Basic care and tips for using your computer
Turning your computer on and off
To turn on the computer, simply slide and then release the power
switc h on the left side of your TravelMate.
To turn the power off, do any of the following:
•Use the Windows Shut Down... command
C lic k on Start, Shut Down..., and selec t Shutdown; then c lic k on
OK.
•Use the powerswitch
Note: You c an a lso use the power switc h to perform power
management func tions. See “Basic power management”on
page 28.
•Use the customized functions forpowermanagement
Youcanalsoshutdownthecomputerbyclosingthedisplaycover,
orby pressing the sleep hot key (Fn-F4). See “Ba sic power
management”on page 28.

hold the power switc h for more than four sec onds to shut down
the computer. If you turn off the c ompute r a nd wa nt to turn it on
again, waitatleasttwo seconds before powering up.
Taking care of your computer
Your c omputer will serve you well if you ta ke c are of it.
•Do not expose the c omputer to direc t sunlight. Do not plac e it
near sourc es of heat, suc h as a radiator.
•Do notexpose the c omputerto temperaturesbelow0ºC (32ºF) or
above 50ºC (122ºF).
•Do not subjectthe computerto magnetic fields.
•Do not expose the computerto rain ormoisture.
•Do not spill wa ter or a ny liquid on the c omputer.
•Do not subjec t the c omputer to heavy shoc k a nd vibration.
•Do not expose the computerto dust and dirt.
•Neverplac eobjec tsontopofthec omputertoavoiddamagingthe
computer.
•Do notslam the computerdisplay when you close it.
•Neverplace the computeron uneven surfaces.
Taking care of your AC adapter
Here a re some wa ys to take c are of your AC ada pter:
•Do not c onne c t the a da pte r to a ny othe r de vic e.
•Do notstep onthe powerc ord orplac e heavy objec tsontop ofit.
Carefullyroutethepowercordandanycablesawayfrompersonal
tra ffic .
•When unplugging the powercord, do notpullon the cord itself
but pull on the plug.
•The tota l a mpere ra tings of the e quipme nt plugge d in should not
exceedtheampere ratingofthe cordifyouare usinganextension
cord. Also,the totalcurrentrating ofallequipmentplugged into
a single walloutlet should notexceed the fuse rating.

Taking care of your battery pack
Here a re some ways to take c are of your battery pac k:
•Use only batteries ofthe same kind as replacements. Turn the
poweroffbefore removing orreplac ing batteries.
•Do nottamperwith batteries. Keep them away from children.
•Disp ose ofuse d b a tte rie s a c c ording to loc a lre gula tions. Re c yc le if
atallpossible.
Cleaning and servicing
When cleaning the computer, follow these steps:
1Powe r off the c omputer a nd re move the ba tte ry pa c k.
2Disconnectthe AC adapter.
3Use a soft c loth moistened with water. Do not use liquid or
aerosolcleaners.
If a ny of the following oc c urs:
•Thecomputerhasbeendroppedorthebodyhasbeendamaged.
•Liq uid ha s b e e n sp ille d into the p rod uc t.
•The computerdoes not operate normally.
