RackMountInstructions‐Thefollowingorsimilarrack‐mountinstructionsareincludedwiththe
installationinstructions:
1. ElevatedOperatingAmbient‐Ifinstalledinaclosedormulti‐unitrackassembly,the
operatingambienttemperatureoftherackenvironmentmaybegreaterthanroomambient.
Therefore,considerationshouldbegiventoinstallingtheequipmentinanenvironment
compatiblewiththemaximumambienttemperature(Tma)specifiedbythemanufacturer.
2. ReducedAirFlow‐Installationoftheequipmentinarackshouldbesuchthattheamountof
airflowrequiredforsafeoperationoftheequipmentisnotcompromised.
3. MechanicalLoading‐Mountingoftheequipmentintherackshouldbesuchthata
hazardousconditionisnotachievedduetounevenmechanicalloading.
4. CircuitOverloading‐Considerationshouldbegiventotheconnectionoftheequipmentto
thesupplycircuitandtheeffectthatoverloadingofthecircuitsmighthaveonovercurrent
protectionandsupplywiring.Appropriateconsiderationofequipmentnameplateratings
shouldbeusedwhenaddressingthisconcern.
5. ReliableEarthing‐Reliableearthingofrack‐mountedequipmentshouldbemaintained.
Particularattentionshouldbegiventosupplyconnectionsotherthandirectconnectionsto
thebranchcircuit(e.g.useofpowerstrips).

(popularonUNIXsystems),SMB/CIFS(ServerMessageBlock/CommonInternetFileSystem)(used
withMSWindowssystems),orAFP(usedwithAppleMacintoshcomputers).NASunitsrarelylimit
clientstoasingleprotocol.
NASprovidesbothstorageandafilesystem.ThisisoftencontrastedwithSAN(StorageArea
Network),whichprovidesonlyblock‐basedstorageandleavesfilesystemconcernsonthe"client"
side.SANprotocolsareSCSI,FibreChannel,iSCSI,ATAoverEthernet(AoE),orHyperSCSI.
OnewaytolooselyconceptualizethedifferencebetweenaNASandaSANisthataNASappears
totheclientOS(operatingsystem)asafileserver(theclientcanmapnetworkdrivestoshareson
thatserver)whereasadiskavailablethroughaSANstillappearstotheclientOSasadisk,visiblein
diskandvolumemanagementutilities(alongwithclient'slocaldisks),andavailabletobe
formattedwithafilesystemandmounted.
