands-free operation
eliminates cumbersome or missing manuals, torn or missing
pages, and loss of eye contact with parts and assemblies.
Speech-controlled operation keeps the hands and mind free
for all of the business chores of a job — accurate parts
identification, ordering, accounting, downloading and
uploading maintenance and inventory history, integration of
past inspection details from a central log, and identifying
trends. Operators can concentrate their full expertise and
attention on the task at hand.

A Closer Look at the MA IV

The Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Much like a laptop or desktop computer, the MA IV is a fully
functioning WINTEL PC, including an Intel processor, Microsoft
Windows Operating System, hard drive, and RAM.
The CPU is the brains behind the MA IV. It contains ports into
which you connect peripheral and power cables, and PCMCIA
cards to communicate with a network.
