Welcome to Home Networking
The HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet Kit is designed to
assist you in quickly setting up your home network. It comes
with everything you need to link two computers together in a
network which allows you to share a single Internet connection
exchange files and share expensive equipment such as printers
and modems.
The HomeConnect USB Network Adapter is the simplest method
of connecting a computer to an Ethernet network. You can install
and remove the USB Network Adapter without removing the
case of your computer and without turning the power off!
Before you begin
Before you begin the installation make sure that you have all
the items in the components list.
 Install the HomeClick Network Software first. The Network
Setup Wizard tells you when it's time to install the network
hardware. Just follow the instructions on the screen.
 If you have the home network kit install both the software and
the hardware on one computer before moving on to the next.
 When you finish installing the network software
and hardware use HomeClick Network Center to
customize and troubleshoot your home network.

If you bought the HomeConnect USB
Network Ada ter
The USB Network Adapter connects one computer to an exist-
ing Ethernet network. The box contains the following compo-
nents:

If you bought the HomeConnect Home
Network Ethernet Kit
The HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet Kit has every-
thing you need to connect two computers in a network. The
box contains the following components:

Note:
To connect the USB Net-
work Adapter to a net-
work you need a 10BASE-
T "straight-through"

Note:
If the Network Setup
Wizard does not start
automatically on the Start
menu click Run and type
d:\setup.exe where d: is
the letter of your CD-ROM
drive.
Set Up Your Home Network
Installation overview
You can start installing your home network on any computer.
The Network Setup Wizard walks you through the following
steps:
1. Start the Network Setup Wizard on the computer that
you want to connect to your network.
2. Install the network hardware.
a. When prompted by the Network Setup Wizard
connect the USB Network Adapter to your computer.
b. Connect the USB Network Adapter to an Ethernet hub
(supplied with the HomeConnect Home Network
Ethernet Kit).
c. Restart the computer.
3. If you have the HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet
Kit repeat steps 1-4 on the next computer that you
want to be a part of your home network.
4. When you've finished installing the software and hardware
use HomeClick Network Center to customize
and maintain your network.
Install the network software
1. Insert the HomeClick Network Software CD in to the
CD-ROM drive of the computer that you want to add to
your home network.
The Network Setup Wizard starts automatically. The Network
Setup Wizard walks you through the entire process. To use
the Setup Wizard all you need is the CD-key (located on your
HomeClick Network Software CD-sleeve) and a unique name
for your computer. That's it. The Setup Wizard takes care of
all the details.
2. When you finish installing the software the Network
Setup Wizard will tell you when to connect the USB
Network Adapter to your computer.

b. Connect the USB Network Ad ater to your network hub
Connect the USB Network Adapter to the HomeConnect 10 Mbps
Ethernet Hub included in the HomeConnect Ethernet Kit. Alter-
natively you can also connect the USB Network Adapter to any
10 Mbps Ethernet hub. For more information about the
HomeConnect hub see "About the HomeConnect Hub" later in
this guide.
Warning: If you have the HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet
Kit review the safety information for the hub before you connect
to it. See "Important Safety information" later in this guide.
Note:
To connect the USB Net-
work Adapter to an
Ethernet hub you will
need an Ethernet 10BASE-
T straight-through cable.
This cable is not supplied
with the USB Network
Adapter; however it is
supplied with the
HomeConnect Home
Network Ethernet Kit.

Install the network hardware
a. Connect the USB Network Ada ter to Your Com uter
Before you connect the USB Network Adapter make sure that
your computer is turned on and that Windows 98 is running.
Also make sure that you have installed the HomeClick Network
software as described in the previous section.
1. Connect the USB cable to the USB
network Adapter.
2. Connect the other end of the USB
cable to an available USB port on your
computer.
1. Insert one end of an Ethernet cable
into the USB network adapter that
you just connected to your computer.
2. Insert the other end of the Ethernet
cable into any available computer
port (labeled 1 through 5) on the
hub.
3. Plug the hub power adapter into the
hub and then into an AC power
socket. The hub turns on automati-
cally.
c. Restart your com uter.

!Using HomeClick Network Center
You can use HomeClick Network Center to do some of the most
common network tasks. You can see what computers are avail-
able on the network share files printers and even and Internet
connection. Also use HomeClick Network Center if you have
problems with your network. Use the HomeClick Self Test to
check the network settings on your computer or see the network
troubleshooting information located in the Online Users Guide
for more information. HomeClick Network Center does not need
to be running to use your home network. To start HomeClick
Network Center on the Start menu point to Programs and then
click HomeClick Network Center
See what com uters are available on your network
The Network Status page displays the computer you are using
in addition to the other computers on the network that use the
same network name. If you have problems with your network
click the Test button and HomeClick Network Center tests the
network settings on the current computer and fixes any prob-
lems it finds.
Add the next com uter to your network
After you have run the Network Setup Wizard and installed the
HomeConnect hardware on one computer remove the CD from
the CD-ROM drive and take it to the next computer that you
want to be a part of your home network.
Once you finish installing the network software and hardware
your network may look something like this:

Move files from one com uter to another without
flo y disks.
Use the File Sharing page to make folders from one computer
available to the other computers on your network. You can make
every folder on a disk drive available to the other computers on
the network or you can pick individual folders that you want
other people to see. You can also set passwords and different
levels of access for drives and folders.
To access files on other com uters, use Network Neighbor-
hood
In Network Neighborhood you can see all the computers that are
on your home network. When you open a computer by double-
clicking you can see the drives and folders that are shared from
that computer. Open a drive or folder and you can see the fold-
ers and files that are accessible from that shared drive or folder.
For more information about working with drives folders and
files on your home network see File Sharing in the Online
Users Guide.
Switch your network settings for com uters that
work with more than one network.
Sometimes a computer is used with more than one network. You
use the computer at home and then you take it to work. With
HomeClick Profiles you can quickly set your computer up for use
on two different networks.
On the Options menu click Profiles... and then click the net-
work profile you want to use. Restart your computer now or later
and after your computer restarts all your network settings are
ready for the network you want to use.

Share a rinter between multi le com uters
Now you can have one printer available to every computer on
your network without having to save your work on a floppy
disk. HomeClick automatically tells you if there is a printer that
you can use and then helps you start the Add Printer wizard to
add the printer to your computer. After the printer is set up you
can print in any application as if you had a printer attached
directly to that computer. The document you are printing is sent
across the network and is printed on the printer attached to the
other computer. On the Printers page you can also share print-
ers and set passwords for printers.
Make a single Internet connection available to all
the com uters on your home network.
You can have as many people looking at different things on the
Internet as you have computers on your network! To set up
Internet Connection Sharing on your home network:

Note:
You cannot use Port 5 and
the Uplink port at the
same time. If you connect
a computer to Port 5 the
Uplink port is disabled.
Similarly if you connect a
hub to the Uplink port
Port 5 is disabled.
About the HomeConnect Hub
The HomeConnect 10 Mbps Ethernet Hub which is part of the
HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet Kit is the heart of your
home network. It acts as a central communication point for all
the computers and other devices on your network.
The HomeConnect hub con-
tains five computer ports and
one Uplink port. The five com-
puter ports allow you to create
a small network with up to five
computers. The Uplink port
enables you to connect an-
other Ethernet hub to expand
your network.
Im ortant Safety Information
Warning: Warnings contain directions that you must follow for
your personal safety. Follow all directions carefully. You must
read the following safety information carefully before you in-
stall or remove the unit.
 Exceptional care must be taken during the installation and
removal of the unit.
 To ensure compliance with international safety standards only
use the power adapter that is supplied with the hub.
 The socket outlet must be near to the unit and easily ac
cessible. You can only remove power from the unit by dis
connecting the power cord from the outlet.
 This unit operates under SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage)
conditions according to IEC 950. The conditions are only
maintained if the equipment to which it is connected also
operates under SELV conditions.
 There are no user-replaceable fuses or user-serviceable
parts inside the hub. If you have a physical problem with
the unit that cannot be solved with problem solving actions
in this guide contact your supplier.
 Disconnect the power adapter before moving the unit.
Warning: The RJ-45 ports are shielded RJ-45 data sockets.
They cannot be used as telephone sockets. Only connect RJ-45
data connectors to these sockets.
Set u your Connection Sharing Com uter
1. Choose your Connection Sharing Computer.
The Connection Sharing Computer lets all of the other com-
puters on the network use its Internet connection. When you
pick your Connection Sharing Computer make sure you pick
the one with the fastest modem. The Connection Sharing
Computer must also be using Windows 98 Second Edition.
(You can update one Windows 98 computer to Windows 98
Second Edition using the Windows 98 Second Editions Up-
dates CD included in the box).
2. Update your Windows 98 computer
If necessary use the Windows 98 Second Edition Updates CD
to update one Windows 98 computer. This will take 30-60
minutes.
3. Install Internet Connection Sharing.
Once your computer is using Windows 98 Second Edition you
can install Internet Connection sharing. On the Internet Con-
nection page in HomeClick Network Center click set p Con-
nection Sharing on this comp ter then follow the directions
in the associated Help topic. This will take about 5 minutes.
Set u other com uter on your network to use a shared con-
nection
After you set up the Connection Sharing Computer you can use
that Internet connection from any computer that is a part of your
home network.
1. Go to the computer you from which you want to access the
Internet.
2. On the Internet Connection page in HomeClick Network
Center click the connection shared from the
Connection Sharing Computer.
3. Open your Web browser. The Connection Sharing Computer
will dial automatically.
See the information in the Online Users Guide about using
Internet Connection Sharing with specific Internet Service Pro-
viders.

Positioning and Securing the Hub
The HomeConnect hub comes with a base that can be fixed to
either the bottom or the rear of the hub. The hub can then be
placed upright on a desktop or table or mounted to a wall to
save desktop space.
When selecting a location for the hub follow these guidelines:
 Make sure that the hub is out of direct sunlight and away
from heat sources.
 Make sure that the hub cabling is away from power lines
fluo rescent lighting fixtures and sources of electrical noise
such as radios and televisions.
 Make sure that water or moisture cannot enter the case of
the hub.
 Make sure that the air flow around the hub and through its
vents is not restricted. A minimum of 1 inch clearance around
the hub is recommended.
If you want to place the hub on a table or desk install the base
on the bottom of the hub so that the hub is standing upright.
If you want to mount the hub to a wall secure the base to the
wall using two screws (not supplied) and then slide the side of
the hub into the base.
Note:
Before installing the hub
on a wall make sure it is
within reach of a power
outlet. Also use flathead
screws to secure the base
so that the heads of the
screws do not protrude
above the surface of the
base.
Connecting Hubs Together
If you want to expand your network beyond the five computer
ports available on your hub you can connect up to four standard
Ethernet hubs together in a "daisy chain" (that is hub 1 to hub
2 and so on).
Before you connect your hubs together make sure that they are
turned off.
1. Insert one end of an Ethernet cable into the Uplink port on
the HomeConnect hub.
2. Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable into one of the
computer ports on theother hub. Do not insert the cable
into the Uplink port on the other hub.
3. Turn on the hubs.
The Port Status LEDs for the ports you have used should be
green. If they are not check your connections and make sure
that the cabling is secure and not pulled too tightly.
The HomeConnect hub automatically recognizes the other hub.

When connecting stan-
dard Ethernet hubs to-
gether make sure that the
Ethernet cable connecting
one hub to another is not
longer than 328 feet.
