Preparing your slow cooker
8
Before using your cooker
1. Remove all packaging and lay out the separate components.
2. Check the slow cooker after unpacking for any visual damage such as:
•Misaligned or damaged parts
•Damage to the main body and separate components
•Damage to the plug or cable.
If you can see any damage do not use the cooker and refer to the
Customer Service details at the bottom of this page.
3. Make sure you choose a flat, stable and heat resistant surface, within reach of
a suitable mains power outlet, and out of the reach of children.
Important: Make sure there is plenty of ventilation space around the slow
cooker as heat and steam from cooking may cause damage.
4. Before first use, ensure the unit is unplugged and thoroughly wash the
removable ceramic bowl and glass lid ONLY, in warm soapy water. You can use a
damp cloth to wipe the exterior and interior of the cooker unit base. Allow to
completely dry.
Place the ceramic pot inside your slow cooker’s base.
Your slow cooker is now ready to use.
Note: During initial use you may notice a slight odour. This is simply from the
manufacturing process and will disappear after a few uses.

Using your slow cooker
9
Make sure the ceramic cooking pot is positioned
correctly in the base before continuing. Prepare
your ingredients and add to the ceramic pot.
We recommend that you do not fill more than
two thirds of the pot.
Ensure you have read the ‘Preparing your slow cooker’ instructions on page 8.
Note: During use the glass lid and ceramic cooking pot will get very hot. Always
handle with extreme care using oven gloves, until the unit has cooled down
sufficiently.
Always check that food is thoroughly cooked before serving.
Place the glass lid onto the ceramic cooking pot.
Note: This booklet contains cooking tips and recipes.
Plug your slow cooker into a suitable mains
supply and select your desired temperature.
This will illuminate the power light and start the
cooking process.
When cooking is finished, set the temperature
control dial to the ‘OFF’ position. Unplug your
slow cooker.
Using oven gloves, carefully remove the glass lid,
angling it away from yourself.
Carefully lift the ceramic cooking pot out of the
cooker base and place on a heatproof surface.

Using your slow cooker

Cooking temperatures
You can select one of two cooking temperatures. The most effective setting
depends on the food you are cooking and the cooking time you require.
Low: The low setting gently simmers the food for an extended period of time.
You should not need to stir the food if you select this setting.
High: The high setting is used when baking or cooking dried beans or pulses,
working around twice as fast as the low setting. Food will boil if you select this
setting so you may need to stir the food and add extra liquid during cooking.
Food should be monitored when cooking with this setting.
Keep Warm: The keep warm setting can be used to keep the cooked food warm
and suitable for serving.
Cooking times and adapting your recipes
Many recipes can be converted to cooking in your slow cooker.
Soups and stews are popular with casseroles and most meats also benefiting
from the low temperatures and even cooking.
Make sure you allow time for cooking and add less liquid as the recipe states.
Because food doesn’t overcook, you can put all ingredients in at the same time.
Milk or cream, however, should be added during the last hour of cooking.

Cooking tips
11
•The slow cooker must be at least half full for best results.
•If cooking soups, leave 5 cm space between the top of the cook pot and the
food surface to allow for simmering.
•All food should be covered with a liquid, gravy or sauce. In a separate pan or
jug, prepare your liquid, gravy or sauce and completely cover the food in the
ceramic cooking pot.
•Many recipes will take several hours to cook. If you don’t have time to
prepare food in the morning, prepare it the night before, storing the food in
a covered container in the fridge.
•For most recipes, the meat ingredients are browned first to improve their
appearance and flavour.
•If you are short on preparation time and would prefer to skip the browning
stage, simply add your meat and other ingredients into the slow cooker and
cover with boiling liquid/stock. You may need to increase the recipe cooking
time as follows:
•High setting +1 hour,
•Low Setting +2-3 hours.
•Most meat and vegetable recipes require 71/2 -91/2 hours on low, and 31/2
-51/2 hours on high. Note: These are guidelines only.
•Transfer the food to the cooking pot and add boiling liquid/stock.
•Removing the lid will allow valuable heat to escape, reducing the efficiency
of your slow cooker and increasing the cooking time. If you remove the lid
more than a couple of times to stir or add ingredients, then you will need to
allow 10-15 minutes extra cooking time each time you remove the lid.
•Vegetables usually take longer to cook than meat, so try and arrange
vegetables in the lower half of the pot. Carrots should be covered by liquid.
•Pieces of food cut into small pieces will cook quicker. A degree of ‘trial and
error’ will be required to fully optimise the potential of your slow cooker.
•Pre-brown meat and onions in a pan to seal in the juices, this also reduces
the fat content if separated before adding to the cooking pot. This is not
necessary if the time is limited, but improves the flavour.

Cooking tips
12
•When cooking joints of meat, ham, poultry etc., the size and shape of the
joint is important. Try to keep the joint in the lower 2/3 of the pot and fully
cover with water. If necessary, cut into two pieces.
•Do not use frozen meat or poultry unless it is thoroughly thawed out first.
Frozen vegetables should be thawed before adding to other foods in you
slow cooker.
•Some ingredients are not suitable for slow cooking. Pasta, seafood, milk, and
cream should be added towards the end of the cooking time. Many things
can affect how quickly a recipe will cook, water and fat content, initial
temperature of the food and the size of the food.
•The addition of liquids is not necessary for roasting. A small amount is
required for pot-roasting. Raise the meat to be roasted on an inverted
heatproof plate or saucer so that the meat is kept free of any released fat.
You can roast beef, lamb and pork.
•If a recipe requires pasta to be added, cook on a conventional stove until
slightly tender and add to your slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of
cooking. To use rice, stir in with the other ingredients and add ¼ cup extra
liquid for every ¼ cup of rice. Long grain rice gives better results.
•Leaf and whole herbs and spices are preferred. As the flavour of these are
stronger, it is recommended to use half the suggested amount when
converting a recipe.
•Slow cooking retains moisture/liquid. If you wish to reduce this, remove the
lid after cooking and turn the control to high (if set to low or keep warm)
and reduce the moisture by simmering for 15 to 45 minutes.
•After food is cooked, switch off and leave covered with the lid. There will be
enough heat in the cooking pot to keep warm for 30 minutes. Alternatively,
you can switch to the keep warm setting.
