What is Zoom-Ex®:
Zoom-Ex®is an electronic magnifier that aids visually impaired persons in
reading printed material. The user places a printed document under Zoom-Ex®
camera, and Zoom-Ex®magnifies and displays it on a computer screen.
Zoom-Ex®responds to commands instantly, supports text formatting for easy
reading, weighs about 1lb and folds easily for portability.
Installing Zoom-Ex®
For installation instructions, see Zoom-Ex Installation Guide.
Using Zoom-Ex®
Once you have plugged Zoom-Ex®into your computer, Zoom-Ex®is “on”. Place
any printed material at the Zoom-Ex®base and double-click Zoom-Ex®icon on
your computer screen.
The Zoom-Ex®window appears. It displays – with magnification, – a portion of
the document.

Currently, and every time on start-up, Zoom-Ex®is in Magnification (CCTV)
mode: Zoom-Ex®displays on screen what is currently placed under its camera.
For instructions on how to change the degree of magnification or to move around
the document, see the Working in Magnification Mode topic below.
Working in Magnification (CCTV) Mode
Magnify (zoom-in) and shrink (zoom-out) whatever you see on the screen:
By mouse: roll the mouse wheel forward/backwards to zoom in/out. If your
mouse does not have the wheel, use keyboard’s + and – (plus
and minus signs).
By keyboard: press + and – (plus and minus signs) to, respectively, zoom in
and out.
By control pad: press button 1 for zooming in, and button 2 for zooming out (see
Appendix C for button layout).
Move the view without moving the magnified document:
By mouse: Click left mouse button at any point on the screen, and move
the mouse in the direction you want to move the document.
By keyboard: press left, right, up or down arrows.
By control pad: press hut switch in the direction you want to move the original
document.
Zoom-Ex®allows to view the document “digital style”; that is, scroll down as you
read without having to move around the page in all directions looking for the text
portion of interest. Digital-style viewing is available in Zoom-Ex®Formatted Text
mode. When in Formatted Text mode, Zoom-Ex®takes the snapshot of the page
placed under its camera, and displays the text, fitting it to the screen width and
omitting pictures altogether. For details of working in Formatted Text mode, see
the Working in Formatted Text Mode topic below.

Working in Formatted Text Mode
Formatted Text Mode displays the snapshot of your document. It also formats the
text so that lines fit the screen, no matter how large the magnification is. Forget
scrolling left and right: you only need to go down the page to read further (and up
the page, if you have forgotten what you were reading).
Format the document:
By mouse: double-click anywhere in the text.
By keyboard: press F2 key.
By control pad: press button C.
Navigate the formatted document:
By mouse: left-click, to scroll the view down; right click, to scroll the view
up.
By keyboard: use up and down arrow keys to scroll up and down line by line.
Use Page-Up and Page-Down keys to scroll up and down page
by page.
By control pad: use hut switch to scroll up and down

To go back to Magnification (CCTV) mode:
By mouse: double-click anywhere in the text.
By keyboard: press F2 key.
By control pad: press button C.
Note1: After you switch to Magnification (CCTV) mode from Formatted mode,
Press F4 key in order to adjust sharpness.
Note2: After switching to Magnification (CCTV) mode from formatted mode,
camera remains off and the whole page is in the computer memory.
Originally, when you switch from Magnification mode to Formatted text mode,
Zoom-Ex®takes the snapshot of the page and shuts its camera off, in order to
format the text. Once you leave Formatted Text mode and return to Magnification
mode, with the camera remaining off, Zoom-Ex®displays the still image of the
document. It makes no difference as far as reading the document is concerned.
However, in order to go to a different document, you need the camera back on.

Going To The Next Page or Another Document
If you are working in Magnification (CCTV) Mode, all you need to do is place the
new page at the Zoom-Ex®base: it will appear on the screen, magnified, as
soon as you put it in.
If you are working in Formatted Text Mode or if you viewed current page in
formatted mode, and switched back to CCTV mode, Zoom-Ex®camera is off;
the camera needs to be switched on.
To switch the Zoom-Ex®camera on:
By keyboard: press space bar.
By control pad: press bar.
Now place the new page at the Zoom-Ex®base.
Note: Re-starting Zoom-Ex®camera sets Zoom-Ex®to Magnification (CCTV)
mode.

Changing the Sharpness Setting
In order to change sharpness:
By keyboard: Press F4 alternate between various sharpness modes.
By control pad: Press button X.
The sharpness/contrast settings should be set separately for the Magnification
Mode and the Formatted Text mode.
Changing the Text/Background Color
In order to switch between available colors:
By keyboard: press F3.
In Magnification mode, the available color options are:
- black-on-white,
- inverted (white-on-black),
- color
In Formatted Text mode, the available color options are:
- black-on-white,
- inverted (white-on-black),
- green-on-black,
- pink-on-white,
- yellow-on-blue
- white-on-blue
Rotating the View
Rotate the document view in Magnification (CCTV) Mode by pressing F6 on your
keyboard or button A on control pad. The view rotates by 90°at a time.

Using the Preview Window
The preview window allows you to navigate your document, and assist you in
deciding from where you want to start reading magnified text.
Preview window may be a small “Picture-in-Picture” window in the upper right
corner of the main window; or, it can be set to occupy the full screen.
Preview window is disabled by default. In order to enable the preview window,
you need to change the appropriate setting in the Settings dialog. On the main
menu, click Application and select Settings. The Settings dialog will appear. On
the Settings dialog, select the “Look and Feel” tab. In the “Show Preview
Window” area, select the preview window type that you want to enable (you can
select either or both).
Now, that you have enabled the preview window, you can show and hide it. To
show/hide the preview window or alternate between small and full screen
preview window:
By mouse: click the middle button.
By keyboard: press F5 key.
By control pad: press button Z.
The image above shows the full screen preview window enabled; the red focus
rectangle is positioned in the center. You can move the red focus rectangle
around, jumping right away to where you want to start reading. Once you have
moved the red focus rectangle to the desired location, you can either dismiss the

preview window (F5), or go directly to formatted mode (F2). The displayed
magnified text will start from the portion of the document highlighted by the red
focus rectangle, as the focus rectangle gets dismissed.
Move the red focus rectangle around the document:
By mouse: left-click the document, to have the red focus rectangle jump
there.
By keyboard: use keyboard arrows to move the rectangle around.
By control pad: press hut switch in the direction you wish to move the rectangle.
Changing Advanced Zoom-Ex®Display Characteristics
Fine-tuning the Contrast Setting
In order to change contrast:
By keyboard: Press Ctrl key and ‘>’ on the keyboard in order to increase
contrast; press Ctrl key and ‘<’ on the keyboard in order to
decrease contrast.
Note: make sure Ctrl key is pressed prior to “<” or “>” key.
“<” or “>” keys without pressing the Ctrl key will adjust
camera brightness.
By control pad: Press buttons Y and C.
Changing the Brightness Setting
By default, camera is operating in auto-brightness mode. In order to overwrite
auto-brightness mode and change brightness: press ‘<’ on the keyboard to
decrease brightness; press ‘>’ to increase brightness.
Note: Brightness can be changed only while camera is ‘on’, that is, in
Magnification Mode. When in Reformatted Text Mode, first switch to Modification
Mode (space bar), which will re-start the camera.
Press ‘<‘ and ‘>‘ simultaneously in order to switch back to auto-brightness mode.
